[Hatching] A New Path Awaits Us

The Confident Piccolo, small as it was, still showed a vigor and
exuberance as it hatched. The dark shell spilt neatly to release
its occupant onto the sand. The dragonet stretched, grateful to
be free from the confines that such a small egg entailed.

A green! Such a beautiful and delicate green!
Though graceful and sure in her step, she soon sensed all the
eyes on her. Ducking her head under one wing, she shuddered in
trepidation to meet the Candidates. Noticing her daughter's
hesitation, Haloneth gently nuzzled her forward, making a very
soothing and comforting noise. "I know it can be daunting, but
your bonded is out there somewhere; you just need to focus and
find them. Take your time should you need, but do not be afraid,
my little one."
Turning her gaze to her regal mother, the green cooed softly in
response, taking the advice given and settling on her haunches
close to her mother and hatching siblings. Overwhelmed, she
needed a moment to process and reach out, keeping her head down
and gaze averted from the Candidates.
Without waiting for its sibling to make up her mind, the
Theatrical Provocateur began to rattle like a tiger in a cage,
demanding an exit. Some Candidates drew back, alarmed. What was
in that thing that could make such a racket?

Candidate Meteion | New dragonet, next hatching egg
Meteion watched the very beautiful green when she hatched and
wanted to reach out and comfort her, as the green seemed so very
scared.. or perhaps she was very shy? The young woman was not
sure of which but she knew that she had to stay in place, let
the dragonet find her future bonded on her own. Forced
impressions were not okay, for either party and she would not
step forward, even as her heart clentched and she wanted to do..
something. Haloneth's calm reaction and simply allowing the
green to lay near her till she was ready soothed any real danger
concerns for the health of the new baby that Meteion might have
harbored, after all.. she would know if something was wrong
right?
The rather violent sounds of another egg hatching caught her
attention.. boy did that baby want out.
---------------------------------------------------------
Candidate Zathrian | Dragonet thoughts
Zathrian noted the interesting pattern on the green as she
hatched and hesitated. No.. such a reaction could mean two
things.. one, she was extremely timid and afraid and that could
end badly if she didnt find a bonded. Two... her bonded was just
simply not here.. but if not.. where was this idiot candidate?
How dare they risk the life of this dragonet and not make
themselves known?!
Disgust was clear on his face as he looked down the candidate
line.. who was missing, whose arse did he have to kick in?
Obviously this green was not his but who.. who was she to bond
to?

Candidate Anoirigan - next hatchling, mentions of Haloneth, next
egg thoughts
Noir felt his stomach twist and tighten, his heart squeezing as
the poor thing huddled close to Haloneth. Was it frightened? It
had seemed so sure when it first appeared from its egg...
Thankfully, Haloneth- the good clutchmother that she was-
comforted her offspring and allowed the little green to sit by
her side until it was ready. Noir smiled tenderly, silently
sending the little one his support. Meanwhile, the impatience of
the next egg startled him. He certainly didn't want to be in its
way!
Candidate Judiana - next hatchling- worry, panic, mentions of
Haloneth, next egg thoughts
Judiana nearly dashed forward as the little green - from the
very same egg she'd touched!- seemed to freeze with panic as it
spotted the Candidates. But she refrained, seeing Haloneth
comfort the hatchling. Panic swept through her heart at the
fright of the poor thing. It was a beautiful little one, and her
heart fluttered upon the sight of it. Was this her bonded
partner? Was this her moment? Oh... the suspense would be the
death of her! The sound of the next egg's rattling frightened
her. So impatient!

Theon - Reacting to Dragonet
Watching as the next egg hatched, he smiled at the beautiful
green like many others. It caught him by surprise as she seemed
to back away and get scared by all the candidates, yet it also
made sense. He could see how it could be intimidating to have to
find one's bonded and have so many eyes on you while doing it.
Thankfully Haloneth seemed to be handling it and comforted the
dragonet to allow her to take her time to impress. The action
wasn't one to take lightly after all, though part of him did
start to wonder if perhaps their bonded wasn't here. Fear of
that situation could result in being so bashful, but Theon tried
to hope that it was just the nature of the little green. Perhaps
after a few moments, she'd feel ready to go.
Besides that though, the egg that was starting to hatch next was
clearly of an opposing personality. He himself took a step back,
gaze following the egg with concern. It didn't seem like it was
going to wait, yet part of him hoped the dragonet that hatched
would keep to one of the other candidates. He couldn't tell much
of the personality, but if how they were hatching was any signs
then the resulting dragonet would be quite troublesome.

