[center][RECAP]
The day of the work party was finally upon them as the shadows
of cringe loomed over them. It wasn't just a shift gathering but
one including the whole team, including many of the colorful
characters that typically avoided coming to the store during
public hours. While it wasn't a huge store by any means, the Pit
Stop still had more than a handful of employees that helped keep
it going. It was a tribute to either the stubbornness of man, or
his ability to overcome all challenges, regardless, the conduit
of strangeness that was the Pit Stop had become home to many of
those outside of the norm of society.
As the group locked up for the evening, a feat only made
possible than an earlier than normal closing time. A sign hung
limply over the door, clearly penned by a hasty hand. "Closed
for Employee Enrichment".
"I wonder who'll pass out first." Seth whispered into Mac's ear
while flipping his finger between Heidi and her father. It was
well known that Heidi and her father had a tense relationship.
Whether it was the expectations they possessed of one another or
something else more personal, the pair would always over drink
at these things and end up "reconciling" and crying on each
other's shoulders. You would think this would resolve their
issues and help finally mend their relationship but, as fate
would have it, they always got too drunk to remember opening up
to one another and the long, wicked cycle would start again for
the next few months. And so on, and so on.
Mac snorted into her glass of beer, the burst of air nearly
sending the foam over the surface of the high top table they had
set up shop at to people watch. "Mr. H has been the one to break
first the last two times, my money is on Heidi tonight. No way
it'll be a hat-trick." Mac said with a confident smirk before
knocking back the second half of her first beer. It was as if
she were hurrying through the first drink, like ripping off a
bandaid in order to deal with the tedium of tonight's greater
social interactions at large.
Idly Mac began doodling with a black pen on the corner margin of
her napkin as she often did. Even at her register she could be
seen doodling on scraps of receipt paper or anything she could
find laying around. Back when they were dating she'd sometimes
doodle on a stray bill or two that ended up in the drawers when
counting down at the end of the night or handed out when giving
back change, a sort of scavenger hunt to see the bills circle
back to The Pit Stop but there hadn't been any new ones found in
a while, like she had stopped the game all together.

Seth gave Mac his undivided attention while she spoke about her
prediction. She was one of the few people capable of holding
Seth's genuine attention. "Nah, he's going down again because
he's a big softy under all that... sternness." Mac and Seth gave
a cold shiver as they recalled the often unsettling nature of
Mr. Hawthorne's wicked stare. Whenever he came around the store
it was always the tensest the place ever became, even more so
than when the city inspector did his "random" building safety
checks.
While they all just worked for him, the employees held either
strange reverence for him, or absolute dread. In Mac and Seth's
case, they were just the lowest ones on the totem pole, literal
grunts that just showed up to get their paycheck and do as
little to earn it as possible. They could both be hard workers
when they decided the occasion called for it (Mostly when there
is a good band playing at the 'Park') but they never felt the
desire to test if the intensity Mr. H gave off was defensive or
offensive. Besides, the old man wasn't all too bad if you manage
to get on his good side. As it turns out, the path of least
resistance to getting on Mr. H's good side was simply working
for him for long enough.
Just as the pair were beginning to debate their theories, Seth
saw something that made him choke on his swig of beer. It was
that little grey guy from the trash bin the other day. The
strange little gremlin was standing nonchalantly in the corner
of the bar's pool table area, scarcely covered in shadows. At
first, his beady black eyes seemed to be taking in the whole of
the bar. It was clear nobody had noticed him yet as the reaction
wouldn't go unnoticed.
"Mac." Seth frantically whispered as he tapped her shoulder and
pointed at the little man. "It's the little guy from the other
day! In the trash." His mouth hung in amazement for a moment.
"Ya know. He did that sick a$$ flip!" At this point, Seth's
excitement was building, bringing him to his feet and sending
his eyes into an accusatory stare.

[color=black][font=georgia] "You, you okay?" Mac said giving
Seth a slap on the back as he nearly choked on his beer and
began sputtering whispering frantically as he looked past her
over her shoulder tapping as he motioned towards the corner.
Following his gaze her head swiveled to the alleged trash man as
he jumped to his feet and pointed. Her head bobbed and craned
through the crowd trying to catch a glimpse on Seth's claims.
"With the little pants?" She nearly bowled into him turning to
follow as the shape of a small figure began weaving through the
crowd. "There! That way!" She said with a laugh, catching Seth
by the collar and all but dragging him along as they haphazardly
stumbled through the crowd into the brewery's larger hall that
sometimes hosted events or music. Seth and Mac were familiar
with the venue having spent plenty of drunken nights bobbing
along in the crowds, though Mac seemed to stay in more often
than not these days, so it had been a while.
"That way, lets split up and head him off." Why? Who knows other
than curiosity and the thrill of it. Mac was always one to jump
to chase after spontaneity when the opportunity arose. Mac laugh
chasing off through the side door that opened near the smoking
section out back, her arms wildly motioning for Seth to run out
the other door and circle around to meet her in the alley in
hopes of finding this mysterious bald garbage man with a
penchant for back flips. Mac never even gave Seth an moment to
speak up before she dashed off through the door, her laughter
and a flash of silvery hair trailing behind her.

