       A Startling Surprise {Open}
By: BatDoesStuff Date: October 11, 2022, 10:35 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Aylee was down by the lake with Aylesk curled up in her lap,
nuzzling close and enjoying a few pets along the top of her
head. She might have decided to let her feet soak in the water,
but it was much too cold now that winter was quickly approaching
and she came to think anyways. Even in the dark of night, the
pink hide of her bonded was as plain as day and still brought
feelings of shock. Sanguine was the name of her color
apparently. Never had they heard of such color and it made them
worried about the future in return. How large would Aylesk grow?
If she ever clutched or even could clutch, would there be more
of her color type? Or was it a once-in-a-blue-moon type chance?
"Aylee... A-alright? Look upset?" A voice spoke to her,
concerned and a bit wobbly. It sounded as though to Aylesk the
idea of her handler being sad was the worst thing to happen.
Aylee still had to even get used to such an affectionate
creature. They were not the most cuddly person before this and
admittedly it was a bit strange to have someone that needed to
       be shown love this much.
"I'm alright. Just thinking. Did you want to get up?" She asked,
shifting her hold on the wherlet to be softer. Apparently, that
was indeed the case as Aylesk soon enough made her way out of
her handler's arms, mood happy and bubbly again.
"Well, if Aylee alright, Aylesk wanna explore! Night so pretty,
love the water. Too cold, but pretty." The sanguine spoke, voice
sweet as sugar while she waited for permission. Truth be told
Aylee didn't know a reason she'd say no, but she was glad she
didn't need to struggle to have the wherlet listen.
"Go ahead, Aylesk. That's fine." She murmured, watching as her
bonded immediately started to run around in the area near them.
Tumbling from time to time as she investigated everything and
anything, Aylee let her thoughts trail off once more. They
trusted that Aylesk wouldn't go far due to just how shy and
       affectionate she was.
Only a few minutes had passed when a whimpering Aylesk was
running right back to them at top speed. The pink wherlet
instantly hid behind her, tucking a face into one of Aylee's
sides in a shaky manner. Aylee was confused by such a sudden
shift in behavior. Of course, she tried to soothe her a little
with some pets, but it was more important to figure out what
       prompted that intense reaction.
A quick look around provided the answer; someone had reasonably
spotted the pair and was now approaching them. Aylesk was
terrified of strangers as Aylee discovered and while it chased
off some, others were too intrigued to just leave. Apparently
this person in particular was a part of the latter group.
Hopefully, they'd at least be pleasant as Aylee didn't know if
they could deal with anything else.

Jamie had been wandering around with Amisk, seeing as how the
bubbly, energetic little wherlet couldn't seem to settle down in
the slightest. Already, the little bronze was zipping around,
chasing every little thing that moved, every shadow. Barking
noises, much like those that she'd emitted when she hatched,
       filled the air.
Upon spotting Aylee and Aylesk, however, Jamie paused. She knew
that both of them were rather timid and opposed to much social
interactions, but she also knew that if she was careful enough
with her approach, then maybe she and her wherlet would be
       permitted to stay.
"I'm sorry to startle you! Amisk needed some exercise. She's
much too hyperactive to keep her in her den for very long! I was
just letting her get in a good little runaround while I enjoyed
some fresh air. You don't mind, do you...?" She asked quietly.
Meanwhile, Amisk scrambled forward, not seeming to notice that
she was scaring Aylesk until just a second too late. Thankfully,
though she still wagged her tail with excitement, she backed off
       a pace or two.
Amisk say hi! Hi Aylesk! Happy to see! The bronze chortled,
hopping in place. Not mean scare! Amisk just happy! Sorry
       scare... Aylesk forgive...?

Ah, it was Jamie. Aylee didn't know her all that well and had
been so shocked at the hatching that she hadn't really paid
attention when she bonded, though she heard about it after. A
female bronze with a personality so large that she was grateful
for Aylesk's quiet nature. Sure, her odd color made her stand
out any day, but even when hyper she never made much noise.
"It's fine, I don't mind. Aylesk just doesn't like strangers, so
I should have expected something like this might happen..." She
explained in that airy sort of tone her voice always seemed to
have. It was an easy excuse to play dumb as she looked between
the wherlets. Amisk thankfully backed off, though getting Aylesk
to come back out and socialize would be a problem of its own.
"It's alright. You don't gotta worry." She whispered softly to
her bonded. Maybe it'd help coax her out and to go make friends
with someone, but she was deciding to be surprisingly stubborn
and only shifted a fraction of an inch. It meant the wherlet
could at least watch, gaze looking between her clutchmate and
Jamie despite remaining entirely silent otherwise.
Aylee let out a sigh and continued to pet her gently as she
turned her attention back over to the others. "Don't be offended
by her being so quiet, she needs a while to warm up... Amisk I
suppose doesn't by the sounds of it. Very... social, that one."
The weyrling decided to say as her gaze moved to get a look at
the bronze wherlet. A cute one, definitely, she could appreciate
the butterfly details with how much she liked those, but she
understood why Aylesk had come back in such a fearful state.

Amisk sorry scare... leave be now... Amisk whimpered again in
spite of the reassurance, retreating back to her handler's side
and lying down dejectedly. It seemed that, for the moment, her
cheerfulness and happy energy had faded. Jamie frowned and knelt
       down, patting her head.
"She didn't say that, tender heart. Maybe if you try approaching
her a bit more slowly, you'll get somewhere. Give it a try.
       Slow."
The bronze wherlet looked up at her partner, then over at
Aylesk. With as much care as she possessed in her otherwise
hyperactive body, Amisk rose up slowly and trotted forward just
       a few tiny steps.
Amisk say hi... Aylesk no need scare. Amisk sorry scare, just
happy see. Aylesk happy see Amisk? Not see since hatch... want
Aylesk be Amisk friend, and Aylee be Jamie friend. Yes? Please?
"There you go, that's much better." Jamie praised, looking back
       over at Aylee.
"She's just eager to make friends, is all. I know Aylesk is
timid, but... maybe she and my Amisk would be good for each
other. Calm and outgoing combined. A good balance, don't you
       think?"

