A helping hand to the newcomers.

I suggest the placement of a large box somewhere in the vicinity
of world spawn which would be marked "Free Stuff - Please be
considerate of Others".
Our more fortunate and established members of the Realm might
voluntarily stock said chest with a few stone implements, food,
torches, or other misc items which newcomers might find useful.

Other non newcomers may arrive and take food and torches.
Also we do supply wooden tools.

The idea is a good one! I think there are few boxes around, or
at least there were at one time, within some of the towns, or by
peoples' houses. Spawn ha a few chests partially hidden within
the spawn area that have been filled with wooden items. But once
a person has joined, they probably don't go back in there. That
was more useful when we were whitelisted.
TW shared a good point. But as much of the server is, its all
about the Honor System. If need something, go ahead and take
what you need. But by right, if you've taken from a chest, at
some point when you have excess, you should share as well.
Otherwise the system won't work! And anything we can do to help
new members will give them a much better feeling towards us and
our server! So in the long run, this will benefit all of us on
the server and our community as a whole!
One concern I had, was that guests could take from chests. And
with the way guests come and go, that could take away from its
benefit. However, I tested it, and found guests cannot take
items or open the chest. But once they become members, they will
be able to access them!
I have already placed a double chest outside of spawn for items
where members can donate items to it for new members. Please
don't place your unwanted garbage in that one! Make sure its
something they can use that will be helpful to them as they
start out.
I would also suggest making other ones in or outside of towns,
or in other obvious places, where people can access them. Keep
in mind, within towns protected under residence, unless you have
your residence permissions set to 'container true', noone will
be able to access it. So in that case, an obvious area outside
the main gates of your town might be better!