"Ch! Yeah!" Seth roared in agreement as the pair tore off at
full sprints. Their quarry was adept at bobbing and weaving,
seemingly reacting with super human reflexes to obstacles in his
way. The pair in pursuit were just as tightly wound as they
continued pursuing like predators closing in on prey. Finally,
as Seth and Mac split off, Seth found himself blasting through
the small kitchen in the back. Thankfully it wasn't a weekend,
so the place was empty, but had there been anyone back there,
they would have had a heart attack.
As Seth tucked and weaved through the cold steel room, he
finally found the back door, labeled clearly with a sign reading
EXIT. Just as he pushed on the door and flung his body outside,
he turned to meet where he expected the little gremlin to be
headed, tailed by Mac. Sure enough, first the little gremlin
spun out into the alley then Mac, in hot pursuit, cackling
maniacally. "Holy sh!t!" Seth cried out with laughter as he
hunkered himself real low, ready to use his body as a net to
capture the little weirdo.
Suddenly, as Seth read the gremlin's movements and dove to grab
hold of him. The little guy seemed to double his speed, stepping
to the side and tucking his back downward, snapping his body
into a limbo position. The little guy's pants shrieked and
hissed as they met the concrete with such speed, blowing apart
as he showed no signs of slowing down. "What the!?" Seth called
out as the gremlin shifted once more, delivering a picture
perfect flying kick to Seth's back, sending the man soaring
across the alley and directly into Mac's full sprint. Before
either of them could react, Seth and Mac stopped each other's
momentum with an uproarious thud.

[color=black][font=georgia]WHAM! Mac's forehead collided
squarely with Seth's own before knocking her back on her a$$.
"Ow, ow, ow." Mac hissed under her breath, wincing as she
squinted to look around. The sound of small foot steps
disappeared into the distance, fading into the soundscapes of
the cool city night. Groaning, Mac opened her eyes trying to
re-orientate herself and failing as she reached out to steady
herself on Seth's shoulder as his features slowly began to cycle
back into view; long hair that always seemed to effortless,
thick long lashes that would make any girl in her right mind
jealous. That aggravating lopsided smirk he always had plastered
to his face. The proximity to him like this was almost more
painful than the impact itself, making her recoil slightly,
giving him a gentle nudge out of her sphere. Shakily she rose to
her feet, still reaching out to offer a him a hand up. "Lil'
fuvker gave us the slip.." Mac grumbled but gave a small shake
of her head wincing again as her hand raised first to her temple
before reaching to pinch between her eyes. "Ugh, I'm gonna need
a stronger drink after that."

Seth's whole world slowed down for a moment, knocking him
senseless, which, strangely enough, wasn't the first time he
felt that way when he was this close to Mac. Without much
control over what he could think and do, Seth chuckled
absentmindedly as his eyes formed pained crescents that seemed
like they were staring past Mac during the brief moment they
locked eyes. "Dude was like master splinter." He said, still
chuckling, as he grabbed Mac's hand. "Sorry for the impact
there, did I leave a shiner?" It was clear Seth was oblivious as
to the reason why Mac shoved him, but it didn't diminish the
concern he had, even if he was still chuckling about the
absurdity of the whole situation at large.
Seth inspected Mac's face when she finally turned to look at him
again. At first, everything seemed fine, the left side of her
face had a small smudge from the dirty ground but nothing bad.
Then Seth let out a gasp as Mac continued turning her face. A
significantly long cut formed above her right eye brow, sending
a webby trail of blood reaching down her face. "Oh Sh!t!" Seth
shrieked as he snatched her hand. "Let's get you inside." He
said urgently as he turned to the door. At that exact moment, as
Seth was turning his body, an uncontrollable urge came over him
to make a gross joke.
"Since you went last time, it's my turn to play doctor with
you." He could barely get the words out before exploding into
laughter. While he was bent on celebrating his remarkably
oblivious joke, he was still guided by his need to actually help
Mac, getting her set on a metal table inside the kitchen with a
wet, clean rag held to staunch the bleeding while he snooped
around, looking for the first aid kit.

