Ben certainly never meant to offend Rey or trigger her in any
way by bringing up her past as a scavenger. He was just a fool,
talking without really thinking and not really knowing what to
say when he was thinking. He didn't have normal conversations.
Not usually. Not in many cycles. The most normal conversations
he had had recently were all about strategizing attacks on the
Resistance. He had been nothing but a puppet, a monster, a
soldier, and a leader of a war for most of his adult life. He
didn't know what it was like to just... converse with someone
naturally. He apologized to her, explaining that he had meant no
offense by what he had said, and Rey forgave him far too easily,
blaming his words on his painkillers. While he supposed he could
blame the painkillers, he knew that wasn't the actual cause. He
didn't feel out of his mind in any way. He was in complete
control of his body. He explained to her that he just wasn't
used to having conversations and didn't know how to talk to
people. Even before his fall to the dark side, he hadn't been
very good with people. He had really only ever had one friend,
and that was only because he was a highly skilled telepath who
knew his true intentions. Other than that, he never had anyone,
really. No one that he felt like he could truly talk to about
anything meaningful. Rey nodded, saying that she understood and
had been through the same thing after Crait. He told her that he
could imagine her social skills being as terrible as his own.
She had always been so good at saying the right things to him,
and she was clearly good with people. He added that everyone
always seemed so drawn to her, but she shook her head. She told
him that she had spent more time with BB-8, Poe Dameron's droid,
he presumed, than she with anyone in the Resistance, originally.
She explained that she had mostly been training on her own while
everyone else had been on missions and that she had tried to
socialize, but she was unable to find her place among them.
"People are often fickle and unreliable, I have learned," he
said. Everyone he had ever tried to form any kind of connection
with had only ended up betraying him in one way or another,
except Rey. "But I'm sure you feel differently," he added,
knowing that she had friends now. He hadn't failed to notice her
traveling with that former Stormtrooper that had turned against
the First Order and the Resistance pilot, Poe Dameron, on
Pasaana. There was clearly some sort of connection there.
Rey's stomach growled, pulling him from his thoughts as he
offered her his bread. She turned him down, talking about how he
needed it more than her, which he found only a bit silly. It
wasn't like one slice of bread was really going to do much for
him. He insisted that she take it, and she accepted, but only
because she intended to repay him for it. He told her that
wasn't necessary, but she didn't let up, saying she'd still
repay him nonetheless. He assured her that it was just bread to
him, trying to make it clear that it meant nothing to him,
unlike how he was sure it meant a lot to her. It had to after
what she had just told him about her life on Jakku. He turned
his attention to his soup, seeing her continue to watch him out
of the corner of his eyes, but she didn't push any further about
the bread, letting it go. He slowly began to eat his soup, being
careful with it so that he wouldn't burn himself or spill any of
it. He didn't notice Rey slowing down with her own eating, too
lost in how strangely delicious he found the soup to be,
figuring he had to be enjoying it so much since it reminded him
of better times. Of his mother, and thankfully, Rey began to
speak again before he could get too carried away in his own
thoughts. She spoke of their living arrangements, but mostly
hers, saying that she planned on staying near the Resistance so
that she could help them, which made sense. She began to stammer
after that before making the suggestion that he lives with her.
In a separate room, but still with her. It was surprising to
hear, honestly. While he knew that she cared about him, he never
would have thought that she'd actually want to live with him. It
was too good to be true. He confessed that he wanted to stay
with her however he could, but he couldn't ignore all the issues
that could arise from living with her. He told her that it would
be dangerous for him to be so close to her all the time and that
he really needed to live somewhere that wasn't so public for a
while, thinking it wouldn't be fair for Rey to have to live that
way as well. Her disappointment was evident from how quickly her
smile faded, and he had to look away from her, adding that he
also believed that it would be best if she pretended to have
nothing to do with him once his injuries were healed. He didn't
want anyone turning against her because of him, but she assured
him that they'd be alright. She said she didn't care what people
thought of them or what would happen, reminding him of how she
had been fighting her whole life and how they had taken down
Palpatine together, feeling sorry for anyone who tried to oppose
them. He wanted to laugh at that, but couldn't bring himself to
do so, still uncertain but wanting so desperately what she was
offering him. He pointed out that this time, however, she'd be
fighting off her friends and the rest of the Resistance if she
were to stay with him. Her shoulder slumped before she stated
that if they were really her friends, then they wouldn't ask her
to abandon someone she cared about. She was right, of course.
She always was, but there was still one more thing. He assured
her that he didn't want to be without her, which was true, but
he felt like it would be selfish of him to make her risk so
much, pointing out that he had been selfish with her enough. She
argued that he wasn't being selfish if she was the one who
wanted it, and she did. She did want it. He met her eyes again
at that, still almost in disbelief that it was really her asking
for this and not the other way around. He knew that his points
had been reasonable enough to bring up, but he felt foolish for
trying to resist this. Something that they both wanted, and he
didn't think he could ever truly deny her anything that she
desired. He told her that he would stay with her in that case.
Gladly, in fact, smiling lightly. She smiled as well again,
nodding her head, saying once again that this is what she
wanted. She wanted to be with him. He still couldn't recall
anyone else ever saying that to him. She and his father were the
only people who had ever expressed actually wanting him. She
added that they could keep each other safe, and he nodded,
knowing that he would always do everything he could to ensure
her safety. She also said that they could help each other
adjust, confessing that neither of them were ready for the new
world, and he couldn't agree more. He had no clue what the
future held for them, or anyone, for that matter, but at least
he'd get to be with her. That was certain, for now. "No we are
not," he agreed. "But I'm not worried knowing you will be
there," he admitted, knowing that as long as he was with her,
everything would work out. "And I plan on doing everything I can
to try and make things right again. To atone," he assured
her.

