       [color=black][font=georgia][size=11pt]||  Life is a highway
       ||
       ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
       [color=black][font=georgia]
It all started as a simple plan: get Mac a date and wing man her
through it an help her move on. Seth wasn't a mastermind and
never claimed to be one, but with Kimmi's help, they were sure
they had the plan all figured out. Kimmi knew a chill guy who
was in a local punk band named Syllus, a bassist and totally
good match for Mac. Seth remembered their time together and she
was always getting p!ssed at him for making all sorts of random
plans with people and always being on the move in one way or
another. In hindsight, he totally got it (he didn't) and
realized that she needs someone who embodies chill, which, in
       this case, was definitely Syllus.
From Kimmi's explanation, Syllus was so chill that he once sat
outside through a freak tornado without so much as panicking.
Granted, he had taken a large dosage of shrooms an hour before,
but that would normally make someone more freaked out, not less,
so it was a good testament to how relaxed the man could be.
Either way, the time came to make the offer to Mac.
On a Thursday when Seth and Mac had the same evening shift and
things were slow in the store, he made his move. "Yo, Mac." He
said slyly as he slid over the bagging area of her checkout,
landing next to her. He was sure not to make unwanted contact as
he knew she didn't jive with that, but he leaned in real close
and whispered in her ear, all of which happened maybe a bit too
quickly. "We've got something going down tomorrow night and need
       a fourth person, you interested?"
Seth had a penchant for mystery and forgoing context when it
came to recruitment for adventures but he was always sure to
explain whatever needed to be in order to clear things up.
Knowing damn well Mac wouldn't be interested in double dates
willingly, he elected to leave that part out for now, sure that
a surprise date would be more thrilling while also ensuring Mac
actually showed. "We're gonna go see a cursed tombstone and see
if the rumors about it are true!" He chuckled, unable to
seriously make it through such a ridiculous line. "But mostly
we're gonna go and drink in the cemetery." There was a pause
before he trickled in a bit more enticement. "The crowds should
be down this close to Halloween."
At this mention, Seth hoped that she wouldn't think this would
be a surprise party or anything like that. In honesty, Seth
hadn't been involved in Mac's birthday celebrations since they
split up but this year would be different. They would get some
prepackaged cake slices, some beers, and go someplace low lit
and far from the crowds. It wouldn't be a big, gross surprise
she would hate, it would be a small gathering of friends (and
Syllus) with a new boyfriend as the actual gift of the night.
       Excellent.

       [glow=black,2,300][color=black][font=georgia]Mac Graves
       ---------------------------------------------------------
       [color=black][font=georgia][size=11pt]||  Welcome to The Pit
Stop, get your sh!t and get out. ||
       ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
[color=black][font=georgia] Mac raised an eyebrow suspiciously
as Seth said his piece. "We" used in this vague context could
only mean one of two things; Either Kimmi was involved since
Seth all but went out of his way to ever name her out right, as
if to spare her feelings or something? She wasn't really sure.
If anything she just found it annoying and dis-genuine which
wasn't like him at all, but maybe looking back at things, she
never really knew him in the first place... Like he was always
too scared of just being honest about his new relationship in
front of her... Maybe it was just because he was the first to
move on that he felt weird about it. Whatever. She didn't want
to think about that anymore, she was already in a mood after
being stood up yet again last night.
That being said, only other reason Seth would be so casually
vague about who was going would be if it was just a casual meet
up with their mutual friends, but surely he'd of mentioned who
was coming if that was the case... unless if was some sh!tty
birthday bash. Mac hated her birthday and often went out of her
way not to celebrate it or even mention it whenever possible.
Due to her family situation she tended to avoid it all together
when possible, which was made a bit easier with it being just
days before a major holiday Halloween. At first she questioned
if Seth even remembered her birthday was coming up, simply
assuming (secretly hoping) he had forgotten all together.
Mac stood there silent, arms crossed as she seemed to stare into
the nothingness in front of her, contemplating. Her mouth
twitched as he bit down on the inside of her cheek before giving
a sigh. She did like hanging out in cemeteries. "I guess I
could tag along..." She said half-heartedly, but Seth seemed
excited and turning him down felt sort of like kicking a puppy.
She had always had a hard time telling him no, even when it was
a less than good idea, but how bad could this be?
       ---------------------------------------------------------