[color=black][font=georgia]Mac had hardly noticed until he said
something about it, finally registering the warmth of a trickle
of blood on her forehead as it hit the cold of the night air.
Everything after happened faster than Mac could register as Seth
lead her back inside before she could withdraw her hand from his
own or protest. Just as he turned to head back in side Mac
caught that signature mischievous glint in his eyes followed by
his, typical brand of humor laced with an ill timed joke.
Typical. She scoffed shaking her head as she gave a disapproving
groan, though just this once she'd let it slide. Scowling all
the while her eyes continued shooting him a scolding look, her
eyebrows tightly knitting together as they often did when she
pouted or huffed about something. It was a face she had made
lots of times over the years and was easy to recognize. Though
her expression was reminiscent of the one white, little, angry
raccoon that sometimes like to hang out by the dumpster out by
the skate park, jokingly nicknamed "Cam"; feisty and loud, but
oddly skittish and aloof. Not unlike Mac herself.
Seth all but lifted her atop the cool stainless steel table her
expression only softening slightly, followed by a hiss as he
touched the rag to her forehead causing her to finally meet his
gaze again. "I have notes. You'd look more believable in a nurse
outfit and you could really work on your bedside manner." Mac
said sarcastically, a strained smile on her face as she held the
rag to her head as he began scrounging around to find a first
aid kit. "Sorry about the detour..." She added her voice
softening as she apologized, eyes dropping into her lap
alongside the rag as her fingers curled around it. "Plan was
half baked, guess I reaped what I sow." Mac said readily taking
the blame, something that was few and far between for their past
shenanigans seeing as Seth contained enough charisma to float
them through most situations. In the past she had sometimes
relied on him a bit too heavily to get her out of messes, but it
was something she had been working on recently. Baby steps.

Seth paused for a moment at Mac's candid apology. Genuinely
confused by her sudden shift in behavior, he simply chuckled.
"It's no worries, dude. Seriously, I'd rather be here patching
you up than watching the sh!t show out there unfolding." He gave
a small smirk as he haphazardly stuck a few bandages to Mac's
head. A sort of apologetic look washed over his face as he
finished working on her wound. "We should totally get our story
straight." He said with a now awkward chuckle. "Nobody will ever
believe we were chasing a creepy little hobbit and I just
happened to be karate kicked into you."
Seth laughed again, this time more genuinely before the torrent
of humor erupted, leaving him wheezing and gently rapping his
fist on the metallic table Mac sat on. "What a f#cking employee
enrichment night, huh?" There was genuine delight in his eyes as
the entirety of their situation sank in. Seth was always one to
appreciate the humor in things, even when he shouldn't really be
laughing about it. This moment was no exception, there was a
smile threatening to cross his face with each passing second.
"Look, sorry about busting up your head." Seth interjected
suddenly. "I mean, it's probably nothing compared to some of the
stuff you get hit with in the roller dome but still, I am
sorry." Something about hurting Mac really bothered him,
settling down into his core. Even if it was an accident, he
never really believed in violence, unless it was cool like in
action movies. "If you want, I can take your shift next Friday,
as a way to make it up at least." Seth stuffed his hands into
his pockets as he admired his less than professional patch job
on Mac's head.
"And you should totally go to the doctor after this. That
doesn't look like it's gonna heal right...."

[color=black][font=georgia]Mac chortled at the mention or
enrichment. "Pfft, like we're zoo animals." She chuckled
slightly her smile only faltering when Seth continued to
apologize, like this wasn't all her fault that they were in this
mess. If anything it was karma for him having got burned by her
cigarette in the alley a few days back or really anytime she'd
gotten him into a similarly chaotic scenario. "If anything just
call it retribution." Mac said dryly, waving off Seth's concerns
dismissively before hopping down. "I'll be fine. Nothing a
strong drink and some painkillers can't fix, besides scars are
supposed to be sexy."
Mac teased but after hearing Seth's offer to cover her shift she
smirk faltered, letting her mouth get ahead of her head she
blurted out something she shouldn't. "Friday, isn't that your
date night with Kimmi?" Fvck. Why the hell would she bring that
up at a time like this, maybe she did get a concussion. Silent
cursing herself Mac tried to change the subject hoping to breeze
past it all. "Actually, don't worry about it. I need the hours
anyways." She tried to salvage the interaction. "Saving up for a
concert that's coming up." She lied, turning to look back out
the kitchen door window, feigning interest in the happenings.
She could hear the mixed emotions of various voices sounding
from the other side wondering if limping back to the gathering
was less of a risk than staying put.