After briefly discussing their social skills -- or lack thereof
-- and Rey continuing to dance around having to talk about her
shallow relationships with her friends for fears of revealing
too much to Ben, they dug back into their meals. Rey eventually
talked about living arrangements, which she had been thinking
about for a little bit. She was still uncertain about much of it
and had no idea where to go, but she knew that she wanted to
take Ben with her. She needed to take Ben with her. They were a
package deal from here on out, as far as she was concerned. It
took some convincing, because Ben apparently had some
reservations. He kept claiming he was concerned about her
safety, about her relationships with her friends. She didn't
worry too much about that. Finn and Poe were already upset with
her and that wasn't going to change any time soon, just because
she brought Ben back and didn't let Kylo Ren's physical body die
on Exegol. She tried to assure him that they'd be safe no matter
what and that her friends wouldn't make her choose between them
and someone she cared about. She truly cared about Ben, wanted
him in her life. She wasn't about to let him go again, not after
their experience on the Supremacy. He gave into her after just a
few exchanges though, which brought that smile back to her face.
He was smiling as well and she assured him that they'd keep each
other safe and help each other adjust to the new world. They
didn't know what to expect and they weren't going to be
prepared, no matter what. They needed homes, places to fit in,
purposes. How does one like without purpose? Rey's purpose until
she nineteen was just to wait for someone who loved her to come
back for her. Afterward, it was to find Luke Skywalker. Then to
win the war. Now what? Ben was probably in an even worse
situation, his whole identity being changed in less than
twenty-four hours. He agreed with her, adding that he knew
everything would be alright as long as they were together. Her
expression softened at that and she nodded, agreeing, but she
wasn't sure why. Logically, it made no sense, but her heart knew
it was right. There was nothing to fear as long as they weren't
separated. He added that he would do what he could to atone.
"Just take things slow. I know it may be tempting to jump into
the swing of things and to try and rectify your mistakes, but
the Resistance needs time before they'll be willing to work with
us. We're going to need patience," she explained.
Once they finished eating, Rey was quick to insist that they get
some rest. They'd both had long, exhausting days. Obviously. It
felt more like a week than just a day anymore. But they needed
their sleep, their rest. Ben needed it more than her, but her
whole body was aching from all the fighting throughout the day.
They both could use a decent night's rest. She helped lay Ben
back down, using the button to lean back his bed, and she rolled
the table away from him. Once she was situated and she turned
the lights out, she leaned against the bed, her upper body
slumped over the side, careful to avoid his body so as not to
make him uncomfortable. She closed her eyes, letting out a
little breath, trying to sleep. But there were a few issues. For
one thing, she was extremely uncomfortable like this. She was
used to not having a pillow or a blanket -- no matter how
miserable it might have been -- but not to folding over to go to
sleep. She needed to stretch her legs. But sleeping on the floor
sounded rough. She wondered if Ben would be alright with
sharing, since she'd done it with Finn once or twice before he
and Poe started their relationship. It never meant anything
romantic. Even if Rey wanted it to be something romantic with
Ben. But there was no way she could sleep like this and her back
was going to be horribly sore if she didn't do something about
it. Sleeping on the floor just wasn't going to happen, not with
the cold med bay floors. She was used to being cold while she
slept, but if she could avoid it, she would. By all means. She
raised her head up once more, glancing over to see if Ben was
asleep. He didn't appear to be and it had only been a few
minutes since they laid down, so she was sure everything was
fine. She yawned. "Ben?" she asked. "I don't mean to impose, and
you can say no if it's too much, but would you mind if I got in
the bed and slept next to you?" she asked.

Rey ended up forgiving him for offending her while stupidly
commenting on her eating habits, the two of them relating over
their lack of social skills. It was still hard for him to
imagine Rey ever struggling to talk with people or make friends,
but it did make sense, he supposed. Jakku probably hadn’t
offered her many situations in which she could casually converse
with people. They both turned back to their food, Ben enjoying
his soup before Rey spoke up once more, talking about living
arrangements. That was something that had been on his mind too,
but he would have never expected her to want to live together as
well. He wanted to accept right away, and he did confess that he
wanted to stay by her, but he had to express his reservations
about the idea. He was a war criminal now, one that all of the
people she'd be working with and spending time with hated and
rightfully wanted dead. He couldn't live openly as she could. It
would only cause problems that he wished to avoid. It would
likely be dangerous for her to live with him somewhere everyone
knew about, so he thought it would be best if he lied low alone
and she pretended to have nothing to do with him. It wasn't an
ideal situation, but he thought it would be the smartest and the
safest option. Rey kept assuring him that they'd be fine
together, that they could protect themselves just fine, but he
wanted to make sure that she realized that the people they'd
most likely need protection from would be her own friends and
comrades. However, she still didn't budge, insisting that her
friends wouldn't ask her to abandon someone she cared about. He
couldn't wrap his head around why she would risk so much for him
or why she cared for him, but he didn't ask, eventually giving
in to what they both wanted. Her smile returned, and he couldn't
help but smile as well, happy to have this chance with her. To
be able to stay with her. She kept assuring him that this is
what she wanted, and it all just seemed too good to be true. She
said that they could help keep each other safe and adjust to the
new world that they weren't quite ready for, and he agreed. He
knew he wasn't ready for whatever the galaxy held next for him,
but he was ready to be with Rey, he knew that much. His life
going forward was completely uncertain. He had just gotten his
old identity back, abandoned the life he had grown used to
living, killed his final tormentor... and lost the last member
of his bloodline. Things were certainly going to be different
for him from here on out, but he could face it all, he knew. As
long as he had Rey to remind him of who he was. He told her that
everything would be alright as long as they were together, and
he was grateful to see her expression soften before she nodded.
He added that he was going to do everything he could to right
his wrongs and atone, and she suggested he be patient. She said
that she knew it might be tempting to jump headfirst into
everything right now to try and correct his mistakes, but the
Resistance needed time before working with them. He nodded,
though the Resistance couldn't stop him from doing some work
behind the scenes if he could, and he hadn't been just referring
to the mistakes he had made that hurt the galaxy, but the ones
that had affected Rey personally as well. He could definitely
start working on trying to rectify his mistakes when it came to
her. She said they would need patience and he nodded, though he
wasn't a very patient man. "Right," he agreed.
