After receiving the third degree from nearly everyone upon his
uncharacteristic company he had brought back to the Nymph's song
in the form of not only the enemy Knights Commander but also
their spymaster as well. Unrest didn't cover what had played out
over the Yggdromos' most uncomfortable dinner party in recent
history; yet he had accomplished getting Guild Master Jaryn
there as well as both Cirice Varia of the inquisition and the
notorious Onyx ranked Black Hand Vilzen to go along without so
much as asking their permissions. Instead all he could hope for
was their forgivness in such a seemingly reckless endeavor to
begin with. Had he been playing the fool so long that people had
forgotten he wasn't one to being with?
Surely Damian's snide remarks would of cut him deeper than any
of the cutlery laid out anyway but all the same it would of been
a welcomed sting by comparison to navigating this alone. Mal
felt his confidence slipping, little more than a mask reflecting
his good intentions now after feeling so shaken before searching
out Auron. He felt guilt writhing around inside of him, black
and viscus like creatures trying to escape his rib cage. Every
condemning word that fell from Auron's mouth just drove the
point home with more force than he could stomach. He pushed bits
of the meal around his plate in a vain attempt to take a
reprieve from the conversation from time to time although he had
all but lost his appetite in the process.
He had been a successful agent for the guild, all be it his
reasoning for doing so to start was less than altruistic by any
stretch. Yet here he was desperately clinging to an attempt to
try and do the right thing. Meliora and Auron were just as much
failed by the systems in place as any one person within his
clan, and yet he felt the judgmental stares of his peers and
those he looked up to alike baring down on his efforts. There
was no winning in this scenario he had put himself into and he
wasn't yet sure what the outcome would look like.
Ultimately with some stoke of luck Mal would probably offer up a
similar solution to the nature of Vilzen and Cirice's
partnership, though the thought of lording over anyone is such a
way felt vile even if it was out of protection... but that
didn't account for Auron. Becoming an inquisitor to protect
Meliora who was willing to make an effort to show her efforts in
distancing herself from the Knights was one thing. Auron on the
other hand was an apathetic mess at the moment and while Mal
understood and wanted to give him time, others much like Jaryn
had said would be less patient. They would want their pound of
flesh for all the misdeeds he had done and even Mal wasn't
capable of wiping that slate clean for him.
As Mal carried the sleeping Meliora in his arms Auron a few
paces in front of him as they made their way back towards the
rooms he had set up. Mal watched, passing a few others in the
hall. Their eyes averting or darting away as he went about their
business, surely to have their own closed discussions and
opinions on what had played out that evening some of those
undoubtedly questioning why their leader would put them in such
a dangerous position. He should of handled this better, Damian
was better at organizing these sort of facets... Mal was always
putting his feelings ahead of his brain, making an absolute mess
of things, just like he had done up north to start the chain of
       events that played out.
He never should of went to see Occtavia again.
He watched a Auron disappeared behind the neighboring door
making comments about making sure to keep it down, Mal entered
the room he had set up for Meli. It was a modest space with a
large bed they often rented out of beastfolk and giantkin types,
though she felt so much smaller in his arms as she slept.
Exhausted from the weeks events he had put her through, not only
taking care of him up north when he had become to unravel but
helping traverse to find Auron as well as meeting everyone here
and agreeing to Jaryn's demands. She never once complained
despite it all, he felt guilty for it especially so since he was
leaving so soon. She had left her entire life behind for him,
how could he ever properly thank her for such sacrifice.
Folding the soft blankets around her gently he traced along her
cheek, tucking in a stray strand of dark hair behind her ear.
She instinctively nuzzled into his touch as he sat on the beds
edge, watching her for what could of been minutes or hours. She
trusted him and he wanted to prove that her trust wasn't
misplaced. He wanted to be the Malekith Silverfang she believed
in even if he wasn't always sure how to be. For her he would
       try.
He knew sleep would evade him that night, he was prepared for
its toll as he idly spun the ring gifted to him from the fellow
hunter who's mother lived in the valley just outside of Newark.
For such a useful tool he had used it for such frivolous
ventures in the past. Negating the exhaustion of staying out too
late drinking or for sex. He himself certainly was no hero, the
halls here were a constant reminder of that for better or worse.
Further proof could be found in his inability to even bring
Meliora into his old room, its blood stained floorboards and
clawed bed posts reminders of how he was capable of hurting
those he loved. Even now he wanted to selfishly keep that from
her, though he had no doubt that in time the truth would come
out. No one could keep secrets forever, but for now he wasn't
ready to address the wound Lana had left within him. Meliora was
everything Lana wasn't; it wasn't fair to compare the two. Meli
was strong, resilient, straightforward and sure of what it was
she wanted. It made the idea of saying goodbye even for a short
time almost too painful to bare especially leaving her in an
foreign place surrounded by mostly strangers and her diminished
brother to care for; he knew just how scary that could be...
His memories of Lorelai and his own experiences felt all the
more fresh in his mind considering his destination tomorrow. Mal
remembered how welcoming everyone had been upon their arrival at
Castle Sol how things finally felt like they had found somewhere
safe. Mal silently promised himself that this would be different
for the siblings than his own tragic tale. He may not be able to
rewrite the past but he would do everything within his power to
       keep events from repeating themselves.
With a heavy sigh he stood up from her side, needing to get some
air and clear his head after the chaos of the evening. Anything
to unravel the tangled mess within his mind. Without a second
thought Mal opened the window swinging it aside to gaze out for
a moment, reflecting on the moon overhead as it hung suspended
in a velvety sea of stars, not so much as a cloud in sight.
Where it's light once gave him a familiar comfort, its glow gave
him only unease at what was to come. Looming overhead as if
taunting him. I won't let you have them. He thought in silent
       defiance.
Using the vines that grew up the large stone works of the outer
fort Mal effortlessly scaled to the neighboring rooms window,
Auron's room resting on the other side. Perching on the stoop he
swung the panes open and let himself in near silence until he
spoke. "Hey." He called out as he stepped into the room,
announcing himself. His voice sounded tired, older some how
after the days ordeal as if it had stretched him thin. "It's
time you an I had a talk."