Weyrfolk Celia | In the Stands
Celia sat in the stands, picking at a loose thread on her
sleeve. She didn’t really want to be there. That morning after
breakfast she’d tried to slip away back to the gardens, but the
call had gone out about the hatching starting, and she found
herself caught up in the throng of excited Weyrfolk and swept
away towards the hatching grounds unable to break free. She
didn’t even have her fire lizard, Gilda, with her for company.
The feisty gold was probably still curled up on her pillow
asleep and awaiting her return from breakfast.
Now sitting in the corner farthest away from the action, she
hugged her knees to her chest. The crowd held it’s collective
breath as an egg hatched. She watched as a beautiful blue dragon
wobbled onto the sands followed shortly by another.
They really are quite cute. She thought fondly. For a moment she
imagined herself standing up with the other candidates. What
would she do if a freshly hatched dragon toddled over to her?
Doubtless she’d love it, she thought, after all she’d heard that
Impressing was as much a bond between dragon and man as it was
between man and dragon. Probably something to help ensure that
the new human caretaker would be compelled to feed and care for
it, she mused quietly.
She shook her head. It was not a life for her. Too many eyes on
candidates, too much pressure. Surely she’d crack open like a
dragon egg herself. Besides, if she was raising a dragon, who
would tend the gardens? The plots needed weeding and several
crops were almost ready for harvest. She’d been planning on
cutting some of her favorite flowers later and putting them in
her room.
She sighed to herself. Her father had told her that while the
life of a dragonrider was busy and chaotic, life of Weyrfolk
tended to be more peaceful and calm. That’s why she’d come to
Westwind, hopes of a life safe in the embrace of a Weyr, and the
quiet work of tending the gardens. Maybe Weyrlife wasn’t for
her if there were going to be constant events like this
disrupting her.
Again the crowd gasped and whispered as another egg hatched. The
green within tucking herself away behind Haloneth’s wing as if
overcome with shyness.
She glanced to the side. The exit was close. Perhaps she could
sneak out unnoticed. The crowd murmured as yet another egg
rocked and twitched, threatening to hatch. Celia knew her moment
to bolt out the door and back to the sanctity of the gardens
would happen any minute now. Everyone around her hadn’t even
noticed she wasn’t fully watching the hatching anymore.
Patience, she reminded herself. Wait for your moment to escape.

Candidate Melora - Zathrian, egg/hatchling responses
Melora ignored all Candidates around her, considering them
common rabble and poor choices for a dragonet. Why couldn't the
Weyr support more like herself? As the first egg yielded twin
blues, Melora elegantly arched a brow. Twins were not common,
but Haloneth would be one to give twins, she supposed.
A familiar voice spoke to her, causing her to turn her head to
regard Zathrian with no great hurry. Arching her brow even
higher at his hubris in speaking so blatantly to her, she
quipped: "I see. So you take yourself as some seasoned,
knowledgable Candidate? Well, might I remind you that you Stand
here, same as I; unbonded." While she grimaced in distaste at
the reminder, she added: "We were never friends in Benden, so I
do not see the point in being friends here, in Westwind. Be a
dear and take yourself and your insipid comments elsewhere."
Without another word, she turned her gaze to the eggs, to see a
green emerge and hide under her wings. Melora snorted softly.
What dragon would prove itself useful after showing such
cowardice and timidity? No. Some worthless Candidate would be
bonded to this worthless green, paving the way for her queen to
emerge. Melora had waited this long; what was a moment more?

Something...shifted for the green. At last, she was ready.
Looking up to her mother for support once more time, she picked
herself up from the sands and tiptoed timidly to investigate the
Candidates. Meiteon was afforded her gaze for some moments, as
well as Anoirigan and Judiana. The green shied from Zathrian and
Melora like she'd been stung. The green appeared to begin to
panic a moment, even rearing to her hindquarters with a bugle.
Was someone here for her?
The green dropped to all fours and paused, frozen for a moment.
What was happening? Would she...go between? After a moment, the
green looked to Haloneth, as though seeking the courage and
confidence to do what she must from her mother.
Haloneth shifted for a moment and nuzzled her tiny green
daughter warmly. "You can sense them, can't you? The warm rush
of comfort and peace in your mind. You know who you need. Take
the courage to take those steps...and go to the one who needs
you and you need them. I did it and I know you have it in you to
do so, my sweet daughter. Go forth. You are beautiful, you are
brave... You are strong...and you can do this."
The green arched into the touch, nuzzling Haloneth in return
with a low purr. With that, she trotted across the Sands,
sparing not another glance for the arrayed Candidates.
Scrambling into the Stands, she ambled about, seeking someone.
That hint of panic returned to her, evident in her anxious
padding amongst the spectators. Until...
Celia... the green murmured, her voice soft and gentle, almost
shy. Please do not go. Not yet. Not without me. I would be
yours; your Ragnath. Would you please be mine; my Celia?
Uncaring of the tender moment happening in the Stands, the
Theatrical Provocateur continued to shake and heave, the top
popping to allow a dark foreleg to stick through, clawing at the
rest of the shell. A loud roaring shriek came from the dragonet
inside, demanding release. May Faranth look upon whoever
Impressed that beast with mercy!

