What On Earth?! - A Pokemon Fanfiction ~Rivulet~
By: Rivulet Date: August 14, 2017, 5:42 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Even tho you soundly slept through it, like everyone else in
this town, the ground shook and lampposts flickered. With a
shattering echo that no one but a single soul heard, a portal
slammed itself shut as a young girl dived through it. She held a
few red and white balls to her chest, sighing in relief.
Violet Bridgette woke up that morning into her normal routine.
Wash up, get dressed, eat breakfast, pack up. What she wasn't
execpting that morning was her best friend to show up at the
door. Maria Allison stood on Violet's shaggy welcome mat, ragged
and half asleep, tho her eyes were brimming with exciment.
Violet was instantly worried about her old friend. Maria's brown
hair, normally curled into a tight bun, was knotted and frizzy.
Her lab coat was torn and ripped, and the bags under her eyes
looked like she hadn't gotten a wink of sleep last night. "Are
you OK?" Violet gasped and tried to pull Maria inside. She held
her feet firmly to the ground, and didn't budge off the welcome
mat no matter how hard Violet tugged on her arms. "I've never
felt better Violet!" Maria squealed with delight. "I have to
show you something that will blow your mind forever! Can you
keep a secret?"
Keep a secret? The words echoed in Violet's head. Maria has
never asked her that before. She usually just pulled Violet into
a closest or somewhere quiet and blurted everything out like she
couldn't hold it in a second longer. Violet knew better then to
question her friend in this state, so she just rolled with it.
"Yes, you know i can." Before she has finished speaking, Maria
grabbed Violet by the wrist and pulled her across the street.
Maria's house looked untouched, and Violet knew that meant
Maria's parents were on one of there expeditions. Maria had her
own sort of OCD, and the house normally looked cleaner when they
were away since she had more time to clean.
Maria placed a hand on the doorknob to the basement, tho she
turned to Violet instead of opening the door. One of her quirky
experiments? Violet thought about how Maria had turned her
parents unfinished basement into a science lab for her projects.
Must be. she confirmed when Maria started to talk crazy again.
"What i'm about to show you is defying all laws of the universe.
Promise me you won't say a word to anyone else, ever, about
this." Maria said in a deep, serious tone that made Violet
absolutely sure her friend had gone nuts. "Promise." Violet said
nervously.
This has to be much worse. Did she kill someone?! Violet thought
as the best friends trod down the steps to the basement. Maria
rushed ahead. She went ahead to key in the passcode to the lab,
and rushed inside, not waiting a second for Violet to catch up.
Violet was always suprised by the high tech feeling of the large
room, with solid white walls and floors that could blind her to
the four massive super computers on the left wall. Maria stood
in front of one of her computers and pulled up a familiar image.
"You remember this?" Maria said and pointed to the picture. "Of
course. It's Pikachu. Why would i not remember it?" Violet
shrugged.
Violet remembered how the two girls had became friends. They
were both ten years old. Violet was like the image of a bad
girl, all black clothes and purple dyed hair up in a long pony
tail. Maria was the opposite, dressed in plad and preppy
clothes, and her big green glasses, Maria had straight A's for
as long as Violet could remember. The two girls had nothing in
common besides 2 things. The first, they both didn't have a
friend in the world. Every day at lunch they where the only kids
that sat alone and silently ate there food. Violet eventually
just came up and asked if they could sit together, and they were
friends ever since. The second, they were probably the worlds
biggest Pokemon fans. Maria could list every region's pokedex by
memory and Violet played every Pokemon video game in the world
and watched every season of the TV show. It was what help there
friendship grow as strong as it is today. They even looked
exactly the same as there 10 year old selves, tho they were more
mature. Well, as mature as 15 year olds' can get.
The memory of it all was sparked by the picture up on the
screen, so vividly that Violet only just noticed the cheeky grin
on Maria's face. "Go in the testing chamber." Maria directed,
without loosing her grin. Violet self conciously entered the
password for the testing chamber and walked inside.
