Bill couldn't help but notice the shift in Bev's demeanor at the
mention of someone sitting out of the ferris wheel. Her smile
was fading. That upset him. He didn't like it when she was
unhappy. He didn't like it when any of his friends were unhappy.
He squeezed her hand again, nodding at her next comment. "Yeah.
I'm s-sure you're right," he said quickly. "Maybe Richie will be
t-throwing up by then and Eddie will s-s-stay back just to say
I-I told you so," he suggested with a shrug. He knew Bev hated
the idea of everyone splitting up just as much as he did, but
she seemed to take the small moments of loneliness more
personally than he did. He was really mostly upset at the Losers
disbanding for a long time, them splitting up for good and
parting ways forever. The trivial stuff didn't bother him as
much. He was used to the cliques. He thought that was just how
friendships tended to work. Beverly, on the other hand, truly
felt horrible every time someone had to sit out of something.
She took the whole thing more seriously than he did and it was
one of the things he most admired about her.
Richie and Eddie arrived, eventually directing the blame for
their tardiness toward Stan. Stan didn't fight it. Bill didn't
expect him to. Stan was an overall honest person and mature
beyond his years. Beyond all their years, really. Then Ben
arrived and immediately, Bill felt weird. Beverly's face lit up
at the sight of the boy as he jogged over to the rest of them,
out of breath by the time he arrived. He was glad she was
smiling so brightly again, but he didn't know how to not feel
uncomfortable with this. He was doing his best. He knew Bev
wouldn't betray him, that she could have Ben whenever she wanted
but she didn't. Still. He was probably overthinking it. He
smiled at Ben, allowing him and Beverly to have one of their
little conversations. Bill didn't know what they were talking
about half the time -- which was not reassuring given that she
was his girlfriend and all -- but they always seemed pretty
happy. He wasn't about to fuck that up just because he's a
little jealous.
He glanced over at Richie when he greeted Ben, slanting his lip
and rolling his eyes when Richie mocked his stutter. He should
have been used to it by now. Hell, he was used to it by now. But
that didn't mean that it bothered him any less than it used to.
He'd spent years trying to improve his stutter or get rid of it
entirely. Nothing seemed to be working. He figures, one day,
he'll go to a speech therapist to fix the problem or something.
For now he'd just deal. He wasn't very happy with how often
Richie pokes fun at this, but he could deal with it. Richie
didn't mean anything by it. It would be much more hurtful if it
was Bowers or something. "N-no worries, Ben," he finally said,
despite Ben obviously being wrapped up in his small talk with
Beverly.
"W-w-we were trying to f-figure out what to do f-first," Bill
said when Richie asked if they could go ahead and enter the
fair. "We were th-th-thinking of saving the ferris wheel f-for
last. S-s-so we can watch the f-fireworks," he added. He didn't
want to make an executive decision for the whole group without
hearing anyone out first. He knew Richie would have suggestions.
Whether they were good or not had yet to be seen. "We wanna
g-g-go see Mike and his animals sometime too," he said.

Eddie didn't like how oddly quiet Richie was starting to get.
Usually he made more comments. He'd say something wildly
inappropriate or run around in circles while hurling insults or
just be generally more annoying. But the more Eddie talked about
AIDS and his mom and all the stuff she'd taught him, the more
uncharacteristically quiet he became. Almost like he was...
actually... controlling what he was saying? Eddie didn't
understand it. Richie never did that. It made him a little
uncomfortable basically winning this argument. He was so used to
Richie getting the last word. He'd grown to expect it. It was
comfortable. But now he was sorta shrugging off Eddie's comments
and going back to arguing with Stan about how often he throws
up. He didn't know how to take it. He supposed he should have
been happy about it, but he wasn't. Then he commented quickly on
his mom again and Eddie knew everything was okay. "Shut up,
Richie," he said.
They finally reached Bill and Bev, immediately jumping in and
blaming Stan for them being late. Stan didn't dispute anything.
He couldn't, really. Eddie knew that. He just wanted to make
sure everyone else knew he was to blame. For once, it wasn't
Richie's fault. That was weird. Almost everything was Richie's
fault. But, if they would have just listened to Richie to begin
with, they would have been here sooner and his shoes wouldn't be
as dirty and his legs wouldn't be so tired. Eddie couldn't
drive. He wasn't allowed. But he rode with Richie all around
Derry. He didn't get why Stan was opposed.
Eddie quirked an eyebrow when Beverly and Ben started talking.
Mentioning someone named Danny? Donny? He didn't know and he
didn't care so much. But he did wanna know why Beverly, who was
dating Bill, was asking Ben, who obviously had a crush on her,
about another guy. There's no way she could be interested in
that many men, right? Or that that many men could be interested
in her? Eddie certainly didn't get it. He loved Bev. She was a
wonderful friend and he enjoyed her company. But why did every
man in Derry want to kiss her all the time? She's great, but
Eddie didn't understand the appeal. Of course, he didn't
understand the appeal of a lot of different women. Maybe there
really was something wrong with him. He glanced over to Richie
while Ben and Bev talked. "Who's Danny?" he mouthed silently.
Eddie's eyes lit up and he suddenly got excited when Richie
suggested that they go ahead and enter the fair. He really
wanted an ice cream cone. Maybe not first thing, but at some
point. And he wanted to kick Richie's ass at some of the fair
games. Or try to, anyway. Eddie would be lying if he said he
thought he'd actually beat Richie at a lot of them.
Richie lived his life by pointless games. It's the reason
Eddie's never once beaten him at Street Fighter. "Wait, are you
guys actually going on the ferris wheel? Cause those things go
up really high and if the safety rails give out and you fall all
that distance it'll kill you," he said. "And I brought ear plugs
because fireworks can cause hearing damage," he added. "Have you
guys eaten dinner yet? I'm hungry but I don't know if we should
eat first thing and then go on rides. We might get sick," he
tacked on at the last second.

He tilted his head when he noted how things seemed to get weird
between Richie and Eddie. And not the normal Oh no, Richie's
touching his best friend too much and it's starting to feel less
platonic by the second weird. Richie got a little quiet. He
didn't even think of a witty comeback. All the talk of AIDS and
Sonia was obviously bothering him. Stan understood why. Sonia
was full of shit and everyone seemed to know it except for
Eddie. Richie probably had some less-than-kind thoughts about
the woman and her opinion on AIDS. He also probably wanted to
say something about his impressive grade-point average and his
parents being doctors. But he kept his mouth shut for the first
time in a long time. Weird. Stanley rolled his eyes when Richie,
once again, told him he was wrong. That he only threw up the one
time. There was no sense in arguing with him. It wasn't like
Richie actually forgot anything. He was just denying if for the
sake of saving his ego. Stan figured he'd let him have this one,
so he didn't respond to the remark. But he was there all the
times Richie threw up. When Eddie wasn't paying attention and
left him behind, Stan didn't. But if this helped Richie feel a
little more masculine, who was he hurting?
If Stan could have walked away from those idiots entirely, he
would have. The comments about Sonia's sex life were getting
more and more uncomfortable to hear by the second. But he
couldn't really go anywhere. He couldn't wait to actually enter
the fair and get some separation. Stan didn't necessarily like
being lonely, but he didn't mind having time to himself every
now and then. Especially after just spending time with these two
idiots. He'd be more than content just letting everyone go off
on their own, or in their own little cliques, while he plays the
fish bowl game for a little bit. He'd played it every year for
the past three years and never once won. He was convinced he
simply wasn't capable, that it was a sign from God that his dad
was right about him not being allowed to have pets. But he tried
every year and he was planning on trying again.
He looked between Bev and Bill when Ben finally arrived,
effectively pulling the couple apart. He could see what was
happening there. Bill probably could too. Poor guy. He had no
idea what Ben and Beverly talked about. He wasn't sure he really
wanted to find out. He pursed his lips at Richie's comments
about returning to Derry High. Stan had a few thoughts about
that place, most of them negative. He also wasn't ready to give
up and summer and move into fall. Most of September was going to
be very, very difficult for him with Yom Kippur on the way. He
didn't want to think too much about the future right now. He
just wanted to focus on the fair for the time being. He shook
his head when Eddie asked if they were hungry. "Richie will
definitely get sick," he said.

Ben felt bad being the last one there. He didn't mean to hold
everyone up and make them wait on him. Though, by the looks of
it, Richie, Eddie, and Stan hadn't been there too long either.
That made him feel a little bit better. He smiled brightly when
Bev's face lit up. She was pretty happy to greet him, which made
him feel all warm and fuzzy. He loved his relationship with Bev,
even if it wasn't quite where he wanted it to be right now. She
was happy with Bill and she was still an active part of his
life, so that's all he could really ask for without being cruel
and selfish. Besides, she might be with Bill for now, but Ben
knew that he and Bev had an odd and undeniable connection. They
practically spoke their own secret language half the time. She
didn't have that with Bill.
He shrugged and grinned when Beverly asked about Danny, his
favorite New Kids on the Block member. He was embarrassed to
admit it, but he still had that poster in his locker, even if it
wasn't presented proudly anymore like it was in middle school.
"Oh, well, you know," he said casually. "He's... uh... he's
Hangin' Tough," he said, referencing to a NKOTB song that wasn't
super obvious. He didn't want all the guys knowing that he still
listened to boy bands. He got teased enough for literally
everything else.
He smiled when Richie patted him on the back, simply nodding
when Richie said that Bill and Bev wouldn't yell at him for
being late. He knew that. Bev would never chew him out for
something like that. Bill might. He certainly cared a lot about
punctuality. But Bev wouldn't let him. He took a few minutes to
catch his breath, noting that it was starting to get easier.
Working out really has helped improve his life, and not just
because it helped him control his weight. He stood up straight
after a few moments, nodding when Richie said they should go
ahead and enter the fair. Eddie suggested they eat first and Ben
laughed when Stan said Richie would puke. "Maybe we should go
ahead and find Mike. Then go on a ride or something. Or We could
play darts?" he suggested.

