Sam grinned back at Eli when the man confirmed that he
did, indeed, mean what he said about them working together. And
here he thought that this was just going to be another night of
drinking way too many sugary beverages while Connor got wasted
and Hani got all giggly and clumsy. Now not only would his night
include those things, but he also met a new friend who was super
cool and they would actually be working together... to make
songs. How neat was that? He couldn't wait to tell Brittany and
Grace. They'd both probably be excited as well. More than Connor
and Hani, at least.
Eli thanked him, and insisted that he didn't have to be so nice
to him about his song. Sam laughed. "Dude, believe me, it wasn't
the worst thing I've heard. I'm a college kid in a fraternity.
Do you know how many times I've seen a guy get wasted and try to
make up a song? It's a total train wreck, really, but super
entertaining. Connor made up a song about how his mom's chins
were like bananas. Honestly, I kinda see it."
Connor stopped his slurred conversation with Hani to look at
Sam. "That never 'appened, I swear," he said defensively. "I
respect my mother!" he assured the table, slamming his hand onto
the bar while Hani laughed.
"Okay, dude," Sam chuckled, patting Connor's shoulder before
turning back to Eli. "I should probably be getting them home
soon, but, uh, we should exchange numbers, yeah? Since we're
going to be partners and all that," he suggested with a
smile.

Chris sighed when Grace mentioned Gonzalez again. He'd
have to question him on how he even managed to contact Grace and
why he has been spreading more rumors with her. Honestly, that
man just dug himself a deeper hole each day. The only person he
didn't seem to spread rumors about was the captain so he
wouldn't get fired if word got around too much. The guy was
crafty, Chris would give him that.
Grace tried to assure Chris that everything with her and her
boyfriend was fine, but Chris couldn't help but feel like
something was off. When he was Grace's age, he remembered how
girls loved to gush about their boyfriends, but Grace hardly
even spoke of Jonah. She barely mentioned him, and it seemed
like she barely even spoke to the guy himself. Her phone hardly
ever buzzed, and she never appeared to be particularly enthused
when talking about him. Chris wanted to pry more and dig deeper,
but he also wanted to trust Grace and her judgement. Perhaps she
just handled relationships differently? "Well, I'm glad to hear
it," he said with a smile that didn't quite reach his eyes.
"Just know if there's ever anything you want to talk about, I'm
hear to listen," he assured her, lightly placing a hand on her
shoulder briefly.
"So how are your friends?" he asked, changing the subject. "You
still hanging out with that Sam kid? He's the tap dancer, right?
You don't hear of many guys doing stuff like that. Or maybe you
do, I don't know," he admitted with a chuckle. Chris had never
met this Sam guy, but from the bit he knew, he sounded rather
interesting. In fact, he was pretty sure he knew more about him
than the guy Grace was seeing.

Grace couldn't help but laugh when Chris sighed at the mention
of Gonzalez. Maybe she shouldn't have brought him up again. What
was that thing that Sierra always said to her? Something about
not exposing your sources? She couldn't remember, but she could
put together that Gonzalez was her source and selling him out
might be a bad idea. She'd message him on FaceBook later and
tell him all of this stuff. Probably. If she remembered. She
needed to stay updated on everything that happened at the
precinct, since Chris obviously wasn't going to tell her about
everyone's personal lives.
Grace could see that Chris's smile was less than genuine. He
wasn't an idiot. She knew that. He dealt with people lying to
him on a daily basis. Of course, they lied about drug possession
and having a driver's license. She was lying about having a
boyfriend that cared about her. And that she cared about. She
didn't want to hear a speech about leading people on right now,
or about how she was an idiot for being with a guy that's such a
jerk to begin with. So, she'd keep this to herself for the time
being. She gave him a tight-lipped, awkward smile when he put a
hand on her shoulder. "I know, Chris. Thank you," she said
quietly. She was just anxious to get away from the subject. She
knew this was a bad idea, but being alone sounded way worse
right now, especially with Sam spending so much time with
Brittany right now.
Needless to say, she was extremely relieved when Chris changed
the subject, instead wanting to talk about people that didn't
suck. "Oh, they're great," she said. "Leah's got the most active
social life of anyone I know, Sierra's working like crazy trying
to get a last edition of the newsletter out before graduation,
all that fun stuff," she said. She laughed when he asked about
Sam, talking about him being a male tap dancer. "It's definitely
not something you see every day, don't get me wrong," she said
with a grin. "But he's good, really. Just saw that Shazam movie
and broke into my room in the middle of the night to scream
about it," she said. "But, no, he's a lot of fun,
really."