Every action felt heavy, like Auron's own blood was filled with
lead. It was painful holding someone's gaze as well. Was it
guilt? no, why would that start now? Then it must be something
else, something poisonous. Auron felt the walls closing in again
as he found himself in the room Mal had directed him to. The
spiral was quickly interrupted by a presence arriving.
"Well, well. Time for the warden to interrogate the prisoner
already? My dinner hasn't even settled." Auron's voice was soft
but laced with bitterness. It was all he could muster as far as
emotions were concerned. "Talking hurts right now, can we do
something else instead?" A snide excuse, but it wasn't entirely
       a lie either.
It was futile to try and resist Mal's wishes, Auron knew this,
yet he was compelled to try and derail as much as he could, it
was the only control he had left. After some time of pause, Mal
refused to leave, giving Auron no other choice but to engage
him. "Fine, what's on your mind?" While it was an invitation,
there was nothing hospitable in Auron's tone. It was clear he
wanted no part in the conversation that was nearing now.

Mal didn't scold him or try to redirect Auron's feelings on the
matter, instead letting him make his remarks letting the cuts
land willing to take the punches he wanted to dole out, physical
or otherwise. It was clear he wasn't going to turn away no
matter how much Auron lashed out in his frustration and
confusion. Mal couldn't fault him for it. He understood.
Mal felt a sick feeling rise up from the pit of his stomach
twisting like a knife hoping that Auron would at least hear him
out after having come all this way, even if he didn't want to
talk to him ever again. "You're upset with me." He started with
the obvious, the words tightening as they caught in his throat
forcing him to pull the rest from his chest like barbed wire. "I
broadsided you with all this sh!t and then asked you to come
along for the ride. That wasn't entirely fair of me. I needed
you to hear it all from me. I needed you to know that despite
having not a single thing to gain from fighting to keep you safe
from the guild, from the knights, from anyone who wants to
control you and your powers; putting an effective target on my
back from every side, I'm willing to risk everything I do have
       to try and protect you."
Mal was reminded of the times he had gotten sappy along side
Auron in the past after long nights drinking. This night his
words were similar but they didn't come from a place of lapsed
judgment in the form of a drink, they came from the heart. "I am
so sorry for how this is all playing out. I know you're confused
and feel lost due to what happened with you and Darcy and all
the stuff you've endured at the hands of the knights. I'm sure
so much doesn't make sense and you want answers. Maybe I can
help you find the answers you want, if you could just try to
show people that there is something left in there to protect and
preserve, I will do everything in my power to help you rekindle
your spark even if that means finding a new way to do it. Just
please, trust my love for you as a brother. Let me help you, I
can't bare the thought of losing you too..." Silence settled
over his final words a calm plea but Mal knew he would need more
than promises to convince Auron and he was prepared to live up
to the words he spoke to prove their worth in actions.

Auron stared into Mal's eyes as he delivered his speech. There
was a look of sheer disinterest spread over his face even after
the room fell silent. Auron's head turned, to gaze dejectedly
out of the window. The moon was large tonight, Auron could feel
the increased pressure settling over the earth beneath it. In a
way, it was comforting, this smothering weight, it reminded him
that he was still subject to some of the rules of this world.
"Fine, fine." Auron sighed as he waved his hand callously. "I'll
play ball if it keeps you from getting more sensitive on me, you
d@mned nerd." He rolled his eyes and rolled over, offering only
his back to Mal. "It's a weird thing, going from so much power
to nothing at all. It's like being drunk on the best booze for
so long you can't remember what being sober is even like."
Auron's pale hand reached up to the glowing sphere in the sky,
basking in its reflected light for a moment before it fell to
       his side again.
Auron gave another sigh, as his head rolled backward once more,