It was a wreck. The walls were widely cracked and everything in
the room was broken in some way. "What did this?!" Violet
shouted and turned to look at Maria. Maria answered cheekily,
"An experiment, a portal." Violet shivered at the way Maria said
portal. That, was what had torn the room to shreds. Violet was
sure of it now.
Suddenly a thought entered Violet's head that she just had to
blurt out. "A portal to where?" When Violet turned to ask Maria,
she noticed something glinting in the palm of Maria's hand. It
was a Pokeball. "Why did you get your collectible realistic
Pokeball out of it's case?" Violet asked, but she had a shaking
suspition that wasn't what was in Maria's hand. "It's not just
realistic, Violet. It's real."

Violet wanted to shake her head in disbelief, but it all felt to
real. Maria just stood there and grinned. "I opened a portal to
the Pokemon world, Violet. I could only get these two though, in
the time that i had." Maria explained. "The portal was too
unstable. I had to get my hands of some Pokeballs, catch as many
Pokemon as i could, and get back through the portal before it
collapsed on itself. I'm so sorry i didn't have time to take you
with me. It was Amazing there." Violet gawked at Maria as she
pulled another Pokeball out of her lab coat pocket. "I only got
two before i had to leave... One for each of us at least." Maria
tossed Violet the first Pokeball. "Violet cupped it in her
hands, speechless. "Violet, don't you know what this means? Were
the worlds first Pokemon trainers!" Maria clapped her hands
together and jumped. "I thought cutting a hole in dimensional
space has to do something with (scientific explanation i'm not
smart enough to write), and thanks to that hunch, we got
Pokemon! The hardest part was figuring out how to target a
single dimensional thread and only cut open that one." Violet
was unfazed by Maria's science blabber, she normally just tuned
it out. "What Pokemon did you get?" Violet glanced back down to
the red and white ball in her palms. "Open your and find out."
Maria snickered and stood back a few paces. "Why are you backing
up?" Questioned Violet. "Oh yeah, your Pokemon is huge." Maria
shrugged. Violet didn't know what to say, so she just opened the
Pokeball as quickly as possible before she thought twice. In a
white flash, a Tauros appeared. Violet fell backward, clutching
the empty Pokeball to her chest. Tauros huffed and bent down to
sniff Violet. "Tauros, this is the girl i told you about, she's
your partner now." Maria said and stroked Tauros's fluffy brown
mane. "Taur-tauros." Violet's new partner grunted and nuzzled
her face. "Awww, he's so sweet." Maria giggled and watched
Tauros gentle pull Violet back onto her feet. "So it's a he?"
Asked Violet. "Violet, you know Tauros are 100% male." Maria
said matter-of-factly. "Oh, right, i forgot." Violet huffed and
reached out to pet Tauros herself. "What Pokemon did you get
Maria?" Violet glanced back at the Pokeball in Maria's hand.
Maria just grinned and tossed up her pokeball. A much smaller
Pokemon appeared, a Ralts. "Awww, you got a cute one." Violet
said, but Tauros nudged her not so softly. "OK, OK, i guess your
cute too." Violet scratched Tauros under the chin, and he seemed
satisfied with that. "Ralts." Squeaked Maria's Pokemon and
Ralt's waddled over to tug on Maria's torn lab coat. Maria
picked Ralts up in response and held her in her arms."So, what
do we do now?" Asked Violet.

---------------------------------------------------------
Maria blinked. What do we do now? I guess i never thought that
far ahead. "I don't know. I was so excited when i successfully
opened the portal i didn't think about anything else. Maybe
that's why i brought you here, Violet. I knew i could trust you,
and you've always been so good at thinking stuff through. You
have the cunning of a wanted criminal that's always one step
ahead of authorities. And we might just need that." Maria
searched Violet's face uncertainly. This must be hard for her.
Maria had known for weeks how close she'd been to success, she
knew what lay around the corner ahead of time. Violet was
probably having trouble processing it all, it was a direct
suprise. Violet eventually replied, "Why? Why on earth would we
need that skill of mine. Maria, what did you do?!"