They went back to eating once their discussion of living
arrangements was over, and Ben ate every last drop of his soup.
It was the first time he had finished a meal in weeks if memory
served him correctly, though he had surrendered his bread. Once
they were finished, Rey almost immediately suggested that they
get some rest. He didn't fight her, feeling exhausted from not
just the day, but from the entire cycle, it felt. He could
definitely use some rest, but first, he wanted out of the filthy
pants he was in. The medical droid came back in, and Rey went to
the bathroom, the droid helping him out of his pants and into
the ones that she had brought for them. They were grey, he
noticed, but he didn't mind. He just couldn't remember the last
time he had worn something other than black. It would have had
to of been the night he left Luke. The pants were comfortable. A
bit baggy, but comfortable, and he made sure to thank her for
them once it was safe enough for her to come back into the room.
The medical droid left again and Rey helped to lower his bed for
the night, moving his table out of the way. He tried to convince
her to sleep on the Falcon where she would be more comfortable,
but he knew that it was no use, and it wasn't. She,
unsurprisingly, insisted on staying by his side, turning off the
lights and sitting back in her chair. He didn't know what her
sleeping arrangements had been in the Resistance so far, or what
they had been like on Jakku, but he was sure that she couldn't
be comfortable the way she was sitting, hunched over onto the
edge of his bed. However, she made no complaints, closing her
eyes and letting out a quiet breath as she tried to go to sleep.
He looked away from her, figuring that he should do the same. He
quickly found, though, that even though his body was exhausted,
his mind was still very much awake, threatening to think about
things he had been trying to avoid as he closed his eyes.
Thankfully, his thoughts were interrupted once again by Rey's
voice saying his name. "Hm?" he asked, opening his eyes and
looking back over at her. He almost expected her to announce
that she was going to sleep in the Falcon after all, but she
surprised him for the umpteenth time that day, saying that she
didn't mean to impose, and he could say no, but she wanted to
know if he would mind if she slept with him. He suddenly tensed,
entirely caught off-guard by her question. Clearly, she had
nothing but innocent intentions and it would mean nothing, but
he couldn't understand how she could sound so calm about it. He
had never shared his bed with anyone, and if he said yes, he'd
be sharing it with the one person that he loved. "I-" he
stammered, trying his best to not think too much of it all. It
didn't mean anything. She just wanted to be comfortable, and he
wasn't about to refuse her of that. "Yes, that's fine," he told
her, in disbelief that this was actually happening. "Just a
moment," he requested, shifting over in the bed, ignoring how
his body ached in protest before he settled once again, lifting
up the blanket for her to slide on in. "Here," he said, letting
her know that he was ready for her now. Or, well, as ready as
he'd ever be. "Will this be enough room for you?" he asked her
as she climbed onto the bed. She was small, yes, but he was
rather large, and the bed wasn't exactly built for two people.
"I suppose we could always ask for another bed if needed," he
suggested, his heart practically pounding out of his
chest.

After Ben agreed -- finally -- to live with her when this was
all over, the two of them went back to eating. Feeling
self-conscious about how she ate in his presence, Rey tried to
slow down, to become more comfortable with the utensils she was
provided. Ben seemed to be enjoying the meal, which was good to
note. He was enjoying something, which was all that really
mattered. She did want to see him happy, to get to know Ben as
he truly was. She didn't like having all these memories of Kylo
Ren bouncing around in her brain when she looked at him. The man
who was in front of her was, in no way, Kylo Ren. There was a
certain softness to Ben Solo, a certainty about him that was
more powerful even than Kylo Ren's pride. They finished their
soup before Rey suggested they try to get some sleep. She was
more worried about Ben sleeping than she was about herself,
knowing that he'll heal much better if he's well-rested and
stays that way. But, if she were being honest, her wanting to go
to sleep wasn't all in a selfless attempt to have Ben feeling
better. It was largely because she was just so exhausted. Rey
felt like she'd spent the whole day drowning and just finally
breached the water's surface. She was so tired she didn't know
what to do with herself. She didn't know how to think properly
or proceed with anything, but she persevered for Ben's sake. He
needed her at the moment. She helped him lie down properly,
lowering his bed so that he was laying flat instead of sitting
up. Afterward, she turned off the light and folded herself over
the edge of the bed, her upper body pressed into the thin
mattress. It wasn't exactly comfortable, but it would have to
do. It was better than being on the floor and she wasn't about
to leave Ben alone, even as he suggested she go to the Falcon to
sleep. She didn't want him to be by himself and, more than that,
she didn't want him to be in any danger. With Finn and Poe not
too far away, she couldn't trust anyone with him. She needed to
protect him at all costs.
She closed her eyes, letting out a breath and trying desperately
to sleep. It wasn't uncommon that she had a hard time sleeping.
Sleeping by herself was difficult. It always had been. Sleeping
by herself in the cold was even harder, she'd endured that many
times. However, this was one of the oddest positions she'd ever
been in. That coupled with the chill of the med bay room and the
fact that she was so confused, so overcome with thoughts and
ideas, made it nearly impossible. Something had to change. She
lifted her head up, gently calling Ben's name before asking if
she could join him in bed. She made sure to preface it with the
fact that she didn't want to impose and that she'd be perfectly
fine if he rejected her. It would sting, but that was his right.
She wanted him to be comfortable and not feel that he needs to
sacrifice in order to repay her or anything. He had spent an
awfully long time talking about repaying her throughout his stay
here. He stammered for a second and her heart started to sink,
but he eventually gave her permission. She smiled softly at him.
"Thank you," she said. He asked for a moment, beginning to move.
"Please be careful. I don't want you to hurt yourself for me."
