       [font=georgia]Calliope Fluer Lachance
Location: Selenlar Xilquinal Estate, Grand Comuna, Marieve,
       Alessandria
       Company: Archibald Henston Whetherford
       ([member=6]MISSimissyou[/member]) & Esther Violle
       ([member=2]Pyxie[/member])
Extravagance and elegance were two words that were undoubtedly
Alessandrian. It was hard not to call these words to mind when
you got a mere look at the ballroom the Truce Ball was held in.
Gold leafed decorative molding covered every surface not made
from the purest white marble. Arched windows and columns
stretched high unto the vaulted ceilings If eyes wandered to
further inspection of the ceiling a motif of the founding of
Alessandria was painted with such detail it would awe the
greatest artistic minds. At the center hung a grand chandelier
that looked as if diamonds rained down upon the guests. Guests
who all gathered from all corners of Erudi to experience it’s
splendor of the grand event. Who could resist the beauty,
pageantry, and intrigue that passed from ear to ear in hushed
whispers in parlor rooms, that could be felt in the spaced
between the dancing bodies, and that was heard in the petty
sarcasm of aristocrats that were dueling with words?
Calliope Lachance certainly couldn’t resist, as was clear by the
way a smile stayed plastered on her painted lips. While it was
easy to get lost in the gradure around her, her mind was not
swayed from her task. Information was king tonight and how she
loved the game of hunting it. She could see her target mingling
with a Truce member across the room and knew she would have to
wait to strike. After all, the main method of prying information
out of these damnable men was to use charm and wit. Perhaps show
a bit of skin here, a carefully placed brush of the arm there,
bat your lashes with a giggle, and make them think you were just
some naive little thing that could handle their burdens as you
       fed them more alcohol.
Archibald needed this information and she wasn’t about to let it
slip out of her grasp. She had a reputation to uphold...Well,
one that wasn’t mired by her parent’s obsession with her being
their ‘douce petite poupée’. She cringed when they referred to
her as some sort of object like a doll. Something for them to
dress up and parade around at social gatherings. While Calliope
was no stranger to the importance of a ladies manners and
etiquette of court, she would not dare to allow it to be the
foundation on which she was valued. It was demeaning and hardly
fit the plans she had for herself. She would one day be Lady
Lachance, a name respected and valued to Erudi as a woman of
influence, elegance, and intellect. She would not end up some
fanciful bride on some man twice her senior that treated her as
nothing more than something pretty to look at and warm his bed.
She detested the mere idea with such vehemence she vowed her
parents sending her to the Whetherford Etiquette school would be
the last attempt to control her. They would rue the day they
tried to put shackles on and tame Calliope.
[color=pink]“Can you believe we’re here, Esther? I cannot
believe Lady Whetherford got us an invitation.” Calliope’s eyes
went to the woman she had locked arms with, a fellow student who
she had come to treasure as a dear friend. Esther was a pretty
and feisty woman who reminded Calliope a bit of herself before
she realized how limitless her potential could be. While not the
loudest or most fierce, Esther had a pride and strength to her
that Calliope felt she could mold. Hence why she agreed to be
her companion for the evening….and to bring her into the fold of
the plans she had. After discovering Calliope’s correspondance
with Archibald and other men of power in the city, Esther had
asked to join her in her dealings with the underworld of Erudi.
While at first Calliope was hesitant, the loyalty and tenacity
she showed eventually made her cave. What? Calliope had a soft
       spot for her friend.
“I think we should thank our sponsors, don’t you?” She purred in
her ear, knowing fully well that she had told Esther about
meeting Lord Archibald Whetherford tonight. If she intended to
have a hand in the business, why not go straight to the source?
She pulled Esther along with a devious giggle, weaving around
ladies in large ballgowns and gentlemen that looked far too
stuffy to draw attention. She spotted the Elvi man across the
way and followed her keen senses to the spot she last caught him
       mingling with others.
Calliope released her hold on Esther and approached the older
man for her, as was customary of the companion. “Greetings, Lord
Whetherford. It has been too long and delightfully not the last
conversation we shall have this evening. Might I introduce my
dear friend, Esther Violle.” Calliope gave a curtsy, motioning
Esther over to join the conversation. “She has anticipated this
meeting all night as she wishes to discuss merit and her growing
interest in business. I told her I knew just the man to sate her
curiosities.” She passed a knowing smile to Esther, hoping the
woman could keep her cool and play up a good front for the man.