Eli had met a lot of people in his time. He'd met a lot of
people who had a lot of extreme reactions to him. He had,
however, never met someone who was actually giddy at the idea of
working with him. Especially not on his music. During his
engineering days, he'd met a couple of wide-eyed people who
wanted to work with a young MIT graduate, but it never lasted.
Typically, as soon as he opened his mouth, they changed their
minds and requested a transfer. He understood and tried not to
take it too personally. Sam, on the other hand, was the exact
opposite of all the people he'd ever met before. He seemed
genuinely pleased with Eli wanting to work with him. He seemed
thrilled to involve himself with Eli's music, something he
actually enjoyed. This kid was a gift.
He laughed when Sam talked about living on a college campus and
how he'd been subjected to awful drunken songs, which certainly
made him feel better. Eli's songs were bad, but they weren't
that bad. He quirked an eyebrow at the statement though. "A
fraternity, eh? You're definitely cooler than I was in college,"
he mused. "Wait a minute, banana chins?" she asked with a laugh,
listening to Connor's drunken protests. "I didn't have nearly
that much fun at M.I.T." He shrugged at the thought, but he did
quietly wish that he would have had a better experience, like
Sam. Maybe one that was more social as well. But he was, what,
sixteen? That wasn't going to happen.
He nodded when Sam said that they should exchange numbers.
"Yeah, here," he said, handing Sam his phone after putting in
his overly-complicated passcode. "Text me your schedule
sometime. I can work around pretty much anything you've got
going on," he offered.

It was Saturday night by the time Wyatt finally got a
chance to go to the circus after work. He had been waiting for
it all week, and Saturdays were usually the busiest, therefore
the worst, days of the week, meaning he really needed something
to help him de-stress. Looking a a beautiful Russian man lift
heavy things was definitely something that could help with that.
Snagging a date with him would be even better, if he could
actually succeed at such a thing. They had been casually texting
every day, so it felt a little likely.
The only slightly unfortunate thing about going to the circus
after work is that he was now having to drag Robyn and Liv, his
college intern, along. Robyn had wanted to come since she still
had yet to see Dmitri, and apparently still thought Wyatt was
exaggerating about him. As for Liv, well, she just heard the
mention of a circus and insisted it was his job as her boss to
take her out for some fun every now and again since she was
still a teenager. Strangely enough, her parents had seemingly
had no problem with her going to the heart of New York in the
middle of the night to a circus with two adults they had ever
met. He supposed most parents were just not as uptight as his
had been. Good for her.
"You know, I've lived here my whole life and never once have I
heard of this circus," said Liv, zipping up her jacket. "You
sure this guy isn't just trying to lure you somewhere to kill
you? Or, you know, rob you? You're kinda well-known around
here."
Wyatt rolled his eyes, the park coming into view with stringed
lights and tents. "Trust me, he didn't know who I was. Plus, he
screamed innocent, and I can tell when a man is innocent."
"You really love corruption, don't you?" asked Robyn teasingly.
"Then he must hate me. I'm already pretty corrupted."
Robyn laughed. "I think it's mostly men he likes to corrupt."
Liv scrunched up her face in disgust, shoving her hands in her
leather jacket's pockets. "Ew."
"That's homophobic," Wyatt said defensively as they entered the
circus, but he knew they were all just kidding around. Once
everyone was off the clock, Wyatt became a target for teasing
instead of their boss, which he wasn't necessarily complaining
about. It was all in good fun, and it was better than them
teasing the teenage intern.
"Holy fuck, they have carnival games here!" Liv said excitedly,
pointing at the milk bottle toss stand.
Wyatt lightly swatted the back of Liv's head. "Language!" he
reminded her.
Robyn snickered and Liv pouted. "Dude, I'm an adult! We're not
even on the clock!"
"You're such a father, Wyatt. Let Liv have fun," said Robyn.
"Guess we'll meet you somewhere later, Liv."
Wyatt's mouth fell open. "We can't just let her go off by
herself!" he protested to Robyn.
"Again, adult here! Also, I wasn't going to leave yet. I still
wanna see the muscle guy," insisted Liv.
"It's Dmitri, and he said he'd be towards the center of the
circus with all the other performers," said Wyatt, scrolling
through his texts to confirm the information he had just given
out.
"Well lets get a move on then!" said Liv, sounding like she was
starting to get impatient as she walked ahead of them towards
the middle of the circus, Wyatt and Robyn quickly following
after her.

"What the fuck? This game is rigged! I swear to god I've
gotten chutes these last four turns! I'm basically at the start
again! Connor shouted, slamming his hand down on their game of
Chutes and Ladders. "It's all because I got the stupid blue
piece. Red is my lucky color, Hani! You asshole!"
"Dude, this has nothing to do with what color you got! You just
suck!" Hani laughed, making Connor only more outraged as he
continued to shout.
Sam laughed, taking another sip of his Squirt. Since there had
been a big party the night before, himself, Connor, Hani, and
Grace all decided to take it easy tonight, so they had all met
up at his and Connor's dorm for a board game night. Honestly,
board game nights were his favorite, and Sam always insisted on
Chutes and Ladders. Sure, it was a game that was simply based on
the luck of a roll, but he didn't care. Connor somehow always
ended up loosing, and Hani always winning, which was hilarious
since Connor was such a sore loser.
"Whatever! I'm going to get a drink. Sam, it's your turn," said
Connor with a huff, beginning to stand up from the floor before
Sam pulled him back down.
"No! No drinking tonight!" Sam insisted, still holding onto
Connor's wrist, which Connor was staring at intently.
"Oh? And why is that?" asked Connor, sounding only slightly
annoyed now.
Sam swallowed. He still hadn't told the gang that Eli was coming
over to work on their first song together tonight. He just
didn't know how to tell them that he had befriended an adult and
was now kinda working for him. It sounded... super weird. "Uh...
because you get even more pissy?" Sam didn't mean for it to come
out as a question, but it did, making him sound even more
suspicious.
"I mean... fair, but is that really the reason why? You've been
acting weird all night; insisting you can't go out for a movie,
we have to clean the dorm... What is up with you?"
"Nothing!" Sam laughed unsteadily. "Nothing at all! I just wanna
see Hani kick your butt at a children's game," Sam tried to shit
the conversation.
"A children's game that also happens to be your favorite?"
questioned Hani with a laugh.
Sam smiled. "Exactly."