Again. He settled once he'd shifted positions, lifting up the
blanket for her. It was such a small, but sweet action, she
thought. She start climbing onto the bed, getting into a little
ball before she pushed her feet through the blanket, careful so
that their legs weren't touching or anything. It might be a
little difficult given how big he was and how small the bed was.
He asked if she had enough room and she nodded, eventually
settling down completely and lying down, facing him. "Yes, I
think so. Thank you," she said, hugging her side of the blanket
to her a little more. He said that they could get an extra bed
if they needed it, but she shook her head. "If it's alright with
you, I'd rather not trouble anyone. But if I'm making you
uncomfortable I can talk to someone," she said. She hoped he
didn't mean it. She was already starting to feel warm and snug
in this position, though she did find that she'd accidentally
settled closer to Ben than she originally intended. But he
wasn't stopping her. She scooted a little closer to him, eyes
drifting closed as she yawned. She rested her head on his
shoulder, her hands falling to his chest. "Is this alright?
You're so warm," she whispered.

With them deciding to live together out of the way, which was
still very surreal for him, they returned to their food. He was
too lost in how much he was actually enjoying his soup to
realize that Rey was eating slower now. It tasted familiar to
him. He supposed some in his situation might say that it tasted
like home, but he wasn't sure if he'd go that far. Not anymore.
Chandrila hadn't been his home for the majority of his life, and
he didn't really have a home anymore, but, as he had Rey had
just discussed, he would. Soon, perhaps. With her. It was nearly
overwhelming to think about. So much was changing for him all at
once, so he was trying his hardest to not think too much about
it all or else he might break. Just a few hours ago he had been
the Supreme Leader, Kylo Ren, and Rey had seemingly hated him.
Now he was Ben Solo... and he was safe, comfortable, and Rey
cared about him. They finished their food in relative silence,
and she didn't waste much time before suggesting that they get
some rest. He didn't fight her on it, knowing that they both
needed it, and even though he had spent a while being
unconscious, he still felt absolutely exhausted. He wasn't sure
if he had ever felt this exhausted before, and he was certain
that it had something to do with him slowly regaining lifeforce
again mixed with everything else that had transpired on this day
as well as this whole cycle. She helped him lower his bed down
once the medical droid had left after helping him change his
pants, throwing away his old ones. She turned off the lights,
sitting back down in her chair even though he had tried to
convince her to sleep on the Falcon for the night. She wasn't
having it though, and he wasn't about to spend the rest of the
night fighting her on it. She ended up folding herself over the
bed, which didn't look comfortable in the slightest, but then
again, he also wasn't sure how she was used to sleeping. Perhaps
this was more normal than he thought for her? He doubted it, but
she wasn't making any complaints.
He pulled his eyes away from her after she closed her, staring
up at the ceiling, doubting that he'd actually be able to get
any sleep despite his exhaustion. His mind was too awake, which
was a common occurrence for him, but tonight especially. There
was just too much for him to think about, too much to consider,
and too much to reflect on. He also had the lingering fear that
if he did fall asleep, he'd just be greeted with nightmares and
voices. It was unlikely that he'd experience any voices now that
all of his tormentors were gone but after dealing with them his
whole life, he couldn't imagine even one night or day without
them. His nightmares, on the other hand, he assumed would never
go away completely. There were too many memories to be plagued
by now. However, before he could even attempt to sleep, Rey was
calling out for him. He responded, listening as she asked if she
could sleep in his bed. With him. It was a surprising request,
to say the least, though she did add that he didn't have to
agree if he wasn't comfortable with it. It wasn't like he wasn't
comfortable with it, though, he was very, very comfortable with
it, but it was just... he hadn't shared his bed with anyone
before, and he especially hadn't shared it with someone that he
loved and wished to pursue a relationship with. He couldn't say
any of that, however. He stammered, not even sure what he was
going to say, but he wasn't going to refuse her. He couldn't
refuse her, and he could be an adult. He could acknowledge that
this didn't mean anything. Rey simply wished to just be
comfortable for the night. He agreed to let her join him, and
she thanked him. "Of course," he said quietly, a bit tense as he
asked for her to wait a moment, shifting over in the bed to make
more room for her even though his body protested. She warned him
not to hurt himself for her, but he shook his head, settling
back down. "I'm fine," he insisted, somewhat absentmindedly
lifting the blanket for her. He figured she'd want to sleep
under it. He watched as she began to climb into the bed with
him, his heart racing like an idiot, thinking the way she curled
into a ball before sliding under the blanket was adorable. He
could feel her body heat already. Concerned, he asked if she had
enough room, and she nodded lying down and facing him. He had
expected her to face the other way, but he said nothing about it
even though it only made him more nervous. He was afraid to move
at all, scared that he might touch her in some way. She
confirmed that she had enough room, thanking him again. He
nodded, watching her hug the blanket to her. He suggested that
they ask for another bed if she needed it, but she shook her
head, saying that if it was alright with him, she'd rather not
trouble anyone. Right. Of course. She added if she was making
him uncomfortable, though, she could talk to someone. "No, no...
I'm not uncomfortable," he assured her, believing it to be true.
In fact, with her beside him, so close to him, he felt even more
comfortable, and that was what was unnerving. He was itching to
be even closer to her now, wanting to reach out and touch her
hand, her face, her hair, her lips. She scooted closer to him
with that thought, as if she could read his mind more than he
had realized, and he couldn't help but stare as she yawned,
placing her head on his shoulder and her hands touching his
chest. His breath quietly hitched in his throat for a moment.
This didn't feel real, and yet, it felt too real. She was warm,
and he could feel her breath against his skin, her touch gentle
and light. She asked if this was alright, saying that he was
warm, sounding almost wistful about it. Quickly, he began to
heat himself up a little more, even though he had been
comfortable, using the Force to do so. If she liked it, then he
would continue to do it. At least, until she fell asleep. "This
is fine," he said quietly, his voice barely above a whisper. His
arm, however, was completely stiff between them, and he feared
that it may end up falling asleep. "Can I… put my arm around
you? I feel as though I may be a bit more comfortable that way,
but it’s not necessary if that is too much," he asked, grateful
that it was dark so that she couldn't see the blush on his face
that he knew that he had.