He had a business to run and wouldn’t just accept anyone to
trust working for it. She put her own neck on the line for
Esther and she hoped she made good on that promise to be an
asset and not a hindrance. Not that Calliope would adore her any
less if she couldn't handle this lifestyle...[/color][/font]

       Violle (@Pyxie)
Another day, another ball, another excuse to drink. Time seemed
to be going on slower than usual at this particular event. The
first issue was that Archibald had made a promise to his wife
that he would abstain from drinking this evening as she needed
to attend the party late for her business and it was, therefor,
his duty to attend to their child. In his opinion, the child
could care for himself. If not, the staff at their estate could
care for him. Ordinarily he would simply say that he didn't wish
it and his dear wife would comply with his wishes. That was,
after all, her nature. It applied perfectly to her job and he
sense she held within her some form of domestic bliss but he
found the whole task of being married to a woman like her to be
tiring at best. There was no flame in her. All she had was
simple and unyielding obedience. He glared dismally into the
decanter of water at his elbow and sighed as he poured himself
       another, regrettably, dismal drink.
Although the lack of libations was a limitation to his enjoyment
he was also acutely aware that enjoyment wasn't necessarily
important for this evenings events. He had managed to convince
his wife that allowing some of the more *appropriate* young
women from the school to attend tonight's proceedings would be a
benefit. After all, the benefactors of the finishing school
would want to see what progress could be made with the young and
rebellious women of today. Half the men here likely still
opposed the practice of women reading but they did have fat
pockets and far too much time on their hands. Many of them had
rich sons as well who were more than willing to pay extravagant
prices for a good time and that was what he was interested in
more than anything else. There was a certain little bird from
the school that was in attendance tonight that would be able to
give him enough information by the end of the night to either
strike it rich or help take down any who opposed him. As it so
happened, that little bird was making her way towards him right
now. And it appeared she was bringing a friend.
He bowed respectfully to the ladies as Calliope began to speak.
She was more than just an elegant young lady, she was talented.
She had a silver tongue and a knack for getting people to tell
her exactly what she wanted to know. Not only that, she had
ambition. He knew she wouldn't be under him employ long. She was
simply using him as a stepping stone to further her own goals
and desires. Honestly, that suited him just fine. He was more
than just a little curious about where this woman's path would
lead and he knew he would likely need to be weary of her in the
future but, hopefully, they could stay in good confidence in the
future and even prove to be allies one day.
He felt one eyebrow raise slightly at the mention of business.
So this other young woman was a possible recruit, was she? "It
is, indeed, a pleasure to see you again and in such high
spirits, Miss Lachance." Archibald said formally. He was aware
some of the bachelors, or *pigs* as he affectionately referred
to them in his head, in the room would be hanging onto every
conversation the young ladies had. He knew of one Humana pig
over the age of 70 that was looking to find a new young bride
out of the school and he found the concept to be...well, he
wasn't sure he had a word to describe it. The age didn't bother
him so much, it was more the fact that his wife had died only
two moons past. Perhaps love truly was a dead concept not worth
pondering over... "And Miss Violle, what a pleasure to make your
acquaintance. I do hope one day my name is more synonymous with
my vineyards than with my wife's school. Lady Whetherford puts
so much time and effort into your education I do hope her name
is more respected then mine in that fine establishment." He
offered a smile at this. He would often speak in a way that
offered his wife more individuality. He knew she wanted nothing
more than to be known as a good and devoted wife and mother but
he wanted others to know that she had some sort of value. He
only wished she had enough drive to see any value in herself as
       well.
