Malachi quirked a brow at the formal greeting and glanced over
her shoulder to see if anyone were there. No one.
“May I come in?”
As she let him past he entered and was slightly overwhelmed by
the scent of her that lingered here and filled the room. He took
a steadying breath and turned to face her.
“We both know what happened... what I felt... I just want to
know why-“ his brow creased in hurt and apprehension.
“Why didn’t you tell me? Are you doing this to trick me? To get
close to me? I’ve heard of people who are born one thing but are
something else... is that you? Wh-“
He gave a sigh and rubbed his temple, collecting his thoughts.
“I couldn’t care less about that kind of thing... I- I love you
Myrrhe. For who you are not what you have beneath your skirts.
What hurts me is that you kept this from me... Why?”

Malachi reeled, a noise of shock escaping him as she so firmly
whacked his hand away from her. His hand hovered there in empty
space for a long moment as the hurt flooded him and settled deep
inside of him. The look in her eyes- Was he that abhorrent to
her that the thought of him being in love with her drive her to
tears? His hand dropped down to his side as he simply stared
dumbly, for once at a loss of words.
She could have just said ‘no thanks’ and left it at that. Why
did she have to have this reaction...?
As she stumbled back and muttered for him to not say that, he
reached a shaky hand out to pull a chair for him to sit on.
“I...”
Words still failed him and he ran a hand through his hair with
an odd laugh. Surely this was a dream- Hadn’t she kissed him
back? Hadn’t she leant into him at the docks on their first
night here? Surely she didn’t mean her rejection! He looked at
her, utter confusion on his face.
“Myrrhe- I- What’s wrong? I thought you... I thought you had
feelings for me. Why didn’t you say anything on the ship? When
we were watching the fireworks? Why...” he shook the thoughts
from his head and moved closer, taking her hands and placing
them on his chest, covered by his own hands.
“Myrrhe, my love. Please... Don’t let this bother you... I love
you the same even though I know... I can’t possibly love anyone
else. So put me out of my misery; Do you love me?”

Malachi felt his knees shake for a moment as she nodded in
confirmation of her love for him, relief pulsed through him and
his chest swelled in awe of her. As she learnt into his hand, he
gave her a gentle look, waiting for her to speak. When she
looked at him and made another pointed comment, hinting at what
he’d realised earlier.
His eyes widened and his face flushed a dark red as he gave her
a sheepish smile, “I uh- I don’t have issue with... what is down
there- I um....” he didn’t know how to word this. He’d never
denied having a wife preference in lover, but to openly admit
one enjoyed both sexes was taboo.
“Let’s just say I’ve enjoyed the company of both men and
women... intimately and have no issue with either sex.
That’s.... that’s not an issue for me”
He gently pulled her to his chest, letting his hand stroke her
hair softly.
“What I love about you doesn’t rely on who you used to be or you
differences. I love you for who you are now and your qualities
you’ve shown me these last few months. Smart, witty and kind...
Any man deterred by such meaningless things doesn’t deserve
you...”

Malachi gave her a gentle and shy smile as she seemed to come to
terms with what he was saying. She stood there so unsure of
herself as she spoke, nothing like that confident lawyer he’d
met back in Phonax, but he was glad to see she had thawed toward
him.
Her gentle ask for forgiveness warmed his heart and gently he
drew her closer in his arms, pressing his forehead to hers
affectionately.
“Of course, my love...” he said gently.
With one smooth action, his hand slid to her cheek and he gently
leaned forward to press a kiss to her lips. His heart thudded in
his chest as he maintained the embrace and could feel her slowly
melting in his arms. His face heated up as his mind quickly went
to other places, but he tried to force this images out even if
his hand slipped just that tad lower on her back.
He pulled back for a moment to take a breath and watch her face
to see how this was making her feel.
