Malachi perked up at the idea of heading to the festival
celebrations at the dock. He’d yet to attend any kind of
cultural event and was eager to experience it all. He gave Mal a
playful swat with the philosophy book and nodded excitedly.
“Now that’s what we like to hear! Sounds like a solid plan if
       you ask me”
The cocky Elvi was glad to see that his friend was gaining a
more relaxed outlook on things and was growing in confidence.
While Eir had been learning to be more explorative and lax, Mal
had been learning the intricasies of another culture. Despite
the loaning and groaning about the work he had to do, Mal took
keen interest in learning about Glapera and wondered that
perhaps he was meant to be an ambassador. It would work in his
favour that he was so silver tongued and had a way with people.
Maybe he could be of use to his family?
However, all that occupied Mal’s thoughts now was of this
       festival...
The docks bustled with life and movement as they filled with
various performers and artists in the streets. Contortionists
knotted themselves up in the most puzzling fashion, dancers wove
their way through hypnotic rhythms and artists set up easels in
the streets to paint. Such rich and interesting works could be
seen wherever the eye could wander. Not only did it serve to
celebrate art, but the festival provided an opportunity for
artists to earn money for their craft. Mal and Eir walked side
by side and commented on various pieces in administration, both
of them generously tipping performers who delighted them with
       tricks and skill.
They passed a particular stall that seemed small. There was a
man sitting there, doing drawings of passers by and offering to
paint a portrait of whoever sat there for them to buy.
[i]”Young men! Would you care to have your portrait
       painted?”[/i{
       ]
Mal, who was getting better at translating perked up when he
could mostly understand. He gave a nod and tugged Eir over
       excitedly.
       “Yes- Let’s do it!”
Mal handed the man a coin and sat on a stool as Eir sat beside
him. They were instructed to remain still for a moment and watch
as he sketches. However, the last thing Malachi saw before being
knocked over the head was the dark cloth of a bag going over his
       head.
When he woke once more, he was still in the same clothes but
tied with his back to a pole. His head throbbed with a migraine,
all of which speed from one moment in time. Panic raced through
his as he feared for his friend.
“Eir are you- Oh thank the stars...”
While Eir was also tied up, at least Malachi knew he wasn’t dead

Eir awoke with a groan, his head pounding and eyes having
trouble focusing in the low light. He winced at the pain,
knowing whoever or whatever knocked him out must have been
potent. It was the only reason he figured they got him without
him changing. Not that it would do him much good. He struggled
futilely against the rope and recognized it was chorded with
some metal, something he couldn’t break by just shifting. Maybe
with a concentrated flame breath but at the expense of burning
himself badly. He gave a huff and leaned his head back against
the pole, trying to remember what happened. They had been at the
festival and then...Nothing. He felt himself get hit and jabbed
with something that knocked him clean out. He was sure that’s
what made him still groggy and tense at the moment.
But who would want to tie him up? Surely Eir wasn’t worth much.
Certainly not as much as—“M-Mal?” He asked in some panic, his
voice catching when Malachi spoke up. Oh thank Lothtor he was
alive and okay. Well, not okay—They were captured currently in
an unknown location tied to a pole. Eir fidgeted against the
bonds before trying to glance at Malachi as best he could.
“Where the hell are we? I don’t remember who took us...” He
muttered, trying to fidget his tied legs on the dirt floor. The
only other thing he noticed was they were in a wood paneled
room, seemingly a shed or a storage room? It was hard to tell
when the only light was an oil lantern hanging on the pole.
“Do you see anything on your side? Any doors?” Eir asked as he
tried to survey what he still had on his person. No daggers, no
money, just his clothing. He was sure it was the same for
       Malachi.

