Re: CHPT 0.11 Brothers (Malachi & Eir'Asa)

Malachi hummed and nodded, moving to stand at the bar with Eir.
The only acknowledgement he gave the curious stares was a
plesant smile before turning back to Eir as they discussed
things.
"I wouldn't say things are stricter, but at home I would say I'm
seen as a bit of a... how do I put it? Liberal? Progressive? As
you probably know, nobles often are required to associate with
people of higher standing; my mother hates everything 'common'
but I happen to prefer quote, unquote commoners. At first I
tried to hide who I was, but before long it became obvious that
I was a Hythian. It took them a while to get back to the casual
level we were at, but now I get reprieve from the suffocating
expectations that is my own home. My home is restrictive, but I
try to swindle my way out of such rules. No one else besides the
upper-class is really restricted-" he took the offered drink at
the bar and placed down a coin for it, sipping before looking at
Eir in exhasperation "And the only reason we are restricted is
because we just- we just make up all these standards for
ourselves! It's ridiculous if you ask me..."
He took a deep drink from the ale and sighed, leaning on the
bar. He often got a little too fired up about that particular
issue... he hated how society put all these expectations on
them- no wonder people thought all Elvi were the same. They were
essentially, or at least made to be.
"This is very nice ale, though a little darker than I'm used to"
he said peering into it. Perhaps a different brewing process?
Either way, the cool drink eased his discomfort at the hot
weather and he relaxed a little more.
His eyes scanned the room and the nearby people, taking in the
chatter and colourful dress, admiring the individuality of
everyone. His eyes settled on one draconian woman, who seemed to
be looking their way. With a wave of his hand, she seemed to
snap out of her staring and look to the Elvi, sending a sheepish
grin his way and eyes flicking between him and...
Malachi's brow quirked and he followed her gaze to look at- Eir.
"Huh..." he quipped, a smirk appearing on his face.
Leaning in close to Eir he gave him a small nudge, "We could
start those... flirting lessons if you want. Give you the 101
run down?"
He glanced to the pretty draconian woman again, who glanced away
as to not be caught looking again.

Eir listened closely to what Malachi had to say about his home.
He was surprised he launched into a bit of a rant about his
homeland and their expectations. The news that Malachi liked
hanging out with commoners seemed strange at first but then Eir
realized why. He didn't like the restriction of his life in high
status and how it separated him from freewill and obligation. He
understood how restrictive that could be and how sometimes you
needed to feel like you had less pressure and more control over
you life. His last comment really made Eir think. Malachi's
family must have put a lot of pressure on him as the second son.
Was he treated poorly or differently than his older brother? Was
that why he was so passionate about escaping? Eir felt a bit of
kinship to the idea that these expectations were constructs they
forced upon themselves. After all, he lived his whole life shut
up in a home to prepare to become the next head of household of
a prominent family. It was a lot of pressure that he then put on
himself to act a certain way, to think a certain way, and to be
a certain way...Perhaps that was silly of him when the Eir he
was now hardly felt completely like the Eir he felt deep down
that he could be. Maybe that's why he was drawn to Malachi?
"I think you're right...It does seem odd to make ourselves fit
into the confines of a label or the existence based on others
thoughts on us. Well, here you won't have to worry about that."
He said as he accepted a drink from the bartender and gave a
gentle thanks. He took a drink and gave a nod at the description
of the ale.
"It was a brew a friend showed me. I like it better since it
isn't as strong. To be honest I'm not the best drunk." He was
only drunk once and it wasn't pretty for the awkward man...
Eir was mid drink when Malachi leaned in and offered to teach
him a bit about flirting. He blinked, his brow raising since he
hadn't anticipated to start already. Eir tried to follow his
gaze, but only noted the crowd and other Draconians. "Um sure? I
mean I'm not the best at--Um. I suppose there are plenty of
subjects." He said but winced at that wording. "Um I meant
people. Sorry." He rubbed the back of his neck, unable to help
the blush creeping into his cheeks.

