Re: CHPT 0.7: Intrigued (Malachi & Myrrhe) [Y1052-Y1054]

---------------------------------------------------------
The greeting was received about as warmly as a frozen lake. His
mother simply nodded to Myrrhe when she addressed her, while the
grandmother gave her a look that was distant. Of course Eir
remedied that by stepping in and giving Myrrhe a welcoming
expression, trying to not make the woman feel unwelcome. He
loved his family, but they were intense and severe people. His
father had always been the more lively and light one of the
house and he was a former soldier. If that didn’t spell out the
intensity of the Aluanas, he wasn’t sure what did...
Eir’s eyes locked on the woman there, a similar calculation
behind that softer look as she spoke. Lady Myrrhe of House
Faexisys...He didn’t know that name and neither did he see that
name mentioned within his father’s records. She was an outsider,
an unknown, and a lawyer. That meant she was someone well versed
in keeping their intentions secretive. While he trusted Malachi
implicitly, this woman he wasn’t so sure about. Eir’Asa had
learned quite a bit in his years as Lord and much of that had
made him shrewd in business and careful of who he trusted.
Perhaps the situation around his father’s odd death had made him
more aware of the target on his back or how one action could
possibly ruin his family. He was responsible for the welfare of
his family, that of the Aluanas line. He had to give up quite a
bit in his life to be sure that responsibility was met. So, he
was not above keeping a careful eye on this woman to be sure she
was truly there for the right reasons.
“Of course, collaboration is the soul of progress, thuuril. It’s
a pleasure to get this opportunity to collaborate with you, Lady
Faexisys.” He added before the topic switched to a darker topic.
His father…
Eir passed a glance back to his mother and noted her stoney
expression slipped ever so slightly, those golden eyes of her’s
softening to a degree. Even if they were not overly affectionate
with one another, his parents had been partners and friends for
a very long time. While marriage in Glapera was merely a
business affair, the two genuinely cared for the other and
worked to be sure their family and house was a strong one. Eir
never felt a day where he wasn’t loved and wasn’t cared for by
his parents...It was why his father’s loss had been difficult to
manage, even if the expectation was that once the mourning
period was over, he was expected to step up to the plate and
guide the family.
“Thank you, Lord Hythian. I appreciate your understanding and
well wishes for my late husband. You know my heart still is open
in the face of your loss even after all these years…” Lady
Aluanas stated, her head bowing some before she looked to her
mother and gestured for a servant. “We will leave the Lords to
their work, mother. When you are through with your discussion,
please join us for dinner. We have collected a few of your
favorite meals during your stay here.” Fen’Ora gave the
invitation freely in the hopes that it would help these dealings
go well. Malachi was practically family at this point to the
Aluanas, as he had done much to garner their respect in his time
here. He was viewed as practically Glaperan at this point,
something that was not earned easily.
“Vur creol jekip wux Elvi sone. Achthend ihk pluvt.” (And some
swill you Elvi eat. Food for prey.) The grandmother spat, since
Draconians didn’t do well on strictly a vegetarian diet, as it
was viewed as food for the animals they ate. Eir’Asa struggled
not to chuckle at his grandmother being fussy over vegetables,
as he was sure that would earn him a verbal lashing. So he
simply gave Malachi a wink and went into the house with the
others. When they all separated, Eir kept his attention ahead
and let the two speak as he was sure it was some business he
didn’t need to know. Instead he waited for them to be behind the
closed doors of a sitting room before he let out a breath and
eased the tension in him.
“Apologies for my family, Myrrhe. They mean well but they have
the Draconian curse of stoney seriousness and rigidity. I
promise they will be warmer by dinner.” He stated before
gesturing to a few seats there. A servant came in bringing tea
with a lovely set of pastries, something that they had heard
that Elvi enjoyed and no doubt organized by his mother. Eir gave
a small gesture for them to tuck in. “Now without all the
formalities in the way, how are you Mal? I’m sorry my
correspondences have been far and few inbetween. You know how my
mind wanders when there is so much going on.” He asked since he
hadn’t heard from him in a while due to their own
responsibilities.