       [color=black][font=georgia][size=11pt]
Jokes on her, this half baked idea was bad. Very bad. One of his
worst yet in fact. As Mac rocked up to the cemetery she saw the
little sky blue kia that she recognized as Kimmi's as well as
another car she didn't recognize that was covered in a heinous
amount of stickers as if that would keep it from rusting apart.
Before she could mentally tear it's owner apart anymore she was
met with the small group of three waiting for her a little ways
down the path. She heard Seth's laugh before he came into sight,
as Kimmi clung to his arm talking about how it was creepy here.
Then another person came into view, washing them in the stream
of light that from the flashlight she had brought along.
Thankfully the light blinded her contorted expression of
displeasure upon realizing that this was not only an ambush, but
a blind double date. Greaaaat. The only thing that could make
this worse is any mention of her birthday. (Oh just wait Mac, it
       gets worse XD)
"Seems I'm the last to arrive." Mac said trying to not sound as
flat and deflated as she felt in the moment as she gave a small
wave in greeting to the others, a strained smile parting her
lips. As she came into view, she was wearing a black local band
tee and ripped jean shorts with a plaid over shirt wrapped
around her waist and a beanie. Despite the cool autumn air, she
felt rather comfortable. She was smart enough to wear tightly
laced combat boots, perfect for tromping around a graveyard
something she had done a time or two in the past. Despite her
ready attire, in that moment she was trying to keep her silent
seething to a minimum. Her mind cycling through a stream of
excuses she could potentially use to leave early.

Kimmi was the first one to notice Mac walking up and immediately
became overjoyed at the thought of things getting underway.
[color=pink]"Oh Em GEEEEEEE!!!" the overdressed girl squeaked
with an alarming frequency. "What's up girl?!" The small woman
chirped as she pulled Mac into an aggressively friendly hug.
Seth gave a head scratch knowing damn well Mac wasn't pleased
with Kimmi's advances but figured it would fly under the radar
once she got acclimated to the group. After a few moments, Mac's
face was beginning to turn bright red and Seth couldn't tell if
it was rage or embarrassment but, considering they were here to
help her celebrate, it would be best to not allow her to be
tormented further. "All right, all right. Give her some air,
dude." He groaned as he pried Kimmi from her prey. He gave Mac
an apologetic look before greeting her with a gentle tap to the
       shoulder.
"Got someone for you to meet!" Seth barked with feigned
enthusiasm. His hands shifted to frame up the third member of
the night's group: Syllus. A tall man stepped from the shadows,
eclipsing the rest of them in the shadow he cast from the
neighboring street light. He wore a dark hoody that was only
zipped halfway revealing a white crust punk shirt underneath. A
droopy beanie crowned his solemn looking features and it was
adorned with several comically large buttons displaying various
local band logos. Large bags hung beneath the man's eyes,
suggesting he was sleep deprived but it was hard to tell if that
was their natural state or not in this light. Simple, torn up
jeans hung down for what seemed like miles from his waist,
hiding the large legs needed to support such a tall person. His
legs were more like denim tree trunks that anything as the baggy
style really amplified how wide his stance seemed. Regardless of
his length, the oversized hoodie he wore still covered well over
his hands with them only being revealed as he awkwardly waved
upon his approach. Several less than professional tattoos
flashed over the pale white of his hands, suggesting he had
connections with some questionably talented artists.
"So this is Syllus." Seth spoke after the pair had a chance to
look each other over. "And Syllus, this is Mac." He shifted his
arms between the pair like he was a model for the price is
right. It only took a few moments to guess if the price was
right or not but shuffling past any early meeting nerves, Kimmi
appeared once more and snapped onto Seth's arm like a bear trap.
"Look at these cuties together!" The pastel girl chirped without
any insight as to what they were feeling in the moment.