Haurchefant of [color=#f9b271]Gold Haloneth | Ragnath impression
; Hatching reaction
Haurchefant had been visibly worried about the timid green,
wondering where her human was and must have counted the
candidates at least ten times.. nope, they were all here. Was
something wrong? The last thing he wanted was to see a baby go
between, but thankfully.. Haloneth had the situation well in
hand again and he felt warmth towards her flood his form. She
was a wonderful force and he thought back to her own impression
and the scars it might have left on her, the attempted forcing
impression... and rubbed her side affectionally.
He rubbed his temples gently, fighting the pain forming behind
his eyes.. the lack of proper rest taking its toll in the form
of a migraine. This was definitely one moment he wished he had
T'ani's tea at hand... but he could not let himself appear
weakened.. no. He had to remain strong. His own pain could be
attended to after the hatching.

Weyrling Celia of Green Ragnath | Impression Reaction
Celia froze, halfway to the exit. The mood in the arena had
shifted suddenly and she felt the hair on the back of her neck
stand up. She glanced over her shoulder to see people parting,
and a small green dragon ambling towards her.
As the dragon approached, all eyes riveted to focus on Celia.
She felt panic rise unbidden in her chest, clawing at her
windpipe and threatening to choke her into silence. The crowd
buzzed like a swarm of angry hornets. What had she done to draw
their ire? Surely she would be punished for causing the dragon
to wander away from the candidates where her bonded most
certainly lay.
Celia clutched her hands over her ears and shrank into the
sands, gasping for air. As the world around her grew louder and
harder to breathe, everything became quiet. The voices of the
crowd vanished and her chest lighted. The dragon was speaking to
her.
" Please do not go. Not yet. Not without me. I would be yours;
your Ragnath. Would you please be mine; my Celia?"
The voice was soft and comforting. Celia uncurled her hands from
her ears and looked at the hatching. She had lain down on the
sands in front of Celia, tucking in her wings and curling her
tail around her body as if to be as small as possible.
Suddenly the Theatrical Provocateur egg split open with a
roaring screech! The crowd’s attention snapped around to focus
on it leaving Celia and Ragnath alone.
With a trembling hand Celia reached out towards the dragonets
snout, stopping and partially withdrawing for just a moment
before letting her hand rest on the warm, scaley nose.
---------------------------------------------------------
Blue Astralath | Impression reaction/egg
Astralath sat back down with a gusty sigh. He’d stood when
Ragnath had left Haloneth’s side, ready to escort his daughter
through the stands. And eat anyone who threatened her if need
be. He’d not taken more than two paces when she stopped and sat
beside a human who was halfway to the exit. He’d watched as
Ragnath made her plea, and when the crowd’s attention turned to
egg that was now hatching with a mighty scream, he waited until
the girl reached out and touched Ragnath.
He was relieved, his daughter was safe and would be loved. He
felt another swell of pride for his hatchlings, he would move
mountains for them. Astralath wondered idly if humans felt
similarly about their own hatchlings. He resolved to ask Cora
later.

Theon - Reacting to Impression
Trying to keep himself calm, his gaze again moves to the little
green dragonet that was now moving to hopefully find her bonded.
He was a bit confused when she didn't seem to choose any of the
candidates, yet it made more sense as the green moved to catch
up with someone trying to leave the sands. It was certainly a
surprising clutch to say the least; twins and now a noncandidate
impression? Not that it was a bad thing, just not what Theon
expected when he had come down to the hatching sands.
Despite wanting to continue to watch the two interact and see
the reaction from the selected bonded, his attention was soon
drawn towards the next hatching egg. It was loud and angry and
in all honesty and made Theon a bit fearful for whatever would
hatch out of it. Who would the aggressive dragonet impress to?
Would it attack anyone when it managed to hatch out of the egg?
He only hoped it ignored him. The candidate didn't know how he
would react if he caught its attention for any reason, good or
bad.
