Re: Chapter 0.9: Duty and Disobedience

Dimitri let Nesryn take over, even if he had planned to be a
little less direct in his approach until they were somewhere
quieter. He observed Lilliana with a small, guarded look when
Nesryn basically spilled that they knew what happened. She
seemed angry, ashamed, and shaken. Part of Dimitri wanted to
take those expressions in and chalk them up to trying to save
her own skin. But a majority of his better sense told him that
Marcella wouldn't have done this under normal circumstances. She
even owned up to it, when she could have lied or even ran off. A
criminal trying to save their own skin wouldn't face their
accusers like this...
Dimitri made eye contact with her when she looked at him, even
if the glances were quick and fleeting. He was still not sure he
could completely trust her with Luna now, but that didn't mean
he couldn't try to understand as her friend. As she told them
about why she changed her name, why she followed the notes
instructions, that she got the note from Karl, and even that she
didn't want this to ruin a friendship, Dimitri felt his resolve
to be distant with the woman fading. He couldn't see her
suffering like that and not offer some reprieve.
Dimitri moved closer to her, putting a hand on her shoulder and
offering her a sympathetic frown. "I understand...It's terrible
that it could have come at the expense of Luna, but I understand
needing to protect your family and how that can cloud your
judgement in all else. I still see you as my friend, even if I
feel a bit..off about this whole thing." He said since he more
than once stuck his neck out for Alycianna, even if they fought
like cats and dogs. However, there was a stipulation to all of
this. Marcella wasn't completely clear of guilt in his mind, but
he could try to just accept it, even if his trust in her was
irreparably damaged. "Nesryn's trying to figure out why someone
would hand Karl that note. We can try to help make sure they
don't hurt your family. But I need your word you won't harm
Luna, if you genuinely feel like you can make that promise." He
stated, his look becoming more critical, as he was struggling
with his own indecision here. "I don't think it's fair to have
you arrested or reported, since I'm sure we all know that
penalty would be steep and most likely lethal. Whoever wrote
that note knew that and banked on you taking the fall. Your
family would suffer and I don't want that...I also admittedly
would hate myself for not trying to help after all you've done
for me..." He then glanced to Nesryn, wondering where her head
was at with all this. It seemed like she was understanding of
Marcella's position and furthermore was even considering that
this plot extended past the house staff. That was going to be
tricky to navigate. They couldn't even be sure Karl knew who
gave him the note and from there, if that happened, they
wouldn't have any leads at all.
"So I guess this means talking to Karl again? But I doubt he'll
remember much." He admitted since he was also sure Karl would
want to shove them off and not speak to them when he clearly had
something against Elvi.

Nesryn watched the interaction placidly and did not interfere at
at all; the two of them needed the moment to release the tension
of what had been discovered. Liliana did look a little withdrawn
with the knowledge that she'd broken the trust she'd built up
with her closest friend and simply remained quiet as Nesryn and
Dimitri spoke.
"I already know how Karl would have received the note. I- I
recognise the handwriting. As far as that rabbit hole goes I
don't think there is much else we can do for the present"
Now she looked to Liliana, "As for you... It is best we keep the
story of Marcella, as it would be suspicious to anyone if now
she went by Liliana. Your family? I have an old connection in
their area that will be able to keep an eye out for them. So in
future, if you recieve any threats like this again I expect you
to bring them to me. Understood?"
"Yes..." she said meekly.
"What you did however, will incur consequences. As Luna's guard
I've assessed you to be a risk to her and you shall no longer
spend as much time in her presence as you are used to. It may
seem harsh, but her safety is priority and you've proved
yourself dangerous to that- no matter the intention. I'll take
my leave now.'
With that, Nesryn moved from the room, steps purposeful and
swift as she weaved her way to the deceased lord's garden. The
afternoon sun was warm on her skin as she walked across the
grass to the shade of the trees. When here, she let herself
shakily sit down, her fingers digging into the soil.
Farren that sick basta*d. Messing with her contract- What did he
have to gain? She knew he was part of Asena's campaign group but
didn't he sense that Malachi would be his own undoing? There's
no need to sabotage the house of his future wife. Hell- they
weren't even married yet.
Nesryn took a slow breath and shut her eyes as she sat there.
She really really did not want to confront Farren...