landing his gaze on Mal once more. "I'll be your weird surrogate
sibling from now on, if that's what you need." The words tasted
like bile from a different mouth than his own. It was so hard to
be nice when he didn't want to be. "And I promise to try to do
good acts along the way, as it suits me at least." For the first
time since all of this began, Auron gave his signature lop sided
smile while he dropped his head all the way down the edge of the
       bed.
If Mal wanted a brother, Auron thought to himself, then he might
       as well have one.

"Alright, alright, I'm done being all sappy and sh!t for now."
Mal relented with a soft chuckle. Despite the sharpness of
Auron's words it seemed as though their tone was lost on him,
rolling off like raindrops down the back of a well oiled jacket.
In that moment as a dopey grin settled across Mal's features he
restrained himself from embracing his moody counter part into a
bone crushing hug wanting to interject that power much like
booze was better shared but he hoped that in time, perhaps Auron
would learn that lesson of his own accord. Mal could only hold
       his hand so much and was reminded that he didn't need coddling;
there was just some things he would have to figure out on his
own, but, for all the rest Mal silently promised to do his best
to be there for him for as long as he needed him to be, just as
he had promised to do in Newark.
It was funny how Auron's last words proved the two of them were
more alike than it seemed at times like this. For all the good
Mal had ever done in the world it was often driven by motives of
his own, helping out people so they would aid, respect, or trust
him. Whatever it was at the time that he had needed to secure
his survival. These acts not always done with the purest of
intentions as someone like Auron might wrongly assume. There was
a darkness within everyone after all... but in time as Mal
continued to find new reasons for why he would help others it
had become habit. Actions that could gift him back some of the
control he had once lost in the past while growing up. A way to
protect and preserve the innocence the world had tried to wring
out of him by defending it in others.
It was a selfishly-selfless act but Mal was better for it. He
had his sister's teaching to thank for that, she always had been
the kind one while he had always been more of a brute. This was
the best way he could honor her teachings, to live on trying to
share it with others, even when lesser men would of given up. He
couldn't afford to give up, not now. He had too much to lose.
People to protect, a world to change. That much was crystal
       clear to him now.
       This was just the start.
Without saying another word Mal flopped down onto the bed
parallel to Auron as he stared up at the beams that ran along
the ceiling overhead, stirring his hand in the air for a moment.
The landscape around them changing as the architecture overhead
began to shift into a deep hue of blue. Brilliant colors coming
to life in the form of ribbons reaching out and dancing around
the room in an aurora crafted from his memory of the time they
stopped on the mountainside. The cool breeze that blew in from
the cracked window almost made it believable for a moment as the
two sat in the silent company of one another.
Mal seemed lost in it for a moment before reaching to retrieve
something from a pocket at his thigh. "Here." He said shoving
what appeared to be a small scrap of fabric into Auron's hand.
"For Darcy." He explained. Upon closer inspection, it was a
small sweater of sorts and a matching hand knit cap with ear
holes for the hairless kitten. It had a small pocket on the
belly with an embroidered 'D' on it. One could at most slip
their thumb into it as it held a small singular treat for the
wearer in question. "So she doesn't get cold. I made sure it was
stretchy so there is room to grow." He said, a strange gut
instinct he had followed upon making it considering how much
Eerie had changed in the last year he believed it possible for
Darcy too considering. It was a small gesture that was easy to
over look but as always Mal just had his own way of going about
things all the same; thoughtful gifts always having been a love
language he held on to even after becoming undead. "You two
should get some rest." He said finally rising to his feet, not
wanting to bombard Auron with anymore idle chats for the night
       though he'd like to.