She helped Ben arrange himself as much as she could without
hurting him, leaning the bed back so that he was lying flat on
his back, which she knew would be the ideal position for him in
his condition. He couldn't turn on his side or anything with the
way his ribs were. In fact, he shouldn't be moving at all in the
state he was in. She made sure he was as comfortable as he could
be before she walked over to the light switch, flipping it off
and letting the room go dark. She walked back over the chair,
insisting that she was going to stay by Ben's side tonight,
despite him pestering her about sleeping on the Falcon instead.
While she knew it would be more comfortable to be on one of the
cots in the crew quarters, she couldn't bring herself to do it.
She couldn't leave Ben alone. He shouldn't be alone after the
day he'd had. More than that, it was unsafe for him to be alone.
Finn and Poe would jump at the chance to take action and take
him away from her, which she simply wouldn't tolerate. She
folded herself over the bed instead, just trying to find a way
to get comfortable. It wasn't working. It was chilly in the room
and, more than that, it was really difficult to fall asleep
unless she was laying down. Despite only sleeping in a hammock
on Jakku, shivering from the cold, she'd never had to try and
sleep in an awkward, bent position like this. She closed her
eyes anyway, determined to make it work somehow. She wasn't
leaving him. After a moment of attempting all of this, she
eventually gave up, knowing that something would have to change.
She listened her head up, asking if Ben would be willing to
share his bed with her for the night. She made it clear that he
could reject her and she would be perfectly fine. Though she did
hope that he'd let her in. Even if he wasn't viewing it from a
romantic aspect, sleeping next to someone was calming, she
always thought.
He agreed, much to her surprise. Though he did stammer a bit
before finishing his sentence. She thanked him and he shrugged
it off, which was nice. She still felt like she might have been
imposing, but he wasn't mad about it in the slightest. Or, if he
wasn't, he wasn't letting her know. He asked for a moment,
shifting a bit in the bed, which immediately caused her to speak
up once more, asking that he be careful. She didn't need him
overexerting himself or hurting just because of her, but he
insisted that he was fine. He lifted the blanket up for her and
she thanked him once more, climbing into bed and curling up and
bit before pushing her feet through the covers so that they were
flat against the mattress. Already, she was beginning to feel
better. The blankets in the med bay and Ben's body heat already
starting to warm her up. She laid down completely, rolling over
so that she was facing him. It felt wrong to face the other way,
though she couldn't explain why. She tugged the blanket up,
hugging it closer to her as she settled in, being careful to
avoid their legs brushing together for fear that he might be
unhappy with it. She nodded when he asked if she had enough room
and he suggested they get a second bed for her. She didn't want
to do that, but she would if he wanted her to. She said as much,
adding that she'd talk to someone if he was uncomfortable, but
he insisted that he wasn't uncomfortable, even if he was a
little hesitant. At his admission, she felt more at ease, more
comfortable to scoot closer to him, resting her head against his
shoulder and her arms on his chest, just wanting to get warmer.
She let out a yawn, her muscles already starting to relax. She
asked if this was alright, adding that he was just so warm,
which she was. She noticed, after just a moment, that suddenly
he felt warmer, causing her to let out an -- albeit embarrassing
-- hum of content, eyes drifting closed as she nuzzled a little
closer. His arm was resting between them, which she thought was
a little odd. Before she could say anything, Ben -- still
hesitantly -- asked if he could put his arm around her. "Of
course you can," she said, waiting to feel even warmer once his
arm was looped around her. Her mind was starting to get foggy,
as if she was floating somehow. She couldn't explain it, but her
exhaustion was setting in. Really setting in. "Mmmhmmm, is
the.... hmmmm..... is the.... is the wahhter gone yet??" she
murmured, words not really sounding like words at all, more like
sleepy whines. "Where is my helmet?" she added, voice still lazy
and slurred. She woke up a bit more once she realized that she
wasn't making sense, that she was just saying stuff. "Sorry. I
don't think clearly when I'm sleepy," she said, glancing up at
him, though she couldn't see him well in the dark.

Ben did his best not to flinch as Rey helped to lower his bed
back down for him, getting ready to settle down for the night
and try to sleep. He shifted ever so slightly, getting
comfortable again and nodding when Rey checked on him, assuring
her that he was alright. She went to go turn out the lights,
unsurprisingly returning to his side after she did so to sleep
in the chair she had been sitting in. He tried convincing her to
sleep elsewhere, knowing that the beds on the Falcon would be
much more comfortable for her, but she refused. As stubborn as
ever, she wasn't going to leave him alone, and he wasn't
going to argue with her again. If she thought she could sleep
okay in a chair, then he wouldn't question her any further.
However, as she sat down, folding herself partially onto his
bed, avoiding touching him, he couldn't see how she could
possibly be comfortable. She certainly wouldn't be in the
morning with how her back and neck were positioned. He was about
to insist that she sleep on the Falcon, but she let out a
breath, closing her eyes. He pursed his lips, looking back up at
the ceiling, doubting that he'd be able to fall asleep even
though he felt exhausted. He had always had trouble falling
asleep, and tonight was apparently going to be no exception as
his head flooded with thoughts. He thought of the past cycle
that he had had, the past day he had had, and his mother, of
course. It always came back to his mother. He thought about some
of the nightmares he had been having, and the voices that had
plagued his mind every day until now. He was certain that even
if he did sleep, it wouldn't be a peaceful one. However,
before he could think too deeply about anything, Rey lifted up
her head, calling out his name and asking if she could sleep in
the bed with him, only if he was fine with it.