[color=black][font=georgia]Mac's jaw clenched as she tried to
keep from choking on all the words she wish should could say
about this scenario as it unfolded in the form of this retched
gift she never asked for. Worse yet Kimmi wanted to act all gal
pal about things. Which honestly was something Mac had no
interest in... though it wasn't the girls fault. Mac wasn't
exactly a social butterfly and with the added complications of
Seth being her ex, as well as Kimmi's current boyfriend things
were just a bit too messy for Mac's liking. Even if that weren't
the case, there's no way the two of them wouldn't never of ended
up being friends. They were simply too different... but I guess
that was on account of Seth course correcting to someone more
compatible. [color=green]"Hi Kimmi." Mac said through a trying
smile that was cut short as Seth spoke.
Adding salt to the proverbial wound of the interaction, as the
two excitedly introduced her to some total rando. All Mac could
do was wish she too was buried beneath one of these tombstones.
Six feet in any direction but down wasn't far enough to get away
from this night. "Oh, Syllus. Right." She said acknowledging her
looming counterpart that was all but shoved in front of her. She
pinched a few strands of blonde hair between her fingers as she
awkwardly paused, a long silence hanging in the air before
Syllus spoke up speaking only a single word as he bobbed his
head, approvingly? About as tethered to earth as a cloud. "Sup."
Wanting to move this sh!t show along Mac took the initiative,
the faster they got this over with the faster she could make up
some excuse to leave or feign an emergency. As her mind began
thumbing through possible exits she spoke up glancing around,
pretty much anywhere other than the three people in front of
her. "So, where's this grave we were supposed to be looking for
anyway?" She asked pointing her flash light aimlessly amongst
the surrounding tombstones pretending to look about with false
       interest.

Seth scratched the back of his neck as the awkward exchange
unfolded between Mac and Syllus. Of course it was going to be
rough at first, they just needed to get the activity under way.
"First things first." Seth said with a mischievous grin. He
reached into the interior pocket of his jacket, fumbling for a
moment before producing four large cans of some sort of
beverage. Cookoo Lookoo was plastered on each of the multi
colored cans along with several warnings about mixing THC,
Alcohol, and Caffeine. Seth handed each member a can, saving
Mac's for last. The only difference with Mac's can of deadly
drink was a simple, red bow Seth had Kimmi tie to it moments
       before they arrived.
"Happy Birthday!" He chirped with a humorous edge. "I didn't
know what to get you so I grabbed your favorite flavor." Seth
scratched the back of his neck, a little embarrassed that he
didn't have enough money for a proper gift but tonight, the true
gift was the fun they would all have hanging out in the cemetery
anyway so this would have to suffice. It was unclear if Mac
actually liked this flavor or if she always picked it because of
the over the top packaging and insane sweetness somehow flanked
with 14% ABV but Seth had shared more than a few of these brews
with her in the past so it was a good bet.
Even Syllus popped the top of his can and gladly sipped from it
either unbothered by the intense sweetness or eager to gain some
liquid courage, either way, Seth stepped out in front, moving
further into the winding paths of the cemetery. Always one to be
the first to lead the group onward, Seth waved his hand over his
head. "Alright gang." He started with feigned bravado. "Let's go
find some ghosts!" The last line was a reference to a popular
ghost hunting show that was free to watch on Yootube. It was
something that Mac and Seth always had on as background noise
when they lived together and they would often find themselves
streaming new episodes when they aired even though they mocked
the over the top acting and premises whenever possible.
With a click, the flashlight Seth produced erupted with a beam
of light. Every so often the light flickered and blinked,
causing Seth to bang it against his palm to get it to work
properly again. "Sorry, I found this thing in the glove
compartment of my car when I bought it... It should work fine
       for tonight though."