Beverly's smile returned as she laughed at Bill
prediction of Richie throwing up and Eddie staying behind to
help even out the group for the ferris wheel. It wasn't a
complete fix, but it was definitely something she could see
happening. Richie had a way of throwing up almost every time
they went to the fair. Either he'd get too excited, or take too
many chances on rides that spun. Last year he had eaten a funnel
cake and taffy rope before immediately going on the
tilt-a-whirl, which was a disaster. There was no doubt in her
mind that this year wouldn't be much different. It was no secret
that Richie had the most sensitive stomach out of any of them.
Before big tests at school he would sometimes throw up. It's
just how Richie was.
When Ben showed up, it didn't take long for Richie to start
cracking jokes again, making fun of Bill's stutter, which earned
a look of disappointment from Bev. She knew Richie was only
dicking around, and she knew he had been doing it for years, but
she also knew it had to bother Bill at least a little. It
bothered her. No one ever said anything though, so Bev didn't
either. Thankfully, no one said anything about her Danny comment
to Ben either even though the other Losers were obviously
confused. She laughed as Ben's response. "That's good to hear,"
she said, ignoring the lost look on the other Losers' faces. She
was glad to have someone she could share inside jokes with, and
it was even more amusing to do it and tease Ben in front of the
others. Hopefully it helped Ben feel a little more included and
less alone.
Richie asked if they could hurry up and go inside the fair,
mentioning how they'd all have to be going back to Derry High
soon. The others didn't look so thrilled thinking about summer
being over soon, but Beverly didn't completely mind it. More
time away from her father and more of an excuse to hang out with
the Losers was fine with her, even if it meant dealing with
homework, tests, and Greta. They still had run into Henry and
his gang plenty over the summer, so really, what was the
difference? The part that bothered her the most was what came
after school was over, but she was done thinking about goodbyes
and splitting up for now.
Bill talked about their idea for saving the ferris wheel for
last to see the fireworks, and Eddie, unsurprisingly, began to
go off on a spiel about the safety of ferris wheels, giving
Beverly the impression that Eddie would not be joining them on
the wheel, therefore, neither would Richie. Eddie then did a
one-eighty, which was also something very common for him, and
asked if anyone else was hungry before backtracking and
mentioning getting sick. "Oh, Richie will definitely get sick,"
she agreed with Stan. "But I think it's going to happen
regardless," she added.
Ben mentioned going to see Mike first, which was probably the
best idea. They needed to pick up Mike regardless, but doing it
first would make the most sense. They didn't want to leave Mike
out. "I'm sure Mike's been waiting awhile for us, so we probably
should go see him first and meet the animals," she said. "Then I
guess we could always split into groups if we all want to do
different things," she suggested.

Richie raised a brow when Bev and Ben started to talk in
that weird language of theirs, mentioning some guy named Danny.
It wasn't the first time he had heard one of them bring up that
name, and Ben's response was similar to stuff he had said in the
past. If Richie's memory served him right, it had something to
do with a band Ben and Bev both listened to. How lame. Eddie
asked him silently who Danny was and Richie shrugged before
making some inappropriate hand gestures and nodding towards Ben,
insinuating that it was someone Ben got friendly with even
though he was pretty sure he knew the truth. If Beverly and Ben
wanted to flirt, that was fine, but he wished they could go do
it somewhere else, and especially not in front of Bill. Perhaps
he was wrong about the whole thing, but it was apparent Ben had
been carrying a torch for Beverly since he had shown up, and
Beverly had quickly grown close with him. If he had to guess, he
could see a possibility of them becoming a thing in the future.
Maybe he was wrong though - Bill and Bev seemed to be doing just
fine.
Eddie started to talk about the dangers of ferries wheels, and
Richie rolled his eyes. He had been expecting this at some point
in the night, and he already prepared himself for ditching the
ferris wheel tonight. He supposed he and Eddie could view the
fireworks elsewhere... alone. Richie swallowed. Maybe he should
convince Stan to come with them. Actually, it would be better in
they didn't go on the ferris wheel, because they were built for
two and he and Eddie riding the ferris wheel together to see the
fireworks filled Richie with anxiety. Not going on meant they
could stay around people or bring someone else with them. It was
a much better option.
Richie pulled himself out of his thoughts when Eddie mentioned
being hungry and asking if anyone else wanted to eat before, of
course, the fuckers had to start talking about how he was going
to get sick. He groaned. "Do you shitheads have nothing else to
talk about? I'm not going to fucking throw up!" he insisted,
grabbing Eddie's shoulder. "Come on, Eddie, I'll grab you a cone
and then I'll kick your ass at every game here," he challenged
the other boy. "That goes for you too, Stan," he said, looking
over his shoulder at Stanley and grinning. Richie lived games,
which was apparent, but fair games gave him more of a chance to
show off and win some prizes. He wasn't going to miss out on any
of that, and Eddie was always an easy target to beat.
Ben mentioned getting Mike, to which Beverly agreed, talking
about rides and fair games as well before Beverly reminded them
that they could all always split up if needed to. It was
probably hard for all seven of them to stick together the whole
time when they all would more than likely want to do different
things at some point. "Well lets get a move on then!" Richie
insisted, starting to head into the fair. "Lets grab Mike and
fucking boogie," he cheered, throwing a fist up in the
air.

Bill spent a few moments looking between Beverly and Ben. He
should have been used to this by now. They were constantly
having conversations that were practically telepathic,
communicating without really being involved with anyone else. He
liked to attribute it to a simple friendship, to Bev's constant
efforts to make sure Ben doesn't feel alone. They're totally
allowed to have a close bond. Bill had a close bond with Eddie
and Richie and Stan, since he'd known them for so long. And Bev
never seemed to worry about any of that. Of course, none of the
guys had ever shown romantic interest in Bill to make it
awkward, so it's not really the same thing. He felt awful being
uncomfortable with this whole thing. Bill and Bev had been
together for a few years and she'd never been anything but
wonderful to him. They'd never had any serious problems with
their relationship. He had no logical reason to be concerned
about anything. But the way Ben looked at Beverly always made
his skin crawl. And he knew the rest of the Losers had probably
figured it out. It was embarrassing to look like he was losing
his girlfriend in front of them. He knew both Ben and Bev meant
nothing by it, but it felt disrespectful; even a little
humiliating.
Bill was pulled out of his thoughts by Richie asking if they
could go ahead and go in, everyone else agreeing pretty quickly.
He was going to keep ignoring thinking about going back to
school, thinking about any sort of future. He wasn't perfectly
happy with every aspect of his life, but he was content enough
not to want any major changes. Everyone else also seemed to be
regretting moving forward. Of course, most of them were just
anxious about entering Derry High again, about dealing with all
the bullies and the teachers and the homework and stuff. Bill's
fear was a little more intense, but he was trying to ignore it
for the time being. Bev didn't seem to worried about going back
to school and he didn't blame her. Greta was way easier to deal
with than her father. Honestly, if Bill could find a way to keep
her from ever having to go back to the man again, he'd do it. If
he thought he could get away with sneaking her into his house,
he'd let her live with him. But that was not possible at this
point. Maybe after they graduate.
Eddie went off about ferris wheels, which was a little promising
to Bill. It meant that he was probably right about people being
willing to sit out so that no one had to ride alone. And this
way, no one would even really feel bad about it, since it was
just Eddie being Eddie. Then, almost in the same breath, Eddie
asked if people were hungry. Bill didn't want to eat until much
later in the night, because he always gets really tired after
eating. They all started poking fun at Richie again and Bill
couldn't help but laugh. "We all know you're gonna f-f-fucking
puke, Richie. Save your b-breath," he teased. Richie then
offered t buy Eddie ice cream and the group agreed to split up
for a little bit after they grabbed Mike. "S-sounds like a
plan," he said, squeezing Beverly's hand before turning around
and leading the group into the fairgrounds.

Eddie was a little frustrated when all Richie did was shrug his
shoulders, but what else could he expect. Then Richie started
making crude gestures toward Ben and Eddie wasn't entirely sure
what he was trying to say, but he didn't like it. Eddie just
rolled his eyes. He wasn't mad at Richie for making weird
statements, especially about the weird connection between Ben
and Beverly. But he still felt an eyeroll was the most
appropriate reaction to the whole thing. He wished that Ben and
Bev didn't have their stupid weird secret code that they spoke
in or whatever. He liked to be included. He didn't like
deliberately being left out of anything. He also didn't like how
obviously uncomfortable the whole thing made Bill. How could Bev
not see that it was affecting her boyfriend? Eddie couldn't
stand it when people didn't understand the effect they had on
people close to them.
Eddie was glad nobody made fun of him when he started talking
about ferris wheels. Those things were risky. Of course, being
not afraid of them would be nice, but Eddie would rather be
afraid than fall out of one of those things and break all his
bones. Or die. Or get sick or something. Besides, if his mom
knew he got on one of those things, she'd have a heart attack or
a stroke or something like that. If all of his stupid friends
wanted to take the risk, he was gonna let them. Eddie laughed
when Richie jumped to defending himself once more, stating that
he wasn't going to throw up. They all knew that was bullshit.
Eddie winced when Richie grabbed his shoulder, not expecting to
be touched again. He smiled when Richie said he'd buy him an ice
cream cone, but the smile turned into a scowl the second he said
he was going to beat Richie at all the games. "Oh, you are so
on, asshole," he said in response to the challenge. He looked
over at Stan when Richie invited him, nodding at the idea. Stan
and Richie were probably his closest friends of all of them, so
this worked out well. "Yeah, Stan, I can't wait to kick your ass
too," he said.
Eddie was a little relieved when Beverly suggested splitting up.
He wanted the group to be together, of course, but it was so
much easier when it was just him and Richie and Stan and maybe
Bill. It wasn't that he didn't love all of the Losers, but
everyone had different ideas and it was really easy for his
concerns to be drowned out by the big group. At the mention of
animals, though, he was not thrilled. "Oh, no. Those things
carry so many diseases," he said simply. "You guys do whatever
the fuck you want, but I'm not getting rabies or lyme disease or
whatever those things might be carrying around with them," he
said. He didn't want to admit it, but he was also scared of a
goat biting him or something. He looked over at Richie, who was
obviously just ready to go, throwing his fist in the air like an
actual five-year-old. Then Bill lead everyone into the fair.

Stan was happy to see that the whole group -- save for Mike --
was here and getting back to normal. Eddie was being stupid and
saying things that were either untrue or horribly exaggerated to
justify his own skittish nature. Richie was making fun of
everyone. Bill was trying to come off as someone in control of a
situation -- which he wasn't. And Bev and Ben were having their
own little conversation about some guy named Danny that no one
else seemed to know. Stan was more than content with all of
this. The familiarity of it, despite being a little on the
chaotic side, was nice for him. He didn't like for things to be
out of order and this was very, very much in order. Everyone was
acting according to their typical behavior patterns. All was
well. He felt himself relax just a bit, briefly glancing about
the Losers until everyone figured out what to do. He didn't
really have a preference in terms of the order or whether or not
they split up. He would go along with the rest of the group no
matter what they decided.
So far, the first thing that the group could all agree on was
the fact that Richie was definitely going to throw up before the
night was done. It wasn't an insulting thing, but he guessed
Richie was taking it that way. The boy was very much in denial,
which was more amusing than anything else. He ignored the
comments Eddie was making about the ferris wheel. Not only was
he wrong about just how risky the whole thing was, but he was
being a little ridiculous. And Stan knew him well enough to know
that all Richie has to do is tug on his sleeve a little bit and
Eddie will go along with it. He'll just complain the whole time.
Stan genuinely didn't care much about riding the ferris wheel.
It'd be nice, he guessed, but he'd be just as happy on the
ground, watching his friends and watching the fireworks. He'd
gladly sit out if it meant that everyone else would get a chance
to ride.
Suddenly, Richie challenged Eddie to a bunch of fair games.
After offering to buy him ice cream, of course. Then he turned
around, also issuing the challenge to Stan. Stan didn't like to
give into Richie's challenges most of the time. And he wouldn't
this time. Instead, he'd watch from afar as Richie and Eddie
bicker. "I really just want to try the fishbowl game," he
admitted. He'd play other games, sure, but that was the only one
he really cared about playing. At this point, he wasn't sure if
it was about pride or because he genuinely wanted to take home a
little goldfish. But he wasn't expecting to win anything anyway.
He rolled his eyes at both Richie and Eddie when they
essentially said they'd beat him at everything. He knew it was
true, but he wasn't four, do he didn't really care that much. He
nodded along when the group agreed to split up, but they went in
to talk to Mike first and meet his animals. He rolled his eyes
and sighed at Eddie's comments. "They wouldn't bring diseased
animals to a petting zoo," he said simply.