“Sub- subjects? Oh good gods...” he took a breath
and looked at Eir seriously.
“Women are not animals-“ he seemed to reconsider
this comment for a second “Well, most of them... So
don’t treat them like... like... some kind of experiment.
They’re people. As for which person we should start
with...?”
Malachi in one smooth movement, swished to stand on the other
side of Eir, meaning there was nothing in between the drakes
except a few feet of empty space, “She seems quite lovely,
no?”
He spoke lowly as he nodded to the woman, as to not alert her.
Though, once more she glanced away and flushed ever so slightly.
She herself moved to stand at the bar and ask for a drink,
placing her at an arms length from Eir.
“Okay, I think we can narrow it down to three steps. The
‘three c’s’ Step 1: Connection. Be friendly,
introduce yourself. Step 2: Compliment. Spot something you like
about her and make a comment on it. Step 3: Conversation. Find a
topic- I don’t know- something relevant and go from
there” The instructions were shot at a rapid rate and
Malachi gave Eir’Asa an encouraging- yet solid -nudge
toward her with his hip, staying at Eirs back as support. He
simply acted nonchalant and took deep draughts from his flagon.
When this one was quickly finished, he asked the bartender for
something a tad stronger. Elvi had incredibly fast metabolisms
and the previous drink had done nothing for him whatsoever. He
listened from where he stood.
Lae’Vera stood drinking her drink casually, acting as
though she was content with just standing alone. However, she
was hoping that at some point there would be a break in
conversation between the... foreigner and the male with him
where the drake might notice her. He was simply cute and gosh
darn handsome. The clothes spoke wealth, sure. However, that was
not the more appealing feature. She often frequented these
commons and had not come across him before- that and he had a
nice set of horns if you know I mean. The dark ebony horns
protruding from his equally dark hair were quite handsome and
seemed to match his strong silent vibes.
She was mid-sip from her drink when she felt someone shove into
her just slightly, making her nearly choke on her drink. She put
it down quickly and wiped her mouth to come face to face with
the drake she’d been eyeing off. It seemed that his
foreign friend had had a hand in the ‘clandestine
meeting’ as previously he was the only barrier between
them.
When the drake simply gaped and looked flustered, mouth looking
as if it were going to speak but not, she gave a giggle and
tilted her head.
“Hello. Are you okay?”

Eir blushed slightly at being scolded since he knew he had
spoken in error. He was used to being a casual observer instead
of a participant in most things. That way, he could regard
people as patients, subjects of study, and beyond himself. He
knew it wasn't fair to think of people that way, but it made
things easier for him, especially when he did find a person
attractive. Thinking of them as an observable statistic made it
better than thinking of them as completely out of his league.
Such as the woman that Malachi chose to be the poor unsuspecting
soul for his "practice" on. She was lovely, with sun issed skin
and dark hair and a svelte form covered by a pretty blue dress.
Immediately Eir clammed up, his tongue tying in his mouth as he
looked away from the woman and over to his side at Malachi. "I
mean, she is but--A-Are we sure about this?" He asked with a bit
of a tremor to his voice, his stomach plummeting at mere thought
of having to fumble his way through flirting with a pretty
woman.
The list of steps he had to follow entered his already panicking
brain, drawing a gulp from Eir as Malachi spoke quickly. 3 C's?
What? Was he supposed to do that all in one breath or wait for
her to respond? Was he supposed to only focus on one at a time?
But complimenting could go wrong if he complimented the wrong
thing or aspect? What did he mean just pick a topic? This was
all too sudden and hardly going to end well.
"Mal. I think I change my--" Before he could finish he was
bumped forward and into the young drake. He cursed Malachi a bit
as he floundered, unable to help that his heartbeat was
quickening nor that he couldn't get his words to form. Right,
right, he needed to introduce himself. Wait how should he do
that? 'Hey, I'm Eir'Asa' That should be fine....But why was that
not coming out of his mouth?
Her question with this cute tilt of her head and the giggle made
him clear his throat as he found he was being silly and awkward.
He could do this...Just like learning to heal, he could learn
how to have a decent converstion with a pretty woman.
"H-Hi--Oh! No worries, I'm fine. But are you?--okay I mean? It
seems I jostled you and that was impolite of me. Bivai." In his
fumbling with words, he reached for a cloth to help in case any
of the drink got on her dress, but he paused when he saw it was
quite dirty. Finding that to be a hot bed of possible germs and
bacteria, he quickly tossed out that effort and instead offered
her a reserved smile. Oh! He hadn't introduced himself. He
blushed a bit, wondering if he was mucking this all up. "I'm
Eir'Asa, by the way. I don't think we've met before...So
ava'yorn." He added the greeting with a bit of an awkward
chuckle though he did feel some tension laxing even if he was
nervous about step two with the compliment phase... "And you
are?"