Re: Chapter 0.9: Duty and Disobedience

Dimitri’s expression fell when Nesryn said she recognized the
handwriting. Well then why wasn’t she saying who it was? Was it
someone she knew prior to working in the home? Dimitri was about
to ask, but Nesryn seemed to glaze over it and kept speaking
like that information wasn’t pertinent. She wasn’t going to tell
him who it was, that much was clear. Did it matter really if he
didn’t know who they were nor could he do anything about it? He
just hoped she didn’t have intentions of confronting whoever
this was on her own. It just seemed dangerous...They seemed
dangerous.
The offer of protection to Lilliana’s family was kind and it
made Dimitri ease a little. At least Nesryn was on the same page
of not turning her in for this. Also, the idea that she had ties
to people that could look out for Lilliana’s family made him
wonder just what Nesryn was involved in. You didn’t gain allies
like that just being someone’s guard...But that didn’t matter
and wasn’t any of his business. He was also sure she wouldn’t
willingly share that information either.
Dimitri watched her leave after she ordered the restrictions on
Lilliana’s interactions with Luna. He understood that reasoning
and didn’t argue that it was for the best. However, he made a
move to follow her but paused. Perhaps she needed a moment alone
to gather her thoughts? If she wasn’t back by dinner he could
perhaps go look for her to be sure she was alright. He gave a
worried huff before looking to Lilliana. “I’m sure she meant
what she said about getting your family protection...And that
she recognized the handwriting. Maybe she can speak with that
person and we can get this solved.” He reassured Lilliana but
was really reassuring himself.
After a bit of waiting to see if Nesryn emerged, Dimitri got
impatient and had something whipped up for Nesryn in the
kitchen. In all the business they hadn’t had time to eat and he
was worried she was running herself ragged. Also, it was the
only excuse he could come up with to be speaking with her.
Honestly, he wondered if she was alright after realizing who was
after Luna, but couldn’t rightly ask her that. So he knocked
lightly on her door, wondering if she had made it back there
after wherever she had gone for a majority of the afternoon. It
was nearing the evening and he was sure she might have to at
least stopped in before going to Luna. “Hey Nesryn...I took it
upon myself to check if you were hungry or—well you were gone
for a bit and I didn’t see you around near dinner so...” he
spoke through the door, finding that he was fumbling over his
words here.

Nesryn was in the process of dressing herself when she heard the
steps approaching her door, followed by a knock. She blinked a
little as he spoke to her through the door, asking to see if she
was hungry or not. Letting the silence hang a little, she pulled
her blouse on so she was decent, the hem reaching above her
knees and covering a few one of her blades at her thigh. She
wasn’t really bashful, not out of any confidence in her physical
appearance, but in the way she was conditioned to think of her
body as just another weapon or tool. No thoughts of how it might
be socially inappropriate or that she should be more reserved
and lady like in front of the man. She moved to open the door
and let him in.
“Thank you. You may sit it there” she said gesturing to the desk
before going to grab trousers and slip them on. She was quite
obviously getting ready to go somewhere and pice by piece she
began to pull on her assassins gear, really showing Dimitri just
how many weapons she carried. Within a few moments she was fully
clad in her dark leathers and standing there awkwardly. She was
nervous and for some reason she was tempted to ask Dimitri if he
might come with her- after all he’d been an important part of
the investigation until now.
She moved and took the plate, sitting on the end of her bed and
quickly setting in to eat the food given to her. It was quite
good and she looked at Dimitri.
“Thank you. This is nice”
When Nesryn was nervous or afraid, it seemed that the amount of
words she was capable of stringing together drastically
lessened.

