Crafts and Crafters

A chair carved of exquisite redwood. Scrolls of crisp parchment.
Casks of fine wine, fit for a Lord. Who makes the objects and
tools seen across Pern, those both common and rare? Many of
these fine works came from the hands of a Crafter. Standing
completely apart from Weyr and Hold, the Crafts pursue the
continued garnering of knowledge and experience, as well as
produce goods for Hold and Weyr. Crafters are responsible for a
variety of different tasks, but the foremost of a Crafter's
duties include:

[li]practicing Crafts for the benefit of Pern[/li]
[li]training the next generation of Crafters[/li]

The Crafts are numerous, spread wide across Pern, and each
covers a unique branch of knowledge. Yet crafts that are common
knowledge and a part of everyday life - such as simple pottery
or cooking - are not pursued as a true Craft. Each Craft has a
Crafthall, located within one of the Major or Minor Holds, and
it is here many - but not all - Crafters are trained. Each Craft
and Crafthall adheres to a common structure of organization and
rank.
Apprentices
Everyone must start somewhere, and for those in the Crafts, that
starting place is the rank of Apprentice. Apprentices start as
early as 8 Turns of age and as late as 12, though some
Crafthalls accept Apprentices as old as 14 Turns. Those who seek
to Apprentice as a Smith may begin training at an older age than
Apprentices of other Crafts, due to the strength and size needed
to pursue the Smithcraft. As a result, Apprentice Smiths rarely
graduate before 20. In general, graduation occurs starting at 18
Turns, though Apprentice Healers never graduate before 22 for
the reason that maturity must be ensured before an Apprentice is
loosed to practice as a Journeyman.
A trait is not required to make a character that has an
Apprenticeship in a Craft, regardless of other occupations, such
as Candidacy.
Journeymen/Journeywomen
Upon graduation from Apprenticeship, a young Crafter finds
themselves at the next rank: Journeyman. At this stage, they
have learned all they need to practice the Craft to which
they've devoted themselves. Should they wish to proceed to the
rank of Master, they must continue to receive tutelage from a
Master. Few ever advance beyond Journeyman rank, and most settle
to practice the Craft or walk the tables and assist in the
education of the newer Apprentices. While only Masters may
formally educate Apprentices, but a Journeyman is allowed to
offer advice or minor aid. Others are formally posted on
assignments to various Holds, to serve the resident Holder in
the Craft they know. Some Journeymen even travel away from the
Crafthall they received their training, journeying to other
regions of Pern to teach Apprentices the Craft and practice the
Craft themselves.
A minor trait is required to make a character that has an
Journeyman rank in a Craft, regardless of other occupations,
such as Candidacy.
Masters
Those who have reached the rank of Master have attained all the
knowledge the Craft they chose has to offer. "[A Master] has the
ability and responsibility to pass on his or her expertise
within the Craft to the Apprentices, Journeymen and
Journeywomen." (Pern Wiki
HTML https://pern.fandom.com/wiki/Crafts)
Masters are rare in a world
where most are content to practice as Journeymen, but to be a
Master is a most illustrious position indeed. Only the best
pursue the long and often arduous process of completing the
studies needed to be a Master, but those that do are considered
valuable contributions to both Craft and Pern. It is to Masters
that the most guarded Craft secrets are passed, so as to
continue to preserve precious knowledge from ancient times.
A trait is not required to make a character that has Mastery in
a Craft, but adequate description of the character's journey to
attaining the rank is required. In addition, a Master Crafter
cannot be a Candidate/dragonrider/wherhandler/etc.
Craftmaster
A Craftmaster is the sole leader of a single Craft, and it falls
to them to make crucial decisions for the direction of the Craft
under their charge. A Craftmaster is selected from those of
Master rank within the Craft, and replaced by another
Craftmaster in elections held on a biannual basis. Craftmasters
hold great respect wherever they go, and any advice they impart
is always valued. Craftmasters are trusted to speak on behalf of
all Crafters in their Craft, and many in dispute go to them to
mediate. A Craftmaster typically keeps residence in whatever
Hold that the Crafthall is placed, though it in not uncommon for
a Craftmaster to travel to other Holds or Weyrs, for business or
leisure.