It was only upon addressing the young woman that he became fully
aware of just how stunningly beautiful she was. The saying of
beauty being in the eye of the beholder was often tossed about
but he was certain no one would think twice about labeling her
as beautiful. He also was aware that she was holding a fan. He
wasn't sure why this intrigued him at all. Fans were, after all,
completely ordinary. Maybe it was simply the way she held it? He
couldn't be sure...but he was beginning to suspect that the
young lady could prove useful to him, even only having just met
her. Perhaps it would be worth taking a gamble and letting her
into the fold. "I may not be an expert on the subject but
business is a particular love of mine. I would be more than
happy to discuss it further if you like." He glanced between
both women as he spoke, giving them both an equal amount of
attention. "I must ask how you are enjoying the party so far? I
would loath to think of anyone having a poor time at such a
lavish event." He was aware the irony of the statement. He had
been having a horrid time so far. Hopefully all of that was
       about to change.

Calliope wasn’t surprised that Archibald was his usual proper
and gentlemanly self, even if Cali could sense a strain there.
The water glass in his hand while the people around them killed
about with wine from his vineyards said it all. Poor man was
made to be the responsible husband tonight. No doubt for his
spoiled brat or his sweet, but plain wife. Honestly, Cali didn’t
dislike the Whetherford’s, hence why she agreed to work with
Archie for an alliance and his support. The business he was
running was not her forte, but it kept her busy, involved in her
favorite games, and made her feel a sense of relevance outside
of an existence that wanted her to be a prim little socialite.
Not to mention, it was fun and got her invited to grand events
such as this. She just hoped Esther made a good impression, as
she knew the woman could. It seemed already that she had
Archie’s attention and not his usual polite distance or
       calculating regard...
When asked if they were enjoying themselves, Cali’s red lips
pulled into a bright and humored smile. “Of course, who wouldn’t
enjoy themselves in all this luxury. I dare say I envy your
access to such events, my lord. Though, my high spirits keep me
ever grateful your wife considered us the picture of
sophistication to represent her school. It’s an honor. Truly.”
She said, knowing at least that he had some pull in it, since
she was needed there to help gather information on a particular
crime Lord that was still chatting up the hostess of the
event...Great...he had friend’s in high places...
“But are you enjoying yourself, sir? Esther, dear, surely you
feel the same?” She asked to get her friend and Lord Whetherford
talking more so that he could see if Esther was in or out. She
personally wanted her help tonight in shading out information,
figuring the attention of two young women could help loosen lips
a little faster. Be that as it may, she was being patient but
pushy, as she had the tendency to be when she wanted things to
go a particular way...She already trusted Esther completely, but
she wasn’t the one in charge now was she? Well, at least not yet
anyways. She still had a lot to learn and experience before
       then...

Truly the perfect display of grace and etiquette. The ladies
before him were clearly the perfect selection to show off the
school. Archie wasn't entirely sure his wife's tutelage had
anything to do with the way they held themselves but it would
put a good message out to the wealthy patrons present at this
rather dull event. Not to mention, if Calliope continued to play
so pleasantly to the crowd she would have no trouble at all
gathering information. Of course, not all of the information she
gathered would be important but it could prove useful later on,
either to himself or to her in the future.
Out of the two of them it was Esther that he fount the most
interesting. Although, he mentally admonished himself, Miss
Violle would be a better way to address the young lady. Perhaps
Lady Violle suited her better. Although she held herself with a
similar grace to Calliope he could tell that their interests
were not entirely aligned. While he knew Calliope would grow
into someone great and powerful in her own right he could see
something even more striking in Miss Violle...He simply couldn't
tell what it was just yet.
"The gardens are quite charming." He said simply, his gaze
moving from Esther's...Miss Violle's face to rest on one of the
many glass doors that seemed to line the halls. "The head
gardener is actually someone I have known since I was a boy. He
was a boy of 19 when he started working here and now he is in
charge of all the grounds of this place. He has a certain way
with things that grow." He smiled, looking back at the ladies.
"I suspect magis is involved but who can say." He added in a
humored tone. "There are further refreshments being served
       outside if you..."
His gaze shifted once more as he saw his wife making his way
towards them. She had, up until this point, been entertaining
other guests and ensuring the school would get more funding for
the coming year. She held a glass in her hand, likely the same
one she had been nursing all night, still barely touched. If she
wasn't going to drink why did she insist that he needn't either.
"Amilda, my dear." He said as she approached, the words coming
out more stiffly than he had intended. "It appears your students
have arrived. I was just about to show them the gardens."