Violet seemed genuinely worried, so Maria decided the truth was
best. "Theres a 43% chance that a government facility picked up
the rift activity on there systems, despite my cloaking gear. If
it's it's true, we only have a few hours before they arrive to
investigate." She knew this would be a big shock to Violet. She
was an accomplice to a possible crime now. Maybe she shouldn't
have grabbed Violet before she had a plan. Maybe she shouldn't
have grabbed Violet at all. No. Maria thought. Violet was one of
the sneakiest, bravest kid she knew. Maria would need Violet's
help. "Alright. Two plans. One. We cover up any damage the
portal might have caused and go to school like normal. So, when
and if the government come here, they won't see anything out of
the ordinary and leave. Two. My uncle has a cabin at the top of
town stocked with extra food and water, we can hide there until
you parents come back-" Violet had spoken to soon. The familiar
sound of the front door swinging open was audible even in the
basement. Maria recognized to two sets of thumping foot prints,
one heavy that made the floor slightly creak and a much lighter
pair that barely made a dent. Maria had expected this to happen
years ago during other experiments. The plans were to change the
passcode on the door so her parents couldn't get in and climb
out one of the small window slits. The other was to go up and
distract them from going into the lab until she could hide her
project. The first one was obviously a better option because you
couldn't hide 200 dollars of concrete damage in 5 minutes.
Violet had known the plans for a while and obviously thought the
same thing, because she ran out of the testing chamber. Maria
followed.
While Violet wrenched open one of the small window slits, Maria
hurriedly typed away on one of her giant computers and worked
fast to change to passcode. The main doors password has been
change as well as the door to the testing chamber. The both were
different this time, so even if Maria's parents figured out the
first i'd take much more to open the second where the real
secret was hiding. While Violet continued to work the window
open inch by inch, Maria covered up the small viewing window in
the main lab with her torn lab coat. She then used her Pokeball
to return her Ralts. Before they left, Violet did the same with
Tauros, and then Maria boosted her friend up and out of the
window onto her dewy lawn. Violet pulled her up by her arms and
the two girls successfully got out onto the front lawn.
As Violet worked to close the window back up, Maria made her way
around the house to open her bedroom window and crawl through.
She could she see parents in the kitchen looking at some of the
maps they sketched through the slit in her bedroom door. Good,
they haven't started to look for me yet. Maria thought and
grabbed her backpack, stuffed her journal and a pencil inside
it, as well as a change of clothes. She's be set. Before
soundlessly climbing back through the window she left a note on
her pillow, telling her parents Violet had asked her to come to
school early to help her fill water balloons for who knows what.
It was a lie, yes, but a believable one.

The two girls walked side by side. Violet took time to process,
while Maria tapped away on her phone. "Maria. I think I'm OK
now. So, can you tell me exactly what your doing on your phone?"
Violet asked with a grin. "Sure, Violet," Maria replied,
"Texting Benny to be ready when we show up at his front door, on
the way to school" Violet stopped walking. "You did what?!"
Benny was a boy a bit younger then Violet. Brown hair, freckles,
glasses, nerdy. Nothing out of the ordinary besides him having a
huge crush on Violet. "Why?!" She yelled and gave Maria a light
punch in the shoulder. "Because. He loves you, you know he'll do
anything you ask. He can be a good cover. He can vouch for us."
Violet shrugged. She honestly didn't care anymore. Benny had
been following her for 2 years, hanging on every last word of
hers. Violet could see sense in Maria's logic. He would be good
cover. "As a scientist, I can prove why he loves you, and why he
hasn't given up." Maria said matter-of-factly. It peaked
Violet's interest enough for her to ask, "Really?"
"Yes, indeed." Maria looked up from her phone. "Benny sees you
as an intimidating bad girl. He probably takes days to work up
the courage to ask you out every time. You ever notice how he
only does it when I'm with you? I believe that because your
intimidating, he thought you'd never ask a geek like him out.
But, when he learned you were my friend, doors opened up. He
probably thought that a delinquent such as yourself wouldn't
bother to talk with a geek. But, you are my best friend, and I
am respectively in the same social class as Benny. He thinks
because you found something in common with a geek such as
myself, he had a much better chance at winning your affection."
