Re: CHPT 0.11 Brothers (Malachi & Eir'Asa)

He looked at Eir, trying to see his intention behind his comment
about missing his brother. There was no jest in his expression
and he genuinely seemed to have pity or empathy for him. The
corner of his mouth twitched just a little and he had to try not
to frown at the question.
“Well, one could just say our family is... complex. Recently my
brother and I haven’t been getting along” Recently for elvi
standards was probably a few years. “Sometime I feel as though
it’s better when he’s away... he probably thinks the same of me”
Snapping out of that more melancholy topic, he listened to Eirs
knowledge of the place with interest and looked at him with a
raised brow.
“You’ve never been in there before?” he asked curiously. There
were similar places in Phonax, though any he’d been to were of a
more upper class nature than the ones you’d find in poorer
areas. He often frequented taverns, occasionally the betting
house but nothing more risqué or daring than that. If anyone
spotted the Lord Hythian there, he was sure his parents would
hear about it.
“We have similar places where I am from, though I admit, any
I’ve come across are usually of ‘higher standard’ if you catch
my meaning. After all they’re in the more wealthy areas of
Phonax, but rarely is there much activity in them during the
day...”
He stood there a little, watching the street while an idea
brewed in his head.
“If you haven’t seen inside one before, aren’t you curious? We
could take a look” his eyes glanced back at the servant ruefully
“And hey, if we get in trouble you can just blame me. After all,
knowing which places are not so good to be in is confusing for a
foreigner”
The idea excited him and he looked to Eir eagerly for his reply.

---------------------------------------------------------
Eir was thrown off by him saying his family was complex. Did
that mean he didn't enjoy his family? Eir was very close with
his immediate family as his mother liked to keep him close and
his father was never anything less than supportive. His
grandmother could be a little harsh, but she was never violent
or derogatory towards Eir. They all were a close unit since they
all carried the Aluanas blood and were all quite kind to each
other. But Malachi's family sounded more distant than Eir's. In
fact, Malachi mentioned that his brother and him fought and that
Malachi even felt it was better he was away. That made Eir's
face fall, slightly in remorse for sticking his nose in
something that obviously was troubling for Malachi.
There was no way Malachi enjoyed the distance between him and
his brother emotionally. A family bond was something important
that should be maintained, not lost. He mourned that his friend
didn't have that connection and he really did pray to the gods
that he one day found that connection again. "I'm sorry, Mal. I
didn't realize that. Let's speak on other matters." He said
gently, glad that the topic was moving toward something else.
Even if that something else was the tavern.
Eir gave Malachi a look that spelled 'Really?' when he repeated
the fact that Eir hadn't been in a bar. "Mal, I can't flirt my
way out of sack and my hobbies involve reading tomes older than
my grandmother. Let's be honest, this is the closest I've even
been to this area." Eir said in good humor, his sarcasm coming
through as he was more comfortable with the Elvi man now. He may
have been shy by nature but he had his mother's sharp tongue
when he cared to comment. Luckily, he was more even kilter and a
people pleaser like his father so usually his bite was reserved
for people that pissed him off or his dry humor.
Eir's brows furrowed when Malachi stated that he went in places
like this before and that Phonax had nicer ones. He wasn't all
that surprised since hobbies like that were usually viewed as
lower, baser things to Draconians. Their pride was everything
after all so gambling and sex work was done under the table.
Those with money were allowed to indulge behind closed doors.
When Malachi asked if he was curious about seeing inside, Eir
gave a unsure look at the doors. He wasn't sure he should...as
he didn't want Malachi to get in trouble because of him. But Eir
had always been a bit curious. "I mean I am. I've played games
before with father and the other men in the family. My uncle
frequents gambling houses and offered to take me along but my
father forbade it. What could looking hurt?" He said with a bit
of nervousness before he glanced himself at the servant. The
woman instantly tensed and eyed the pair suspiciously before her
eyes widened in realization.
"Tenovi ti! dout Dask geou molik udoka shio takh sjek yth
gethrisj persvek mobi, sia-ith." She scolded and Eir went rigid
at the harsh tone. This was not the best idea to do with company
and he had to diffuse the situation. He put on a smile and gave
Malachi a look that spelled to follow his lead.
