h i s t o r y:
Born to a beautiful, loving family was this steadily sheltered
tom, blessed with a pair of caring Riverclan parents, both
equally strong warriors in the clan, very well known, and
appreciated by their peers, their litter being very well
anticipated. This child was brought into the world alongside a
duo of siblings, a pair of females, his sisters, however, being
the middle child he wasn't very well noticed during childhood,
with a sickly younger sister and a stronger older one, he was
always seen as just 'the brother' with no recognizable
achievements to add to his subtle name. Rainkit.
He was regularly cast off to the sides when his mother was no
longer staying in the nursery with her kits. He was usually
always glued to her side while his bold older sister, Cloudkit,
would go off and bully the kits that would snicker at their
sister Honeykit's weak ways, however when her trio of kittens
were no longer nursing she decided to return back to her
building warrior duties, being very connected to her clan,
although she did genuinely love her kits with all her heart,
always stopping by to check on them and keep them out of
trouble, knowing Cloudkit's tendency to sneak off. Rainkit's
kithood was the hardest part of his life, as when his mother
simply upped and left him, he had no one to push his love onto,
having to confide in himself, and his sisters for companionship,
an unusually hard transition for him to adjust to.
Rainkit found himself becoming immensely lonely, as he only had
his sisters as friends, every attempt at making a new
acquaintance always blowing up in his face, and resulting in
Cloudkit having to jump to her brother's immediate aid,
something which should have affected or embarrassed him, but
didn't, it simply made him recognize how uselessly unwanted he
was. He couldn't even play fight with his siblings or the other
kits, his body so bony and small that it made cats whisper
terrible things about him, their painful gossip hitting Rainkit
hard when he found out from the other, bullying kits:
"He'll make a terrible warrior. He won't even last past
apprenticeship."
Mommy, why do they say these things? Rainkit would ask, but his
mother would have no answer, she could only comfort him with her
lulling coos, but it was never enough, Rainkit's heart was
already turning.
Becoming black.
****
Rainkit promised himself he wouldn't cry, but he did anyway, and
by the time he was formally introduced to Riverclan's medicine
cat by his worrying mother, he knew that the darkened corner of
the nursery must have been drenched with his tears. Rainkit's
mother secretly took time out of her day to plead with the
medicine cat, Mintfrost, to give a tour of the medicine den to
her son, knowing that he was probably too fragile for the
hardships that came along with battle, and being a warrior,
hoping he could show Mintfrost that he could amount to becoming
her apprentice, and actually be of use and importance to the
clan.
Indeed he was.
Mintfrost was impressed by how easily and fluently Rainkit could
recite the names of the herbs she had shown him after only
hearing them once, while also being able to give their uses and
side-effects with only a few mistakes. His spotless memory
served him well as he inspected the medicine den, and had
Mintfrost sure of who her apprentice would be when she asked him
to take on the role, his heart soaring silently as he accepted
the task, his head finally held high for once as he left the den
in honor.
But having a great memory didn't always mean the best for this
tom.
Those terrible, painful nursery days would forever burn
themselves into the walls of Rainkit's brain.
Forever darken a child who could have been happy.
Forever maim a child that could have been normal.
****
It soon came time for the trio of siblings to take on their
apprentice names, Rainkit especially eager as he waited, his
anticipation rivaling that of his sister Cloudkit's, knowing he
would amaze all of those other bullying kits with his new title.
"Rainkit, the young tom who had been doubted against by most of
the clan, has shown us that he was always worthy of the respect
he didn't receive. Today, I, leader of Riverclan, name you the
honorary medicine cat apprentice, Rainpaw. May Mintfrost pass on
all of her bountiful knowledge onto you."
The new apprentice swelled with pride as he saw the shocked
looks on the faces of his sisters, his father, those other
annoying kits and the adults that had gossiped over his blatant
lack of strength. He beamed with a certain happiness and love
that only grew when he saw his mother's knowing smile, and
assuring nod, his expression melting into one of gratitude as he
took his place beside Mintfrost. A place he had rightfully
earned.