Dmitri was good at his job. That's what people told him, anyway.
He didn't quite understand performance art the way he probably
should have, given that he'd been doing it for as long as he
had. He lacked the stage presence that other performers had, or
so he'd always thought. Dmitri wasn't an incredibly loud,
commanding human being. But he was strong. He had been
throughout his life. He could lift and break things better than
anyone he knew. And people seemed to really enjoy watching him
do these things, so he figured that was all he really needed to
know about performance. Still, with as many times as he'd done
this exact routine, he felt oddly overwhelmed at the sight of a
crowd, at watching his charismatic and charming comrades on
stage before him. His routine was simple, he remembered. He'd
done it countless times without fail. Surely, that would be
enough.
He was announced, and he walked out into his typical performance
space. He glanced out over the crowd. It wasn't as big as some
of the crowds that they drew in Berlin or Madrid, but a sizable
crowd all the same. He vaguely recognized someone in the crowd,
a dark-haired man with very, very good skin, Dmitri thought.
Little Wyatt, the man with the bird shirt. He seemed a really
kind, polite individual, which was saying something. In his
brief time in New York City, the Russian hadn't seen as much
hospitality as he'd hoped. Wyatt was different though, a good
friend. He was glad that he managed to make it tonight. The two
had been texting about this for a few days and he was starting
to believe that he was simply humoring him, rather than actually
planning on seeing Dmitri in action.
Dmitri completed his set, deadlifting several tired, ripping a
phone book in half, among a few other feats that he thought
completely uninspired at this point. They were impressive to
typical people, he knew. Everyone made a habit of telling him
so. But Dmitri was tired of it, seeing it only as a source of
income, a place to stay and a people to call his own. It wasn't
a passion, by any means. It was much too barbaric, too rough and
violent. He didn't like being known for ripping things in half
or breaking things or flipping cars. He wanted to be known for
discovering beauty in the world and putting it on display. Alas,
it simply was not to be. Beauty was reserved for smaller things,
he thought.
Regardless, his performance ended and he humbly accepted what
applause the audience had to offer before retreating to his
caravan. It wasn't much, but it was enough, he thought. He
quickly change from his costume into street clothes, wanting to
greet his friend in a t-shirt and a pair of jeans rather than
this weird unitard they made him wear. He wanted to greet Wyatt
as a friend, not as a performer in a tired and odd circus in the
middle of New York City. He left his caravan, scanning the crowd
once more until he noticed the man, short but with jet black
hair and bright eyes. Dmitri approached him with a warm smile.
"Little Wyatt, my friend," he said brightly. "So happy you could
make it," he said. "I see you've brought friends," he added
quickly, smiling and waving at the two woman who accompanied
Wyatt.

Grace was pretty happy to have a laid back Saturday night on
campus after the disaster of a party the night before. The party
was fun for most of the people who went, but she'd practically
dragged Jonah along just to try and feel like she was someone's
girlfriend. That was, apparently, a terrible idea. He wasn't
happy and spent the entire time letting her know that he hated
her friends and that the whole thing was a waste of time. He
hadn't responded to any of her texts since last night. She
didn't really talk about it to anyone either, since she didn't
want the judgment and the stares and the not-so-nice comments
from Sam's roommate. But, on the plus side, Sam, Connor, and
Hani were willing to include her in their game night, which
helped her get her mind off of the whole thing.
They were playing Chutes and Ladders, which was Sam's favorite
game, for some reason. She wasn't going to complain. Watching
Connor lose was absolutely hilarious. She wasn't sure how
someone could get chutes as often as he did, but she knew that
blaming it on the piece he was playing with was just sad. But
not surprising. Grace laughed throughout his temper tantrum,
watching the banter between Connor and Hani. It was nothing new.
However, what was new was the fact that Sam's room, for the
first time in a long time, was clean. And he was trying to
forbid everyone from drinking, which was strange.
"I mean, I could go for a drink too," she said before Sam
grabbed Connor's wrist, insisting that everyone stay sober
tonight. That was strange. And he didn't have a real explanation
for it. "I love watching Hani beat Connor as much as anyone,"
she began, quirking an eyebrow at Sam. "But Connor's got a
point. You've been acting a little off tonight. And your room
hasn't been clean in months at least," she said. "What aren't
you telling us?" she asked, leaning back and propping herself up
on her hands.