[color=black][font=georgia]Mac blinked surprised as Seth slapped

with the sheen of what was left of the condensation it gave off
leaving the small red bow tied around it's middle damp. The

kindness that cut like a knife not that she knew better.. Mac
would never hold it against her. None of this was her fault, but
coming along was becoming to feel more and more like a mistake.
Taking the bow, she reached out willingly to Kimmi for probably
one of the first times, taking her wrist before slipping it over
the girls hand like a bracelet. "Thanks." Mac murmured
earnestly to her in regards to trying to make something mundane
special. Just then Seth began spouting off quotes from the Ghost
Hunter's show like a dork, this caused Mac to laugh, a bit of
       light returning to her eyes.
"You've forgotten the golden rule of ghost hunting, 'Always be

from beneath her face making a mock impression that of Zak Brak
the Ghost hunter, something that would be lost on those who
wouldn't understand the niche reference. "I put brand new

his chest. His eyes were up turned like happy crescents as a
smile curled along his lips. As he raised his hand to take a sip
of his Cookoo lookoo, his hand rattled with the sound of
blackened rosary like beads tinking against the aluminum. He was
tall, well over six foot. Something notable at least to Mac in
particular. She had spent a better part of her more recent dates
showing up at towering 5'9" only to have the men comment, asking
her how tall she was before watching them crumble internally as
they out themselves of their supposed 'Six Foot Tall' lies. Seth
had probably overheard her complaining about it and thought this
was a solution... but it was never really about the height so
much as the lie that bothered her in those situations.
"You guys seem pretty comfortable out here, well most of you."
He noted chuckling slightly as he watch Kimmi shuffle over to
cling onto Seth. Contrasted by Mac who more confidently moved
about, her eyes exploring her surroundings and scanning the
nearby graves with more familiarity. "So you guys are trying to

who meditated so long they though he died and buried him alive.
They claim that touching his grave can bring either
enlightenment or a twisted trick." The man spoke with a slow and
deliberate sort of a calm, his deep voice resonating through the
night air as they group walked through the graveyard. An Eerie
fog began to settle around the group only parting a little ways
ahead of them as if the whole of the cemetery were leading them
       to somewhere in particular.
Syllus swiped as the long dark hair that fell into his face
showcasing the scratchy hand poked tattoo of a lotus on the back
of his hand as he glanced over at Mac, it didn't take a genius
to read the weird vibes of this group, even for someone as low
and slow as Syllus seemed to be. "Interesting company to keep on
ones birthday, most people like more lively company." Syllus
prodded, finally receiving a more direct interaction from Mac as
she turned over her shoulder and spoke to him briefly pausing on
the path, the beam of light held in her hand suspending
signalling her stop. [color=green]"I'm not exactly an extrovert,
besides dead people make for better company than most living
folks...hard to lie or complain when you're dead." Syllus smiled
wider at this and gave a hearty chuckle as if truly amused by
her candid answer. "You'd be surprised, but I understand the
       sentiment."
Both he and Mac dropped back a bit and chatted for a short
while, leaving Seth and Kimmi to wander a short distance ahead
making it hard to hear their exchange aside from the tones of
their voices drifting behind as she talked about spending time
in cemeteries doing charcoal shadings of different headstones or
macabre art. Finally the group came to a halt. "We're here."
Upon reaching the supposed haunted site in question, the group
approached a large weather worn headstone. It was simple with
little to no embellishments, all the words upon it's surface
were worn beyond recognition aside from the singular surname
       'Yeshe' meaning wisdom.
"Before we get started," Mac said holding out an her index
finger in waiting to the others. She then lifted the colorful
over-sized can she had yet to open above her head, before
pulling out a set of keys from a clip at her side and puncturing
a small hole in it's base before cracking the can open overhead,
short-gunning it's contents. She chugged the sweetened nectar
her throat bobbing as she swallowed a small bit of it streamed
down her chin. Syllus watched silently giving a tilt of his head
and an approving nod of understanding before raising the last of
his own can in respect to the birthday girl who clearly needed
it to get through this night. Mac took a deep breath before
swiping at her mouth with the back of her head followed by a
sigh and nod. "Better, lets do this."
Syllus nodded again. "I'm a bit amateur when it comes to things
like seances but I think we can make this work if we all work
together." The large imposing man plopped down onto the course
yellowing grass in front of the grave and began digging around
in his backpack. He pulled out a few items, incense, more prayer
beads and a few other things that looked monk like to those who
lacked in knowledge. "Why don't we all have a seat before we get
started?" He said patting the grass next to him, waiting for Mac
to sit down on his left waiting for everyone else to be seated
too as he continued setting up. "Don't worry, I promise I don't
bite." He remarked before Mac had smirked and begrudgingly
settled in along side him, their knees nearly brushing.
Syllys had already ran the seance portion past with Kimmi when
she had suggested this double date, so she had a vague idea of
what Syllus had brought, though the understanding of it escaped
her. She was mostly just here to have fun despite finding
       cemeteries creepy, and to hopefully set Mac up on a date;
something Mac clearly didn't know about, which Syllus picked up
on almost immediately... but true to form he seemed unbothered
by much of anything and continued on. It was clear he at the
very least enjoyed Mac's company and made earnest attempts to
converse and include her as he went, even going so far as to
flirt a bit; something Seth probably wasn't used to being
around. Especially so since Mac avoided talking about
relationships with him due to their own weird history, but this
was sort of what he signed up for when suggesting this night in
       the first place.

