Guide to Westwind Weyr
By: Agenothree Date: June 19, 2022, 9:10 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Established as a true Weyr early in 2612, albeit a small one,
Westwind is a name that has tongues wagging on the Northern
Continent. With the hatching and Impression of gold Haloneth to
Haurchefant in 2610, Tradition has found itself thoroughly
challenged, and Benden Weyr was not safe for the young queen. As
a result, Haloneth and those who sought change fled the Weyr by
night, arriving on the Western Continent at the end of their
journey. The settlement grew around Haloneth and the dragons
loyal to her, and it was decided in short order that they were a
Weyr, no matter the size of the territory they flew or the
numbers they boasted. This was a place for new life to bloom,
and they would make the most of it.
Westwind Weyr is located on the western side of the Western
Continent, west of the Western Channel that separates the two
quadrants of the continent. A large river system flows across
the Western Quadrant, and the Weyr is placed strategically close
to one of the river's off-shoots, as well as within reach of the
main river itself. As such, water is easily accessible, as well
as a minor supply of food in the form of fish, and the mode of
transportation a waterway provides. The Weyr itself sits within
a small mountain, with weyrs painstakingly hewn from the stone
to accommodate the resident dragons and those they call bonded.
Natural springs bubble in caves in the mountain; serving as the
Bathing Cavern of the Weyr. A fine lake is situated at the
center of the mountain's bowl, with the herdbeast pens a small
distance away. Along the edge of the Weyrbowl, the air is still
thick with the smell of freshly disturbed dirt, where dens for
the resident whers and the whers' handlers have been set up. The
Fireheights loom over the Weyr, providing sight over the
entirety of Westwind...and everything beyond. Much of the
Continent has yet to be explored, and many mysteries lurk beyond
Westwind's boundaries.
Candidates of Westwind find that policies are different here
than those of other Weyrs. The age limit for Candidacy has been
raised! Where other Weyrs allow Candidates to Stand from ages
15-25 Turns, Westwind Candidates may Stand from ages 15-30
Turns. Another difference from Northern Weyrs is Westwind's
initiative to include whers as a true part of the Weyr, starting
specific lessons for wherhandling. Wher-Candidates may Stand
starting at age 17 and may continue to Stand indefinitely, so
long as they are in good physical condition to do so.
Candidates are taught the following:
[li]Reading, Writing, and Mathematics (as needed)[/li]
[li]All About Dragons/Whers[/li]
[li]Colors; Stereotypes, Pros and Cons, etc.[/li]
[li]Care of Dragons/Whers[/li]
[li]Hatching Expectations and Conduct[/li]
[li]Basic Dragonhealing/Wherhealing[/li]
[li]Aging-Out[/li]
[li]Weyrlinghood/Wherlinghood[/li]
[li]Sewing; Robes[/li]
[li]Leatherworking; Straps and Harnesses[/li]
[li]Threadfall Procedure[/li]
[li]Outdoor Survival[/li]
[li]Physical Training[/li]
[li]Self-Defense[/li]
[li]Basic Flight[/li]
[li]Basic First-Aid[/li]
[li]And much more![/li]
In addition to these standard lessons provided Candidates,
Westwind Candidates have an extra opportunity that most
Candidates do not. Crafters in residence offer lessons to those
who have prior Apprenticeships who wish to continue training, as
well as introductory lessons to those who do not have experience
in a Craft prior to Candidacy but would like to take a Craft.
Note that Candidacy is a phenomenal endeavor for each Candidate,
and few Apprentice Candidates will find time to attain
Journeyman level before they achieve Impression. This allows a
Candidate the option of pursuing this Craft, in the event they
age out.