He tensed at her question, caught off-guard by it. The day had
already been filled with more twists and turns than he thought
he could handle, and now the woman that he loved was asking to
sleep beside him. He knew that it wouldn't mean anything
romantic, but that didn't stop his heart from beating fast
at the thought of her lying so close beside him. He stammered
for a moment before granting her permission, though, knowing
that he wouldn't be able to turn her down. She needed to
sleep somewhere more comfortable, and she didn't want to
leave him, so he supposed this was one of the best solutions. He
just couldn't understand how she could be so casual about
it. Had she been sharing a bed with someone while staying in the
Resistance? Was this normal for her? He didn't want to think
too much about any of that either. She thanked him and he
brushed it off, asking her to give him a moment as he scooted
over in the bed to give her some room. He felt some pain from
doing so, but he knew that it would ease once more. She warned
him to be careful, not wishing for him to hurt himself, but he,
for the umpteenth time that day, assured her that he was fine.
He lifted the blanket for her, giving her permission to go ahead
and climb into the bed. She thanked him again and he nodded,
watching her get up onto the bed and curl into a ball as she
slid her feet under the blanket. It was adorable to witness, but
his heartbeat only quickened as he could already feel just how
warm she was. She laid down and then turned to face him, which
was another unexpected surprise. He thought that surely she
wouldn't be so bold as to face him the entire night. Was she
truly that comfortable with all of this? She hugged the blanket
to herself and he asked her if she had enough room, to which she
nodded. He suggested that they get another bed for her to sleep
in, wanting to be absolutely certain that she was comfortable,
but she refused, unless he was uncomfortable. He told her that
he wasn't, and he believed it to be the truth. Strangely
enough, he didn't feel uncomfortable from all of this. He
felt... warm and safe and at ease, despite the beating in his
chest and the nervousness he felt from being so close to her.
She scooted closer to him, which he had secretly been wanting
but not thinking that it would actually happen. Then, the next
thing he knew, her head was on his shoulder and her hands were
on his chest. It felt incredibly intimate, and he felt like he
couldn't breathe for a split second, having never been in
such a position with someone before. Wasn't this somewhat
how couples would lie? Did she do this with anyone else? Once
again, he had to stop his train of thoughts. She yawned, asking
if all of this was alright, adding that he was warm. Almost
instinctively, he used the Force to warm himself further for
her, wishing to keep her as close and as comfortable as
possible. He told her it was fine, though he hoped she
couldn't hear how loud and how quick his heart was beating.
He wanted to touch her. He wanted to turn and face her, but he
knew he couldn't do that, nor could he kiss her. Then she
nuzzled against him, his fingers flexing in response, resisting
the urge to reach out. However, the arm that was trapped between
them was a bit uncomfortable. Hesitantly, he asked if he could
wrap his arm around her, adding that it wasn't necessary if
she didn't want him to.
She gave him permission, once again acting as if it was nothing,
and he wished he had the same carefree attitude as her. Slowly,
he slid his arm under her, able to feel her as he did so,
looping his arm around her waist. His hand landed between her
side and her stomach, and he didn't dare move it. Not at
first, at least, afraid that she would change her mind. She
began to speak again, but her words didn't make a whole lot
of sense, nor was most of what she said even words. She said
something about the water being gone and he raised a brow in
confusion, though she couldn't see. Her words continuing to
slur, she asked about a helmet, further confusing him. Well,
this certainly did shift the mood, not that he minded. "What are
you saying?" he asked with a light chuckle, amused. She
apologized, explaining that she didn't think clearly when
she was sleepy. Well, that certainly explained it, and he
thought that it was cute that she murmured such nonsense when
she was on the verge of sleep. It was something else he was
learning about her, and he had discovered that learning new
things about her was one of his favorite things to do. "I see,"
he said quietly, taking a risk and letting his hand slide up to
her shoulder, holding her a bit closer to him as he continued to
warm them both. "Get some sleep then," he urged her, still
staring up at the ceiling, in awe of just how warm and alive she
felt again him. The last time he had held her... it had been the
complete opposite. "Goodnight, Rey..." he whispered, feeling her
breath against him, relieved that it was there. Never did he
think he'd be this lucky. Never did he think that he'd
be so relieved to be living in such a moment. Relieved to be
alive. Carefully, he touched her hair, running his hand through
it, feeling how silky and soft it was. He felt a tightness in
his chest then, his heart finally slowed down. This was the
first time he could remember not feeling so alone as he lied in
bed, and it was the first time his mind wasn't in some sort
of dark place, hearing voices or fearing what the next day would
hold. He felt safe, warm, and loved, even though this
couldn't be what that was. Not for Rey, anyway, but it was
for him. He loved her. He loved her so much and she was here,
alive and wishing to be with him. She had even fought to be with
him, wanting a future with him, which is all he had ever wanted.
They were finally together, how things should be, and with one
last stroke through her hair and tears in his eyes, he lightly
pressed his lips to the top of her head, assuming she was asleep
before leaning back and closing his eyes.

She nuzzled into Ben a little bit, curling up right next to him,
her hands resting on his chest as her head lay on his shoulder.
Maybe she was being a little forward, a little more cuddly than
she should be, but she had kissed him earlier and he had yet to
complain, so she was assuming it was fine. It was an oddly
intimate position but, after all they'd been through
together, she didn't feel that it was out-of-place. In fact,
she felt rather comfortable lying against him, his body heat
soothing her and already lulling her into a half-sleep state.
She was so, so tired, so exhausted from all they'd been
through today. Her entire body ached from all she had endured,
from dying only to be brought back into this world by Ben Solo.
Yet, with Ben's arms wrapping around her, hand on her waist,
she felt safe, cared for. She felt like, for the first time in a
long time, she could rest. And, even if she didn't know what
tomorrow held, she knew it was brighter than anything in the
past. She muttered a few nonsensical phrases, wondering about
water, her helmet, even, two things that had nothing to do with
one another. She questioned herself and Ben chuckled, also
questioning her. She explained that, when she was very sleepy,
she tended to talk but say things that didn't make sense.