Auron didn't object as Mal began to leave, he instead gave an
indignant stare to the little sweater set on his lap. "There's
no way-" Before he could finish his words, Auron felt a stirring
at his chest. The tiny, frail visage of the newly shrank Darcy
made its way out of the inside of his robe. The little
creature's pudgy legs carried it cautiously to the tiny piece of
fabric and gave it an intrigued sniff.
There was no helping it, Darcy loved her gift. Auron was
horrible in many, differing ways but the one thing in all of
this world he held any sort of sympathy or care for, was his
little shadow. With eyes frozen from the perfect cuteness
unfurling before him, Auron quietly withdrew his prior comment
before it had completed. Instead, he careful fit the snug little
       garment over Darcy's ears.
For a second, Auron waited to hear Darcy say something,
anything, but in the end, she quietly purred and rolled herself
back into a pink little croissant. In moments, the kitten was
fast asleep and Auron shot Mal a gaze of pure wonder. "How'd you
know to do that?" He asked, unsure of even what it was he wanted
       to know.

Mal raised his eyebrows slightly, pausing in response to Auron's
question as he considered his words for a moment longer before
he finally cracked a small smile. With a softened expression he
stood there his head tilting to the side as he gazed upon the
pair, all but budding newborns in Mal's eyes. "I try to practice
understanding what people need without having to be told.." His
words may be simple but the weight behind them was significant.
"I never had the luxury to have that for myself; it's nice to
live vicariously though others sometimes. Gives me some control
back over my life." Without having to control others. He kept
his final thoughts to himself simply opting to end on a less
chastising note, knowing Auron was already struggling as it was.
There was no need to pile it on.
"Anyway, I'm out. If you could, help out with some chores around
here till I get back. Even if it's just a few dishes, everyone
else round here is expected to help out from time to time. All
in all it'd probably go a long way for some of the others to
start tolerating you." Mal half teased, though he wasn't
expecting much, he knew the others would be watching Auron
closely. As they should. Mal knew just how dangerous his
potential was, even having seen it first hand.
"Keep you head on sharp, yeah?" He said hopping back on the
window ledge before turning to look back over his shoulder
cupping both hands around his mouth before whisper shouting and
signally with heart shaped hands dramatically. "Goodniiiiiiight
Daaarcy." The tiny wrinkled pile of pink velvet rose it's
beanied head. Darcy's eyes barely opened as she let out a
singular squeaky mew before settling right back to sleep curled
up on Auron as if acknowledging Mal's goodbye. "Sleep tight
       knowing I'm lookin' out."