Lae’Vera watched as he began to collect up his words and finally
speak; he had a nice gentle cadence to his voice. His
floundering apology brought a smile to her face and she tucked a
stray curl of her hair behind her ear before she turned a cheeky
glance on him.
“Oh I’m fine. However my drink seems to have disappeared in the
kerfuffle” she hinted, setting her now empty cup on the bench.
Malachi could tell she was asking for a replacement drink, only
natural and it was a test to see if Eir was a gentleman or not.
Without waiting for his reply, she went on with his next line of
conversation, “Greetings Eir’Asa, I’m Lae’Vera. It’s nice to
meet you- or should I say collide?” she gave another chuckle and
took a drink from her now filled glass; if it was Malachi who
had to fill this up because he didn’t get the hint, she doesn’t
notice.
He seemed really awkward, and Lae wasn’t sure if this was his
nature- which was cute -or if she’d already been a bit too... as
her mother put it ‘effervescent’ with her greeting.” She was
often told to keep a lid on it or go bother someone else
whenever she wanted to have a chat. However, she couldn’t help
but talk to people; find stories of people she never met and
note them down for herself to read later. She was something of
an archivist of lives.
Now these new faces and her interest was piqued.
Malachi observed silently, only cringing a little. He wasn’t
doing to badly for someone who knew nothing,

Lea'Vera was a pretty name and Eir found it rolled off the
tongue easily. Not to mention, she was a pretty woman with a
warm presence about her. She seemed to have this vivaciousness
about her that was contagious and made him want to smile instead
of frown out of nervous habit. But her hinting went in one ear
and out the other. Honestly, Eir thought she was complaining or
fishing for an apology. He almost gave her one and offered to
buy her another drink when she moved on. Well, she certainly
knew how to carry a conversation better than he did.
The collide comment made him look down sheepishly, knowing that
that wasn't entirely his fault. After all, Malachi did bump him
in this direction. Speaking of Malachi, Eir wondered if he was
impressing the man or worrying him. Was he flirting well or
poorly in his teacher's eyes?
"Yeah, I suppose collide is a better word for it. I'll admit it
was due to help from my friend, Malachi. Perhaps a simple
greeting and not spilling your drink would have been better." He
noted she drank from a now full cup and his head tilted some in
confusion. Oh, had Mal refilled it? He glanced back briefly to
ask but then realized that must have been rude and turned his
attention to Lea'Vera again.
Right, he needed to compliment her like Malachi said. But what
to compliment? He pondered that a second as he looked her over
as if appearing to study her. Not in a lewd way, but an almost
flustered way where his eyes often darted away. He could
compliment her hair and how healthy it looked. Or perhaps her
dress and how the colors matched the melanin in her skin well.
Or perhaps how her hips looked sturdy and stable. Or her smile
showed off how her teeth were free of disease. But before any of
that could leave his lips, his eyes landed on her’s and he
struggled to look away. She had to most beautiful eyes, bright
with humor and this warmth there...“It was tougher to get the
first word in because--Right—a compliment hm..." He muttered the
last bit not realizing he was saying it aloud. When a compliment
came to him, he accidentally blurted it out without thinking. "I
noticed you have such pulchritudinous eyes--Ah and a very nice
smile.” That word was often used in scientific studies to
describe the beauty of end results or study participants, but it
was a word that he felt encapsulated all he knew about the
woman. However, he realized how odd that sounded and tried to
supplement with a compliment of her smile. He wasn't sure how he
was doing now, but at least he got through steps one and two
without any major problems.