Ben was happy that no one made a big deal about the Danny
comments. He didn't need to hear anything from these guys today.
He just wanted to have his little chats with Beverly like he
always did. He briefly glanced at Bill, who looked a little
uncomfortable. Ben felt bad about it, really. But Beverly
obviously didn't feel for him what she felt for Bill. She could
have had him whenever but she didn't want him. So, maybe Bill's
just being ridiculous. Ben wasn't about to lose his relationship
with Beverly just because Bill was a little uncomfortable with
the whole thing. He smiled at Bev instead, shrugging his
shoulders. He was so happy to have this with her. It felt like,
despite them being surrounded by four other boys, they were the
only people around at the time. He looked at Eddie and Richie,
who were mouthing things and looked especially confused. He then
looked back to Beverly and just laughed at the whole thing.
He just listened in stunned silence as Eddie went on one of his
classic rants. It wasn't as long or extensive as a lot of the
other rants he'd gone on, but it was still ridiculous and hard
to listen to. How did this guy ever have time breathe? He
couldn't respond to any of his comments about fireworks or
ferris wheels. He didn't know how to. He didn't think Eddie was
completely correct, but he didn't know enough about it to
dispute him. Also, would it really hurt anyone if Eddie didn't
tag along for that ride? They needed an even number of people
anyway. He then changed topics very quickly, asking about food.
It was funny to hear Richie have to defend himself when people
talked about puking. He could dish it out, but he couldn't take
it. Or maybe he could and just thought this was funny. Ben
didn't know. Richie's sense of humor was a little difficult for
him to grasp sometimes.
He perked up when Bev started talking again, taking his
suggestion about finding Mike before suggesting they all split
up after going to the petting zoo. "Good idea, Beverly," he said
with a grin. He didn't need to tell her it was a good idea. She
knew. Everyone already agreed. He just wanted an excuse to
address her again, if he was being completely honest. He frowned
slightly when he saw Bill squeeze her hand, but quickly pushed
these feelings to the side. They were together. That was a
normal thing. He followed everyone into the fair.

Beverly laughed when Richie defended himself yet again
about puking, looking offended and slightly aggravated with
everyone teasing him instead of someone else. Richie always
loved making jokes, but it was always unknown how he was going
to take being teased back. He usually did better when Eddie was
the one picking on him because it just fueled the flames in
their daily arguments. When it was anyone else though, Richie
would either bite back or try to get everyone to stop. Beverly
had to admit that him getting defensive over them teasing him
just made it funnier. Richie deserved a taste of his own
medicine now and then, and she believed that Richie knew that as
well.
She couldn't feel the tension brewing between herself, Ben, and
Bill like almost everyone else could. To her, she was just
having a normal chat with Ben while holding Bill's hand. Nothing
out of the ordinary or wrong about that. She smiled when Bill
squeezed her hand after her voicing her idea about them
splitting up, and met Ben's eye when he agreed that it was a
good idea. She didn't need the appraisal from anyone, but it was
still nice to have. Everyone else seemed fine on the idea as
well, Richie insisting they get a move on after telling Eddie he
would get him ice cream, challenging both him and Stan to fair
games. Beverly was no fool to see that Richie was obviously
finding excuses to not be alone with Eddie. It was something she
caught him doing every now and again, which was silly seeing as
how he'd often sneak into Eddie's house for sleepovers
sometimes. It was painfully obvious to her that Richie had
feelings for Eddie, and as much as she wanted to say something
to him, she felt it wasn't her place. If Richie wanted her to
know, he'd tell her. The two of them were close, so she felt
like Richie not saying something meant that it needed to be left
alone.
Bill led them into the fair, going towards the petting zoo that
Eddie warned them was apparently filled with illness before Stan
tried to talk some logic into him. "There he is," Beverly said
to no one in particular, pointing to Mike who was tending to the
sheep. "Mike!" she called, waving when he turned his head and
spotted them, returning the wave.

Richie flipped Bill off for his comment about him
puking. He was getting tired of this constant, uncalled for
harassment. Sure, he had puked at the fair before, but that
doesn't mean it was a habit of his, or something that he planned
on doing again. He felt fine, therefore he would be fine, right?
There was no way he was puking tonight. He was going to make
sure that the Losers ate their words. He should have placed some
sort of bet to get them to do something incredibly embarrassing
if he won and didn't throw up. Maybe he would think of a good
bet later.
Richie immediately withdrew his hand from Eddie's shoulder after
feeling him wince at his touch. He knew it could have just been
out of surprise, but Richie was never sure. Yeah, Eddie was
kinda skittish, but there was also a chance that Eddie sometimes
genuinely didn't like Richie touching him, which was fine.
Richie wasn't an overly touchy person either. Well, except for
when it came to Eddie. He was fine with the occasional physical
affection or touch, but when it came to Eddie, he almost craved
it. Frankly, it scared the shit out of him, so he did his best
to ignore it like he did everything else. He had been thinking
for years that it would all grow easier with time, but now, as
much as it pained him to think about it, it would probably only
grow easier with distance. He hadn't said much, but all the
colleges he had been looking into were out-of-state. He planned
on leaving Derry in the dust as soon as possible. Of course, he
didn't expect to never see Eddie again. He was still one of his
best friends, but from the looks of it, adults didn't seem to
really keep in contact with the people they grew up with.
Richie pushed all those thoughts from his mind when Eddie smiled
at him after he offered to buy him ice cream, only to ruin the
smile with his challenge of kicking his ass at the fair games.
Had he of known Eddie was going to smile like that at his offer,
he would have savored it a little longer before challenging he
and Stan. Eddie seemed down for the challenge though, even
looking to Stan and betting that he could beat him as well.
Stan, on the other hand, didn't seem as interested, which was no
surprise. Apparently, he just wanted to play the fishbowl game,
of all things. "Stan, I gotta know, what's it like to have a
vagina?" he teased.
Everyone seemed to agree on Bev's plan of meeting up with Mike
before splitting up, Bill and Ben being the only ones to agree
verbally, which made everything weirder for some reason. He got
it, they both were in love with Bev. Bev was hot. Bev was the
type of girl that guys apparently dreamed of. If anything was
going to make Richie puke, it was this romantic tension caused
by this weird love triangle. If it could even be called a
triangle. Richie wasn't sure what was going on, and he didn't
feel like asking.
Eddie started to go off about the petting zoo being diseased,
and Richie groaned, Stan trying to assure him that the fair
wouldn't have sick animals in it. "Yeah, Eds, especially since
most of the animals Mike and his Grandpa brought are probably
going to get all sliced up tomorrow," Richie reminded him and
the rest of the gang, grinning.
They headed inside, Bill leading the way as they headed to the
petting zoo, Beverly calling out to Mike. Richie kept his hands
in his pockets, simply offering Mike a smile in greeting as they
entered the zoo. He looked around at all the animals Mike had
out. Sheep, cows, goats, and even chickens. Richie's smile
turned into a smirk as he bumped Eddie's shoulder. He was
definitely going to force Eddie to pet something.

Mike smiled as yet another giddy child approached him
and the sheep, eager to pet one. Almost every year his
Grandfather offered to bring some of their farm animals over to
the Derry Fair for a petting zoo. It was fun for the kids, and
it paid good money. However, it was also a little dark. All the
adults knew that their animals were raised for the butchers,
meaning that the animals that their children were so excited to
see wouldn't be sticking around much longer. It was a bit
gruesome, but as long as the children didn't know, Mike didn't
see any harm in it. The animals never seemed to mind it either,
seeing as how they got special treatment on days at the fair.
All the extra snacks and attention did them good.
"What's this ones name?" the little girl who approached Mike
asked, pointing at the nearest sheep. Mike smiled, lowering
himself down into a squat to be at a better level with the girl,
reaching out to stroke the sheep in question. Admittedly, the
sheep weren't supposed to have names. At least, that's what his
Grandfather said. All the animals that would end up at the
butcher's were supposed to remain nameless in order to not be as
attached, but Mike would be lying if he said he didn't name them
in his head anyways.
"Her name is Daisy," Mike told the girl, watching her face light
up as she gently pet the sheep's back like Mike had just been
doing.
"Hi Daisy!" said the little girl excitedly, the sheep flicking
its ear at a passing fly.
Mike chuckled. "I think she likes you," he said before the
girl's parents called to her, signalling that it was time for
her to move along. She smiled at Mike and waved before rushing
off to grab her mother's outreached hand, heading back out into
the fair. Mike stood back up and looked out into the crowd of
people for the third time that night, trying to see if he could
spot any of the Losers. He felt like they should have been there
by now, and a quick glance at his watch confirmed his
suspicions. He was sure it wouldn't take them much longer
though. They were probably just waiting on someone. If Mike had
to guess, that someone was Richie, and probably Eddie as well,
but he could have been wrong.
Mike was excited to see everyone again. Sure, they had just seen
each other not too long ago, it was summer, but tonight they
were at the fair. It was one of the last nights they had
together before school started up again. At least this year Mike
would be joining them in school. After Bowers and his gang had
graduated last year, Mike had decided that he would be just fine
in public school with his friends, and was thinking it would be
easier to convince his Grandfather of that as well. He had been
wrong, but he wore his Grandfather down eventually, and his
final year of high school was going to be his first official
year of having the "normal" school experience. He was a little
nervous, but he knew he'd be alright. Especially with the
Loser's by his side. He thankfully knew a few other kids at the
school as well, including his ex who he was still friendly with.
Really, without Bowers there, how bad could it be?
Mike went back to tending to the sheep until he heard his name
being called by a voice he couldn't mistake. He smiled and
looked up to see Beverly and and rest of the Losers approaching,
waving back at the red-haired girl. "Hey guys! Good to see you!"
he said, giving Bill a nod as an extra greeting. Bill was the
Loser he had the closest bond with. Of course, he loved the
other Losers just the same, but something about Bill just
clicked well with him. Perhaps it was because Mike greatly
admired him. Bill had the respect of all the Losers, and Mike
was no different. Bill had the heart of a true leader, plus he
was down-to-earth with a good head on his shoulders. He was
incredibly smart as well as kind, and Mike couldn't help but be
naturally drawn to him. He was the perfect friend. They all
were, in their own special ways.
"Any special plans tonight?" he asked, giving the last bit of
hay he had been holding to one of the sheep. "I hear there's
going to be fireworks tonight, so those could be fun to stick
around for," he suggested. "Of course, I'll probably have to
take all these guys back to the trailer before then," he added,
nodding towards the animals. "They don't do so great with the
loud noises. Would you all like to pet them?" he asked, stepping
aside a bit.