She was half-asleep and she knew it was probably not at all what
he was expecting. She hoped she didn't talk in her sleep and
say something she regretted, but she was simply too tired to
think about it or even such much, words failing her. She was
struggling so much to string two thoughts together, let alone
actual words and phrases to express her ideas. She felt his hand
slide up to her shoulder and she let out a nice sigh, once again
relaxing into him, soothed by how ridiculously warm he was. It
was unbelievable how he managed to get so warm so fast. He told
her to get some sleep and she nodded her head slowly, making an
odd noise in back of her throat and she turned her head a bit
more into his skin, almost burying her face in him without
thinking. He told her goodnight and, once more, she nodded,
humming contently. "Goodnight, Ben. Sweet dreams." As she
drifted off to sleep, she could have swore she felt something
soothing running through her hair and, just as the world faded
to black, lips against her head.
---
It was one of the best night's sleep she'd ever had, Rey
thought. Or, at least, that she could remember. She usually had
issues fallen asleep, usually feeling anxious or scared or
lonely or hungry or cold. Last night, however, all of her needs
were met. Her stomach was full and she was completely at ease
and warmer than she'd ever been trying to sleep. But, most
of all, she wasn't alone. And, for the first time ever, she
felt like she might never be alone again. Did she regret any of
her actions when she woke up in the morning? No. But was she
surprised by how she behaved? Yes, absolutely. She never meant
to cuddle up to him, to crawl into his bed and sleep in his
arms. She intended to stay fiercely independent, but she
couldn't do it. Or wouldn't do it, is more like it. But,
again, she didn't regret it. She wasn't mad about it in
the slightest and Ben didn't seem unhappy with it either.
Maybe he was though. Maybe she'd overstepped her boundaries
and he was just not telling her because he felt that he owed it
to her somehow. But that didn't seem to be the case, not
with how readily he gave into her request and how quick he was
to put an arm around her. She offered him an out several times,
doing what she could to absolutely make sure that he had every
chance to get ride of her. But he never did. She felt odd about
how she went about things, but she didn't feel bad about it.
But, just to be safe, she figured that it was best not to
mention it. If Ben wanted to talk about it, he'd bring it
up. But she didn't see the need in making him more
uncomfortable while he was trying to get better and heal from
his injuries. She got up, going down the cafeteria in order to
get them breakfast. She knew they'd need to eat and, after
Ben gave her his bread the night before, she figured he was
hungrier than she was. The breakfast that was offered was eggs
with nuna bacon and biscuits. She also grabbed some blue milk
and caf from the cafeteria, not sure which Ben would prefer. For
herself, she grabbed some juice, keeping it simple. After
experimenting slightly more with food since leaving Jakku, she
found that she enjoyed a lot of fruits, probably because of the
high water content.
She walked back into the room, turning on Ben's lights. She
pulled over the table once more, positioning it over his bed and
setting his food down for him. She then raised the incline on
his bed once more, helping him sit up so he could properly eat
his breakfast. It was relatively quiet as they ate, Rey going
absolutely bonkers on her meal, using her hands when she could,
just because she still wasn't completely comfortable with
utensils. She knew how to use them, but they always felt awkward
in her hands. Besides, bacon and biscuits weren't exactly
messy foods. She did need her fork for her eggs though, but she
still found that she was shoveling them into her mouth more than
anything. She drank her juice relatively quickly as well, only
paying attention to Ben once she'd actually finished her
food. When they were both done with their breakfast, she
gathered their dirty plates and took them back into the
cafeteria to be washed by the droids. She came back into the
room, taking a seat next to the bed once more. She didn't
know what to do or what to say, how to act. She knew she wanted
Ben to feel better, but she didn't know how to just talk.
What were they supposed to talk about? She knew that she wanted
to get to know Ben Solo, feeling like her life was incomplete
without an intimate knowledge of him. But how to go about that?
She didn't want to ask about his childhood or his life with
Luke or his times with Snoke. All of that seemed to traumatic
for her to just bring up like it was nothing. She needed to
approach this intelligently, slowly work her way up to the
other, more important things. "So, did you sleep well?"

Ben woke up to the feeling of warm breath on his chest, his hand
tangled in hair. His head was silent, no voices whatsoever, and
his body felt rested for the first time in cycles, though he
definitely felt as though he could keep on sleeping. He slowly
opened his eyes first, a tiny bit of sunlight peeking through
the window as he looked down seeing Rey still again him, her
hands on his chest, her head nuzzled against his shoulder. He
smiled lazily, running his hand through her hair a few more
times before resting his hand back on her waist and falling back
asleep. The next time he awoke, he felt Rey stirring, waking up
herself. He opened his eyes again, blinking a few times, still
content with sleeping even longer. He mumbled a good morning to
her, too sleepy to even really thinking about last night or the
way they had slept. He was just happy that he hadn't slept
alone, he discovered. He didn't feel alone. Rey announced that
she was going to get them breakfast, and he merely hummed in
response, already closing his eyes once more. He didn't fall
back asleep, but he did lie there and rest. After all, there
wasn't much more for him to do without Rey there. He noticed how
much colder he already felt without her there, missing her
gentle touch and her presence. He had been so comfortable
throughout the night, and he didn't even remember falling
asleep, but he knew that once she was beside him, it had come
easily to him. He hoped she wanted to sleep with him again
tonight, even if it did greatly confuse him. It was just that
the things that she said and did made him think that there was
something more to them than either one of them was admitting.
They had both accepted that they were a dyad and belonged
together, but he felt like there was more to it than that. He
knew there was on his side, but he felt like there were things
she wasn't telling him. She had kissed him. She had cuddled with
him. She had talked about how much she missed him and how she
wanted to live with him. He wanted to know what was going on.
What was really going on beyond I care about you. What was it
that she really wanted from him? What did she want him to be to
her? He needed some answers soon, but he needed to wake up a bit
more first and get some food into him, or else he may be a bit
too forceful.