Maria finished by clicking the send button on the text.
Violet took a chance to think everything over, and yet again
Maria made sense in her logic. "Yeah, but that thing we have in
common is Pokémon." Violet said and self awarely glanced at the
pocket where her Tauros's Pokéball was hidden. "Yes, it is. So I
told him. Benny wants to have something in common with you so
he's been memorizing all the Pokémon and watching the TV show.
He says he's intrigued by it." Maria said.
Violet just then realized that what had brought Maria to be her
best friend, a boy that likes her had gained the same interest.
It almost made her blush. Almost.
They reached Benny's front door soon enough, and you could see a
face peeking out of the front window. The shutters jingled
lightly as the figure of a boy moved, and opened the door
seconds later. "H-hi! W-what brings you here Violet? You've
never came to m-my house before." Benny stuttered and severely
blushed, rosy red rising up on his cheeks. Maria answered,
saving Violet some awkwardness. "We're going to school early. We
thought you might want to go with us." Maria said
sophisticatedly. Benny's hazel-brown eyes lit up. "I-i would
love to! Make yourself at home!" He said and ran off farther
into his house. Maria went in and sat on the couch, and Violet
sat down next to her. An older girl that Violet recognized as
Benny's older, 17 year old sister Martha walked in. She looked
surprised for a moment at the two strangers in her living room,
but her face sparked with interest soon enough. "Your Violet,
aren't you? Ben's description is spot on." Violet nodded as
Martha continued. "So, you finally came around?" Violet flinched
back, and Maria answered, "My friend here hasn't quite yet."
Maria made a wink at Martha that Violet didn't see. Martha
understood, and started to walk away. "Well imma cook waffles.
Bye." Martha said and walked into the kitchen.
Benny came back dressed in a white blazer with a striped green
tie, black pants, and green socks. Obviously, this was another
attempt to impress Violet, since her favorite color was green.
As Benny approached, his face flooded once again with rosy red.
He held out a bouquet of artificially green dyed roses to
Violet. Violet felt the need to accept them, and she placed them
on her lap. Maria interrupted the awkward silence after a few
moments, "We should get going. Come on." Maria said and ushered
both Violet and Benny along and out the front door.

Everyone walked together in silence, Maria placed in between
Violet and Benny.
When they reached the school, the sun not quite over the
horizon, Maria opened her backpack and rummaged through it.
Violet could hear the parts of various machines clinking
together. Maria pulled out an odd looking key card, and swiped
it through the lock. It buzzed no twice. Before the third
attempt, she blew on it and fiddled with the key bar. Swiping
for a third time, you could a clicking noise as the door
unlocked, and Maria opened the door. She put the Key Card around
her neck with a lanyard and held the door open for Benny and
Violet. "I didn't know the school gave you a Key Card," Violet
commented. Maria snickered, "They didn't. It's a proto-type, but
this device is supposed to analyze the electronic lock on the
first time, then change its pattern to match the correct one on
the second swipe. It shouldn't have taken three times tho. Needs
work." Benny looked at the Key Card with amazement.
Maria lead them through the dark school hallways. "Can't we turn
on the lights?" Benny muttered and looked over his shoulder, as
if expecting to see someone stalking them. "No," Violet flash an
annoyed look at the ground before looking at his shining eyes
through the dimly lit halls. "If we turn on the lights, someone
from outside might see us, think there's a break in, and call
the cops." Benny looked thoughtful for a moment before asking
another rock-headed question, "But can't we just tell them
what's going on?" Violet facepalmed, and even Maria had to role
her eyes. "This is government property Benny," Maria spoke up,
"We already may have our troubles with them. I cant risk it. Tho
I think I might have Night Vision goggles in here somewhere."
Maria finished with a tap on her backpack, which jingled with
the sound of different metal parts clanking together. Benny look
at each of them nervously, the shrugged. "Y-yeah, whatever, you
guys sound like you have a plan." Violet saw right through his
stutter, and didn't know what she was raising her hand for until
she gently patted him on the back. "Don't worry. If its me and
Mary, we always have a plan."