Malachi gave a small chuckle at Eir's apologies for his family's
stoney and cold behaviour, when he first arrived it had taken
quite a while for anyone to warm up to him at all. In fact, it
was many months before they stopped talking over his head in
Vs'shtak, partially because he quickly grew in ability to
understand him and partially as they grew to trust him more. He
nodded in agreement.
"For folk who breath fire they tend to be cold. I dare say it's
the lack of fibre and vegetables in their diet" he teased
slightly. As they sat down, Malachi made sure to pull out
Myrrhe's chair for her and tuck it in behind her. He was a
little nervous that she might find this all a bit odd or even
uncomfortable. He wanted to assure her that he was right there
and everything was okay. It was okay to be candid in this manner
because the relationship was slightly different to just a normal
business deal.
At the introduction of the sweets and tea, Mal perked up and his
mind went to the first 'date' he'd constructed with Myrrhe in
which he'd served up similar treats. He wondered if she thought
of this as well...
"I admit, my own correspondence has lacked as well Isthasy.
(brother) However, things have been pretty well for me as far as
family goes. You know how it is in the Hythian family" this last
bit was added wryly as Eir knew the nature of the relationships
in their home"
He lifted the teacup and took a sip from it, relaxing a little
further into his chair and giving Mal a cheeky look, "Any
engagements or wives I should know about ion your behalf? Or has
your 'business' distracted you from such frivolities?"
Of course, he knew that Eir was in no way the kind of man to
actively seek a woman or be the one to make advances. It was
more of a cheeky query than serious.
"Ah, but I forget my lovely friend here" he said, smiling at
Myrrhe "The Faexisys family are the main lawyers that assist our
family and this happens to be the eldest and most pretty of
them. Now, do we need anything other than what we brought with
us for business matters?" he asked her.

Eir gave Malachi a roll of his eyes at the vegetable comment, as
he kind of agreed with his grandmother there. While he love
Phonaxian sweets, he was a bit torn on their dishes. It wasn’t
that he couldn’t adapt, he had just been hungry for hours after
trying to stomach a meal of only vegetables. But his family
would endeavor to try again for The Elvi’s sake and had a few
vegetable only options for dinner. Just to be kind to the guest
that came with Malachi mostly. Eir was still unsure of her, but
she didn’t need to know that. So, he gave her warm and friendly
smiles as he and Malachi spoke, trying to include her in the
conversation.
Malachi’s comment about his family though, Eir kept between
them. He felt his face fall, a frown forming some in worry that
his dear friend had suffered some harshness or untoward anger
from his father. His family, although allies of the Aluanas,
were not the nicest to their son and put so much on Malachi’s
shoulders but treated him like a pariah. Eir personally would
only do business with Malachi, as out of the whole lot Eir only
felt Malachi was the sympathetic and kinder one.
He didn’t answer verbally, only nodded to that thought.
However, the cheeky question about engagements and wives made
Eir redden under that gaze. “N-No. None. Not that my family
hasn’t tried. The contracts are just so heavy that it feels like
another job to take on.” He said with a huff, since marriage in
Glapera was common in the nobility but hardly anyone else. And
it wasn’t for the reasons that Malachi probably thought. It was
strictly business and sometimes a partnership. He didn’t think
he could handle more business. Now he had had a pretty face
catch his eye, much like Lea’Vera had in his youth, but the
relations logically wouldn’t work in Eir’s mind. He had much too
much work to tend to or he always felt deep down that something
was missing. He couldn’t give his heart to someone that wasn’t
his match and he would be patient for that.
He was glad when he heard the topic shift to Lady Faexisys. She
seemed quite the listener lately and Eir wondered if it was out
of shyness or out of some darker intent. He glanced over his cup
as she got all flustered watching Malachi, his lip twitching
behind the cup. Oh, so no nefarious plotting...Her mind was
elsewhere, on a particular Elvi man in the room. He was about to
agree and ask how Myrrhe Felt about her business with the
youngest Hythian, to maybe diss out her feelings to Malachi, but
he was cut short by tea going all down her dress.
His brows shot up and there was a moment that he worried she may
have burned herself. When he didn’t see any emotion other than
embarrassment on her face, he calmed and simply reached out a
hand to Malachi a handkerchief from the table there. “Oh dear,
Mal could certainly help Lady Faexisys.” He said, letting the
man tend to the woman of his affections. After all, they clearly
were pining for each other. If Eir could see it, you know it was
obvious. He did summon a servant, speaking lowly to them in
Vs’Shtak for them to bring a change of clothes for her. Surely
she wouldn’t want to sit there in damp clothes and if she didn’t
he would have a change prepared for her. His mother has plenty
of garments from her youth and most would fit a smaller Elvi
woman.

Malachi gave a small noise of surprise as Myrrhe tipped tea all
down the front of herself. Firstly, he was concerned and quickly
took the handkerchief offered by Eir to try and help her. He
dabbed at the patch along her arm to ensure she wasn’t burnt and
then quickly moved to dabbing away at the puddle in her lap. As
he did so, his brow creased a little in confusion and he looked
up at Myrrhe for a second, the rapid action of processing was
reflected in his eyes and his actions ceased. He blinked before
continuing to clean up the rest of the water and sat the
handkerchief aside. It was now soaked with tea and of no use to
anyone.
He cleared his throat awkwardly, “Sorry about that, what were we
saying?”
Whatever the response was, Malachi didn’t quite hear. Was
Myrrhe... a... Did she have a... Was that...
He blinked out of his stupor and looked up at his friend again
with a bashful look as he rubbed the back of his neck.
“I’m sorry, you might have to repeat that again, I wasn’t quite
focused...”