Dimitri expected the lack of response and wondered if she was
either gone or ignoring him. Was he pissing her off by bothering
her or perhaps she just wanted him to go away? He thought about
just setting the tray down and leaving before he made things
worse with her. However, she suddenly was at the door and
opening it. He was surprised a moment when she invited him in,
since he hadn't expected to get this far. Well, he should go in
right? Or was that bad to enter a woman's room unattended at
night? He wrestled with that a moment before his interest in her
won over. He could worry about social nature later. However,
when he went to step in and she opened the door more, Dimitri
caught sight of her state of undress. He almost dropped the
tray, mostly because he tripped over the door frame from lack of
paying attention. What the hell was she wearing? And why did she
not put more on if she knew it was him? He felt a blush crawling
up his neck and to his cheeks as he quickly averted his eyes
from where they had previously wandered. Any man could admit
Nesryn was attractive and built from her years doing her line of
work. It was almost a crime not to admire the way she looked,
though he definitely felt like a pervert when his eyes followed
the motion of her trousers going up her pale thighs. He quickly
changed his focus from that dangerous territory and instead
noticed the blades on her person. Holy hell, did she carry all
of that on her on a daily basis? Why was she armed tooth and
nail at the moment? Why did she look like she was going
somewhere? Was she sneaking off somewhere?
He quickly was pulled from his thoughts when she spoke up about
the food, not even noticing she had moved to retrieve it. She
was being oddly quiet for Nesryn, or maybe he had gotten used to
hearing her say more when they were working together.
"It's nothing really. The cook made us all a bit of pork and
vegetables. All left overs strung together into some concoction
that wasn't half bad. It was boring at dinner without you--" He
said before realizing at the moment he was just talking to fill
the silence. So instead he steadied himself and gave her an
inquisitive look. "So why are you armed to the teeth tonight? We
know Marcella won't be messing with Luna..." He asked her, as he
felt she appreciated direct questions rather than beating around
the bush with pleasantried.

Nesryn continued to eat as he spoke, that odd, irritating
feeling running through her again at the sound of his voice. She
paused, spoon hovering st her slips as he had admitted to
missing her presence at dinner and despite Nesryn being a cold,
hardened by killing assassin... her ears went pink. Nothing else
indicated the odd flutter of emotions as she resumed eating and
Dimitri resumed his chattering.
“I’m meeting... an old friend” she managed before continuing to
eat away, noticing that the food was settling some of the unrest
in the stomach. Come to think of it, when did she last eat? Her
eyes drifted to the servant standing there and noticed he seemed
a bit flushed. Perhaps he was a little tired after all of the
past few days events. She really shouldn’t ask him to accompany
her...
“I should be back before my duties in the morning. I don’t
expect the conversation to get very far. He has a habit of...
talking in circles. I may give up before long.”
Farren has a talent in getting you to walk away thinking you’d
gotten all the answers you needed, only to realise later he
answered none of them and added more questions. Nesryn wasn’t
the best at verbal acrobatics, and while Farren had trained her
to equal him in physical skill, he far outstrode her mentally.
She quickly finished the meal and felt herself relax a little at
the sensation of feeling full. Standing, she didn’t quite know
how to tell Dimitri he should go.

Dimitri folded his arms at her saying this person she was
meeting was a friend. Why didn't he buy that? Perhaps by the
pause that she gave before calling this person a friend? Or
maybe it was the way she seemed off while talking to him? He
didn't know why but he just got this bad sense about all this.
Either way he felt uncomfortable letting her run off on her own
to meet this person.
He let her eat and tell him that she would be back by her
morning chores, but he wasn't sure he wanted her going alone.
Wasn't that dangerous? Well, she was a trained fighter and he
wasn't so...But that was besides the point. If he could help her
in some way, he didn't want her thinking he wouldn't.
"A friend? I don't know many friends I need to be armed to talk
to." He said, but realized that might have been overstepping his
bounds majorly. With a sigh to ease his worry, Dimitri gave
Nesryn a slightly more concerned look. "I'm sorry. If it is a
friend, I understand, but if you do need some kind of help, I
would't be opposed to being that help. Or what I meant is I
think it's better not to go alone if you can help it." He
offered but realized she rose and kept letting her eyes go from
him to the door. A cue to leave and leave well enough alone.
"Apologies, Nesryn if I spoke out of turn. I just get this odd
feeling like your not too... pleased to be meeting with this
guy. That's worrying, you know?" He stated, trying to be clear
with her since he was sure she could pick out his hesitation by
now. She seemed to be good at reading him and others around
them. "But I'll leave well enough alone. Good night, Nes." He
turned and headed for the door since he felt that he had really
spoken out of turn with her and maybe ruined something between
them.