Amilda Von Treu Whetherford, or Amy as he called her in private
company, smiled and curtsied formally to the two ladies, her
glass impossibly balanced between two delicate fingers, the
liquid barely moving at all as she moved. "Miss Violle, Miss
Lachance, I am so pleased you both were able to make it under
such short notice. I must say, you both look absolutely
beautiful." His wife's smile was almost blinding as she spoke.
The woman had always been beautiful. Beauty, grace, and loyalty.
Those were the worlds he would use to describe his wife. Those
also happened to be the only words he could think of when it
came to his wife. She was, truly, the perfect image of a lady.
She was that and nothing more. "Please," Amilda continued, "do
take a tour of the gardens. They are quite wonderful this time
of year. You will also find many distinguished guests all about
the grounds. Do not feel shy in speaking with them, so long as
they speak to you first. Of course, how could they resist. A
fine pair of ladies you'll make. And fine wives as well."
It took some restraint to keep his smile going and prevent his
eyes from rolling as his wife spoke. Archie highly doubted
either of the two women wanted to follow the same path she had.
Grow up, get married, serve a husband for the rest of their
lives. He knew Calliope would never settle for a drab life such
as that. He had a suspicion Miss Violle wanted nothing of the
sort as well. He took another sip of water simply for something
to do. Although having students at events such as this was
traditional, Archie had planted a seed in his wife's ear that
Miss Lachance would be the perfect candidate for the evening.
Being a dutiful woman she had complied with his suggestion. It
was too easy. She hadn't even inquired as to why he showed an
interest in a particular student coming to this event. He
doubted she cared...his face, which had begun to sink, snapped
back into a perfectly composed smile as Amy finished speaking.
The show must go on, after all.

       Calliope Fluer Lachance
Location: Selenlar Xilquinal Estate, Grand Comuna, Marieve,

Company: Archibald Henston Whetherford and Amilda Von Treu
       Whetherford ([member=6]MISSimissyou[/member]) & Esther Violle
       ([member=2]Pyxie[/member])
Calliope watched the two speak, looking for any indication or
detail that would hint at approval or disapproval. Archie seemed
oh so engaged in conversation with Esther and Esther seemed to
be talking much more with the older man than Calliope previously
noted. Her pretty little eyes wandered, however, beyond just the
man's face to his person. That intrigued her like a cat watching
a mouse flitting about her space. Esther was checking him out?
Calliope's eyes narrowed ever so slightly at her dear friend, a
little smile pulling at the corner of her lips. 'Oh we are so
discussing this when I get her alone. Older married men? Esther,
you, kitten, are too cute...' She thought, but her mind wandered
away from her analysis back to the conversation when the lord
invited them to see the gardens. Oh? Was he obliging her
friend's interest? Honestly, Calliope couldn't care less about
flora and fauna, but she would oblige because it made Esther
happy. What were friends for after all?
The trip to the gardens wasn't meant to be for the moment, as in
came sweeping dear Lady Whetherford. And that drew a silent fury
in Calliope's gut. The woman symbolized everything she couldn't
stand about Alessandria in one person. She was like this
porcelain doll with a painted on face, posed to perfection, and
put on the shelf to be admired by all. She was graceful, polite,
and feminine in all the right ways that earned men's favor. With
her position and power she could be so much more...Amilda could
be such a powerful voice for young women in Alessandria and
instead she chose to further these infernal social rules that
she was oh so skilled at.
Sure, she taught Calliope what fork to use and how to curtsy
with the grace of fairy, but any true talent was learned by
herself. Other than that, she regarded her as if she would a
painting. Pretty to look at, but only such. She despised
       interpreting art anyways.
Calliope dipped into a curtsy in greeting, though the grace the
woman displayed in her curtsy baffled her slightly. How in
Wraithus had she done that so perfectly? She buttoned her lip,
however, and simply beamed back at the woman. "Lady Whetherford,
I'm in your debt truly for this opportunity. If we even look
half as radiant as you do tonight, then it is all due to your
nurturing in our lessons." Calliope gushed to keep the annoyance
from showing in her eyes or tone at the wives comment. How dare
she assume Calliope wanted to be some trinket for these men to
woo and fight over. They had better chances winning the
affections of the house cat she had seen milling about the
property. But she enjoyed their glances, their lust, and gawking
when she needed it. How else was she going to get into their
       tiny little minds?