"Jaci jahus filki drekim diwhafup. Coi jahus ti vis. Ocuir?" He
chuckled in an awkward, lightly elbowing Malachi to get him to
laugh too. "Zyak ifpesp doutan." He paused watching the servant
still looked unconvinced but left it alone and simply ushered
the boys away from the rowdy area.
"We're lucky she doesn't speak Duthl." Eir said in a pleasant
tone to cover up what they were saying. "If we're going to go,
we will have to wait till we're alone. Perhaps at night? As long
as we're careful and don't do anything dangerous of course." He
offered, his tone still bright and excited.
They were being ushered back to the house to wash up and prepare
for dinner, hence why Eir was following along compliantly. His
father no doubt would want to discuss how the day went and make
light conversation until they all had to retire for bed. Then
Eir could slip out to see Malachi and they could work out how to
actually get off the property without being noticed...
Translation:
Servant: "Absolutely not! Your Mother will skin us all alive if
we go in there, my lord."
Eir: "He was just being funny. It was not true. See?" "So calm
yourself."

Mal got an inkling of excitement as he watched Eir, who at this
point didn’t seem opposed to the idea of going in- even if
it was just for a look. Sure he’d seen places that served
the same purpose back at home, but he wondered how different the
card games were, perhaps there were differing things on offer?
Either way, he was glad that Eir didn’t flat out reject
any possibility of them doing so-
Malachi blinked in surprise as the harsh Draconian tongue grazed
his ears, making him turn to see what the matter was. It was the
servant that had been sent with them to make sure they
didn’t get into any trouble. Her words and posture read a
firmness and scolding tone, but her eyes read with a tremble of
concern. Eir seemed to be trying to defuse the situation,
laughing it off. He caught Eirs conspiratorial glance and
quirked a brow before filling his lead. Though he could not
understand what was being said, when Eir laughed and gave him a
nudge he followed suit. It would seem that their plans were
indeed being foiled before they even began. How dreary...
Though, as they began to head back from where they came, hurried
along by the servant, his grin broke out once more as Eir began
again.
“Of course it won’t be dangerous. We’ll just
be there to... observe, gain knowledge perhaps even see
something new” Malachi’s impish excitement has been
revived and the urge to hurry back was great. Managing to keep
his usual calm and cool ease, they went through the motions of
the evening; speaking of what they had been up to, Mal making
little anecdotes on what he observed and the two of them
expressing the plans to perhaps go to the beach.
When dinner had finished, and they were excused, Mal made sure
to mention that he was quite tired from all that had happened
today and was promptly going to bed to sleep like a log- to
which no one questioned or objected.
Mal ‘retired’ and put out the candles in his room.
With silent movements, he got changed into a more practical set
of clothes; plain white shirt, trousers and a dark, heavy cloak
for anonymity. He may or may not have done this a few times and
his mind drifted to their escape plan while his hands secured
his rapier to his hip with expert silence. Not even his coin
purse made a clink as he moved to the window. Peering out, he
noted that the trellis extended quite a bit along the wall, the
vines gently whispering in the evening breeze. By Mal’s
guess, he was pretty sure that it went far enough to at least
reach the bathroom window of Eir’s quarters. So, with deft
movements he swung out the window, closing it behind him before
monkeying his way across the trellis. Reaching the window, he
peered in. Indeed, it was Eirs bathroom- Malachi’s hands
went to tug up the window but he found it locked.
“Damn-“ he muttered to himself with a click of the
tongue.
With a tense breath and the hope that Eir- and only Eir could
hear -he rapped at the glass quietly with his knuckles as he
remained crouched on the windowsill. Lucky the moon was not full
tonight, and the clouds cast shadows over his not so
inconspicuous figure on the outside of the house.
“C’mon Eir-“ he muttered, giving the window
another rap.

Re: CHPT 0.11 Brothers (Malachi & Eir'Asa)

---------------------------------------------------------
Eir had felt a bit guilty at dinner and he was fairly quiet as
Malachi did most of the talking. Surely sneaking out and going
to some seedy tavern was bad. There was no way this wasn't
dangerous or stupid in some way. His parents would be so
disappointed in him if he did anything in poor taste or made a
mockery of the Aluanas name...But Malachi had promised they
wouldn't do anything dangerous and were just there to observe.