       [size=11pt]-----------------------------
The man who was once known as the Rat King was a master of
subterfuge. There existed no lock he couldn't pick, no treasure
he couldn't steal, and, most certainly, no mark he couldn't
surprise. It was in the dead of night that he moved, searching
for his next job, the next thing that would test his skills.
Like a flash he bounded over the edges of the garden and up the
wall to a window that was chracked open.
The scent of halfling grass stung the nose as The Rat King
winced at its burn. While the scent made him flinch, knowing his
target was already indisposed only made his job easier. Swiftly,
he climbed to the sill with the precision of a machine and, in
short order, he was perched on it, peering into the small room
       within.
There sat Mal, on the end of a bed that housed a sleeping demon.
Vilzen was sharp but he wasn't a fool, he knew sneaking up on
someone he had no intel on was a bad move, especially one that
was from the abyss. With a small snort, the shadowy watcher made
a phony bird call, something he often did when getting the drop
on Mal so as not to trigger his danger sense.
As Mal turned his attention to the window, a dark hand
materialized as if from the night itself. Soon, a whole body
formed with it, the slender shape of Vilzen made itself present
as he mad himself known. "Hey kid." He started. "That was one
hell of an awful dinner, bud. Wanna talk about some things?" The
tone he held was patronizing not out of a place of superiority
or arrogance but out of a place of parental guidance.

Hearing the familiar call Mal rose to his feet from his vigil at
the end of the bed. He still felt very much on edge but watching
over Meliora's sleeping form, with each rise and fall of her
breath, put him at east. Something he was eternally grateful for
after this grueling day. Mal gawfed at Vilzen's words of choice.
"Man, tch." He said shaking his head as she stuffed his hands
down into his pockets. "You really have a way of it sometimes
dont'cha?" Mal knew it was a warranted talk considering.
Especially so with dragging Vilzen and Cirice into the matter as
well without any heads up. Not like Mal had much ability to plan
this sh!t through anyway. "All things considered it was
practically a miracle things had went as smoothly as they did."
Mal admitted with a small shrug as he paced the length of the
bed. "And it was about as smooth as a bladeling's
backside....ugh." Amidst his stalking, Mal always kept himself
between Vilzen and Meliora, whether that was a conscious effort
or not was hard to determine.
One of his hands combed back his hair ruffling it out of his
face. Mal looked tired, more tired than Vilzen had ever seen him
at any rate. Dark circles were forming beneath his eyes which
were focused as if locked in, lacking their usually shine. "If
you're holding your breath for me to give you a perfect answer
on how to fix things, you'll be waiting a long time I fear." He
admitted candidly his gaze flickering to Vilzen but never
settling as if unwilling to meet his gaze for fear of what he'd
find within. Disappointment? Disdain? Whatever could be found
Mal was already feeling bad enough about how things had played
out, he didn't need him to pile it on too. "Bright side, that's
gotta have made the top three awkward dinner's in all of
Yggdromos so there's that. Whoo history in the making..." He
said making mock finger guns dejectedly.

Vilzen eyed Mal up and down as he sat himself in a small desk
chair attached to a little table nearing the corner of the room.
"I didn't come here for answers, kid." He said laying his head
back and shutting his eyes. "I know you don't know what you're
doing." The drow's perfect lips curled into a smile. He wasn't
here to gather explanations or anything like that.
Vilzen lifted his blackened arm over his head as if reaching for
the ceiling. Instead of trying to grasp anything, he studied the
arm instead. Stark blackness replaced the cool purple tone of
his skin. A uniform darkness consumed the entirety of his
forearm and hand separated by a shattered looking border of
broken blood vessels that pooled in the abyss.
"Believe it or not." Vilzen spoke while still focusing on his
hand. "I've got lots of experience with things like that." His
arm finally fell downward, stopping with a finger pointing at
the sleeping form of Meliora. "True demons are a very specific
rarity around these parts. I don't suppose you know much about
them or how they operate, do you?" The man's lips nearly curved
into a cat like grin, fully sure of his expertise in this