Eir had noticed something odd happen between Myrrhe and Malachi,
but did not speak to what was going on. Instead, he continued to
ask his questions and speak on small things until Malachi was
done. However, it seemed it was all forgotten as Malachi looked
oddly distant and far off. Was he caught up in thoughts of his
lady love there? He smile a bit to himself to see his friend
infatuated and decided to spare him the joking tone. After all,
Lady Myyrhe returned in her dress and seemed ready to talk
business. Fortunate for her, Eir'Asa was not a lord that would
be offended by the rushed nature of her dealing.
"Yes. Lets. Apologies for letting my emotions wander with your
time." He said before taking the document she offered. The group
poured over the document in detail, Myyrhe guiding the talks as
the writer it seemed. It was clear Malachi didn't write this nor
had any part in it. While intelligent, Malachi wasn't a
backhanded sort of man, or so Eir had observed of him during
their time together. This was riddled with very specific
language and obscurities to shield who was getting the better
deal here. Had this been any drake they wandered in to see, they
might have no placed it. But Eir grew up reading and studying
his craft to be sure he was the best Lord of his family. Not to
mention, he was the bookish sort that loved combing through
things like this and would spend hours deciphering ancient texts
and learning all he could.
While it would have offended him had it been any other person
than Malachi, Eir was even kilter enough to see the reason.
Myrrhe was hired to protect Hythian interest and in a situation
where foreign powers were involved, deals with trade and product
would always hang in the balance of national issues. Let's say
Glapera declared war on Phonax or Phonax closed its borders to
Glapera, both families would be out of a lot of money and one
had to take a heavier brunt to make sure one at least survived
the aftermath. While he should have been leery of this, this was
Malachi...His brother. Should something ill fall upon both their
houses Eir was sure Malachi would extend the same protection and
care that Eir would in a heart beat. Perhaps that lowered his
guard.
Eir heard what she wished from the trade agreement and what
stipulations and rules before he combed over it again with
critical eyes. After a moment, he folded his hands and looked at
Myrrhe was a more resolved stare. It wasn't as warm as the one
he gave Malachi, but it was still his usual friendly appearance.
"You drive a hard bargain, Lady Faeixsys. I'm inclined to
believe that if I sign this my family will see some return, and
we will no doubt improve relations with the Hythians by allowing
them a higher return on the profits from this venture and
allowing them far more security should the deal fail." He
stated, making it clear to her that the wool was not pulled over
his eyes and he was impressed with her trying. "But, it is my
implicit trust in Malachi that makes me willing to entertain
this, as I'm sure his successes in business shall be our
successes with continued partnership." He said before tilting
his head slightly. "Tell me, what is the coverage for the
Aluanas should this deal fail? Barring us leaving the agreement
willingly and therefore paying a penalty to the offended party,
as is expected, what security does this deal offer us if the
Hythians cannot uphold their part of the bargain?"

The contract, from what Malachi could understand, was simple.
The Hythian Trade Company would use Aluanas ships to transport
their cargo. This would benefit the Hythians because it bypassed
a lot of troublesome formalities at the seaboarders and allowed
for feee passage to the shores and less tax on traded goods.
This was beneficial to the Aluanas family because it meant that
trade would be more frequent and supply would match demand for
imported goods. The Hythians also offered lowered prices on the
bigger exports such as textiles, building materials not local to
Glapera such as marble as well as lifestock. It seemed a pretty
even bargain at this point, though it would make the Hythian’s
lives simpler more than anyone else.
He mostly remained quiet as he listened to Myrrhe speak,
enjoying her-hi-her voice as she so efficiently went through it.
It was clear she was confident at this and knew what was going
on. Though, with a glance to Eir he could tell that the man also
had a firm grasp on the situation. His critical and analytical
questions of what was to keep the Aluanas safe in the deal made
him lean forward in his chair.
“I-If we can’t uphold our end of the bargain, we shall repay all
of the trade tax owed and what it would have cost to hire or
lease your ships as such. I dare say we would also pay what
would have been owed in docking fees as well. For the entirety
of the time we used this trade deal.”
He looked to Myrrhe in slight concern, unsure if such a thing
was possible.