This would be more like research than active participation. That
was allowed right? Eir was supposed to learn how to handle
himself and how to be a better businessman before he could be
trusted to make deals for the family. Therefore, this was a life
experience he needed. Also, it was a chance to do something new
and exciting for him...something the young drake didn't get
often.
After dinner, he gave his parents soft goodnight's before he
scurried off to get ready. He put on the lowest quality and
darkest clothing he owned, looking slightly less wealthy than he
clearly was just by the way he carried himself. He even made a
point to remove the decorations from his horns as to not attract
more attention to himself. He was mid looking over his
appearance in a nearby mirror when he heard a rapping on his
window. It made him about jump out of his skin until he caught
sight of a pale blonde elvi peering in at him.
"Mal?" He moved to the window and opened it, allowing the man in
quickly before the guards or a servant spotted him. "You climbed
all the way over here? You weren't kidding about those Elvi
reflexes." He said in some awe before he then shook his head to
focus. "Okay, so to get out of here I say we take the trellis
down and through a side door the servants use to gather water
for the gardens. It's not well guarded and I think it should
still be open for the night crew. I would offer to fly us over
the gate, but I'm sure the guards would see me quite easily." He
offered before shooing him back out the window.
The two made a rather harrowing way down, landing in the grass
as softly as they could. Needless to say Eir's lack of
experience showed by the way he stumbled, but thankfully he
didn't make too much of a ruckus. They were almost caught by a
gardener on their way out, but a nearby tree absconded them long
enough till the man passed. From there it was smooth sailing to
the tavern district, specifically back to the tavern they had
seen before.
The streets of Glapera were just as lively at night, with
laborers still hard at work and those that kept the city running
going about their duties. Some of the more well dressed citizens
seemed livelier and more jovial than in the day time, clearly
enjoying the lack of heat from the sun and the night life that
was brewing closer to the tavern district. If before sounds
could be heard, now it was practically a sea of noise and color
in the streets and in the businesses that lined the
thoroughfare.
The business itself, the Dragon's Hoard, was a large
establishment with a bar and many forms of entertainment and
games of skill and chance. Men and women spent their money
freely and seemed to be enjoying themselves. The laughter and
roars of protest in the harsh sounding Draconian tongue cut
through the jovial music, played by a band that looked almost as
intoxicated as some of the patrons. Where coin was flowing,
women and men in all states of dress seemed to be serving
patrons and providing company. It was all organized chaos, both
wild and liberating as well as overwhelming for the young drake
that stared wide eyed at it all. Eir seemed a bit mystified and
uncertain about it all, especially when a scantily clad woman
offered him a wink and a proposition for a "good time". He
politely turned her down and scooted closer to Malachi, as he
was wholly unsure of what to do. "So this is what it's like...My
uncle did say they were exciting, but there's so much going on."
Eir said, him jumping slightly when a man knocked out another
nearby for "cheating". He gulped, wondering if that was a sign
of what was about to happen to them for being where they
shouldn't be. "Do you think we should stay or go? I mean we did
say we would observe..." He asked Malachi since he felt like
they stuck out like a sore thumb, even if most didn't even give
them much more than a glance because Malachi looked so
different.

He grinned sheepishly at the drake’s frightened reaction and
rubbed the back of his neck, “Let’s say I’ve had my fair share
of scaling trellises and windowsills”
This rascally behaviour was originally why the servants
‘conveniently’ relocated his room to the wing closer to the
guard house which was busy most hours of the day; little did
they know this gave him a more opportune route through the
laundry which was by the maid’s quarters- all of whom were more
than happy to secretly let the Lordling pass. Mal noted Eir’s
change in attire with approval and hurried down to the grass
before watching his friend follow. He gave a wince at how he
fumbled down the garden trellis, breaking some of the branches
growing there as he went- but again, Mal was more used to Elvi
guards who would twitch at the whisper of an ant.