When Rey returned, he opened his eyes yet again, making the
conscious effort to stay awake and start his day. His first full
day of being Ben Solo again. She turned on the lights, bringing
the rolling table over to him. She set his food down, and she
beat him to the controls on his bed, raising him up to eat. He
thanked her, looking down at the breakfast she had brought him.
There were eggs, nuna bacon, biscuits, and blue milk. He smiled
slightly at the sight. He hadn't had blue milk in quite some
time, but he remembered its flavor well. He reached for the
bacon first, happy to have some meat in the meal. His
breakfasts' were usually full of protein, needing it for his
workouts that he would not be doing with his broken bones. He'd
just have to work harder once he healed. Rey began eating
alongside him, and he couldn't help but glance at her
occasionally, smiling to himself as he continued to be amused by
how enthusiastically she ate everything, even if she was a bit
messy about it. They didn't really say much during their meal,
but the silence wasn't necessarily uncomfortable. They were
still just getting used to one another, and that was fine.
Hopefully soon, he'd know of more things to say to her and how
to converse better with her. He just needed to get to know her a
little more, he supposed, but he wasn't sure how to do that
either. Mentioning her past hadn't exactly gone well yesterday,
but perhaps he could ask her about some of her favorite things
today. He wanted to know if she had a favorite color, or if she
had chosen a favorite food yet or planet. When they finished
their food, Rey removed his dishes from his table, taking them
to the cafeteria and leaving him alone again temporarily. He
wondered if they would talk more easily to one another if they
established what was going on between them first. He assumed it
would be, but he still wasn't quite sure how to ask. He didn't
want to come off as harsh somehow or scare her off. Rey
returned, taking her seat beside him again. They sat there in
silence some more, and now it was starting to become a bit more
awkward since they had nothing else to do but talk to one
another. He tried to think of something to say that wouldn't be
too strange or random, but she beat him to the punch, asking if
he slept well. He nodded. "I did," he said, leaving out how he
had definitely only slept better because she had been sleeping
beside him, touching him and giving him constant assurance that
she was there and safe and that everything was going to be
alright. "I had almost forgotten what it felt like to sleep so
well, honestly," he admitted. "And you? Did you... sleep well?"
he asked her, hoping that she hadn't ended up regretting her
decision to sleep with him during the night or when she woke up.

She stirred, glancing up and smiling at Ben, his hand still on
her waist as he mumbled a groggy good morning to her. She wished
him a good morning as well, immediately taking it upon herself
to get out of bed and grab his breakfast. Eating the second you
woke up wasn't always ideal, Poe had told her once, but Ben
needed to eat. He nearly died yesterday and broke most of his
bones and was having a difficult time just being. Food would
help. Food always helps, right? Food and water. That's what
every human needs to survive, to feel better. She left the room,
grabbing Ben a plate from the cafeteria with eggs, nuna bacon,
and biscuits. She also grabbed him a glass of blue milk and a
cup of black caf, not sure which he would prefer or if he even
liked anything she grabbed for him. She thought the breakfast
was just generic enough for anyone to like and was still
confused as to why anyone would pass up food or drink at any
time. How do you just... not like something? You just reject a
biscuit because of the texture? No way in hell. She carried the
tray with both of their meals back into the room, flicking on
the light switch and setting them down on the rolling table
before situating it in front of him the way she did the night
before. She helped him elevate his bed so that he was sitting up
once more, wanting to make sure he was fin and situated and not
in any pain as she did so. He thanked her, earning a small smile
and a nod from her as she immediately took the seat next to his
bed, watching to make sure he ate. She would make sure that he
ate every single bite of his meal today, that he wouldn't give
any away to her to any reason. She wasn't starving. Well, that's
not true. She was actually quite hungry and after a few days of
having only her soup from last night to sustain her, she was
having a difficult time. But Ben's ribs were broken. He needed
it significantly more than her. He started with the meat first
and she made a mental note of that. He liked meat. Good.
Protein, that would help him recover, build more muscle mass.
He'd gotten quite skinnier since she say him over a cycle ago
and needed to regain his strength.
She dug into her own plate after a moment, satisfied with how
Ben was proceeding with his own meal and feeling like she'd done
a good job of setting him off in the right direction. Was she
being classy? No, not particularly. She wasn't used to utensils
and didn't like using them unless she had to. She dug into the
bread first, taking bites of the bacon and a spoonful of egg
every now and then. She knew that a lot of the soldiers
complained about hospital food, but Rey didn't understand it.
This stuff -- particularly the bacon -- was absolutely divine.
The mesh of flavors in her mouth was unlike anything she'd ever
experienced on Jakku. And it was enough to sustain healthy life.
What more could you ask for? After they finished eating
breakfast, she gathered their dishes and took them back to the
cafeteria, wanting to make sure the room was at least somewhat
clean for him. Having a messy room was tolerable for a little
while, but she knew how bothersome it could be if your space
wasn't properly taken care of. There was a silence that fell
over them for a little bit, one that was both comfortable and
uncomfortable, if such a thing was possible. Oddly enough, it
felt fine sitting with him without talking. But she knew it was
supposed to be uncomfortable and awkward, which made her
uncomfortable and awkward. It was a vicious cycle. After a
moment, she finally spoke up, making polite conversation by
asking how he slept. He slept well, apparently, admitting that
he had forgotten what it felt like to sleep that well. Her
expression softened a bit. She wondered why, what happened to
him while he was with the First Order that made it so hard to
sleep? He had taunted her about her trouble sleeping in the
past, which lead her to believe it was easier for him than it
was for her. Now, she wasn't so sure. "Hopefully, you'll sleep
like that much more often now. Now that you're safe and with
people who will take care of you," she said gently, not sure of
how he was treated, but knowing from the way he dealt with
Snoke, that it couldn't be good. He asked her if she slept well
and she nodded. "I know a lot of people blame the thin blankets,
but I always have trouble staying warm when I go to sleep. I
didn't last night. It was... nice," she admitted.