Seth listened to Syllus as the man finally seemed to start
opening up. It was refreshing seeing Mac actually treat someone
other than him or Kimmi like a fellow human as well. All in all,
it seemed like the night was getting off to the perfect start.
Despite the excellent start, Seth couldn't quite shake the
feeling that something was off. Maybe it was something he ate
earlier? Considering he lived off of food that almost
exclusively came from ready bars or machines, Seth was no
stranger to anomalies in his gut but this was different, almost
as if something was gnawing on him from inside.
In short order, the seance didn't offer much reprieve from the
growing despair in Seth's mind. "Oh, we're like, doing an actual
ritual." Seth said with a thin veil of cool. He was always one
to favor and argue to the tune of factual, grounded ideas. While
Seth had a habit of keeping his mind and feelings close to the
earth, he still couldn't shake an intense reliance on
superstition. It was one of the things he wouldn't easily admit
to anyone but his doubts would begin to manifest as physical
behavior, his speech being especially traitorous to his attempts
to retain a cool appearing demeanor.
"Anyway..." Seth chuckled as he followed suit with Mac and
Syllus as he, too, began downing the rest of his Cookoo Lookoo.
Suddenly, a sassy yet restrained slap hit him in the chest.
[color=pink]"Hey! Take it easy. You still have to drive me home
after this. Remember?" Kimmi's voice chastised, abruptly
shattering the rhythm Seth had taken with his chugging, causing
the fizzy liquid to trap itself in his throat. Suddenly, the
bubbles began to burn in Seth's chest, causing him to stifle his
drinking and choke, coughing with snot and tears rolling down
       his face.

       ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
[color=black][font=georgia]Mac snickered to herself as she
watched Seth sputter, there was a small part of her that was
       enjoying watching him being chastised and squirm a bit;
especially when Mac would normally be the first to check on him.
Maybe she babied him a bit too much sometimes... Either way she
was glad she had walked by herself to get here and wasn't
beholden to someone else's whims after the fact. Independence
and freedom were always something she was keen on maintaining,
which is probably the only reason she and Seth had lasted as
long as they had in the grander scheme of things, little more
than glorified friends with benefits, even after the fact their
relationship hadn't changed all that much aside from the fact
they no longer lived together or had sex.
Maybe that's what she needed to look for? A friend with benefits
situation, absolutely casual no strings attached. (Someone's
afraid of commitment and hasn't figured that out yet...) She
pondered as she continued watching Syllus as he set up the
ritual. Her eyes following his movement's as her mind wandered
about, not necessarily to the scene playing out before her. The
man placed a few sticks of incense out and about in front of the
large crypt door, lighting them with a lighter he pulled from
his side pocket of his large jeans before he sat back down cross
legged, like a large denim pretzel.
She was already beginning to relax thanks to the impromptu gift
exchange she had slammed prior to the short walk so she had less
reservations about this whole 'seance' business. Where Seth was
more tethered to reality when it came to more spiritual or
supernatural aspects, Mac had always taken a more open minded
approach which contrasted her natural skepticism about most
everything else in the world; she claimed that anomalies were
more interesting than most people, maybe because they made more
sense to her than people did...
"For the seance to begin I'll need everyone to make contact."
Syllus said with a small lopsided smile as he offered his hand
out to Mac who in her heightened state indulged her greater
curiosity, slipping her hand into his own going along with the
evening more readily than one would have assumed, curiosity
getting the better of her. She tucked a few strands of hair
behind her ear smiling at Syllus before glancing over to Kimmi
and Seth. [color=green]"Common don't chicken out now, this was
       your idea."