They made their way into the city again- with only one close
call at being caught -and into the centre of the bustling
nightlife. As they wandered through, no one seemed to pay mind
to the pair; Mal had made sure to mostly cover up in his cloak
to detract from his outlandish appearance. His senses were being
overloaded by the busy street and he simply followed along with
Eir until they reached a building. It looked like a gambling
house of some sort and seemed to ooze the scents of alcohol,
sweat and cheap fragrance. His wrinkled his nose a second to
clear it as they entered. His eyes went to the betting tables
first, and gladly he saw that the games here were the same-
though he spotted a new one -and wondered if they might be game
enough to try their hand at one. He went to mention such an idea
to Eir when he saw the draconian woman approach. Malachi
couldn’t help the fact that his eyes wandered over her adorned
body and traced the plains of exposed skin with his eyes.
When Eir turned her offer down and she began to walk away, Mal
felt his eyes follow just that tad longer before he felt his
friend shift close to him.
“Hey don’t-“ he made a face “You just turned down a perfectly
fine specimen of physical beauty, don’t sidle up to me. People
might get ideas-“
The notion was partly in jest- especially considering male
stayed close by because even he felt off kilter. The foreign
tongue flooded his ears and conflicted with his eyes. He saw
similar things to what he saw back home, but it was all being
washed over by the harsh dialect, almost making him feel deaf in
a sense.
The brief incident that ended in a punch being throw however,
repiqued his interest and his gaze went back to the tables as he
glazed over Eirs question in his mind.
“Have you ever played a game called Baccarat? It’s a kind of
betting game. It’s not really all that hard to get your mind
around. Here- Lets come watch”
Mal quietly led them over to a game that was just beginning.
Three men sat across the table from a woman- also scantily clad
-who was dealing the cards.
“It’s a pretty straight forward game. There are three possible
outcomes; a player win, the bank wins or a tie”
As Mal said this, the men slid their counters onto one of three
spots in front of them, he assumed that the Glaperan text would
read ‘player, bank and tie’
“The aim is to have a card total as close to 9 as possible.
Normal cards are worth their face value, ace is 1 but the King,
Queen and Jack are 0. Here look, they’re about to have a round”
The beautiful drakess drew two sets of cards. Two for the
player, two for the bank. The player cards were a 3 and 4 which
adds to 7. The banks cards were a five and four.
“The bank got 9 exactly, so they win. Anyone who bet on the bank
doubles their money”
The men shuffled their tokens around, some grumbling and some
looking pleased. This happened quite a few times before Malachi
hummed to himself.
“We could perhaps have a go? It’s not that hard after all.
Surely you understand it now after watching for some time?” He
looked to his friend to see if he’d gone cold footed about their
rebellious behaviour.

Eir tensed some when Malachi scolded him for sending the woman
away and for instead sticking close to Malachi. What had he done
wrong? That woman was clearly only wanting to talk to them for
their money and not otherwise. Besides, even if she was pretty,
she shouldn’t have to waste her time when Eir wasn’t interested
in her services and she could make money elsewhere. “Nothing
says you can’t go talk to a fine specimen if that’s really what
you want.” He countered since Eir figured Malachi might after
the way he watched her walk off. Not that the woman minded as
she tossed him a flirtatious glance from where she now lounged
by the bar.
Eir was happy for the distraction of a game and followed
Malachi’s lead over to a table. He watched the way the game
worked. It seemed simple enough and statistically speaking it
was all up to chance. Or was it? He watched the cards closely
and then how the dealers hand moved and how the betting chances
seemed to tip in favor of the 3 options. Soon Eir felt like he
got the hang of it and he gave a curious hum. There was a
pattern there that either the House was aware of or this hand
just worked out that way by some odd chance. But he would need
to test the variables to see if it was true.
When Malachi offered to play, Eir gave a hesitant but small nod.
“I don’t see any harm in a game. I think I’ve got it.” After
all, at this point the game became interesting because he had a
theory to test. Eir had always been good at cards. Not because
of some innate skill at games or dumb luck. Eir was just good at
studying things and liked statistics with research. So card
games were a lot about statistics and numbers, something that
was easier to guess and understand than finessing someone in
conversation. It was why his uncle wanted to drag him to
gambling houses so badly, as Eir often cleaned out his uncle’s
friends, even if he always gave the money back.