"Of course, my lady. Esther and I wish to only do you proud. I
have spotted a few guests that know my father, in fact.
Including Lord Marseille." She said, clearly stating her
target's name who had done business with her father on an
occasion or two. Perhaps the grimy little man was like a demon.
If she said his name enough maybe it would make him appear. "But
I'm sure we will find plenty of people to speak with. Would you
two care to join us or are you still making the rounds?" She
asked politely, even though she was ready to show young Esther
the ropes and get what she needed. Maybe, Esther could keep
Archie company if she wished to stay out of the fun. Besides,
tonight was about information and planning. Archie did claim to
already know a man that might be able to help them along the
way. Some inventor or whatever that could perhaps help in
shutting down Archie's competition for good...

Archibald was having a hard time keeping his eyes from
Esther...Miss Violle. She was pretty, that much was plain to
anyone, but there was something else there he couldn't quite
decipher. She was different, an enigma, someone he thought he
could gladly spend hours talking with. Calliope had a good eye
for people, that much was certain. He made brief eye contact
with Miss Violle and it took a moment before he lowered his
eyes. They didn't make it far, however, resting on her delicate
hand, fingers poised in an elegant display as her fan fluttered
gently. He blinked and looked back at his wife who was
positively beaming at the young women.
"My dears," She said, voice full of something like pride. "You
are both so perfect." Ordinarily he knew the woman to make a
much more fanciful display of words. She was rather skilled in
the art of court, more so then he, and was always poised with
the perfect manner and words for any occasion. At the moment she
seemed at a rare loss for them. Apparently she found these two
to be something more than ordinary students...
"Amilda, my dear." Archie interjected, his tone carrying more of
an official note then a warm one. "I believe you might be in a
position to help start a conversation between Miss Lachance and
Lord Marseille?" He passed a glance towards Calliope as he
spoke. "She seems rather interested in speaking with him as, I
believe she mention, her family and his have somewhat of a
history. Perhaps it would be the best way to show your students
off to the guests." He shifted his glance back over Esther
before moving back to his wife. "And I can take Miss Violle on a
tour of the gardens? That way both students can be seen by all
       the guests this evening."
Amy's smile never wavered as she listened to her husbands
suggestion. The way she responded, however, made it clear that
his words were always taken with the 'sort of authority only a
husband can manage'. At least, that was what she would say about
it if she felt free enough to use her tongue for anything other
than flattery. "Of course, you are quite right." She said,
responding to his words with a short curtsy. "I have known Lord
Marseille for years, Miss Lachance, and I am sure he would be
all but too happy to speak with you. He is a frequent patron of
our school, as I am sure you are aware." She smiled at her
       student.
Archie took this opportunity to take Miss Violle gently by the
elbow and lead her towards the large glass doors that led out
toward the gardens. Although it was a gentle touch and a gesture
not uncommon between acquaintances, he felt a sort of flutter in
his chest as he touched her. She seemed so delicate next to him
that is almost startled him that she could be touched at all,
half expecting his hand to pass through her as if she were
flower petals resting on the surface of a pond. He dropped his
hand as the reached the door and dropped his half finished water
glass of on a servant's tray, choosing to pick up two slender
wine flutes instead. Perhaps he would be drinking tonight after
       all.
He handed one of the flutes to Esther as they exited the stuffy
building and entered the fragrant and open gardens. "I hope you
enjoy wine." He managed, not sure what else to say to fill the
sudden silence. "Please, feel free to look around." The words
felt rather clumsy on his tongue and he took a sip from his own
glass, shifting his gaze from her face to one of the rose bushes
       just outside the doors.

       ([member=2]Pyxie[/member])
Calliope noted the two passing glances and leering like a pair
of horny teenagers. Honestly, she was surprised by Esther's
attraction, but she would support her friend as it was just a
simple crush. Nothing, of course, would come of it. This was
Lord Whetherford, a public figure and owner a vineyard. He was
not the kind of man that would risk his business or Esther's
future over a tryst. Calliope could trust they both would be
smart at this event at least. Even if they were going for a
little stroll in the garden together. 'Oh the scandal!' She
snickered in her mind as she spared a look at the room, catching
a few stray glances in their direction from nobles wondering who
the girls were that had the attention of the Whetherfords.