Wyatt and the others made it to where the performers
were just in time to the fire juggler, much to Liv's apparent
delight. As for Wyatt, well, he was amused, especially when the
man swallowed some fire, but that wasn't what he was there to
see. He was there to see a rather large, and rather handsome
Russian man perform great acts of strength. Anyone could learn
how to juggle fire, he was assuming, but it took work to be as
strong as Dmitri, he supposed. Still, he was sure that the acts
leading up to Dmitri would still be entertaining enough. It
wasn't like Wyatt had been to many circuses in his life...
unless you counted his own home growing up as one, which he most
certainly did. Of course, that circus wasn't as nearly as
enjoyable.
Two clowns, a dancer, and a bearded lady later, Dmitri was
finally announced, and Wyatt was suddenly much more alert,
straightening up so he could better see over the crowd of
people.
"Dmitri is the guy, right?" asked Robyn, her's and Liv's eyes
glued to the stage as well.
"Yes, now hush," Wyatt insisted, grinning as Dmitri came out on
the stage, looking as gorgeous as ever. If he could actually
manage to snag a date tonight, he'd be the luckiest man on the
planet.
Liv audibly gasped. "Holy fuck Wyatt! That's the guy? He's
swol."
Wyatt raised a brow, briefly letting his eyes wonder off of
Dmitri to stare at Liv. "I'm sorry, he's what now?"
"Very fit," Robyn quickly explained, waving a hand at Wyatt.
"Quiet now, he's starting."
Wyatt let out a dramatic huff of breath, but, of course, looked
back at the stage, watching, completely enthralled as Dmitri
lifted things Wyatt guessed weighted twice as much as him, and
ripping things in half. It was strange to see such a peaceful,
quiet man perform such violent acts, but Wyatt was impressed
nonetheless. The man was doing things Wyatt had never even
imagined a man could do. Robyn and Liv were also visibly
impressed, cheering and gasping along with the crowd when it was
appropriate. Wyatt politely clapped, keeping himself mostly
contained. He wasn't used to such settings as this. The loudest
place he had even been in was, well, a strip club, but he had
only gone in to confirm that his lover at the time had been
cheating on him. He had.
Once Dmitri was done, he left the stage. Where he went? Wyatt
couldn't tell, but he knew the man was bound to remember their
meeting tonight. "Well, what did you think?" Wyatt asked Robyn a
bit smugly.
"He's definitely real," she said, looking amused. "And very
handsome."
"Wyatt, he's smokin'." Liv cut in. "Like a real-life, Russian
Superman."
Robyn laughed, Wyatt snorted. "That's one way to put it." Wyatt
then spotted Dmitri approaching them, and they all quickly
furthered themselves more from the crowd. Dmitri was now wearing
regular clothes, which was probably a good thing. Wyatt could
have sworn he started to drool at one point seeing him in that
unitard, no matter how tacky the pattern was. Honestly, he could
design something a lot better.
Wyatt greeted Dmitri with a big smile as the man told him that
he was happy he came, waving at Robyn and Liv. "Oh! Yes, I hope
you don't mind that they came along. Dmitri, this is Robyn, my
head seamstress, and Liv, my intern," he introduced his friends.
"Pleasure to meet you," said Robyn, politely extending her hand
to him to shake.
"What's up?" said Liv in greeting, also sticking out her hand,
but a bit more awkwardly. She never was all that formal.
"That was quite the performance!" Wyatt complimented the other
man, standing a bit closer to him. "I knew you had to be strong,
but that was something else entirely. I was speechless," he
smiled flirtatiously, ignoring Robyn staring at him like she
couldn't believe what he was doing.

Sam was glad that he had seemed to shift the
conversation off of himself and how he didn't want people
drinking... or wearing their shoes on the carpet... or eating
snacks and spreading crumbs, but then Grace spoke up, saying she
could also go for a drink before further pointing out how weird
he was acting and asking what was going on. Great, of course
they weren't going to just let it all go. Sam was being a total
party-pooper, and he was never the party-pooper. That was
usually Hani's job. Kinda. He was a babysitter for Connor,
really, and Sam appreciated that.
"Nothing's up. Why would something be up? I mean, we don't have
to drink at every gathering, right? We're not alcoholics, yeah?
We're just four kids, havin' fun and playing some good ol'
Chutes and Ladders."
"Well I'm not having fun. This game sucks. Lets just play
Trouble or something dumb like that," Connor pouted, crossing
his arms. "But first, I am getting a drink, because this is my
dorm too, and the Bud Light's are all mine," he said
confidently, starting to walk off again before Sam once more
grabbed his wrist. "Dude! Come on! What's up your ass?"
Sam laughed nervously. "Nothing! It's just... uh..." Sam knew he
had to think of something to say to get everyone off his case.
"I'm on a diet and it would be rude for you to drink in front of
me?"

Dmitri smiled brightly as Wyatt addressed him, almost asking for
forgiveness for bringing his friends along. He didn't understand
why it would be a problem. Dmitri was always up for new friends
and he didn't expect Wyatt to come here alone to meet him. What
fun is visiting the circus by yourself? Dmitri did a lot by
himself, of course, but if he had the option to pal around with
other people, he'd take it. "Is no problem," he said, warmly
smiling as Wyatt introduced the women individually. Robyn was a
beautiful blonde woman, apparently Wyatt's head seamstress. Liv
was much, much younger than the rest of them with thick, very
curly hair. They both seemed like lovely young women.
He shook both of their hands, respectively, and as gently as he
possibly could. He was aware that people often got the wrong
idea about him, especially after seeing his performances. He was
strong, sure, but strength did not equate to brutality. Him
being foreign also lead itself to the 'super stoic and scary
Russian' stereotype. "Is very nice to meet both of you,
friends," he said softly. He noted how awkward and uncomfortable
she seemed, and wish he knew how to remedy that. He hoped she
was just awkward in general and that it wasn't because he
frightened her. "I hope you're doing well, malen'kiye ptitsy,"
he said to the two of them.
He chuckled, kinda awkward, when Wyatt complimented his
performance. "Why thank you, Little Wyatt," he said, rubbing the
back of his neck. It was just such an odd line of work, one he
wasn't always super proud of. It conflicted with his character.
It gave everyone a unique impression of him. But Wyatt was being
friendly about it, and that's all he could ask for. "It's not
glamorous work, but it allows me to see the world and its
people," he said with a fond smile. "Have you three had the
chance to see the rest of the circus?" he asked. "The lions look
scary, but they're very good, very kind creatures," he said.