Mal blinked to try and clear some of his hazy eyesight. Whatever
had knocked him out had been solid enough that it busted the
skin of his head. Even now he could feel where blood had dried
along his hairline and at the edge of his forehead. Eir and he
looked about, the bonds preventing them from wriggling about too
much. It was a kind of wire that wound around them both- he
could tell because when Eir shifted, it tightened around him.
“Doors..?” he muttered, partially to himself as he looked about.
“To my left- you’re right -there is a door and a window opposite
me. It’s big enough to fit through but it wouldn’t be a quick
       escape-“
His words were cut short as the afore mentioned door slammed
open to reveal three people. One was a man, dressed plain but
neatly. The two behind followed nervously as the one that
appeared to be the leader appraised them. The man had a rough
ginger beard and short cut ginger hair. He seemed to asses the
two lads in front of him with no emotion.
“They look pretty damn ordinary to me. I already told you we
have enough male slaves, Sorroca was full of easy takings. Why
do we need these two?” he said roughly in the harsh Drake
       tongue.
“We have knowledge that these two could actually be worth a
pretty penny” one said, trying to hide what was obvious
       excitement.
“Yeah, we have a reliable source-“the other chimed in quickly,
       to dissuade the man’s temper.
“Who are they?” he said, more placid but still not moving his
       eyes from the pair.
“The Lord Aluanas and an Elvi lord here visiting from Phonax”the
excited one said, fiddling with his belt. Mal now recognised him
as the ‘sketch artist’ from the festival.
The leader seemed to think for a minute, watching them both.
“Send word to the Aluanas household. I want 25,000 gold for
them. Only 15,000 gold for their bodies- Which is all they’ll be
able to have if they don’t retrieve them by sundown tomorrow. I
want the ship to be off shore by high noon” he said wearily, not
       conveying much interest.
With that they all left, Malachi briefly catching one of the
words in Vs’Shtak that the man had said.
“Driik?” he muttered to himself, trying to search him memory.
All at once it dawned on him. The slight rocking and tilting of
the room was not his own dizziness, but the sway of a ship.
“I think we’re on a boat Eir...” he said “What did they say?” he
       asked hurriedly.

Eir swallowed hard when he heard that there was a door and a
window. Okay...Okay they could make it out that way. He just had
to figure out how to get out of this cording. He didn't have
time to really think when a man forced the door open. The status
of his clothes made Eir's golden eyes narrow at him, trying to
take in as many details as necessary in the low light. Red hair,
a beard, human perhaps? The men behind him were perhaps
Draconian as that would be the only reason this man would speak
Vs'Shtak. Eir was forced to hone in on what they were saying,
even if it made his blood run cold. Oh shit...these men were
slavers and they were going to put them up for ransom.
The ammount they were asking made Eir was to vomit. That was so
much gold, more than he had touched in a life time. He knew his
family had that kind of money perhaps, but most of it was tied
up in investments. He really didn't want to think about it, as
he didn't want to ruminate on the fact that they would be dead
if his parents couldn't figure out the sum.
As they left, Eir felt his body tremble with effort to stay
calm. Lothtor, they were trapped and with men that saw no
greater value in them than a nuisance. What's worse, they were
on a boat that was soon to set sail. Malachi's question only
served to make him more nervous, something he was sure Malachi
       could hear in his voice.
       "So...They are slavers...We're on a boat...and they want money
for us. They know who we are." He was being sure to leave out
the threat of death, since he was just as terrified at the
moment and didn't want Malachi panicking. He sounded disoriented
and injured. He didn't need more on his plate.
With that new motivation looming in the near future, he began
working at the cord. He tried pulling against it, but realized
he was harming Malachi when he tried to shift by a noise he
gave. Eir stopped, not wishing to crush or break Malachi's back
by being reckless. "We should try to get out of here on our own.
I don't think my family would even know where to look or direct
the guard. I can't shift because I'll crush you with this cord.
I could try melting it but that could take hours and we'd surely
be badly burned as wel.." He was floundering, trying to figure
out what to do to get them out of this safely before it was too
       late.

Malachi cursed with a very colourful string of Ithyril and
gritted his teeth. Slavers? Of all the places to be held hostage
it had to be 50000 leagues away from his family. Tsk, if they
cared to pay the ransom it would never reach them in time. He
looked down at the thick wire, giving a noise of pain as Eir
tried to wriggle out. It was clear that the chord would not be
breakable, as Eir had reasoned. So what could they do? Mal
focused his attention on their surroundings. He noted that
someone had been eating a kind of stone fruit, a knife on the
table beside a platter of peels and seeds. If he could reach it-
He stretched out a foot, trying to grab the leg of the table
with the toe of his shoe. He tugged a few moments before Eir’s
frustrated and pained groans caused him to stop. Mal panted a
       little, thinking.
“What if we both pull at the same time? Okay- Ready? Go!”
The two lads pulled as hard as they could in the opposite
directions, but all it achieved was to waste energy and cause
the wire to painfully bite into their skin. When they collapsed
back against the pole, Mals head struck the wood and he saw
sparks. He was about to make a smart comment about not trying
that again when the door burst open.
“What the hell is going on here? It’s stupid to try and escape,
you have nowhere to run. Just wait your time until mummy and
daddy come to pay us our money-“
The crew member’s words were interrupted when Malachi spat at
him, the fluid landing on the mans shoe as he glared up and spat
       the only insult he knew.
       “Shuiblith ehaism!” (Sh*t face)
What a time to have accurate pronunciation he thought before he
could cry out in pain. The crew member gave three solid kicks
the the Elvi’s ribs before stopping. He laughed at the males
groans and delighted in the way the Drake lord flinched as he
feigned to kick him. He glared at Malachi once more, “Know your
       place filthy inbreed scum-“
Mal huffed as he propped himself up against the pole once more,
       catching Eirs look of concern.
“S’nothing. My brother has inflicted worse... Got any ideas on
       how to escape?”