Her brow quirked in amusement and she tried to withhold a smile
at his 'secret murmurs' What kind of advice or formula was he
following for this interaction? It would seem he was not quite
socially adept at this point. Perhaps the foreigner was helping
with this? As he seemed to look her over, she felt her face heat
up a little in embarrassment.
However, her eyes widened in surprise and confusion at the long
word and she tilted her head a little, "I'm... unfamiliar with
what that particular word means buuuuut I'll take it as a
compliment?" she gave a nervous laugh at the end of her sentence
and hurriedly sipped from her cup to hide her flustered smile.
Mal gave a 'eh, not too bad' shrug at the small interaction.
Perhaps the big word made her think he was smart? If she was
into that he supposed.
"I- I like how you've decorated your horns" she said with a
slight glance up to them. Was that creepy? Was that too
innuendous? After all, males with bigger horns were often more
envied- but that wasn't what she had intended to dwell on.
"So, are you from the city? Or elsewhere?" she asked curiously.
He might be some vast traveller if he had this strange being
with him. Perhaps he had tales of seafaring to share- or foreign
places full of excitement! She leant in closer, eager to hear
his reply. She wanted to know more of who this Eir'Asa was.

Eir saw her eyes widen and instantly felt that nervousness
bubble back up. Right, right, words needed to be smaller and he
wasn't just talking to himself. He would sound like an ass and
felt like an ass for using a word someone else wouldn't know. He
should explain, to perhaps make her aware he wasn't insulting
her or being snide. "It is a compliment. Pulchritudinous is
another way of saying beautiful. Well more in the scientific
sense to describe physical observations, but that hardly
diminishes the sentiment...I think." He stated as his blush got
a bit deeper, but he was trying to be calm and collected. After
all, this was just a woman at a tavern and not some three headed
monster. Lea'Vera seemed sweet and rather chatty, which boded
well for getting to know her even if it was as just friends and
he didn't muck this up terribly.
When she complimented his horns, he blinked in realization of
that. Oh yes, he had them showing didn't he? The whole point of
the adornments was a status symbol that placed him as nobility,
but now it was a habit more than a care in his mind. Well and to
show off your horns for better chances of impressing a
significant other. It was interesting to have someone compliment
it just because he never often heard many mention it in Aurix.
Most of the nobility and wealthy in Glapera lived in his home
city state as it was the financial hub of Glapera. "Oh--Thanks.
It's nice to hear it doesn't all look strange, even if it is
tradition. To be honest I kind of forget all this is there. You
know, peripheral vision and getting used to it." He rambled a
bit before he cleared his throat and let her speak further. The
question about where he was from made him perk up. Oh was this
step 3? Did she know the three C's as well?
Before he could formulate an answer she was leaning in, getting
closer with a palpable curiosity. It made his heart race a
second but he took a moment to calm himself so his voice
wouldn't shake. "I'm from the Aurix city state. My mother's
family owns a home in Sililos as that's where they are from. We
visit usually during the summers. Are you from here?" He asked
before his expression brightened in realization. Oh, she seemed
like someone that liked foreigners. Maybe she would enjoy
getting to meet Malachi? "Oh pardon me, my friend Malachi here
is from Phonax. Today is his second day in the city so we were
taking a look at the commons." He looked over his shoulder and
gave Malachi a pleasant smile, hoping is friend didn't mind
being included in conversation since Eir felt bad he was left
out.