That wasn't a lie, Maria had come up with like, what? 9 plans?
And before she had even ran to Violet's house that morning. Then
Violet noticed she hadn't removed her hand from Benny's back,
and it had been there for several moments. She jerked it away
and awkwardly back to her side. Violet saw sharp disappointment
in his eyes, but it faded somewhat quickly. Is he that used to
being disappointed with me?

Maria looked up from the calculations she was making on her
phone. Do those two have to be any more obvious? She put the
phone back in her pocket and decided to give Violet another push
in the right direction.
"I'm going to the science lab. Violet, can you find some spare
wires? Benny, come with me." Violet walked off, and Benny
hesitantly watched her go before following Maria into the lab.
She took a metallic device out from her backpack. Along with it,
several spare wires. Benny looked confused and spoke up. "It
looks like you have enough wires. Or does this thing need a
lot?" He said and rubbed his arm. "I sent her on a wild goose
chase. The lab itself had plenty of spare wires. Look, I just
needed to tell you to not give up hope on her. She won't
understand she has love for you until you do something jurassic.
Violet will be in the south quarters of the school by now, go
tell her I have a lot on my mind right now and that I forgot the
lab had wires." Maria told him and began forcing a screwdriver
to tighten a screw on her device. Benny hesitated yet again, and
slowly walked out the door. Ignoring the ring of her phone,
Maria lost herself in perfecting her machine.
Violet pointed her flashlight at a wirebox in the janitor's
closest. Bingo. She raided it of wires to things she didn't
think were necessary. We have a pool? Well, good-bye hot tub
heating system. And I've always hated that rusty vent in Ms.
Harrison's class that only vents cold air. hearing a stumbling
noise, Violet whipped around at pointed her flashlight towards
the sound, hand protectively covering Tauros's Pokéball in her
pocket.
"Benny! I thought you were the the cops! Your louder then a
Chihuahua after the mailman." She exclaimed and ushered him
over. "Well, I did find a bunch of wires. Why are you over here
anyway? Does Mary need something else?"
Benny looked over his shoulder, then replied "S-she said she
actually has enough wires and doesn't need our help." Violet
looked at him, puzzled for a second. Benny's not lying. But
Maria has the memory of an elephant. Unless... This was a set up
to get us alone. Starring angrily at Benny for a few moments,
she finally decided that this wasn't his fault, and began to
walk with him down the dim hallways. "Did you know we had a pool
here?" Violet murmured, attempting to start conversation. "Yes.
Violet, we have the best swimming team in the district." Benny
replied.
The silence faltered when Violet spoke up. "You know, for a nerd
you don't act like one. I kinda like that. Maria rambles on
about scientific theory enough to make me faint."
Benny beamed. Then added, "You too. For a punk girl, your more
kind and brave then I thought you'd be at first glance. You have
a good heart and a strong one too." She didn't know how to reply
at first, and immediately pulled her hood over her head and
looked at her feet. But, she did something she didn't expect
herself to do. Violet smiled.
Please enjoy this beautiful trashyness of my writing.

Crash
Glass shattered as Army men and women jump through the shattered
windows, and Violet pushed Benny to the ground, stunned for a
moment. Maria! This is what she was talking about...
"Freeze and put your hands in the air!" One of them yelled and
pointed a gun at the two kids. The rest followed.
But there was no time for that, not if Violet wanted to get out
of here without cuffs. She snatched the Pokeball from her
pocket, but before she could release Tauros, Maria materialized
next to them both, grabbed them, and in a bright flash they
appeared in the other wing of the school.
Ralts was in Maria's arms, and she realized that must have been
Teleport. "Maria, what do we do now?" Violet asked.
Before she could answer, Benny screamed "What on Earth just
happened!?"
When Violet and Maria exchanged a glance and didn't answer,
Benny managed to looked more freaked out then he already was.
"Just be quiet and i'll explain later" Maria told him. "Ralts!"