Bill chuckled when Richie gave him the finger. For a second,
Bill almost felt bad about attacking his friend the way he did.
Almost. This was Richie they were talking about. He dished out
insults and teased people all the time. Bill was sure he could
handle it. Still, he was getting more and more irritated by the
second. It was hilarious that he was getting all defensive,
especially given how he talks to people. He decided to call it
off. For now, anyway. Once Richie actually threw up -- which
they all knew would happen -- they could pick it back up again.
"C-c-calm down Richie. We're j-just teasing," he said with a
grin. He almost patted the boy on the shoulder, but changed his
mind after watching him and Eddie. Those two were a weird pair.
Bill couldn't help but smile back at Bev after he squeezed her
hand. He wasn't super into PDA, but he was feeling particularly
affectionate that night. Or territorial. He wasn't entirely
sure. Regardless, in the spirit of being a little more touchy
than usual, Bill leaned over and kissed her cheek as they
walked. He didn't think he was intentionally sending a message
to Ben. That would be immature. But, if Ben happened to back off
just a little bit afterward, Bill wouldn't have been
disappointed. He still felt weird. He didn't mean to feel weird.
He wasn't trying. It kinda came and went throughout the course
of their relationship. Half the time, Bill was perfectly happy
with everything and thought nothing of Beverly's attachment to
Ben. The other half, he was concerned. Jealous. He liked that
she had connections with each of the Losers, but he didn't like
that Ben was obviously still obsessed with her. That was a
normal thing to feel, right?
He was ignoring all the talk between Stan and Richie and Eddie
behind him. He knew that Eddie would get over his fear of the
animals for whatever because Richie would be a little shit until
he did. He'd annoy the kid into petting something. It worked
every time. There was no sense in trying to be logical about the
situation. Stan should have known that by this point, but he
tried anyway. Bev eventually spoke up, stating that she saw Mike
ahead. Bill smiled brightly at the sight of his friend. Mike was
someone he found himself very close to, despite him coming into
their lives a little later than the others. Mike was a very
calm, reasonable guy, someone who usually knew what he was doing
and was absolutely harmless. Bill found him easy to talk to. And
he was so thrilled that he was finally joining the rest of the
Losers at Derry High. "Good t-to see you, Mikey," he said with a
warm grin and a nod.
He slanted his lip when Mike said that he might have to miss out
on the fireworks because he'd have to help put the animals in
the trailer instead. "M-m-maybe you can catch the beginning of
the show? O-o-r the very end?" he suggested. He hated the idea
of Mike not being able to stay with them the whole night. But,
if it didn't work out, this solved the ferris wheel crisis. He
nodded in understanding when he explained that the animals
didn't do well with loud noises. "Th-th-hat makes sense," he
said plainly. Though, admittedly, he didn't know much about
animals. He knew dogs freaked out at fireworks. Why would sheep
be any different? "Sure. That'd be g-g-great. Except for Eddie.
He's a-a-a-afraid of s-scurvy or something," he said, smirking
at the boy behind him. He then looked forward. Bill wanted to
play with the goats.

Eddie laughed when Richie flipped off Bill. He was more laughing
at how personally Richie seemed to be taking all of this than
anything else. Eddie wasn't a complete idiot. He knew Richie was
a little sensitive when it came to certain topics. But he didn't
know exactly what those topics were, since his general reaction
was to make fun of everything or get defensive regardless of how
trivial something is. Eddie doubted throwing up at the fair was
something Richie was very insecure about. He laughed again when
Bill said they were just teasing. "I wasn't. Speak for yourself,
Bill," he said, smirking over at Richie.
Richie withdrew his hand pretty quickly, which was a little
weird. Eddie didn't necessarily hate being touched. He just
wasn't expecting anything else. But why wouldn't he? Past
behavior was a good predictor of future behavior. And in the
past twenty minutes, Richie had poked Eddie in the ribs, tried
to pinch his cheeks, among other little annoying touches.
Logically speaking, he shouldn't have been shocked at all that
Richie was back at it again. But Eddie wasn't exactly a creature
of logic, was he? It's not like it really mattered anyway. Eddie
couldn't be mad at Richie. He was buying him ice cream, after
all. He was also probably his closest friend despite being the
most irritating human being he'd ever met. But the ice cream was
important too.
Eddie laughed at Richie's comment about Stan. "Yeah, Stan. Does
your dad know that you finally started your period?" he added.
Was it nearly as clever as Richie's taunt? Probably not. Was it
just a play on Richie's joke? Absolutely. But Eddie wanted to be
included in making fun of Stan too. That was his best friend and
he wanted to ruin his self esteem just like Richie. Why did Stan
want to play the fishbowl game anyway? He always lost. Why did
he keep trying? And why would he even want a fish? They stink
and if you have an open wound or something while cleaning the
tank, it'll get infected. Seemed like too big of a risk to him.
"You know you're not gonna win anything, right? And if you do,
it's just a smelly, gross, probably diseased fish. You know,
carnival and fair fish aren't meant to live long and they
probably have all kinds of infections that you don't know about
and you're bringing that into your house," he said.
Eddie raised an eyebrow when Stan tried to speak logic to him
about the farm animals and scoffed when he heard Richie's groan.
"Listen, if you guys want an infection, go right ahead, but I'm
not taking any chances. Barn animals aren't exactly clean and
sanitary and where there's dirt, there's diseases," he said,
folding his arms in front of his chest as the group walked
toward the petting zoo. Eddie planned on just standing in the
back while everyone else got themselves filthy with the sheep
and the goats. He let out a frustrated sigh when Richie
mentioned the animals being slaughtered. "That doesn't matter.
Butchers just assume that you can cook out all the bacteria but
that doesn't always work and people still get sick. Anyone will
sell an animal, diseased or not, if they can make money off of
it," he argued. He didn't know if that was true, but his mom
said that animals were gross. It was why he couldn't have a pet.
He smiled when he realized that they were talking to Mike.
Honestly, the scent of animal feces was overwhelming and the
rest of his brain went out the window. "God, it smells so bad,"
he said quietly. Maybe only Richie could hear. Maybe Mike could
hear. He honestly didn't care much. He wasn't insulting Mike. He
was just stating that farm animals stunk. Which was absolutely
true. He scoffed at Bill's comment about scurvy. "Oh please, I
was talking about rabies. You can't get scurvy from petting a
sheep. Can you?"

Stan awkwardly watched as different group dynamics -- each with
some sort of romantic overtone -- emerged within the group. On
one hand, Bev, Bill, and Ben all had their little triangle. Bill
was trying to assert dominance, which was interesting,
especially since Ben wasn't making a play at Beverly or
anything. Ben was a little unnerved, like he usually was.
Beverly was clueless as to what was going on between everyone.
It all felt a little typical. Speaking of typical, Richie was
touching Eddie again, then correcting himself. Stan felt bad for
Richie, really. His feelings for Eddie were obvious, but Eddie
wasn't making it easy for him to get over it. And Richie was
trying so hard to be normal, but he kept second-guessing himself
and making things awkward. If Stan felt comfortable mediating,
he would, just so those idiots could get some sort of closure.
However, this was something he couldn't do. Besides, it wasn't
his place to meddle in either of their lives, especially when it
came to something this sensitive and personal. Stan would be
lying if he said he didn't feel a little lonely. But he knew
he'd get over it.
He rolled his eyes at Eddie's comment about beating him at
games. Yeah, that was probably going to happen. Richie was going
to beat him too. He didn't care. He didn't understand why they
cared either. Or why they expected him to give a shit. This was
typical behavior for them. Then Richie made a comment about a
vagina and Eddie joined in, mentioning his dad. He just sighed,
rolled his eyes, and looked at the ground. He didn't know how to
respond to any of this. He didn't really want to. Responding
would just keep this going. It'd give them a reason to keep
saying less-than-kind things to him. Besides, he knew they were
just teasing. He just didn't like hearing it, especially when
his father came up. Stanley knew that his father was pretty
consistently disappointed in him. He looked up when Richie
agreed with him about Mike's animals being healthy, but then
tacked on the fact that they were being slaughters. "Don't tell
me that," he said quietly. He didn't want to picture the cute
sheep he was petting being killed and harvested. Or the goat
that he laughed at being shot with one of those guns. He hated
the idea of death, but especially of an innocent animal like
that.
He shook these thoughts out of his head when Beverly said that
she saw Mike. Stan smiled and waved at his friend in response.
He always felt like he and Mike had a nice bond. They didn't
spend nearly as much time together as he did with Eddie or
Richie, but they always got along very easily. Maybe it was
because they were both inherently quiet, gentle people. Mike was
the least intimidating of the Losers -- save for Ben -- and also
among the nicest of them. He was trustworthy and honest. He
liked that. But he'd be spending the majority of the night with
Richie and Eddie, which was fine. It just meant that his nerves
were going to be fried before the fireworks. He nodded and
sighed a little when Mike said he'd probably miss the fireworks.
That meant he'd miss the ferris wheel. On one hand, it solved
the ferris wheel problem. On the other hand, it meant that he
now had to ride it. But that wasn't a bad thing, he guessed. He
nodded when Mike asked if they wanted to pet the animals,
silently making way toward a friendly-looking cow.