Her features really went another shade of pink when he had to
spell out exactly what the unfamiliar word meant. It burned a
little in her cheeks and she found there was a light feeling in
the pit of her stomach. He was genuine, if not a little awkward
but it was cute. She looked away slightly with a shy smile, “I
don’t think it diminishes the sentiment at all”
She tilted her head curiously as he spoke of being from around
here and hummed. She’d live in Aurix at least three years now
and was surprised not to have noticed him.
“I moved here with my father and brothers three years ago from
our really remote farm. We farmed spices and such but the
drought about four years ago sent us into debt. We had to sell
things and move to the city. Now father works on ships and we
have jobs around here”
Her eyes were drawn to the oddly pale creature who shuffled in
at Eir’s introduction.
“Greetings Malachi, I hope what you have seen so far has been of
value?” she wasn’t sure how she felt about such foreigners, but
she would remain unbiased until it was proven otherwise.
Malachi simply gave a nod, “Indeed, I’ve found a lot of things
interesting and valuable. Much to see here it seems”
He looked to Eir, “Eir was just informing me that he would
probably be able to teach me how to speak Vs’shtak. He’s been so
welcoming and generous- a real gentleman” complimented Malachi,
pumping up Eir’s credibility in front of the woman.
She simply looked at Malachi with a raised brow, somewhat
catching onto his game. She doubted this was something Eir’Asa
had asked of his friend. Or was it?
“And where might you be from? And what species may I ask...
you’re awfully... pale...”
He gave a laugh, “Phonax. I’m Elvi, and I doubt I’ll be pale for
much longer under this scorching sun. Hey Eir! We were planning
a beach trip weren’t we?” he began, formulating something in his
mind.
“Perhaps Miss uh— this lovely lady would like to join us
whenever we decide to go?”
Lae’Vera simply looked to Eir passively, clearly only interested
in what he had to say at this point.

The news that tragedy brought her to the city made his face fall
some. He felt a wealth of sympathy since that must have been
hard on her family to go from owning a farm to losing it all.
Sadly, the climate in Glapera gave way to hurricanes and
draughts so it was always a gamble which you would get. Still,
it sounded terrible for the woman. But to hear her father worked
for the ships there in the port, Eir gave a curious look. "Ah my
father manages a few ships under the Aluanas trading ventures.
Perhaps your father has sailed with them some time?" He said
before his attention went back to the talk at hand with Malachi.
It seemed like Malachi was being awfully complimentary of him
and seemed to be steering the conversation away from himself.
Perhaps Eir had made a misstep in inviting him over? Even
Lea'Vera seemed almost more quiet around the Elvi man and
unsure. That made Eir wonder if it was because Malachi was a
foreigner or if it was his more outgoing personality. But, he
let that drop when Malachi changed the subject to the beach. Ah
yes, that would be the perfect place to get their friend tan and
have a good time. "Yeah, I was thinking earlier in the day when
it's cooler so you don't burn alive. The coisig is popular at
that time too so it will be a good time to introduce you to more
people." Eir told Malachi before he seemed to realize what he
was hinting at. He wanted Eir to invite Lea'Vera.
Now, that sounded lovely, but also nerve wracking. Surely such
an invitation would send a signal that he found her attractive
and would want to spend more time with her. Surely that would
make her uncomfortable...But Eir found himself willing to try,
even if he was nervous. "Sure. Lea'Vera, would you like to go to
the beach with us? I'm sure we could meet up soon when he
doesn't have lessons and you don't have work? I mean that is if
you would like to--I understand the beach can be ill-favored by
some what with the risks of drowning, sun exposure, and skin
damage and bleaching of horns--Oh and this disease that fish
carry that causes--" He paused, realizing that he was going to
far by a look that Malachi gave him. Was he talking too much? He
swallowed the news of a terrible disease and offered her a shy
smile. "But I suppose there are ways to mitigate those factors.
And it would be nice to see you again." He finished, hoping that
was enough to salvage the conversation.