However, her attention returned when Archie worked in a way for
her to speak with Lord Marseille. Seems she would need to use
the prowess of Lady Whetherford as a jumping off point. That she
could work to her advantage...But that meant leaving Esther
alone with Archibald. "Why that would be delightful. Thank you,
my lady." She gushed with a knowing gleam in her eyes as she
gave Archie a bow of her head before she turned to Esther.
"Enjoy the gardens, my friend. We will meet up again soon." She
leaned in and gave Esther a hug, so that she could whisper in
her ear. "Keep your wits about you. Remember, eyes and ears are
everywhere at court." She told her quietly before she went to
follow Lady Amilda away from the pair.
As they made their way to Lord Marseille, she noted he was
currently talking with Lord and Lady Whitheres. She was familiar
with the Whitheres as she had grown up around their middle son
Nazereth as a child, since they were close in age and their
mothers attended salons together. Despite her mothers’ attempts
to set them up, Nazereth and Calliope politely refused because
they saw each other as siblings. Besides, the LaChance family
outranked the Whitheres and her father wasn’t about to let his
precious flower marry down. So they remained friends, even if
Nazereth often scolded her for her behavior as it often got her
       in trouble.
They entered the conversation after Lord Marseille finished a
joke, drawing laughter out of the men there. Of course Lady
Whetherford breezed in like a dream, greeting the Lady and Lords
present and introducing Calliope to them. The sight of her drew
warm smiles from the Whitheres, who bowed and curtsied to her.
Calliope returned their gracious greetings, even if she demurely
looked toward Lord Marseille as if she found his attention
       flattering.
“Ah Miss LaChance. It’s been ages.” Lady Whitheres said with
familiarity towards the young girl before her attention went to
Lady Whetherford. “And Lady Whetherford, it’s a pleasure. I feel
as though we haven’t had many occasions to speak. As you know, I
was graced with all boys as you were equally blessed. How is
your little one?” She asked in a way that drew Lady
Whetherford’s attention, providing Calliope the opportunity she
needed to speak with Lord Marseille. Before she could speak,
Lord Whitheres cut in with a jovial chuckle.
“You've grown into such a refined young woman, Miss LaChance.
I’m sure old Nicolas is impressed with your progress. I’m sure
even my son would notice a change. He’s here you know? I finally
pulled him from his books and hopefully he will find a potential
bride.” Calliope laughed alongside the men, covering her mouth
with a gloved hand as to play up her innocence. She knew very
well dear Nazereth was a people person, but preferred meaningful
conversation as opposed to twittery chatter of fancy at these
events. It was why he often complained to Calliope about the
women his father tried to set him up with that were either
vapid, too quiet, or only cared for his money. She was sure none
of those types were in short supply here, hence why he was
probably off hiding somewhere to escape having to entertain the
talks. She hadn’t even realized he was in attendance till his
       father announced as such.
“As we know Sir Nazereth can be prone to enjoy his books to
lively conversations. Fret not. I’m sure his perfect match lies
in wait for him. Why, I will keep my eyes open to possibilities
as well, my lord.” Her response earned her a grin and a nod
       from Lord Whitheres.
“It would be appreciated and generous of you, Miss. I only wish
for him to court a young woman of such caliber as yourself. But
that is the dream of most parents. Not that you would know, Lord
Marseille.” The joking drew the older man into the conversation,
one who Calliope knew had remained a bachelor with a vast
fortune. While rumor had it that he had many that vied for his
attention and warmed his bed, most stated he was a man with a
wandering eye and a taste for young women. Hence why Calliope
spared no time giggling coquettishly when Lord Marseille
appraised her and seemed to find something he liked.