Eir gave a grunt of pain with all of Malachi’s struggling and
tried to stay positive as his own eyes darted around for
something to get them out of this. They weren’t sure of how many
people were on this ship, nor how armed they were. If they could
just get the bindings off, Eir could shift and they could at
least get off this ship. Surely if they could get off the boat,
they could survive long enough to find a port authority or
       guard.
Malachi’s suggestion wouldn’t work, but Eir was willing to try
it. Maybe they could at least get it to budge? Well it didn’t
and it only served to injure them and make Eir winded. He would
have made a comment but the sound of the door bursting open and
an oafish fellow coming in cut him off. He tried to Crain his
head to see what the man was doing to Malachi. Whatever Mal had
done had pissed the man off so badly that he began kicking him.
Eir would have to heal those bruises, but for now they needed to
just survive. He cowered at the man trying to scare him, though
his eyes briefly burned with that Draconian pride. If he got his
opportunity, he was going to make that jack ass pay for harming
       Malachi.
Eir gave Malachi a worried look but the Elvi made him ease. Eir
kept fussing with the ropes before he then paused and looked at
the pole then Malachi. “Mal...I think I have an idea.” He leaned
against the pole some, drawing his legs towards him. “Quick,
let’s help each other stand up. Pull taughT and shuffle up.” The
pair used each other to get to their feet and soon, they could
even feel a bit of looseness in the cording. “Remember, quiet. I
think there is some give, I’ll hold some of your side and we can
help each other shuffle out.” They pulled it all down and
eventually were able to officially stand on their own and get
free of the ropes. “Okay..okay now what do we do? We can’t go
through the door without a plan. I’m sure that ass hat is still
out there.” He said since it would be hard to hide themselves
and Eir wasn’t the most stealth.

Mal huffed and continued to try and suck air into his winded
lungs as Eir declared he had an idea. It was brilliant-
something Mal would have never of thought of. They wriggles to
their feet and the cord all but fell at their ankles. He grabbed
his friend in a quick embrace of relief and excitement, thumping
       his back once.
“You’re a genius man- You really are-“
Then the thinker brought up another problem; their actual plan
of escape. It was one thing to be free of bindings but they were
on a ship which only had the exit of the gangplank or into the
ocean and Mal wasn’t a fan of getting wet but if they had to-
He spotted their things in the corner and moved to strap his
sword belt to his waist once more. There was an ornate Glaperan
blade mounted on the wall. Sterling silver with gold fillagry on
the handle. Swiping it from the mount be gave it to Eir.
“Well, whatever we do at least we’re armed”
Mal frowned and his ears pricked up at little as there were
sounds of confusion from outside. Then the confusion turned to
panic and as Mal went to turn the handle, there was an explosion
and the boat rocked with some kind of force. The door slammed
open to reveal a figure, mostly hidden in the ceremonial face
coverings women usually wore but Mal knew from the eyes that it
       was their friend Lae’Vera.
“Hurry! They won’t be distracted long-“ the boat rocked with
another explosion and Lae gave a grunt as she pulled a smoking
bundle from nowhere and tossed it into the small crowd of people
trying to put out the fire. The bundle almost immediately
exploded though they were given no room to watch as Lae shoved
them toward the gang plank. Mal didn’t need to be prompted as he
hurried after her, casting looks over his shoulder at the crew
       now after them.
“Go!” she shouted, pointing to the plank. Mal and Eir could run
past onto the dock but as Lae reached the dock she gave a grunt
of effort and lifted the plank, sending it knocking into crew
members who know couldn’t reach them.