Seth flinched at the mention of chickening out. "Tch. As if I'd
be the one to derail the festivities." He said sarcastically as
he sat in the circle opposite of Mac. Not that he was overly
concerned with touching Mac, but Seth knew well enough not to
try to hold his ex's hand while in the same circle with his
current girlfriend. Instead, he opted to grab Syllus' massive
palm, dwarfing his own in the process.
Finally, with everyone in position, things were ready to get
underway. Seth locked eyes with Mac before the chanting started,
betraying his own desire to hide his worry before his eyes
snapped into their normal, cool look, as if he suddenly stopped
caring. The truth couldn't be further from reality though as,
instead of his eyes dilating, he began to sweat with the cold
heat of anxiety. "Hopefully we don't pick up any curses." Seth
chuckled trying to sound less stressed when in reality, his
words only further revealed his worry.
"Anyway, what do we do besides holding hands?" He asked as he
shook Kimmi and Syllus' hands with his own. "I doubt we're just
meant to sit around and wait... or are we?" His line of
questioning began to border on panic before Syllus began
chanting a low and foreign sounding string of words. The
rhythmic beat of his bass filled voice almost brought Seth's
anxiety down to zero. Say what you want about the guy, but he
had a calming aura about him.

astral projection. All one has to do is close their eyes and
take slow, deep breaths on my count. 1....2....3...." Syllus
began leading the meditation, something he was well versed in
since he instructed yoga on the side. "Next I want you all to
picture in your minds eye, that which you wish to receive,
clarity, enlightenment, closure, from. It can be anything, but
it's imperative that you keep your mind focused on the singular
question so as not to cause your mind to wander. As you do this

He watched as each of the participants began closing their eyes,
some sneaking peaks around the circle or adjusting their posture
to straighten up to be more serious about the matter while
others, like Kimmi who seemed to be giving this experience her
all. Then there was Seth who seemed much more hesitant in his
body language but begrudgingly snapped his eyes shut and waited
for the event to begin. "Now I'll give everyone a moment to
organize their thoughts and get the question they want to ask
settled. Then I'll chime the bell to begin and there will be no

[color=black][font=georgia]As Syllus explained Mac simply stuck
out her tongue at Seth despite his worried puppy dog eyes,
before closing her own eyes and wiggling her body slightly and
settling into place, drawing a deep breath. She didn't have many
successful experiences with Yoga, often times having fallen
asleep during any instruction she had gone to in the past, but
this time was more promising. Outside of all the stuffiness of a
studio surrounded by women gossiping like clucking hens and far
from the weird athletic leisure wear and sweaty bodies, now they
were surrounded by the cool of the night air. The smell of earth
and decaying leaves, the cold of stone seemed to radiate,
stealing the heat of their bodies as the outlines of their
breath became as thick as the clouds of incense that rose up
around them, rolling in like a fog.
One singular question? That's all, how hard could that be? But
that couldn't be farther from the truth.. Mac's mind began
swirling like a torrent of different things she could use this
so called 'enlightenment' on. Why was she rejected from art
school again? Should she dye her hair? What should she make for
dinner later this week? Did she remember to turn on the TV for
Zeke's before leaving the house? Did she work tomorrow at 1pm or
4pm? How did she end up spending her birthday on a blind double
date with her ex and his new girlfriend? Before she could settle
on a focused thought Syllus' chimed the first bell as thick fog
rolled in around them so thick it would hard to even see who was
       in front of you.
Why am I such a mess?