Ben got quiet after a few moments. There wasn't much for him to
say. He didn't have any suggestions or anything to add to the
conversation, even as the conversation split into a few
different cliques. This was a normal thing. He was used to
feeling a little left out, since everyone else knew each other
so well. And he felt like he couldn't continue to drag Beverly
away from Bill. He didn't know if he even really wanted to. If
she wanted to distance herself from her boyfriend, she would.
Instead, she was still holding Bill's hand while the two made
comments at Richie. Richie then branched off and went back to
talking with Eddie and Stan, as per usual. Ben was excited to
finally get to Mike though. When Mike showed up, either he'd
pull Bill away, meaning Ben could talk to Beverly, or Mike would
be with Ben the whole time.
He felt his stomach drop a little bit when Bill kissed Beverly's
cheek. He should have been used to this by now. They'd been
together for forever. But it still upset him just a little bit
to see them being affectionate. He wasn't sure if he felt bad
because he was jealous or because he was a little guilty. After
all, he'd been the reason Bill probably felt the need to stake
his claim. And he knew the other Losers were probably seeing it
too. He hated feeling like this, but he was terrible at hiding
his feelings. He walked behind everyone, trying to avoid making
anything any more awkward or uncomfortable than he already had.
They all followed Bill into the fair, heading toward the petting
zoo. After a few moments, Beverly called out to Mike, who then
met the Losers with a wave. Ben smiled in greeting. "Hi, Mike,"
he said, watching and letting out a silent sigh of relief when
he noted how Mike greeted Bill separately. With any luck, that
meant Mike and Bill were going to be talking more, leaving
Beverly open for Ben to chat with. But he couldn't be too sure.
He felt a knot in his stomach when Mike said he wouldn't be able
to see the fireworks, meaning he'd miss the ferris wheel. That
meant that Ben would probably end up riding with Stanely. This
wasn't a bad thing. Stan was cool and a good friend. But he'd
been hoping to ride with either Mike or Beverly. But he doubted
he'd be able to get away with taking Bev. He grinned and nodded
when Mike offered to let them pet the animals. He didn't know
what he wanted to pet first. He figured he'd see what Bev
gravitated toward and then figure it out from there.

Bevery chuckled along with Bill after Richie flipped him
off, obviously growing a bit irritated with them all, but Bev
knew that Richie was aware that it was all in good fun. Well,
sort of. Richie totally was going to puke in the fair, but if he
wanted to believe otherwise, that was up to him. "You know we
mean nothing by it, Rich," she said after Bill, Richie sticking
his tongue out like a child before Eddie started to tease
Richie.
They entered the fair, and Beverly smiled when Bill kissed her
cheek, being perhaps a bit more affectionate than he usually was
when they were in public. She didn't mind, but it did make her
wonder why he was being so affectionate for. Perhaps he was just
in a mood, or maybe it was something else. Regardless, Beverly
didn't ask, and kept her fingers intertwined with Bill's as he
lead them to Mike and the petting zoo. Behind them, Eddie was
still complaining about the animals, making up facts and talking
about disease. She knew that he was right about the animals
being dirty, but she also knew that there were porta potties
nearby for them to wash their hands in. Not that any of it
bothered her, but she knew it was more likely for them to get
sick touching the rides then it was for them to get sick from
touching the animals. She wondered what Eddie's opinions on dogs
and cats were, and figured that he probably didn't like them
either. Beverly had always wanted a dog, but her father would
never allow it.
Mike greeted them all at the entrance to the petting zoo,
feeding some of the sheep. She looked at the sheep and tried to
remember if she had ever pet one before. They had never really
gone to Mike's farm before, so she couldn't think of any other
opportunities in which he would have been able to, but they
looked soft. Mike talked about the fireworks, and mentioned that
he'd more than likely have to leave before them to put the
animals away. It didn't sound like Mike particularly minded
missing the fireworks, and if he couldn't make it and Eddie and
Richie were ditching the ferris wheel, she supposed their
previous issue of someone having to sit on the ferris wheel
alone was fixed. Still, "We'd hate for you to have to miss the
whole show, Mike," she said, nodding when Bill suggested that
maybe he could catch the very end.
Mike offered to let them pet the animals, and Beverly laughed
when Bill teased Eddie, starting to head off for the goats.
Beverly glanced at the goats before looking back to the sheep
and then to Ben who never seemed too far off. "What do you think
you're going to pet first?" she asked, picking at the lint
inside of her overalls to keep her from bringing out another
cigarette. She knew she should probably follow after Bill, but
Mike was already headed in his direction, and Beverly didn't
want Ben to feel left out of anything. She figured he could
always talk to Stan, but Stan was already so quiet and would

Richie stuck his tongue out like a child at Bill and
Beverly, chuckling to himself before Eddie had to speak up,
looking all smug. "Fuck you, man," he said to Eddie, but was
smiling nonetheless. He knew everyone was just mostly teasing.
They still had their beliefs that he was gonna puke though,
which was irritating. He wanted to talk about something else,
and he could think of a million other subjects, but thankfully,
they were starting to get a move on into the fair. He figured he
should wait to get Eddie's ice cream until after they saw Mike
and pet the animals, so he went ahead and followed after
everyone else. If anything, they could always eat ice cream
during the fireworks since they'd be more than likely staying
off the ferris wheel due to Eddie's crazy theories.
Richie laughed when Eddie shot his own retort at Stan, playing
off of Richie's previous joke. Joking at Eddie was fun, but
joking with him was pretty great too, even if it was just them
making lamer versions of each others gags. Eddie went on to talk
about carnival fish and how they, just like Mike's animals, were
probably full of diseases and shit. He probably wasn't wrong
about the fish, but he also knew that Stanley had a weird thing
about the fishbowl game every time they came to the Derry Fair.
Apparently, the guy really wanted a fish, and Richie didn't want
to crush his dreams or anything, but he doubted Rabbi Uris would
want some fish from the fair in his house. The Rabbi just always
had a tendency to be a dick like that, and he was only going to
get a lot worse. A bunch of weird Jewish holidays and traditions
were coming up, and Richie knew from being friends with Stan so
long that there was one close to the start of school at was the
worst. To his understanding, it was kinda like confessional,
which Richie's mom had started taking him too more often that
usual, so Richie could understand kinda why it sucked so much.
If there was one thing Richie hated, it was being pressured into
talking about all his insecurities to some guy that thought he
was "holier than thou." "Dude, you practically just described
your mom and you let her into you house," Richie teased Eddie,
trying to help Stan feel a bit better. "Let Stanley try to win
his own slimy thing that smells like fish."
Next thing Richie knew, they were back to talking about the
petting zoo animals and all their supposed problems, Eddie
arguing that butchers didn't care about diseased meat, which
Richie highly doubted. "Have some faith in Mike, Spaghetti. They
do their best to raise their meat right, just like me," he said,
gesturing to his crotch. A lame joke, he knew, but he'd make any
joke to try and get Eddie to shut up about illnesses and
diseases and shit.
When they finally made it to the petting zoo, Eddie already had
comments to make, saying that it smelled bad. "You probably just
smell yourself," Richie murmured to where only Eddie could hear,
greeting Mike along with everyone else. Eddie corrected a
statement Bill made about him, and Richie rolled his eyes
dramatically, poking Eddie roughly in the shoulder to try and
get him to hush. Mike didn't seem to mind though, thankfully.
Mike had always been a pretty laid-back guy, and Richie was
hoping everyone at Derry High would go easy on him. With Henry
Bowers and his crew gone, hopefully things would be better for
all of them.
Mike explained that he'd probably have to miss the fireworks,
which was unfortunate, but Richie guessed that Mike didn't care
too much. Then Mike offered for them to pet the animals, and
Richie was more alert once again, ready to get their night at
the fair officially started. "Eddie! Help me catch a chicken,"
Richie quickly requested, grabbing the other boy's wrist
lightly. "Or Stan. You have a weird thing about birds, right?"
he asked, turning his head only to see that Stan was gone and
petting a cow. Okay, guess it was just he and Eddie.

Mike shrugged when Bill suggested that maybe he could
make it to the beginning or end of the fireworks, Beverly adding
that she'd hate for him to miss out. "It's not that big of a
deal," he assured them with a smile. "My job still has to come
first, and I don't mind missing the fireworks to keep the
animals safe," he explained, patting one of the sheep on the
head. "Besides, Derry normally does stuff for Halloween, yeah? I
can see those fireworks." It really didn't bother him, but it
was touching to know that his friends cared. He was used to
missing out on certain things though. He always had a bit of
work to do.
Mike laughed when Bill said Eddie was afraid of getting scurvy,
Eddie quickly correcting him before backtracking. "Nah, these
animals are perfectly healthy. Any animals of ours that get sick
we, well..." Mike drifted off, not wanting to make things dark
or grim. He was sure the other Losers got it.
"You kill them," Richie, of course, finished for him.
"Uh, yeah," Mike confirmed, rubbing the back of his neck.
"Anyway, feel free to pet them. They're all pretty friendly,"
Mike went on, motioning towards all the animals. "The chickens
are more a fan of food than petting though," he added while the
Losers all started to navigate towards the animals that appealed
to them most. Mike decided to follow Bill over to the goats,
having to feed them more anyways. "So, how are you and Bev?" he
asked, making small talk as he grabbed some hay from one of the
nearby bins, offering some to Bill. "Have any romantic plans
tonight?" he asked with a grin and a chuckle. Bill and Bev made
a cute couple, and the pair seemed to be doing pretty well,
which was nice. The only sad thing about it was that Ben
obviously still carried feelings for Beverly, and no one was
blind enough not to see. He was sure Beverly had to know to some
degree as well.