Ralts greeted Benny and waved a stubby hand at him.
Benny stood there gawking.
"Violet, I'm not sure that Ralts can Teleport us to specific
spots. We were aiming for the park across the street after we
got you." Maria stated, then looked worriedly to the sound of
more windows breaking nearby. Violet replied, "Wait, in the
video games Ralts can Teleport to the last Pokémon Center
visited. Maybe Ralts just can't go to unfamiliar places. You
think they've reached your lab yet? She knows that place."
"Of course there at the lab! Why else would they be looking for
us?" Maria said shakily. It occurred to Violet for the first
time since that morning, that Maria still hadn't slept since
yesterday morning.
Benny did more gawking, obviously not sure how to react.

"We've gotta get out out here. They won't expect us to reach the
lab so quickly. The lab has to be better then here." Violet
reasoned. "I guess your right. Ralts, do you think you can reach
the lab?" Maria asked. "Ral-ralts" Ralts replied. Taking that as
a yes, Maria grabbed Benny and Violet closer and they were all
sent away in a flash of pink energy.
Violet opened her eyes after the flash. They were in the lab.
Teleporting would take some getting used to.
Suprisingly, nobody was there. "Maria, where is the government?"
Violet asked. Maria already happened to be checking the security
footage. "Nah, there here, it's just they haven't **** the
security code, there's seven of them outside the door, two
scientists and five guards, armed. They don't know were inside
though. Thankfully, we can listen to what there saying, and see
the feed." Maria was smirking again. It's cute when she's cocky
about her inventions, Violet thought.
Benny sat on the floor, looking less freaked out now but still
trying to process.
"How have we not opened this yet?" One of the scientists sighed
on the camera feed. "At least we have plenty of time, the SWAT
guys say Maria was spotted at school with two accomplices."
Replied a guard. "How the heck does a teenager get tech like
this? It's not like she could have built it herself, her file
says she gets C's and B's." "Eh, well, the Maria girl releases
off-world energy where ever she goes. It's thickest in here, so
there's no time to waste."
Maria had to sputter a laugh. There so dumb! Now i can go take a
shower and they won't be able to track me, though i guess every
time we release our Pokemon new energy will arise, that might be
a difficulty. Maria quickly double encrypted the pass-code on
the main door, then went to the closest to get a clean lab coat.

"Oh, right," Maria called out to Benny and Violet, "The walls
are mostly soundproof, though i wouldn't purposely scream at the
top of my lungs if i were you. Don't worry about them people
hearing you."
Violet joined Benny, slumped against the wall. "I know you
probably have questions, and i may be able to answer some. So...
I guess, shoot away." Violet said with a sigh. "If i had a
choice, i wouldn't have dragged you into this." Benny just
looked up at her and smiled. "It's okay Violet. I'm kinda glad
i've been able to spend some time with you for once. Even like
this."
"Benny, I-" He quickly drew Violet into a hug, cutting her off.
"I'm just happy to be with you." He whispered. Violet however,
was holding her arms out above her, not sure how to react. Did
she give into her quickened heartbeat, or push him away? Violet
didn't know.
Maria came around the corner, "Well look at you two." She said.
"I leave for three minutes and this is what happens. Well, I
guess now we don't have to worry about his loyalty." Maria
smirked. "Now Benny, how about after these dummies run away, we
get you a Pokémon of your own?"
"Really?" Benny's eyes lit up as he reluctantly let go of
Violet.
"That's saying they ever go away. And what about how unstable
the portal is?" Violet muttered and crossed her arms. "This
time, we'll be leaving Benny here, I'll have a rope tied around
you and he'll keep it secured." Violet opened her mouth to
protest but Maria continued anyway, "I know your worried about
me, but I want you to see what its like." Neither of them said
anything more and Maria pressed a button. On the camera feed,
the military people were now being shot with lasers. "Don't
worry, the lasers are on a two." The people seemed mostly
unharmed, scattering up the stairs and out of range of the red
beams. Scorch marks scarred the ground where they lasers had
struck.