Grace wasn't ashamed of liking to drink. She didn't think she
had to be. But Sam wasn't making it any easy. Throwing out the
word alcoholic casually like he did definitely made her think
about certain things. It's not like it was a triggering word or
anything, nothing she would mention or even get visibly upset
about, but now she felt like she should feel guilty about
wanting a shot of something. Grace was about to respond to Sam,
to try and tell him that he was, indeed, acting weird and that
everyone in the room could see it and that he's never once been
concerned about keeping things super tidy in his life so why
start now.
But then Connor cut him off, whining about Chutes and Ladders,
again, pouting like an actual child. "Okay, Connor, you're not
four," she said. "No need to be such a sore loser," she added,
letting out a sigh. Then Connor stood up, making a big deal
about going after his beer before Sam grabbed his wrist, which
was really weird. She was about to ask what the hell was up with
him, why it mattered to him so much, and why he was suddenly so
cool with grabbing Connor and being weird. But, again Connor
beat her to it.
Grace quirked an eyebrow at Sam's dieting comment. "You're on a
diet?" she asked, not believing it for a second. Sam was in
perfect shape from all the dancing and stuff. He literally had
no reason to diet. Did he? Oh boy. If Sam needed to go on a
diet, Grace definitely needed to lose a few pounds.
Subconsciously, she pulled her knees up so that they covered her
stomach, which she now guessed was probably too big, but she
didn't bring it up again. "Well, either way, lucky for you, Bug
Lite is a lite beer. Meaning it's already a diet drink so..."
she said with a shrug. That's when she heard a knock on the
door.

Sam's schedule was surprisingly easy for Eli to work with. He
was a college student with dance rehearsals -- which was
unexpected, to say the least -- but was usually free during the
evenings. Eli had set up a time to meet with him at his dorm in
his frat house in NYU. Eli never thought he'd ever set foot in a
frat house ever again after his awkward time at MIT, so this was
a bit unnerving for him. He took some time to research Sam's
specific fraternity, Delta Lamba Phi. It was an LGBT fraternity,
which was odd to him. He didn't think those existed, but he was
glad that they did. Sam needed a place to be free to be himself.
He made his way through the house, which wasn't super loud that
night, to his relief. He looked for the number that matched the
one Sam gave him, eventually coming up on a door on the second
floor. He took a moment to gather his thoughts. He didn't know
if Sam would be alone or if he would be with his roommate. He
didn't know if he needed to introduce himself to other college
students, to try and make a good impression. He didn't know if
they just needed to get straight down to the music. He also
hoped that Sam was as skilled of a poet as he thought, so that
his lyrics would go well with Eli's melodies. He had a lot of
thoughts running through his mind, despite how trivial the
situation seemed. He let out a sigh and knocked on the door.

Wyatt grinned happily as Dmitri shook hands with Robyn
and Liv, even speaking Russian to them which made them all blink
in confusion. He was sure that whatever he said was nice, but
Wyatt did not speak a bit of Russian. French, sure, but not
Russian. He also spoke Spanish, but neither would help him
understand what the hell Dmitri was saying. Thankfully, the
girls didn't seem too concerned by it. In fact, Robyn looked
like she was about to scream from how sweet Dmitri was being. It
was hard to find decent men in New York. Most were jerks or had
just gotten out of prison for murder.
Dmitri thanked Wyatt for his compliment, being all humble and
adorable and saying that he liked his job because of the people
he got to meet. How could a man be without sin? Dmitri was the
most perfect thing he had ever laid eyes on. "We haven't seen
the rest of the circus, actually," said Wyatt a bit excitedly.
This was his chance to spend some alone time with Dmitri. Sure,
it wouldn't technically be a date (maybe), but it was still a
chance to get to know him better and give him more of a chance
to ask him on an actual date. There was the problem of the
ladies being there though.
"Oh Liv, don't you have cat allergy?" said Robyn to save the
day. Wyatt was grateful he didn't even have to try to hint at
them leaving.
Liv raised a brow. "What? No-"
"Oh silly, but you do, remember?" said Robyn with a laugh,
nudging Liv.
"What?" Liv asked again before finally making eye contact and
noticing The Look™ on Wyatt's face. "Oh! Pfft, yeah, I'm so
forgetful sometimes. I do have a cat allergy! Guess I shouldn't
go see the lions with you all."
"And I should go with you so you don't have to be alone!" said
Robyn to Liv, linking arms with the girl. "Come on, lets go play
that game you were looking at," she insisted, starting to drag
Liv away. "Goodbye Dmitri! It was nice to meet you!" she called
over her shoulder with a wave. Liv slowly waved as well,
offering the Russian a smile.
Wyatt cleared his throat. "Well... looks like it's just the two
of us!" he pointed out with an awkward chuckle. This was the
first time since they had met that Wyatt had gotten to be alone
with Dmitri. It was a little nerve-wracking, but he didn't want
to show that. "So you say the lion are nice? I am a big fan of
cats," he said conversationally, standing a bit closer to the
other man now that everyone else was gone. "Care to lead the
way?"