He said to his friend before they collected themselves and sat
the table. Eir sat by Malachi and placed a gold token on the Tie
before glancing at Malachi. He picked the opposite which made
him frown a bit in worry. His eyes flicked back to the cards to
see the Tie won. Seems his thoughts on the pattern may be
correct.
The next hand he bet on the Bank, before giving a hum and
switching his choice to the Player. Lo and behold, another
victory for the drake. He kept this up for three more hands
before he gave a bit of a grin to himself. “This is fun! I get
why people enjoy these places.” Eir said excitedly to Malachi,
his comfort in the space increasing to the point he had relaxed
substantially. “Do you like to do this sort of thing in Phonax?
Gambling and such?” He asked since Malachi seemed to more about
these places than he did.

Malachi watched Eir bet with curiosity; it seemed the man was
deliberating his bets with thought- as if there were a formula.
He'd already tried to explore patterns or ways of exploiting the
game but had cast this aside thinking it was all up to chance.
However, as Eir won bet after bet after bet- the table growing a
little antsy -this idea was once more brought into light. He'd
never had the brain for numbers but perhaps the drake's astute
mind had picked up on it. It was very evident with the way he
won round after round.
At the question Malachi gave a nod, "I often play this game;
either at an establishment like this or with servants at home.
It's fun when you have the money to play with-"
The young lord often bet too much for his own good and either
came off second best, or greatly doubled his earnings. To one
with money to spare and a very small number of people he could
call genuine companions, it was things like this that he'd used
to help him feel not so lonely. You could have a group of
friends for the evening to drink, talk and gamble with before he
had to head home to normal existence. He often suffered bouts of
what the physician had deemed 'melancholy' after such nights
out. His father blamed the drinking, his mother blamed the fact
that he was up until the small hours of the morning; but what
Malachi really felt after returning from a night out like that,
was how hollow and lonely he really was in this white marble
prison. However true to form, Malachi ensured that he kept his
charming and witty persona up to ensure he didn't further
isolate himself.
This was partly why the trip overseas had brought such light
back to him; he had a purpose, he had a friend and there was no
one he knew that could make assumptions about who he was based
on his name or reputation.
A drake snarled as Eir won yet another round- this one a tie, an
outcome with an 8 to 1 chance. It would seem that the table was
growing antsy with the young drake's success. Mal tensed a
little, unsure as to what the drake began to growl out.
"Wux re vi vhis!" he said, slamming his fist down on the table.
Mal's hand went to his rapier under the table and he was
immediately on edge, looking between his friend and the angered
drake.
"Mobi ui thric krehl di wux ultrinninanir zyak kiarf!" another
joined in and the rest of the table seemed to grumble in
agreement. Mal quickly grabbed Eir's pouch and swept his
winnings into it, shoving it into his hands. This was going
south veryyyyy quickly. While it was good to win, there was an
art to doing it in a way that would not make people want to kill
you.
"Itrewic hesi ulk'igh spical!" the original one yelled and they
all rose from their chairs. Malachi hauled Eir to his feet by
the cloak.
"Look, it's getting late anyway! We were just leaving-" he
addressed the group in Duthul. He hustled Eir and they both set
off at a run out of the tavern, bursting into the dark street.
The angry mob of gamblers followed suit and were shouting as
they began to flee. Mal drew his sword and held it at the ready
just in case.
1. Wux re vi vhis! You are a cheat!
2. Mobi ui thric krehl di wux ultrinninanir zyak kiarf! There is
no chance of you winning so often!
3. Itrewic hesi ulk'igh spical Get our money back!

Eir was enjoying himself thoroughly with the game, even if he
was able to predict most of the outcomes. Occasionally he would
get one or two wrong, but he consistently had streaks of 5 if
not 7 streaks of wins. He was liking the fact that this was
something he could memorize and tease apart, and Malachi
appeared to be enjoying himself. He had seen odd flashes of
reservation and sadness in Malachi occasionally that made Eir
feel bad. He wasn’t sure what life was like for Malachi in
Phonax, but the brief descriptions and information he teased out
made him think it wasn’t all that nice. To be honest, Malachi
made it sound like he was having family troubles and that a lot
of pressure was put on him to be a certain way.