Bill chuckled when Richie stuck his tongue out at him. He was
such a child sometimes, but the tongue thing made it so much
more obvious that he wasn't legitimately hurt or offended by the
comments. Bill was sure he was annoyed, but he was likely
playing it up at this point, which was a good thing. Immediately
after Eddie said something to Richie, the boy smiled, so that
was a good sign. He was just being dramatic for the moment.
His lips quirked upward when he saw Bev's smile, but then he
felt like a complete idiot again. He shouldn't be so worried
about keeping her around. She was obviously just as happy as he
was about their relationship. Otherwise, she would leave.
Beverly wasn't the type of person to hide how she felt for a
very long time. So he was being paranoid. He knew he was being
paranoid, but he was slowly beginning to convince himself that
he was being ridiculous. He was, in fact, almost embarrassed
that he felt the need to kiss her
just then. He felt like a spoiled child and needed to stop it.
He was better than that. Besides, Ben wasn't a cold or cruel
person. He respected their relationship, whether Bill always saw
it or not. Everything would be fine. He needed to chill out.
Speaking of people who needed to chill out, Eddie was going off
about animals again and Bill was doing his best to ignore him.
It was getting difficult though. None of his points were very
legitimate aside from animals not being squeaky clean. But they
were being raised for slaughter, so they had to be more sanitary
than Eddie was giving them credit for. But the more Stan and
Richie tried to convince the hypochondriac that he was wrong,
the more annoyed Bill was getting and the more defensive Eddie
was getting. It's been years since they all became friends. By
now they should know that Sonia's hold on her son was stronger
than any amount of logic they could throw at them.
When Mike said that it wasn't a big deal, that his job would
always come first, Bill shrugged his shoulders, but smiled back
at him. "We u-un-understand," he said with a small nod. "We'll
m-make sure the Halloween fe-festival is fun for you though," he
added quickly. He hated that Mike was always the least involved
of all of the Losers. He seemed to always have something to do
on the farm. Bill understood that his family and work was
important, he just wished they could see each other more often.
"I-it just feels like w-w-we don't see you much," he said with a
shrug. "But that'll stop w-w-when you star sc-sc-school with
us."
Bill raised an eyebrow when Eddie asked about scurvy and Mike
commented that all his animals are healthy. He knew that was the
case, so he just let Richie and Stan handle the Eddie dilemma.
He left Beverly's side to go play with the goats. There was no
sense in smothering her any more than he already had. Besides,
she obviously didn't care much about seeing the goats otherwise
she would have followed him. Mike met him in such a few moments,
feeding the goats as Bill reached down to pet them. One leaped
onto the back of a smaller one in order to get to Bill's had
easier and he laughed. He took the hay that Mike offered him,
feeding the smaller goat that currently acted as a stepping
stool for a much greedier goat. "We're fine," he said. "I
th-think we're both just feeling weird about out l-l-last summer
before w-we graduate," he said. "D-d-do you think high school
c-c-couples really stay together a-a-after they graduate?" he
asked.
He chuckled quietly at Mike's next question. "N-not really. I
think f-f-fireworks on the ferris wheel sounds p-p-pretty
romantic but th-that's it," he said. "I'd like to w-win her
something, but I don't kn-know if I can. R-riche's always been
better at those g-g-games than me anyway," he added with a
shrug. Bill wished he was a naturally more romantic person.
Beverly deserved that. He just didn't have it in him. But Ben
did, which also concerned him.

"Fuck you," he said back to Richie, trying to hide a grin. He
didn't know why, but he wanted to seem angrier than he actually
was by the comment. They were just teasing each other, after
all. And Richie was smiling, so it was all in good fun. But
Eddie had a hunch that Richie would actually end up puking by
the end of the night. He had a pretty sensitive stomach, and
that was coming from Eddie. He thought about that as they
entered the fair, suddenly a little wary of Richie eating so
early on. But, on the other hand, he was supposed to be buying
Eddie an ice cream, so he figured he'd deal.
He felt a swell of pride when Richie laughed at his joke, even
if it wasn't a good one. He was just happy to be included in
harassing Stan. Eddie legitimately didn't understand why Stanley
was so set on playing the game with the goldfish. They were
stinky and gross and not made to live for a very long time, so
he didn't get the fascination. Of course, most people loved the
idea of pets in general and Eddie didn't get that either. He was
about to say something else, something about all the toxins that
could be there if the tank wasn't perfectly sanitary, when
Richie suddenly turned on him again, defending Stan. He was
confused. And he was insulting Eddie's mother again. He sighed
dramatically and threw his hands in the air. "My mom is
infection free, I'll have you know," he said. "And my mom
doesn't smell like fish. She smells like lavender," he said,
though he wasn't entirely sure lavender was the right thing to
say. It was just the first word that popped into his head and he
wasn't about to back down. When the conversation shifted back to
the petting zoo animals, Richie made a really stupid crotch
joke, which was to be expected.
"Then we're all doomed," Stan said, voice flat.
Eddie looked at the boy and laughed at his comment, though Stan
was acting just as nonchalant as he always did about it. Richie
muttered something about Eddie smelling himself once they
entered the petting zoo. He scoffed loudly, about to say
something else before Richie poked him in the shoulder, a little
more harshly than usual. He wanted to fight more, but he was
tired and realized all at once that he could have been saying
something to potentially hurt Mike's feelings. While Mike always
seemed laid back and rarely got offended by Eddie being
difficult, he'd recently made an effort to be better about it.
He quieted himself, gritting his teeth and muttering a few
curses at Richie under his breath.
Mike said that all the animals were perfectly healthy and Eddie
raised an eyebrow at this. "You're sure?" he asked. But even if
Mike was telling the truth -- and Eddie knew he wouldn't lie to
them -- he didn't want to take any chances. Once Mike offered to
let them pet the animals, Eddie took a large step back. "You
guys have fun," he said, putting his hands up and feigning
surrender. He wouldn't be touching one of them if he could help
it. And he'd be washing his hands four times just to be on the
safe side. But then Richie grabbed his wrist, tugging him toward
the chickens. "No, I don't want to," he said, trying to pull his
wrist free from Richie's grip.

Stan swallowed at the laughter from the two boys. It wasn't like
he was legitimately hurt by their comments. He rarely ever was.
It was Richie and Eddie. They were some of the least hurtful
people in the world if you actually knew them. Richie said a lot
of inappropriate things, but he wasn't a hurtful individual. He
was just weird. But the fact that he was suddenly reminded of
his father made him feel a little queasy. If Stan were to win a
fish -- which was highly unlikely given his track record -- his
dad would definitely not allow him to bring it into their house.
And he'd be forced to think about it, to repent over it and hate
himself for it, during Rosh Hashana in just a few weeks. He was
not looking forward to that. But, it would probably be fine.
Stan wasn't going to win anything anyway.
Stan couldn't help the small smile forming on his lips when
Richie jumped on Eddie's comments about his
probably-not-future-fish. He was all for insulting Sonia. The
way she treated Eddie was cruel, and that was coming from Stan.
Plus, it pulled attention off of him and immediately made Eddie
defensive, which he appreciated. He wanted to punch Richie a lot
of times, but he really appreciated him in moments like this. He
slanted a lip at Eddie's defense and sighed. "No she doesn't,"
he said. Eddie was about to open his mouth to make some shrill
comments, but the conversation shifted back to the petting zoo,
where he ranted instead about smelly animals. Richie made a
comment about his meat and Stan couldn't help but make a comment
in response. Richie's dick jokes always made him remarkably
uncomfortable, so he liked to shut them down whenever he could.
When they were in the petting zoo, Mike offered to let everyone
pet the animals, saying that all his animals were perfectly
healthy before Richie made yet another comment about the animals
being killed. Stanley cringed at the comment. He hated thinking
about that. He genuinely loved animals -- but had a soft spot
for birds -- and hated the idea of them being raised by kind
people, just to be betrayed and murdered. Of course, that never
stopped him from eating hamburgers. He tried not to think about
it often. He was already wandering toward a cow when Richie
called out to Eddie, asking him to help him catch a chicken.
Stan shook his head. Richie then mentioned Stan's affinity for
birds and asked him to help them catch a chicken as well. "Mike
just said they didn't want to be pet," he said. He left those
two idiots alone and started petting this very nice, very
friendly cow. She was smaller than he expected, probably too
young to be butchered. At least, he hoped. Her ears flicked
every time he pet a certain spot on her neck. This was a nice
cow.

Ben stuck closer to Beverly than he probably should have once
they finally entered the petting zoo. He kept distance while
they walked over here though, so maybe the suspicion was thrown
off? Probably not. He wasn't an idiot. He knew he wasn't hiding
much of anything. But no one had ever called him out directly
for acting weird around Bev or for making Bill uncomfortable, so
maybe he was just overthinking this. He didn't know. But they
were at the petting zoo, Bill and Mike talking and Mike
admitting that he wouldn't be able to make the fireworks, no
matter what they tried. But he probably would for the Halloween
festival. That was pretty cool, he guessed.
Eddie was going off about diseased and Ben felt bad for Mike. It
must suck to hear one of your friends talk about you and your
family like you don't care about animal welfare. Ben knew this
wasn't the case. Mike was one of the kindest people he'd ever
met. He wouldn't intentionally keep sick animals around. It
wasn't in his nature. Eddie was just being annoying, as per
usual. Mike tried to shut it down and Richie eventually got
Eddie to be semi-quiet. Eddie, however, still refused to pet
anything. Everyone else, on the other hand, was planning on
enjoying themselves and playing with livestock.
Bill separated from Beverly, which made Ben smile just a little
bit. It sucked that he just left her, but this meant that
Beverly would likely come this way. Almost on cue, Bev made her
way closer to Ben, asking what he wanted to pet first. He
shrugged his shoulders. "I'm not sure," he admitted. "I want to
pet everything, but I think the sheep might be my first stop.
Unless you wanted to go pet something else," he added. "Do you
have any specific ideas?" he asked. He wanted to do whatever she
wanted to do.

Beverly was glad to see that Mike didn't seem too upset,
if upset at all, about missing the Derry Fair fireworks. He had
always been one of the more mature Losers along with Stan. Bill
was pretty mature as well, but he had his moments. Then again,
they all had their moments, seeing as how they were still just
kids. It wouldn't be too long until they would all start
becoming adults. Eddie had a little more of a wait since he was
still sixteen, but Bill would be an adult in just a few months.
Becoming adults was a weird thing to think about and imagine,
but the reminder that it would be happening soon filled Beverly
with that little sense of dread from earlier. She wondered if
she'd even be able to see all the Losers become adults. Some
might go to college before it happens.
Eddie and Richie's bickering brought Beverly back to the
present, all of them going their own ways to pet whichever
animal drew them in the most. Ben admitted that he wasn't sure
which animal he wanted to pet first, but it might be the sheep.
Beverly smiled at that, looking back at the sheep Mike had been
feeding just a moment ago. "Petting the sheep sounds nice," she
admitted. "I think I'll start there," she decided, heading over
to the closest sheep that was munching on straw, seeming
completely uninterested in Beverly and the rest of the Losers.
Carefully, she reached out and stroked it's back, surprised by
how spongy it felt. She had been expecting it to feel much
softer, like cotton candy before it got all sticky, but it was
more springy and squishy. Her smile grew, petting the sheep more
and stroking its nose, which it didn't appear to mind. She
chuckled to herself. The sheep were cute.
"Do you think Mike's grandfather keeps some of the sheep around
for wool and milk?" Bev asked Ben, trying her best not to think
about how Mike's grandfather's main source of income was selling
meats to the butcher shop. Surely not all the animals they were
petting were going to end up at the butchers, right? It felt
like a bit of a waste since all the animals they had at the fair
could be used for multiple purposes. The chickens laid eggs, the
cows, goats, and sheep gave milk. It seemed silly for Mike's
grandfather to not make total use of them.