"You're a sore loser!" Connor shot back at Grace like a
literal four-year-old. Already, he was disproving Grace's
supposed fact. Sam was starting to panic, fearing that Connor
will still be in a major mood when Eli would eventually come.
However, he was sticking to his no drinking policy. The last
time Eli met Connor, Connor was wasted and rude.
"Uh, I'll have you know that I most certainly am on a diet!" Sam
defended himself, still holding onto an agitated Connor. "I've
been trying to eat more salads and more protein... it helps give
me energy for my dancing," he explained. "And Bud Lite is still
an alcoholic beverage, and I don't want anyone getting anywhere
near tipsy because-"
"Guys, there's someone at the door," Hani pointed out, Sam
totally missing the knocking. "Have you been expecting someone
this whole time? Is it Brittany? That would explain why you
cleaned the dorm, but-"
Sam let go of Connor and rushed to the door, throwing it open
with the biggest smile on his face. "Eli! So glad you could make
it, man! You came just in time. We just finished Chutes and
Ladders. Do you like Chutes and Ladders? I do. Come on in!" he
rambled excitedly, stepping aside and motioning to his dorm.
"This is my place, and these are my friends. You remember Hani
and Connor, right?" he asked while Hani slowly waved, looking
slightly uncomfortable at the unexpected company, and Connor
stared with his mouth slightly open. "Oh, and this is Grace! You
haven't met her yet, but she's great," Sam went on, sitting back

Dmitri was very confused by Wyatt and his friends. They seemed
to be reacting to him in and odd manor. They didn't seem afraid
of him or even unnerved, which was a very, very good thing. But
they did spend a lot of time staring at him and they seemed...
well, he wasn't sure how they seemed. Reading facial cues wasn't
always a strength of his. He guessed that maybe they were having
a tough time with his accent, which was normal. He'd simply do
his best to speak slower, and to try to enunciate and talk with
his hands and such to be as clear as possible. He didn't want to
make things more difficult for his new friends. So he should
probably lay off the random bits of Russian if he can help it.
He perked up when Wyatt said that they hadn't seem much of
anything else at the circus. He had become friends with a few of
the other performers and vendors here, so he figured he'd be the
best tour guide this little group could get. Of course, he was
thrilled to show everyone the lions. Elio Romano, the lion
tamer, was a nice man who was good with his cats and wouldn't
let anyone get hurt. He'd also let them get a closer look at the
animals if Dmitri asked nicely, he was sure. He was about to
express such excitement, when Robyn said that Liv was allergic
to cats. This was odd, since Liv seemed really confused about
the whole thing, but he chalked it up to her just being nervous,
since she seemed a little on edge since he arrived. He did let
out a sigh at the realization though. "Apologies for that,
friends. Was nice to meet you! Hope to see you both again!" he
said with a wave as the woman left.
He looked down at Wyatt, who seemed very eager to meet the
lions. Dmitri was really happy that his new friend was so
enthusiastic about the animals, and not afraid of them. Most
people were afraid of them. He nodded at Wyatt's question. "Yes,
my friend Elio is very good with his cats. They're very friendly
so long as you are also friendly, but I don't think that'll be a
problem for you, Little Wyatt," he said casually, walking toward
the eastern quadrant of the circus where Elio performed with his
cats. "Elio has two lions, Harmil and Ruwed, and a beautiful,"
but he stopped for a moment, struggling to find the English word
for tigress. He panicked, went with Russian instead and hoped
that Wyatt caught on anyway. "A beautiful tigritsa named Shiva,"
he said.

Grace raised an eyebrow and cocked her head at Connor's pathetic
excuse for a rebuttal. She eventually raised both of her
eyebrows in a very much I-told-you-so manner before sighing and
shrugging her shoulders. As much fun as it was to argue with
Connor, it was kinda useless. And she didn't want to expend the
energy at that moment, especially not while she was still trying
to get to the bottom of whatever was up Sam's ass. Grace wasn't
suggesting that they all get shitfaced tonight, but she wanted
to kick back and relax a little, especially after her
less-than-fun night with Jonah the night before. It helped her
deal with all the testosterone in the room as well.
Sam got a bit on the defensive and -- daresay -- snippy side
when Grace questioned his diet. She raised an eyebrow at his
explanation, casually resting her hands on the floor and leaning
back into them. She almost went back at him about how he was
being inconsistent, but then there was a knock on the door and
Hani finally broke the tension, as he usually does. Grace's eyes
went wide though at the name Brittany. While she'd made a
resolution with herself to be nicer to the girl and give her a
chance, Grace really, really didn't want to deal with her now.
Not while she was having fun with the guys. To be frank, she
kinda enjoyed being the only girl in the room at that moment.
Then Hani went on to talk about how it would explain Sam going a
bit nuts with the cleaning. He wasn't trying to impress
Brittany, was he? He never took the time to clean out his dorm
for her or Leah or Sierra or anyone else when they visited, but
Hani made a point to talk about it with Brittany. Grace bit her
lip, pulling her knees close to her chest. She had basically
decided to leave before her petty jealous got the better of her
when Sam introduced them to a man, not Brittany.
She let out a silent sigh of relief and relaxed a little. She
noted Sam rambling, excited but maybe also nervous about this
oddly attractive walking telephone pole. While it was nice to
see a handsome(?) stranger and not Brittany at the door, Grace
still wasn't thrilled about the unexpected company. She'd get
over it though. Sam was way, way too excited about this man and
she wasn't going to betray that. She blushed a little bit when
Sam introduced her. He called her great, which was a simple
adjective, but still a compliment. She waved awkwardly at the
man. "Hi," she said. "I don't mean to sound rude, but who are
you, exactly?"