“I get why you like it! This is fun!” Eir chimed in glee as he
won yet another large sum and slid it back towards their large
pile of conjoined earnings. “Do you think we could play another
game after—?” Before he could finish his thought, the drake near
them spoke out angrily against them. Eir tensed when he called
Eir a cheater and dared to get lippy with him. While not
confrontational by nature, Eir was hardly one to take an insult
or put up with slander.
“Si mi ti vi vhisar.“ Eir growled back, a more hiss like quality
to his voice from the anger of this man insulting his pride.
When these people made an insinuation that it was impossible to
win this much and that was why Eir was cheating, a glare lit on
his face. “Coi ui filki patterns vur viprekilic. tikil malai
tiliw kampiun!” Eir knew his pride was getting in the way of his
common sense as Malachi seemed to be trying to usher him out.
His attention went to his friend, the clink of coins and Malachi
grabbing him by the cloak breaking his concentration on the
others. “Leaving? Why would we leave when we were having fun?”
He asked almost indignantly but stopped when he noted the people
got to their feet and hustled to follow them to the door. Oh
no….Were they actually in danger here? Eir took up a quicker
pace before it became a sprint when their pursuers picked up
their pace.
“What the—Why are they so angry?! This is just a
misunderstanding.” Eir said but didn’t slow his pace as he
navigated the street with Malachi. He saw the man go for his
sword and instantly his eyes widened.
“No no, let’s not fight them. C-Come on, I think I know a way
around!” He nudged Malachi toward an alley and hustled past
crates and filth towards a scaffolding for construction. They
darted around the beams, with one of their pursuers gaining on
them. Eir was puffing a bit with effort since it didn’t help
that he had all this money in his hands. “Wait—we don’t need
this!” He shouted a bit in realization to himself before turning
on his heels. With a surprisingly precise throw, the coin bag
was thrown and hit the drake in the face. It sent the man into a
beam and made the scaffolding unstable.
Noting that it was dangerously close to falling on them, Eir
grabbed Malachi and pulled him down a side street.
With that path now blocked, Eir ran back onto the Main Street,
only to find they still had the other two to contend with. One
seemed to be gaining, but Eir was mostly concerned with just
getting to the wealthier quarter where they could safely hide.
Tanslation: “I’m not cheating.”
“It is just patterns and numbers. Any idiot could understand.”

"They lost a lot of coin to you tonight Eir- and by the god's
you're a card shark! It's no wonder they thought you were
cheating. If I didn't know you better I'd probably have thought
the same thing!" he said as they took off at a run. He kept the
cloak tight over his shoulders and tried his best to hide his
face. He knew all too well that if people knew who you were they
wouldn't be afraid to reap compensation- and as the only Elvi in
this country, it wouldn't be hard to find him. He could only
imagine that Eir would be in a similar position as a wealthy
lord in the country of Glapera.
Malachi looked at Eir in confusion as he gestured for him to put
away his sword. They were going to be pummelled-
Oh? Another way? It was probably best not to go around swinging
your sword in a place that was already ready to boot him at any
sign of trouble.
He re-sheathed his sword and hurried after Eir, casting a glance
over his shoulder at the ever closer pursuers. It burned in him
a little to turn tail and flee, but he saw the sense in it.
Whatever plan Eir had, he'd better make it quick. They skidded
through the streets and wove around houses, Malachi trying to
keep track of where they were to perhaps anticipate any doubling
back. Mal ducked as they wove through scaffolding and clambered
through the beams quickly, trying to gain any advantage.
"Wait-- we don't need this!" called Eir, halting. Mal skidded to
a halt as well and looked over his shoulder to watch his friend
launch his coin purse at the pursuer. If the attacker wanted the
money back, they were sure getting more than they bargained for
when the heavy pouch rocketed into his face and sent him
stumbling backward.
"Shi-" the pair ducked out of the way of the collapsing
scaffolding and hurried away, bursting out into the main street.