Nesryn watched as Dimitri reluctantly left with an apology.
Nesryn wasn’t sure how to take his hesitation about her going.
Surely he knew that she was capable of looking after herself.
Maybe his time in a noble household had instilled the instinct
into him that women were things to be protected, guarded and
shielded from danger. It was a wholesome and pure sentiment but
Nesryn’s dark history and the nature of her occupation meant she
was no delicate flower who would swoon at the sight of blood.
His footsteps retreated and she took a steadying breath,
frowning when it was shakier than she appreciated. There was no
avoiding this, she’d initiated the confrontation herself and
backing out now would give Farren the impression that she was
weak.
Adding another blade to the assortment she already had, just in
case, she set off herself. It wasn’t too hard to make her way
through the house unnoticed; she’d memorised the goings of the
household and knew the routes less taken. Without trouble she
slipped outside.
-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-
Nesryn went by foot to the tavern, the same one the guard had
been at when he was meant to be on duty guarding Luna. A small
pang of anxiety rang through her at the thought. Was Luna safe
with her out here? She shoved that aside; the guards were the
more capable ones and she’d only be gone for an hour at the
most. With her cowl up, the Elviyenne woman went mostly
unnoticed, except for the few that moved that little further
away from the shadowy figure. Nesryn came to a halt in the
street, across the road from the tavern she was about to enter,
her finger fiddling with the edge of her cowl in nervous habit.
Her she was... she still had a chance to turn back. Pretend she
forgot she’d even made this meeting. Pretend her duties at the
household prevented her from coming. She stood there, trying to
garner the courage.

Dimitri wrestled with the decision of leaving Nesryn be for a
while before his thoughts got the better of him. He wanted to be
sure she was okay, just in case this person, this friend, wasn’t
out to harm her as they did Luna. He knew she was a strong
fighter, but that didn’t mean she had to tackle this by herself.
It also just took one misstep or problem to occur resulted in
someone getting hurt. And he didn’t want that someone to be
Nesryn.
Dimitri knew deep down that this would piss her off, following
her on purpose. Clearly by the way she pinned him with a knife
at his throat before should have deterred him. But it seemed his
better sense left him when Nesryn was involved. So he snuck out,
slipping out the gate with the staff taking leave for the night.
Surely, Luna would be alright without him tonight...
He slipped along after her, trying to keep a decent distance
back as he tailed her. Where was she headed this late at night?
Where would her friend be located? He saw her pause across the
street from the tavern and ducked behind a carriage, tilting his
head some at the sight. Why would she go into that seedy place?
He knew to keep back till he was sure she was safe. Then he
could leave and pretend this stupid idea of his never happened.

Nesryn reasoned that before she would make any decision- to flee
or otherwise -she would see if Farren had actually decided to
grace her with his presence. After all, he was a busy man and
often ditched minor meetings in favour of more important
connections. Nesryn was, she assumed, lower down on the priority
list. With quick and quiet steps she crossed the street and
slipped in to hide behind a cart. What Nesryn was definitely not
expecting was to come nose to nose with none other than Dimitri.
Only for a moment did her eyes widen slightly in surprise and
shock; then they narrowed in anger and concern. She glared at
him, grabbing his by the front of the shirt and simply looking
into his face for a moment, unable to find the words through all
the curses crossing her mind.
"What... in the BLOODY HELL are you doing here?!" she hissed at
him, her jaw clenched and eyes darting to the streets around
them. No one seemed to be paying any mind to them at all.
Nesryn could punch him right now- she could tear her hair out-
Why was he here?! He could get killed or mugged or... she gave a
growl of irritation at his explanation before letting him go
with a rough shove.
"Fine- Fine! You can come with me but..." she turned another
searing glare toward him "So help me if you open that mouth of
yours I'll personally see that your silver tongue is removed.
Understood?"
She went to the window, looking in. He was there. At a table to
the side of the tavern, arms crossed and leatherbound notebook
on his lap. Her mouth went dry and the nerves prevented her from
being able to communicate to Dimitri beyond a head gesture for
him to follow. She went in, eyes being drawn to her for a moment
before they went back to what they were doing. Nesryn approached
the table and wordlessly took a seat across from the spymaster.
Farren's eyes were rivoted on the servant beside her and Farren
quirked a brow, "And who might you be? You're a butler that's
for sure. With the way the blisters on your hands are where a
tray would rub through one's gloves. If you're with Nesryn I
assume you're a Witheres servant- Luna's butler if I'm correct.
Single, lonely, a little too fond of drinking sometimes and with
an arduous infatuation with my fellow assassin here" with the
last assumption he gestured towards Nesryn whose eyes flickered
a little with the realisation of why Dimitri often made her so
uncomfortable. He... cared about her.
Farren leant forward a little, giving Dimitri that oily smile.