Eli wasn't eavesdropping. He didn't even really know how to
eavesdrop. He was too awkward and clumsy to ever do it
successfully anyway. Regardless of his lack of stealthiness, he
did manage to hear what sounded like a bickering match on the
other side of the door. He couldn't make out any specific words
-- not that he was trying too -- but it sounded like there was
definitely more than one person in the room. Eli was almost
expecting Sam's roommate, the blonde drunk guy from the bar
probably, to be there. But then there were other voices, one
male and one female. Was he gathering a group for some reason?
The door opened very suddenly and Sam was right there, beaming
at him, but looking a little disheveled, as if he literally ran
to the door for some reason. Eli smiled brightly at his young
friend, and how excitable he seemed at the moment. "Hi Sam," he
said, rocking on the balls of his feet for a moment. He laughed
quietly at the mention of Chutes and Ladders. It definitely
wasn't what he expected out of college students at night, but it
was refreshing. He was expecting that someone just got back from
something actually wild. "Uh, Chutes and Ladders is fine, but
I'm more of a Scrabble man myself," he said humbly, rubbing the
back of his neck for a moment. He was about to ask if he could
come in, but Sam had already invited him, practically ushering
him into the dorm room.
Eli complied. He saw two of the boys from the bar: the blonde --
Connor -- and the Hawaiian -- Hani, he believed. They both
seemed sober tonight, which was a pleasant change. He waved at
the two boys. "Nice to see you two again," he said. Sam then
motioned to a blonde girl sitting on the ground. Grace,
apparently. She waved and greeted him, somewhat awkward and
uncomfortable, but he figured they'd all warm up to each other.
"Nice to meet you," he said. Grace then asked who he was. "Oh,
I'm Eli. Sam and I met the other night at a bar. We're supposed
to be working together on some songs. He didn't tell you guys
about me?" he asked.

Wyatt smiled and listened as Dmitri began to talk about
the lions and their tamer, Elio. Even though he didn't seem too
crazy about his job, he did appear to love the circus
altogether. It was really quite adorable. The man seemed so
happy and passionate about almost everything, and it was a bit
contagious. Wyatt felt like he couldn't be upset about anything
when the man was so joyful. It was a nice change of pace from
some of the people he had to associate with regularly. The
business world in New York was a nightmare. "Well, I'm glad you
think I'm friendly," said Wyatt with a tinge of pink in his
cheeks. Dmitri was flirting. At least, he thought he was.
However, Dmitri's flirting quickly became one of the least of
his concerns when the man mentioned a tigress. "Wait, there's a
tigress too? Am I- am I actually going to get to get close to
her?" he asked, trying his best to contain his own excitement.
Tigers were his favorite animal. Well, Siberian Tigers,
technically, but all tigers were beautiful to him. He had only
seen one in a zoo before, but, of course, he'd never been able
to get near one. Perhaps he should be nervous about such a
thing, but he trusted Dmitri, and if he trusted this Elio, then
he would too, he supposed. "That would be a dream! Seeing a
tiger up close is something I never even considered being able
to do. Animal print actually is coming back into style, it
seems, so I'm thinking of doing some tiger patterns with the
usual cheetah," he said conversationally, keeping close to the
other man.

Sam laughed when Eli mentioned Scrabble. He guessed
Scrabble was alright, but that involved so much thinking. Chutes
and Ladders was much more simple, and usually took a lot less
time. But, he respected Eli's choice. He was an intelligent man,
he could tell, so of course he would choose an intelligent game.
"Yeah, Scrabble is pretty rad," he agreed, grinning ear to ear
as Eli entered his dorm. This was officially one of the coolest
moments in his college life. He would now be known as "the cool
kid with the cool adult singer friend" instead of "the dancer."
Things were looking up. Connor already looked completely
shocked. Of course, that was probably just because he never
expected to see Eli again after the bar.
Sam's face fell slightly when Eli questioned if Sam had
mentioned him. Shoot, he was probably offended that he hadn't
been mentioned to his friends, but he had a good reason. "I
wanted you coming over to be a surprise," Sam began to explain,
scratching his neck. "And, uh, I didn't know how the gang would
react to me having an adult friend."
"Dude, literally everyone here right now is an adult. We're all
over eighteen. You're a senior in college," Hani reminded him.
"Wait, did you say you were working with Sam... on songs?"
Connor questioned, pushing the game of Chutes and Ladders aside.
"No offense to either of you, but uh, Sam doesn't know shit
about composing or anything, and your songs... well... sucked at
the bar," said Connor a bit harshly. "Why are you trusting a
college student with this? Shouldn't you be going to... idk, a
professional?"
Hani threw the die from Chutes and Ladders at Connor, hitting
him right in the head before getting a six. "Quit being rude."
Connor yelped about being hit before rubbing the spot on his
head and glaring at Hani. "You're the rude one! You just hit
me!"
"So this is the gang!" Sam said proudly, motioning to everyone
and ignoring Connor and Hani.