Richie couldn't help but grin as his plan worked about
Eddie's mom, making Eddie focus on him again instead of Stanley.
He supposed if anyone deserved to have a carefree time at the
fair, it was Stan. With all that icky Jewish stuff coming up, it
was only fair that Stan enjoyed himself now, and being Stan's
best friend meant that Richie felt partially responsible for
making sure Stan enjoyed himself, so if Stan wanted to play that
fishbowl game and probably lose, he would dammit. Of course,
another thing Stan enjoyed was peace and quiet, but Richie
couldn't ensure that. Richie thrived on talking and causing a
bit of a stir. It was just what he did best, unfortunately for
Stan.
Richie laughed when Eddie tried to assure him that Sonia smelled
like lavender instead of fish, causing Richie to shake his head.
"You obviously haven't been smelling you mom where I've been
smelling her then," Richie said with a smirk. "Which is a good
thing. I'd be majorly concerned if you were smelling her down
there," he snickered. He wasn't sure if what he had heard from
other guys were true, but he figured Eddie and Stan wouldn't
know whether or not it was anyways, so what was the harm?
Stan deflected his joke about his dick, which was no surprised,
but it still made Richie shoot him a look before they entered
the petting zoo. It was a relief to Richie that all it took was
one good jab to get Eddie to stop talking shit about the petting
zoo right in front of Mike. It was one thing for Eddie to carry
on with his nonsense when they were alone, but Richie knew Mike
worked hard to raise the animals well with his granddad. He
wouldn't say it aloud, at least, not yet, but it did his heart
good to know that his future burgers were being treated so well.
Then that thought made Richie thinking about how all the animals
he would pet tonight could possibly end up on his plate in a few
weeks. He wondered if that was something Mike often thought of,
or if he was good at dissociating at this point.
Eddie, without hesitation, denied Richie's request to help him
catch a chicken, Stan piping up from where he was petting the
cow and reminding him that Mike said the chickens didn't want to
be pet. "Jokes on you, Stan, he said that they preferred being
fed rather than pet, but not that they didn't like being pet,"
Richie corrected him, lunging at a chicken in attempt to catch
it only for it to squawk, flap its wings, and scurry off with
the others. Well, he had a feeling his chicken mission wouldn't
work out after all, especially without help. "Fine, come on
Eddie, lets pet a sheep," he decided, spotting a sheep nearby.
"I'm not letting you leave until you've touched at least one
animal," he told Eddie, approaching the sheep and patting its
head. "Hey little guy, how long have you got?" Richie somewhat
teased, scratching behind the sheep's ear before it flicked
it.

Mike was touched that the Losers didn't want him missing
out on any of the excitement tonight, but he honestly wasn't too
bothered that he'd be missing out on the fireworks. Like he had
said, he could make it to the ones for Halloween, and any after
that, but it was the fair's fireworks that he always had to
skimp out on, but it was okay. He was used to it, and he didn't
feel like he was missing out on too much. As long as he got to
play a few games and ride a couple of rides with his friends,
he'd be satisfied. Seeing Richie puke would also be a plus, he
supposed. That was starting to feel almost like a tradition at
this point.
"Thanks guys," he said when Bill promised that the Halloween
festival would be fun for him. He knew that that would be the
case. He always had a good time when he was with his friends. He
did feel bad though when Bill brought up how he felt like the
Losers didn't get to see him as much. He knew that was the case,
and he had always regretted it, but he couldn't skip work. He
owed it to his Grandfather to always do the best job he could.
After all, it wasn't like his Grandfather had been expecting to
have to care for Mike, but his parent's passing hadn't been
something any of them had been counting on. He had to work hard
for his Grandfather and help him out. It's the least he could do
after all the man has done for him. "You'll definitely be seeing
me more once school starts," Mike promised, excited that he now
had an excuse to see the Losers more.
Mike chuckled when Eddie asked if he was sure that all the
animals were healthy, looking a little more certain after Mike's
previous assurance. "Positive. It's part of our daily routine to
make sure everyone is happy and healthy," Mike explained, proud
of his work. There was a reason the butcher always wanted to
buy from them instead of someone else. The Hanlon Farm
definitely had the best selection on meats in Derry. There was
no doubt about that. Not even the old rumors that used to spread
around town about Mike and his family stopped the butchers from
buying from them.
Everyone went their separate ways, and Mike watched as Bill fed
one of the goats, laughing as it jumped on another goats back.
He himself fed one of the smaller goats nearby, stroking its
neck as Bill spoke. He told Mike that he and Bev were doing
well, explaining that he was feeling a bit weird about this
being their last summer before they graduate, and asking Mike if
he thought that high school couples stay together after
graduation. Mike shrugged. "I don't see why not," he said. He
was sure that a lot of couples in town had been high school
sweethearts. But, of course, they had stayed in Derry. He wasn't
sure what Bill's plans were, but he knew Beverly wanted to move
away as soon as possible. "Even if you don't stay together as a
couple for some reason, I'm sure you'll stay friends," Mike
tried to comfort him. "I'm sure we all will, no matter where we
go," he added, feeding another goat. He wasn't completely
certain of his own words, but he'd like to believe that they
were true. Even if they all ended up moving far away from one
another, they could always write and meet up sometimes, right?
Mike nodded as Bill described he and Beverly's plans for the
evening, saying that the ferris wheel and fireworks were the
only particularly romantic things on the agenda. Bill also added
that he'd like to win Beverly something from one of the games,
but Richie was more skilled with them than he was. Mike laughed.
"Yeah, Richie does have a knack for games," he admitted,
thinking about which games he'd like to play for himself. He'd
always been pretty decent at the shooting games. "You could
always try playing the duck pond game," Mike suggested. "But I
hear it can be rigged to where you only really win small
prizes." Mike snapped his fingers when one of the goats tried
headbutting another to get extra food. "I bet Richie knows more
about which games are rigged, but I'm sure you can win Beverly
something, and if not, I'm sure she won't mind," he smiled at
his friend before having another thought. "Her, uh, dad might
not like it if she comes in with something anyways."

animals. Of course, he grew up around them, caring for them. He
was bound to know what he was doing. Still, Bill didn't like how
clunky and awkward he was around the goats. He liked goats. He
wasn't afraid of them. But it still caught him off guard every
time they did something perfectly normal. When they jumped on
each other's backs, ducked away from his hands, or something of
that nature, Bill wondered if he was doing something wrong. But
he wasn't. He new he wasn't. And if he was, Mike would have told
him. Still, there was something about how calm his friend was --
literally all the time -- that made him a little envious. Bill
himself had tried to emulate that a few times in his life, but
it wasn't as easy as he had hoped it would be.
He quickly shook these thoughts from his head when Mike
responded to him, stating that he didn't see any reason that
they wouldn't be together after graduation. He smiled at the
comment, absent-mindedly petting the nearest goat. But then, he
threw in the next little tidbit. If they broke up. That bothered
him. Not so much that Mike said it. He was just being honest and
covering all his bases. But the fact that people could imagine
the Losers without Bill and Beverly being a couple was weird to
him. He wasn't sure he could imagine it. He shrugged at that.
"Yeah, I h-h-hope you're right. I can't really imagine my
l-l-life without her, ya know?" he said casually. Then Mike
brought the whole group into things, which made Bill clinch his
teeth. He didn't want to think about that. He didn't want to
think about them leaving each other. Even if they were still
friends, he didn't want it to be different than how it was right
now. "I can't imagine m-my life without any of you g-g-guys,
really," he said.
Luckily, the subject changed before Bill had to answer any
questions that he really didn't want to answer. He didn't want
to talk about the future and everyone inevitably leaving him
behind. "I'm n-n-not sure he does much else," he joked, throwing
a sarcastic glare in Richie's direction. Mike was right. He did
have a knack for games. He had a knack for most things that
didn't matter to functioning adults. It was one of the best
things about Richie, truthfully. "I c-c-could try that, I guess.
But I don't w-w-ant to waste money just to make a fool of
m-myself," he added. Bill frowned when Mike mentioned Beverly's
father. He was right. "F-f-f-f-fuck," he said. "I d-d-didn't
even think a-about that," he admitted.
Bill hated very few people more than he hated Alvin Marsh.
Actually, he was sure there wasn't a single human being he hated
more than Beverly's father. That man made her life hell and she
was too good for that. She didn't deserve anything he did to
her, and Bill didn't even know everything that happened, he was
sure. If he could get away with killing the man, he would. If he
could get away with sneaking Bev into his house just to get her
out of there, he would. But the last thing he wanted was for her
to get hurt or in trouble because of him. "I h-h-hate that
m-man," he said. "And I h-hate having to b-b-be so careful. We
c-c-can't be a normal couple b-b-because of him," he complained.

Eddie narrowed his eyes when Richie started laughing. "What the
fuck are you laughing at? My mom doesn't smell like fish," he
argued. He let out a very, very annoyed sigh, rolling his eyes
at Richie's next comment. He didn't know why he was so obsessed
with making dirty jokes about his mind, but it was driving him
insane. "You've never been with my mom. Would you stop saying
that?" he said, much louder than he probably should have. A few
chickens ran at the sound of his voice. He wanted to make a
comment about how Richie didn't know what women smelled like
down there, because he knew Richie probably didn't know. Right?
But the fact of the matter was, Eddie had no idea how to argue
with that because he didn't know for sure that women didn't
smell like fish. But he was tired of all the insults being
hurled at his mother.
Eddie was uncharacteristically quiet for a bit, letting Mike do
his thing. He didn't always think about what he said until
someone pointed out that he was being ridiculous. This was one
of those times. It was just amazing that Richie was the one who
had to stop him from saying something inappropriate. He knew how
hard Mike worked. He just didn't particularly like or trust
animals. He had heard too many stories about diseases and the
overall unsanitary nature of them. But he could avoid touching
them without being a huge asshole about it. He nodded when Mike
confirmed that the animals were all healthy. "Well, that's good.
But I still don't want to get my hands dirty and... slobbery,"
he admitted, keeping his distance from the pens. He saw the way
the goats got their spit all over everything when people fed
them. The sheep were doing it too and Eddie didn't want that on
his hands for the rest of the evening.
As Stan and Richie dispersed, Eddie suddenly felt very left out.
He'd isolated himself and he knew that, but he still didn't like
this. He laughed when Richie lunged at a chicken, which dodged
him effortlessly and frantically ran away. "Ha! Look Richie,
another chick who runs away at the sight of you," he teased. It
was a full grown chicken and not a chick, but he was hoping the
joke still had some merit. Then Richie immediately decided to go
after the sheep instead. "Well, you're gonna be here a long
time," he said, folding his arms in front of his chest in
protest. When Richie made the joke about the sheep being
slaughtered, Eddie noticed the less-than-happy look on Stan's
face, and walked over to thump Richie on the back of the ear.
"Knock it off, jackass." He scowled at his friend, looking
between him and the sheep he was petting. The sheep did look
soft. "Well, I just hit you. Does that count as me touching an
animal?"