“While I agree, my dear friend, I can still admire the passions
and jubilance of young love and games of attraction.” He bowed
and took Calliope’s offered hand, kissing the top as if she were
royalty. While the action sent a disgusted chill through
Calliope’s core, she let the action happen with a bat of her
lashes and a dreamy look. As he rose again, her attention went
to a servant passing by with a tray of drink. “It is a true
delight to have a LaChance grace these halls. It’s a shame Lord
LaChance has never introduced you to his friends at court. I
hope you’ve enjoyed your evening at your first event of this
magnitude.” Her painted lips pulled into a coy smile, as she
knew this was his attempt at flirting with her while remaining
subtle. Thankfully for him, Lord Whitheres was already
two-sheets to the wind and was hardly paying them mind as his
wife had asked him a question. Calliope caught the passing
servant and grabbed two glasses, offering one to Lord Marseille
with a bow of her head, a sign she accepted his invitation to
speak further and intended to give him her attention.
“Then we must make up for my father’s mistake, my lord...I would
be delighted to become better acquainted and have a familiar
face to rely on in this room full of strangers…” . Calliope’s
words dripped with honey and proper delight, even if her eyes
held a suggestion there she was sure the man felt. It was hard
for men not to be led into her web with pretty little lies...

A strained smile had taken shape on Nazereth’s lips, his hands
fiddling with the cuffs of his jacket behind his back. This
young woman, bless her heart, had been going on and on about her
dress and how much it cost. There was something about her
sister’s cat mingled into the droning conversation that seemed
like endless torment for the young man. But he tried to show her
respect and interest, nodding at the right moments, laughing at
her jokes, and giving the appropriate “ah yes” and “oh no” when
he was called to answer. However, it was clear to anyone in the
room--well except his conversation partner--that he was
suffering through this one-sided conversation with a smile.
Nazereth was trying to be better about speaking with courting
and speaking with potential matches here tonight. His mother had
fussed with him only hours before that he wasn’t taking this
mission to find him a wife seriously. His argument was what
young man wanted to be settled down to just anyone? Perhaps it
was a fanciful idea, but he wished to find a real connection
with someone, perhaps find the love he read about in those poems
and songs the artists regarded as master works. While his
brother’s teased him for the very idea, he knew he was not
content to be trapped in a loveless marriage and miserable for
the rest of his days. He wanted a partner, a friend, and someone
he could grow old with who he enjoyed being around at the very
least. Was that too much to ask? Well, that desire appeared to
be out of reach for him if his last 10 conversations be the
standard...While these young women were lovely and would surely
make great wives for someone in the future, Nazereth found their
personalities lacking and the connection to them as dry as a
desert…Was he doomed to suffer through a marriage that felt like
a job, like his older brother Caerus and his wife Kallista?
The idea made him wince, especially when the woman gave a snort
of laughter at her own joke. Oh, he had zoned out and missed
everything she just said. It was obvious she hadn’t noticed at
the very least...Nazereth regarded the garden’s outside with
some longing, as that seemed to be a path to escape. His longing
gaze would have gotten him in trouble if the woman’s friend
hadn’t approached her. This allowed Nazereth his opportunity for
escape, which he took with perhaps too much enthusiasm as he
bowed to the woman and took his leave for the doors.
He took in a breath outside, loving the scent of the fresh
flowers that perfumed the crisp night air. He had always loved
to spend his afternoons with a good book in his family gardens,
as it was the most peaceful place on the property. Besides, who
didn’t feel so inherently blessed by the natural beauty around
them in such a place? It certainly wasn't in short supply here
at this mansion. Nazereth was caught up in admiring such a
beautiful scene when he ran into something--well someone solid.
It was a simple brush, nothing forceful or jarring, but enough
that both would find they were caught in the other's way.
"Oh--" His words caught in his mouth the moment a pair of lovely
eyes flicked up to meet his. Nazereth felt a warmth rise to his
face at her gaze, especially since his tongue was tied and he
wasn't sure why. The young blonde in his path looked unsure of
him in a way that made her hair shift away from her face and her
brows rise in surprise. Nazereth found himself noting how
stunning she looked in the moonlight amongst the flowers like
she was one herself. "Ah apologies, Miss. I didn't mean to
interrupt you--It seems I was caught up in admiring the gardens
and didn't notice your elegance before me. Not that you're
forgettable or easily ignored--or that I noticed--" He
stammered, not even noting Archibald there as his gaze stayed
fixed on the beauty before him. "Right--ah--you're probably
admiring the flowers yourself. I should probably let you get
back to that. Again sorry." He moved out of her way, bowing
awkwardly and wondering why he was so flustered. Usually he
found words came easily, but around her it seemed like his heart
was racing and he felt oddly twittery...