Wyatt was being very, very smiley. And he was blushing every now
and then. Dmitri supposed he understood this. Based on what he
gathered regarding American culture, it wasn't common to get
compliments from people. Wyatt must have just been happy to have
a friend who called him a friend. Americans were certainly very,
very strange. But he was glad he could brighten up this man's
day and make him feel better about himself. He deserved to feel
good about himself. Wyatt was a nice guy. "You are quite a nice
man, Little Wyatt," he said nonchalantly.
He noted how excited the man got at the mention of a tigress. He
wasn't sure what it was that got him so excited. Maybe he just
really liked tigers? Dmitri supposed there was nothing wrong
with that. He just wasn't expecting such a big reaction is all.
"When I talk to Elio, am sure he'll let you pet Shiva," he said
confidently. "She's a bit feisty but is good cat, I swear," he
said. He was a little confused by the next statement though.
Animal print? Surely Wyatt wasn't planning on skinning these
animals for fashion purposed. He seemed too nice for that. "Is
synthetic, correct?" he asked.
He walked alongside the man until he entered a small tent.
Elio's performance was over and he was sitting among the ring,
his lions and tigress munching on their snacks as Elio sighed,
picking at his fingernails. "Elio, friend, this is my little
friend Wyatt. He has yet to meet Shiva," he said with a warm
smile.

Grace didn't pay too much attention to whatever Sam and Eli were
talking about when he ushered the man into his dorm room.
Something about Chutes and Ladders? Maybe something else was
sprinkled in there? She didn't know for sure and she didn't care
enough to figure it out. Her mind was, unfortunately, on other
things right now. Stupid things that didn't matter and no one
was talking about because they had no bearing on this
conversation. But she was thinking about how she felt fat now,
how Sam, apparently had a super obvious crush on Brittany, and
how Jonah, like, actually seemed like he might want to spend
time with her tonight when she gets back from Sam's. The last
part was particularly strange, since Jonah literally always
tried to get out being around her. But she'd take it, especially
with how insecure she felt in that moment.
She snapped back to attention when Hani started talking. She
knew Hani. She liked Hani. And Hani was right. They were all
adults. Grace's best friend -- outside of her college friends of
course -- was an adultier adult. Her adoptive father. This
wasn't exactly new or weird to her, but she figured she'd just
let it go. She thought she was going to stay quiet for a second,
but then Connor started making less-than-nice comments about Sam
and then being rude to Eli. On instinct, she casually smacked
him on the arm. "Stop being a fucking asshole," he said through
gritted teeth. Hani threw a die at him. Connor didn't seem happy
about it. For obvious reasons. Then Sam casually gestured to the
group of bickering children behind him, introducing them as 'the
gang'.
Her phone vibrated before she could say anything to that.
"Actually, make that 'the gang' minus one," she said, standing
up. "Jonah wants to meet me for something. Says it's important,"
she said, putting her phone back in her pocket. "And, ya know,
he doesn't think anything's important ever, so this is probably
actually a big deal," she said. "But thanks for inviting me
over. It was nice to meet you, Eli," she said, making way for
the door before waving goodbye to everyone -- even Connor -- and
leaving.

Eli's smile widened when he said that Scrabble was rad. He knew
that being into board games was probably kinda childish and that
caring a lot about people liking Scrabble was even more
childish. But he didn't really care. "Oh, I'm so glad you said
that, Sam. You see, no one ever wants to play Scrabble with me
and it's a little upsetting because it's such a fun game with so
much thinking and brightness and it's a shame that no one seems
to care for it," he said, almost all in one breath. He sat down
next to Sam.
Sam's expression lost a little bit of it's usual light when Eli
asked if Sam mentioned him before. He shook his head quickly.
"Oh, that's totally, totally 100% fine," he said. "I was just a
little surprised myself is all," he added. He was about to say
something else, about how surprises were good for the psyche and
kept people on their toes and helped to develop improvisational
skills, but he was cut off by Hani talking with Sam about
'adult' friends. "Besides, I'm not sure I qualify as a 'real
adult'," he said with an awkward laugh.
Then Connor cut in, just as aggressive as he was at the bar. He
tried to laugh off the insults as nonchalantly as he could. He
didn't know if the kid was trying to be rude or if it just
happened naturally. "Oh, my songs are terrible and I'm not
counting on Sam to cover composition," he said with a shrug.
"He's going to be my lyricist. Why would I go to a professional
when Sam is right here?" he asked. His eyes went wide at the
aggression as Hani threw stuff at Connor and Grace slapped him.
"And what a gang they are," he said with a smile as Sam
introduced them for a second time. Then Grace got up, declaring
that she had to leave to spend some time with Jonah. Once she
shut the door behind her, Eli quirked an eyebrow. "Who is this
mysterious Jonah?" he asked before quickly shaking his head.
"Never mind. Unimportant. Anywho, Sam, do you have anything
specific that you want to show me right away or should we try to
work backwards from my established compositions?"