Stanley was a little relieved at how quickly Richie managed to
pull the attention from him and focus on Eddie once more. Or,
Eddie's mom, really. And as annoying as all the sex jokes about
Sonia could be, he was happy that he was dropped so quickly from
the conversation. He just wanted to relax, have some peace at
the fair. He wouldn't mind being by himself for a little bit if
it came to that. He did pretty well on his own for the most
part. Or, for short periods of time, anyway. But he knew better.
He knew he'd be with the Losers the whole time, namely Richie
and Eddie. There were definitely worse fates, he decided. He was
annoyed with those two idiots, but he loved them dearly.
Besides, he needed to keep them from doing something stupid.
They needed adult supervision.
He had all but zoned out when he wandered over to his little cow
friend, who was leaning into his touch and being much friendlier
than some of the other animals seemed to be. He guessed the cows
were more socialized than some of the other animals. Or maybe
this one had already eaten or something. He wasn't sure, but he
was definitely grateful that she was being so nice. He wondered
what her name was. Mike sometimes came up with names for
animals, but he knew that it probably wasn't smart to name them.
Regardless, Stan decided that she was Henrietta and there was
nothing anyone could do about it. "They're not gonna hurt you,
Henrietta, are they?" he said quietly, gently running his
fingers along her neck. "No, not you. You're too little and
special. You probably give really good milk, don't you?" he was
whispering at this point. Richie was going make fun of him
otherwise.
Richie spoke up about the chicken once again. "Richie, leave the
poor thing alone," he tried, but it was too late. He'd already
gone after the chicken, missing the thing entirely as it
scurried away from him. He sighed and rolled his eyes. He didn't
need to say told you so. He turned back to Henrietta, very happy
to have made a cow friend. Then he heard Richie and Eddie
bickering -- sorta -- again before Richie asked a sheep how much
time it had left. Stan frowned, looking over at him and
ultimately pulling away from Henrietta. He didn't think he
wanted to be there anymore. Not if all the animals were really
going to be killed so soon.

Ben grinned when Beverly agreed that the sheep sounded good,
deciding to go for them first. He was going to be staying with
her as long as she didn't object, and he didn't think she would.
Bill was busy with Mike and the goats anyway. Why he would leave
Bev by herself was a mystery to him. But, of course, they were
just very different people in general. He didn't think Bill took
his relationship with Beverly as seriously as maybe he should
have. Maybe he didn't realize just how lucky he was. He nodded
when Beverly agreed to start with the sheep, following her over
to the correct pen. "Yeah, I like sheep. They're soft and
friendly overall," he said, just sorta filling the awkward
silence as best as he could.
He smiled brightly when he saw Beverly smiling and laughing as
she pet the sheep. Ben tried to reach over the fence toward one,
but many of them seemed to be doing other things. Eventually,
one came toward him, mostly because he was wiggling his fingers.
He patted the sheep on the top of the head before picking out a
few twigs that got stuck in its wool. It sneezed. "Bless you,
buddy," he said, trying to hide how much he cringed when his
hand got covered in sheep snot. He tried to rub it off on the
sheep in question and hoped it worked. He'd have to wash his
hands extra well once they left the petting zoo.
He tilted his head at Beverly's question. "I'm sure they do. I'm
sure they keep the cows and goats and chickens too. Or, at
least, a few of them. Otherwise, it'd be a real waste, I think,"
he said, though he wasn't entirely sure. He knew that the
majority of Mike's grandfather's income was from the actual
butchering of the animals, which was unpleasant. But he couldn't
imagine keeping all this livestock and not taking advantage of
everything else they had to offer. "I think you make more money
from wool than from sheep meat anyway, but I don't know for
sure."

Beverly nodded when Ben said that he liked sheep because
they were soft and friendly. She bit her tongue to keep from
saying that it sounded like he was just describing himself. Ben
was honestly one of the nicest people she had ever met, and
while he might have not been as close to the Losers as the
others, it wasn't because he wasn't friendly. If anything, Ben
was more distant because of how shy he was, but she knew the
group would get more used to it. Hopefully he felt more welcomed
than he did when he first joined the Losers, at least. Mike was
shy as well, but he was more outspoken, and Richie seemed to
always pester Stan out of his shell.
Beverly laughed when the sheep that Ben was petting sneezed, and
she didn't fail to notice him wiping the sheep's own snot back
onto him. It was gross, but she probably would have done the
same. "I think it likes you," she decided with a chuckle, her
own sheep ducking it's head down to grab some loose hay before
she continued to gently stroke it. Nearby, Richie seemed to be
attempting to get Eddie to pet one of the sheep. She rolled her
eyes and shook her head fondly. She supposed if anyone was going
to get Eddie to pet something, it would be Richie. Then again,
if anyone was going to scare an animal away, it would also be
Richie.
Ben answered Beverly's question about the sheep, and she smiled.
It was nice to think that they kept a few of the animals around
for awhile before killing them, but like Ben said, you couldn't
be sure. Still, it was a nice thought, and it was what Beverly
wanted to believe. Realistically, she could just ask Mike
himself, but part of her didn't want to hear the answer. She
knew they were just animals and death was just a part of life,
but looking around at the animals in the petting zoo she could
tell each one had its own personality, and it saddened her to
think about their fates, even if they were just animals. She
also saw the other side, though. The animals brought meat to her
table, as well as the milk she drank, or the eggs she would
cook. She was grateful for that.
Beverly stroked the back of the sheep once more, fumbling with a
bit of its wool. It had curls, just like her. Absentmindedly,
she touched her own hair and smiled again. Her hair had started
to grow out again, but she figured she'd just have to let it be
for awhile. Each time she cut her hair it just made her father
more and more angry and clogged up her sink. Hopefully soon
she'd be out of Derry anyways and it wouldn't matter. Once she
was free, she could do whatever she pleased and never have to
look back. She just wondered what else she'd have to leave
behind, and she glanced back over at Ben. "Maybe we should see
if the others are ready to go," she suggested, patting the sheep
one last time. "I'm afraid Richie's going to get himself hurt if
we stay too much longer," she said, not knowing if she was
saying that the animals would hurt him or Eddie.

Richie only proceeded to laugh harder at Eddie's
comments about his mom, the chickens scurrying away at their
noise. He knew his jokes about Sonia annoyed the hell out of
Eddie, but they were honestly the easiest jokes for Richie.
Making rude remarks about Sonia came naturally to him, probably
as naturally as lies came to Sonia. God, he couldn't fucking
stand that woman. In middle school he couldn't see all the
things she would do, but now that he was older an wiser, her
manipulation didn't slide by him anymore. The only thing he
couldn't figure out was whether or not the pills she gave Eddie
for his conditions that he didn't even have were real or not. He
wished he had the courage to ask, but it was hard enough to see
Eddie as it was. Sonia always had something to say about the
Losers, and she definitely always had something to say about
him. Fat bitch.
Richie stood by quietly as Mike tried to reassure Eddie that the
animals were healthy. Eddie seemed somewhat more convinced, but
still insisted to stay about from the animals to keep from
getting "slobbery." "C'mon Eds, that's part of the fun!" said
Richie, giving him a light slap on the back. "You get more dirty
being a stick in the mud," he teased, grinning.
Richie went off on his attempt to catch a chicken, only to fail,
which he somewhat expected. That's why he wanted help, but Eddie
was too much of a chicken himself and Stan was, well, Stan.
Eddie cracked a joke at Richie, and Richie couldn't help but
smile. It was a dumb joke, but to be fair, so were all of his.
"Fine with me! Who needs chicks when I have your mom?" he joked
right back, managing to avoid making a heifer joke. He figured
that would be pushing things too far. "But you don't need to
feel jealous, Eddie," Richie insisted, joining his friend's side
again. "You're still the cutest," he told him, quickly pinching
his cheeks before rushing off to the sheep to avoid getting
slapped.
The sheep were soft and much more friendly than the chickens,
and even Eddie seemed curious after telling him to shut up about
them dying. He guessed that humor was a bit too grim, and he
didn't fail to notice Stanley's expression out of the corner of
his eye, making him feel a bit guilty. Eddie made another joke
at his expense, and Richie grinned. "Fuck you, Kaspbrak. I'm
only an animal in bed," he said with a wink. "And if I were an
animal anywhere else I'd be, what did you say? Slobbery?" he
asked, smirking before sticking his tongue out and moving closer
to Eddie, pretending like he was going to lick him before
grabbing his wrist. "C'mon and live a little, Eds," he said,
moving Eddie's hand closer to the sheep "I promise I'll ask for
extra sprinkles on your ice cream as a reward for you being so
brave," he teased, pressing Eddie's hand against the wool of the
sheep.

Mike could literally feel the mood between himself and
Bill shift at the mention of he and Beverly figuratively
splitting and at him insinuating the Losers might separate. He
felt like he should have been more careful with what he said.
After all, it wasn't unlike Bill to completely avoid the topic
of the Losers going their separate ways in the future. He
understood why Bill didn't like to discuss it or think about it,
but Mike saw it as a realistic possibility for the future. Most
of them had mentioned plans for the future at some point or
another, and a lot of them didn't want to stick around in Derry.
Mike didn't want to stay in Derry, and he knew good and well
that Beverly didn't either for obvious reasons. He assumed Bill
didn't either, but all of them moving to the same place after
graduation seemed... unlikely.
Bill stated that he couldn't imagine not being without them or
Beverly, and Mike offered Bill a smile that might have some off
a bit sympathetic. He wanted to ask Bill what his plans were for
the future, or where he saw he and Beverly going, but he figured
it wouldn't be a good time to do so right now. Perhaps he would
the next chance he got to speak to Bill alone. It wasn't good
for Bill to keep everything so pent-up. They didn't have much
time left to decide what they were going to do once they
graduated, and Mike had, admittedly, already started looking at
applications even though his Grandfather wanted him to stay on
the farm. He loved and appreciated his Grandfather, but he
wanted to go out and do his own thing. He had spent his whole
life in Derry, and now he was ready to go out and see the rest
of the world.
Mike changed the subject, and Bill seemed relieved. He laughed
when Bill took a dig at Richie, even throwing the other boy who
was preoccupied with Eddie a sarcastic glare. He nodded when
Bill said that he didn't want to waste money on a fair game and
not win Beverly something, and Mike felt the mood shift again at
the mention of Beverly's father. It was a similar mood to when
someone brought up Mrs Kaspbrak to Richie, which Mike could
understand. Neither parents were great, but Mike could only
imagine what Beverly's father was like since he had never met
him. Bill admitted to hating him, and Mike frowned,
understanding what little bit he could as he listened to his
friend talk about how he and Beverly couldn't be a normal couple
because of him. "Beverly deserves better. You both do," said
Mike, patting one of the goats. "Hopefully you won't have to put
up with Mr Marsh too much longer. Once Beverly is eighteen, she
can go wherever she pleases," Mike mentioned. It wasn't right
what Beverly had to put up with, and Mike couldn't wait for the
day where she could finally leave. Same went for Eddie, but Mike
wasn't sure if Eddie would even want to leave.