The success of the plan brought more relief to Eir than he had
felt in a very long time. He wanted to cheer with joy, hell sob
with relief at all this, but stopped himself for the sake of
keeping his sh*t together and keeping quiet. They needed to be
thinking of their escape, not losing their commitment now. The
hug from Malachi was appreicated however and made Eir feel the
slightest bit of relief to the nervous energy in him. Right, he
had his friend there to help. He wasn't alone and Mal wouldn't
leave him alone. They could do this together.
When Malachi passed him a sword and started talking about
fighting their way out, Eir almost gave a quick shake of his
head. They couldn't do this, they couldn't rightly fight their
way out of ship with slavers. They didn't even know how many
opponents they would have to face. "Malachi, perhaps I should--"
He was about to say he should shift and cause some distraction
when suddenly Malachi seemed distracted by something. He looked
in the direction that Malachi's ear twitch in time to hear and
explosion and feel the boat shudder under the shock wave. What
the hell was going on out there? Was the boat under attack? When
footsteps approached, Eir drew his sword, glowing yellow eyes
narrowing at the door in the low light. However, there stood a
strange woman in a ceremonial mask. He lowered the sword in his
suprise, not budging until people started shouting. The voice
instantly struck him as familiar and feminine. Was that
       Lea'Vera?
Eir scrambled to follow after Malachi, watching in shock as the
young woman hurtled home made bombs at the deck. The fire
wooshed at their backs and sent the boys quickly on her heels.
They let her handle the gang plank, running as fast as they
could to get away from the docks. There was no sense in stopping
nearby, else any of the slavers not on the ship would catch
them. When they made it a safe distance and Lea'Vera was able to
catch up, Eir leaned his back against the wall, huffing and
puffing in air as fast as he could. "That was....Very lucky." He
said as he gave another gulp of air. His eyes slide to the drake
female, his brow knitting at the sight of her. "Lothtor am I
glad to see you, Lea.." He told her before shaking his head.
"Sheer luck that you found us. I thought we were gonners." He
admitted, as if not even questioning why she was there or knew
where to find them. While a part of him was curious. A larger
part was worried what she would say...

Mal nodded along with Eir’s thanks as Lae’Vera led them further
away from the ship and danger. She pulled the mask down from
around her mouth and Mal could see she was worrying her lip
between her teeth. The thanks seemed to make her more
uncomfortable and she glanced to make sure no one was following
before she paused in the shade of a house.
“I.... I have an apology to make. I- I lied partially about my
father” she wrung her hands and her eyes couldn’t meet theirs.
“Really he’s involved in more underground trade ship dealings-
they hold his debt over his head like a candy for a child and he
does whatever they say in the hopes one day he can earn back his
       losses”
She rubbed her face a little, smearing the soot across her cheek
as she swallowed nervously, “A-And when I came home later than
usual the other night... he managed to get the information of
who I was with out of me and... he must have set up that
       situation himself-“
Tears sprang to her eyes and she moved to pull Eir’s hands into
her own, looking at him pleadingly, “I’m and most deeply sorry.
I hope you can forgive me one day”
Mal looked a little irritated and thought of the beating he’d
       copped.
However, it much of a response was allowed when the sound of a
group of horse riders approached. She slipped her mask back on
and looked over in fear before scurrying off and out of sight.
It was Sor Aluanas and his wife alongside a dozen or more of
their private guards. This would be hard to explain...