Eir'Asa listened to the pair and their reassurances. Eir wasn't
one for fancifal arguements nor flattery as he was never the
type to think much of it. Partially because of his Draconian
heritage and partially because he was a less social creature. A
true introvert that preferred his books to matters of
businessthat involved socialization, like negotiation. However,
Malachi was a dear friend and this woman, Myrrhe, appeared to be
someone important to him. Therefore, Eir's guard was down and he
was ready to listen to their offer. And luckily for them, it was
a god one. Such an insurance policy was helpful and would
persuade his family that this agreement was safe. They needed
allies in the wider world as Glapera had a history of making
more enemies than friends, including with their neighbor Phonax.
So a secure offer between two allied families was a benefit to
the Aluanas and Hythians. They would work hard to keep this
agreement alive and it would make little sense for them to
swindle each other.
Eir gave the pair a grin, his cheerful demeanor rising with the
promise of a new deal. "I believe those are fair terms that the
Aluanas could agree to. Lord Hythian, Lady Faexisys,
congragulations. I believe we have a deal." He took the quill
from the table, pricking his finger with it before signing the
line. He then healed the deep cut, as it was customary for all
oaths and agreements in business in Glapera to be signed in
blood. It made you remember and honor the promises you made,
epecially towards those you trusted.

Malachi lit up as Eir decided that the contract was on good
enough terms for him to agree. With enthusiasm, he followed suit
and signed the agreement with blood, using a handkerchief to
stem the small amount of blood that followed. The Elvi male
smiled brightly at his friend and gave a nod to Myrrhe.
“A pleasure doing business with all of you!” he reached forward
and drank from his tea that sat on the table. Now that his mouth
was shut his mind wandered back to the small incident that had
precursored this deal.
He knew what he had felt and... he wasn’t sure how to feel.
There was anger at the thought that this might be a man trying
to trick him, but on the other hand he had heard of a small
group of people who... felt trapped in their own body. That the
physical didn’t match what their soul was. For Myrrhe to present
herself as a woman not only in front of Malachi but in front of
her family led him to believe it wasn’t an act. Did that seem to
effect how he felt about her? He didn’t think so; even as he
looked at her now his heart gave a throb at how beautiful she
looked in Draconian fashion.
He cleared his throat and set down his tea to look at Eir, he
could worry about that later...
“So Brother, what has been occupying your mind so much you have
been so neglectful in our communications? Besides the family
issues... Has business been well?” he asked. When Mal had to
leave for his brothers death, Eir had been learning the tricky
business of his fathers company.

Eir noted that something was off between the two. While he
couldn’t put his finger on what exactly was wrong, he knew that
whatever it was was a bother to both. He let Lady Faexysis
leave, figuring she perhaps wouldn’t stay then for dinner? Had
something happened after her accident with the tea. “Of course,
Lady Faexisys. I hope you enjoy the rest of your evening.” Eir
then passed a gentle look at Malachi, his brow furrowing
slightly at the question. He waited for her to leave before a
breath left him.
“Well, business is booming. The Aluanas control most the ships
in that port you entered, but not for lack of trying. My uncle
has been arguing that I am too lenient on foreigners and
therefore going to run our business into the ground. Can you
believe I told him to shove it at a family dinner?” He gave a
small chuckle before giving a remorseful look. “I’ve missed
having you here. I honestly can’t thank you enough for all you
did to help me as a younger drake. I only pray that this gives
us an excuse to communicate more.” He gave Malachi a tilt of his
head, a gesture to the door.
“However, now I don’t think is the time to extend that
communication. I believe had this been a woman I was wooing, you
would have told me to follow her, by now. She’s quite charming
Mal, don’t let her slip away.” He told his brother, knowing by
the look on Malachi’s face that he bothered by something and
needed to make it right with Myrrhe...

Mal gave a playful motion of mock shock and horror as Eir leant
in to tell him that he’d spoken to his father so brashly.
“Eir’Asa! Colour me surprised!” he gave a chuckle and his smile
softened as Eir thanked him for their time together as youth.
“I’ve missed being here- you can see I’ve lost my tan. And I
will forever be thankful for you and how you showed me what real
family are meant to be like. You taught me how not to be the
loneliest man in the room even though I was often surrounded
with people. I will be sure to resume our communications, as I
know realise how much I miss your company”
He gave Eir a rueful look as he gave the Elvi ‘womaniser’ his
advice. What had the work come to that Eir was now pushing him
towards a girl!? Though as he mentioned it, Malachi’s mind went
back to the earlier incident. He and Myrrhe needed to have a
conversation...
With a clap to his companions shoulder he stood up.
“Indeed, I shall follow your advice and go after... them. I bid
you goodnight Eir”
With that he hurried off to his room to remove his stuffy coat.
It gave him a moment to think. Surely she didn’t lie to him in
order to gain his trust? He had pursued her- or him or- It hurt
Malachi’s head to think about how it was all meant to work but
he would just be straight forward. He gave a firm knock on
Myrrhe’s door.
“It’s me, Mal. Can we talk?”