Only a few bystanders seemed to notice them as they kept moving
to stay ahead of the other two. With a grunt of annoyance Mal
drew his sword again, arching it in a sharp swing. It came down
on a rope that was holding a stack of barrels together in a
formation and sent them rolling along the street. They collided
with one of the thugs but the other simply leapt over them and
continued after them.
"Are all Draconians so bull-headed?!" he managed "It's just some
coin!"
Drat it- They weren't losing the other one so easily. Mal looked
ahead and noted that there was a stall selling bright, coloured
women's robes. With a gasp of an idea, he yanked Eir into the
stands. There was a gasp from the few women among the clothes
and Mal threw back the cloak of his hood to press a finger to
his lips. They seemed to get the message, and kept quiet,
despite looking quite off-put. Mal grabbed a nearby dress- pink
of all things -and began tugging it on. He tossed a yellow one
at Eir with a hiss "Quick- get this on!"
The outfits had headscarves that could cover the lower halves of
their faces and Mal pulled his on hastily.
Mal gave the store clerk a generous amount of coin and looped
his arm with his friends. They emerged from the clothes store
only to come face to face with the attacker, who seemed to be
searching for them.
His eyes fell to the pair, only briefly flickering in hesitation
before saying, "Tepoha wux vorel aesthyri ocuirtor vi pair di
thugs zahae tenpiswo?"
Mal glanced at Eir, eyes wide and his head gesturing for him to
deal with whatever the man said.
He hoped this worked-
Have you beautiful women seen a pair of
thugs around here?"
Eir tossed Malachi an indignant look when he said he might have
agreed with the thugs that he was cheating. His pride got in the
way of him finding it funny since honestly Eir was honest to a
fault. He didn’t like lying, hated swindling people, and was
someone who wanted to be accepted and accept others. It bothered
him that others thought himcapable of it, but he figured Malachi
was kidding at most. “I’ve never cheated a day in my life! I
rather like card games and it’s really not all that—!” Before he
could finish the thought, Malachi snatched him into a booth. Eir
tensed when he was swallowed in a flurry of womens clothing, the
silks and covers blindingly bright against the dim lighting.
Eir winced when a few women looked startled and unsure of what
was going on, since he was nervous he was frightening them. But
Malachi seemed to have some idea so he was trying to follow his
lead. That was until he started hauling dresses off the racks
and handed him one. Eir rose a brow at the bright yellow robe
and face covering, something typically worn by women attending a
temple for religious purposes. When Malachi demanded he put it
on, Eir balked and quickly shook his head.
“I’m not putting on a dress. This is—“
“svadrav si ehtah wux si mi gethrisjir ekess klae dout vhisir
vreolic lae toothpicks!” The roar from the thug nearby made
Eir’s eyes big and he quickly snatched on the robe. By the time
they were ready to make their escape, they looked like a
passable pair of young women returning from temple.
To his bemusement and fear, they ran into their pursuer that
seemed to be confused by them. Thankfully he didn’t seem to
recognize them and even asked where two men went. Eir stares
with wide, worried eyes at the man but soon worked up the
courage to speak when Malachi looked at him expectantly.
“axun, astahii ran persvek tenpiswo vur jutosha ekik wer spical.
zi cotose!” Eir said in a high, reedy voice to hide the more
masculine edges to his already soft voice. The man looked
confused then pissed before ducking into the clothing stall just
behind them. Eir went with Malachi further up the street in
hurried, but not conspicuous steps. Finally when they reached
the richer quarters of the city, Eir snatched off the face
covering, looking wide eyed and pale. “That...That was really
dangerous. I thought we were going to get our asses kicked.” He
said before an almost relieved but panicked smile reached his
lips. A laugh bubbled from him, especially at how ridiculous
Malachi looked in his pink robe. “But That was Also the single
most cool thing I’ve ever done. Did you see the look on their
faces with the coin bag? Or the barrels?!” He broke into a
fuller laugh that almost hurt his side.
Translation: “When I find you I am going to use your cheating
fingers as toothpicks.”
“Yes, they ran in here and escaped out the back. Very rude!”