**Just a note anything italicized is Vsh’tak**
As Eir caught his breath, he noted a strange unease coming
across Lea'Vera's face. The normally confident woman seemed
uneasy and standoffish. It worried Eir, a normally calm man who
had come to trust this woman as a friend. But seeing her this
bothered made him wonder if perhaps she had something to hide.
       Surely she didn’t…
That thought was confirmed by a tremble in her voice, a sign
that she was ready to reveal some heavier news. He frowned when
she said that her father wasn’t exactly who she said he was,
that he was actually a man that worked in the illegal trade
going on in ships. Sadly, something that was in direct
opposition to his family’s dealings. They shunned the idea of
illegality, even if it might make their lives and business so
much easier. His father always said crime only begot crime and
cutting corners only sought to harm and subvert those in place
       to keep things fair.
However, he heard her mention that her father was in debt to
these people...That made things slightly better...Even if
betrayal was betrayal in their society, Eir was raised to have a
bit more understanding. It seemed like they were caught in a
difficult place and that this was all a ploy to help him. While
it wasn’t positive still, he could somewhat understand. But to
hear that she was a part of the reason they were kidnapped and
held against their will was a bit off for him…
He wasn’t sure how to feel about that...While he was sure she
was forced to tell her father what happened and who Eir and
Malachi were, he felt his stomach drop his toes at the news that
she may have helped in planning their capture. Was she telling
them the truth or was she covering her involvement? Did she only
spend time with them to eventually lead them to a trap? Was Lea
       that kind of person?
It caused a pain rise in his chest, one that increased as she
took his hands and began to tear up. He didn’t want to feel this
betrayal, he didn’t want to feel unsure since she saved them.
But he couldn’t help his suspicion and uncertainty about her
actions. Even if he still felt his attraction and care for the
woman, he couldn’t shake those feelings. “Lea I--” He began but
the sounds of approaching horses made his head turn in that
direction. When her hand slipped from his, he went to follow her
hand reaching for her’s to catch it. But she was faster, gone in
a blink and leaving the men to handle his family.
Eir knew this wasn’t going to be pretty, but stepped up to speak
with the group. He knew by the look on his father’s face that
this was going to be a verbal lashing. His father wasted no time
sliding off his horse, the hulking and scarred Draconian male
towering over his young son due to age and military training.
However, he first helped his wife from her horse, which allowed
the woman to rush forward to her son. She enveloped Eir’Asa in a
tight hug, the first sign of emotion leaking into the usually
       stone faced woman.
“My dear one! You are safe! How did you escape?” His mother
said in his ear, tears in her voice as they held each other
       tightly.
“We are safe, mother. Malachi’s quick thinking saved us...” He
reassured her before releasing her so she could go check on
Malachi, who was leaning a bit due to his injury. She placed
hands on him, her hands glowing as she searched him for internal
       injury.
“I’m so relieved you’re okay. Come. Sit so I can get a look at
your side, dantheir.” Fen’Ora stated, giving Malachi a gentle
look that he hadn’t seen before. It was clear the woman was
worried and her worry translated into caring. However, his
father, Aharon'Jae, obviously translated his fear and worry into
       aggression.
“Dantheir, what were you thinking? I trusted you to protect him.
You run off with someone under our care and put him in danger.
That is foolish. I’m angry that you would do something this
stupid!” He stated, his tone rising as he got closer to Eir.
They were almost nose to nose at this point. Eir cowered, his
mouth struggling to put things together as his father spoke in a
harsh and domineering tone. He found his will to speak, even if
       it was shaky and meek.
““Father, We were just out enjoying the festival. It was safe.
We just happened to find the few people that were not safe. It
was a mistake...” He stammered out, but that only made his
father bristle further. All watching would note that scales were
showing on the men, their eyes more reptilian and their voices
becoming rougher and far less human.
““A mistake?! Eir, you two were captured by slavers! I’ve had
soldiers killed by men like that and let me tell you it isn’t
pretty. Don’t you know what could have happened? You could have
gotten Malachi killed, yourself killed! How could you be this
irresponsible?! How can I trust you to run our business if you
can’t even be responsible enough to take care of our guest.” He
stated, with a thunderous tone that would make most quake at it.
Eir winced but felt his panic rising. His father had never been
this angry with him before. How could he question Eir’s ability
to lead based on one mistake? “You had your mother and I worried
sick! I’ve been patient with you and your quirks, but when they
negatively threaten all our family has built--I thought I taught
you better and yet you spit in the face of all we have tried to
do. Even if you are a foolish boy, you have never been this
defiant and reckless!” He snarled, hitting Eir where it hurt.
He now knew his father’s doubt and his distrust that Eir could
lead this family properly. This had apparently pushed his father
to the edge and to an honest place that Eir had never hear
before. Was...Was his father actually insinuating that Eir
wasn’t able to be his heir?
Eir noted that Aharon’s eyes flicked from Malachi and then to
Eir’Asa a few times. Oh, that wasn’t good... “Is Malachi to
blame? Did he talk you into this?” The question stirred a
strange feeling in Eir, one that was already roused into action
due to his father’s words from before and now his insult toward
       Malachi.
“Father! Malachi protected us and worked with me to escape.
Without him I would have been dead. Do not blame him for my
decisions. Not when I made a bad call. I was just tired of being
treated like a prisoner in my own home. I’m allowed to live!” He
spat back, his tone shifting into something more aggressive. The
men glared each other down, the tension clear between them and
       permeating the space.