Archie was used to the rhythms of court, the conversation and
company ebbing like an ocean tide. As soon as one conversation
was evaded another came just as quickly on it heels, one person
traded out for another like flotsam on the waves. The fact that
he was used to the tedious mandates of etiquette that court
required did not make him like it any more than he did. In fact,
he often found himself enjoying it less and less. His opinion of
disdain increased as the young man, One Nazereth de Whitheres,
entered the conversation. Being a gentleman, of course, Archie
simply stood and smiled, allowing the man to speak.
Despite the careful control he schooled on his expression,
Archie couldn't help but raise an eyebrow as the young man
stumbled over his words. Apparently he was quite taken with his
companion. He spared a glance in Esther's direction, attempting
to discern from her expression how she felt about the intrusion.
Ordinarily he was quite skilled at reading expressions. In this
case, however, there appeared to be a fan in the way, placed
delicately to conceal her expression, her wrist swaying gently.
The little fan she carried with her seemed to be constantly in
motion and did nothing to quell the intrigue Archie felt towards
the young woman. He wasn't sure what his wife was teaching at
that school of hers but it seemed Esther had taken away from her
lessons the skills of charm and intrigue. Or, more likely, she
had mastered those skills on her own. Chances were she was
unaware of the affect she seemed to be having on all the men at
this gathering. Not only had she caught Nazereth's attentions as
well as his own, she had also managed to attract the stares of
many bachelors at this event. She had her pick of men, that much
       was certain.
Archie had opened his mouth to speak to the young man in front
of them but, before he could speak, the man had taken his leave,
stammering and bowing awkwardly. Archie closed his mouth and
felt himself sigh. Ah, yes, the beginnings of young love...
"That," Archie said, looking again at Esther, "was Nazereth de
Whitheres. His parents drag him along to these events to find a
suitable match I believe. He never seems entirely too interested
to be in attendance. I can never decide if he is a romantic
searching for the right mate or if he simply prefers the company
of men." He had meant the last comment as a quip and felt a knot
tie in his stomach as he spoke. He knew his humor wasn't
conventional and many found him less than humorous. He hoped she
       wouldn't think less of him...

The sound of her laughter rang like music in his ears and Archie
felt the tension in his shoulders subside slightly. For a moment
he allowed himself to imagine a different life where he could
hear her laugh like that always and, possibly, be the cause of
her joy. In the years since he had married Amy he had never
heard her laugh, at least not in the same easy way Esther seemed
to. He felt the corners of his mouth tilt upward as he watched
her, hand trailing over the foliage and commenting on the
gardens around them. She was beautiful.
He turned his gaze to a greenhouse a little ways off the garden
path. Calliope would meet him there to deliver the information
as soon as she had it. With any luck she would be able to
squeeze a little extra out of the old man. Marseille did have a
soft spot for beautiful young women and Calliope was the perfect
       card to play...
Archie took a sip of wine and looked back over at Esther. He
could feel desire creeping in around the corners of his mind and
shook his head slightly to try to clear it. He was, after all,
chained down to a rather unfortunate marriage and she had a
future ahead of her. One that could be easily destroyed if he
were to act on any selfish desires of his own. Not to mention,
he was likely the last thing on her mind. Her gaze would more
likely go towards a younger man such as Nazereth, not an older
and married man like himself. It would be wiser to admire her
from a distance, as if she were a rare bloom in a gated garden
he could only see through a series of wrought iron bars...
"The outdoor gardens are beautiful, yes." He mused as he looked
at her. His wine glass was still held in his left hand but he
kept his right placed just behind his back. He had the absurd
notion to tuck a strand of loose hair behind her ear and had
decided that keeping his hands out of the way might be the
wisest course of action at the moment. "But the greenhouse has
much rarer blooms. I could show you, if you like?" He dropped
his gaze from her face and looked down at a rosebush by the
path. "Unless you would prefer to stay outdoors, of course."