Aylee pressed a hand against the sanguine's cheek and gave a few
scratches in hopes of comforting her some more and helping her
calm down. Her gaze shifted when Amisk moved a bit towards the
pink wherlet once more, albeit much slower and with a calmer
tone which she hoped would work.
Aylesk still seemed still for a moment longer, looking
conflicted about what to do before she carefully stepped out
more into the open. Nervous and shifting from foot to foot, she
finally spoke in her usual quiet voice. "Hi... Aylesk... forgive
Amisk. C-can be friends if Amisk want... Me don't mind." The
words came out a bit uncertain and it didn't help that she kept
looking at Aylee as if checking she was saying the right thing.
The weyrling had found out physical affection seemed to do the
best with assuring her in a subtle manner, so they moved to
scratch under the sanguine's chin to comfort her.
Truthfully Aylee was not really one for making friends. For her,
it was usually a pain to keep on her mask of something more
ditzy and unaware. At the same time however, she knew Aylesk
couldn't keep being this terrified anytime someone comes around.
It'd be a huge problem as an adult and the handler couldn't risk
       that at the same time.
"I'm sure it would help a bit... I can't be the only one she
likes..." Aylee agreed finally, ignoring the slight huff Aylesk
gave in response to that statement. Apparently, the pink wherlet
didn't at all agree with her statement, but she wouldn't expect
       anything less from the sweetheart.

"Then that settles it. Don't worry, Aylee. I get that you're not
really the type to go looking for friends... but... sometimes,
what you need, comes looking for you. At least, from what I've
seen." Jamie offered the lass a smile, which only seemed to
brighten as Amisk seemed very pleased to have made a friend.
Amisk say thank. Not want scare, just want be friends. Want help
Aylesk make friends. Aylesk let Amisk help? Promise be slow.
Work on Aylesk terms. Consider? The wherlet warbled, a bit of
lively energy creeping back into her voice, though she was
careful not to get carried away. Seeing this, her handler gave
her an affectionate pat, a smile appearing on her own face.
"Good job, girlie. Now I think Aylesk should have some space. Go
on, I know you're itching to explore. Be careful, though, ya
hear? Don't wander off." Jamie praised her partner, watching as
she darted off to explore. With the hyperactive wherlet now
distracted, the lass sat down where Amisk had been, greeting the
more timid sanguine with a calm little smile before speaking in
a voice as soft as a breeze.
"Hi there, Aylesk. Thanks for agreeing to be friends. I know
Amisk can be a bit..but... hyperactive... but I'm sure she's
only got good intentions. You don't have to worry about me
getting all hyped up, I'm not going to. Does this make you feel
       any better?"

Aylee was skeptical of those words but did her best to not
outwardly show that by instead offering a small smile to Jamie.
"I suppose so. I can't think of anything to argue against that."
She stated, shrugging a little though honestly, it wasn't really
a complaint. The weyrling was tired enough when thinking about
her future as a wherhandler, adding in any more factors like
their social life might cause a migraine to form.
Aylesk didn't seem to mind Amisk's words as the bronze again
assured that she just wanted to help, which the sanguine did
seem to like despite the outward hesitance in her behavior. She
was shy and afraid of strangers, yes, but with how loving she
was Aylee was certain that they'd like having friends to play
with. It'd be someone else to hear her dramatic side and see how
hyper she can be in the right setting.
".. Yes. Aylesk consider..." The wherlet muttered which made her
handler smile a bit in return and mutter their own soft 'Good
job, sweetie.' The surprise came however when Jamie decided to
try and softly speak to Aylesk, though Aylee didn't at all stop
her from doing so. They were interested in seeing how their
bonded responded to it if nothing else.
At first, the sanguine didn't say anything at all, squishing
back from where she was to watch Jamie in a wide-eyed expression
as though she had been caught off guard as well. Aylee almost
dared to speak up for her and explain things once again if it
wasn't for the fact she surprisingly decided to speak up for
herself. Quiet as always and if it were not so quiet out she
might not have been heard, but Aylee was proud nonetheless that
       she actually spoke.
"... Aylesk... just not expect Amisk. Nor Jamie. Did not mean to
be startled... just happen..." Aylesk muttered, flattening
herself against Aylee's side as she gave a small huff. She
seemed to feel a bit upset that she was spooked, but a soft kiss
on her forehead and a gentle pet along her back assured her that
nothing was wrong and that they would work on it.

"It's okay, Aylesk. You have every right to be spooked. I
promise, I'll work with Amisk on her... overenthusiasm." Jamie
smiled gently, sitting back and staring at the sky for a moment.
"You know something? I'm not so different from you, Aylesk. I
don't do the best around lots of people, either. I might seem
energetic and cheerful, but... the truth is, I have a lot of
dark days. Days where I just... I cry. And I hide. But it always
helps if you have those friends who just... they just exist with
you, you know? You can be completely quiet in their company, and
you still feel as though you've conquered the world. True
friends, are friends that you don't have to talk to every day.
You can just... do nothing together. You can just be there, in
the moment with them, and feel... complete. You know?"

Aylee was semi-listening as Jamie continued to speak to the
Sanguine, probably doing a better job than they could of
teaching someone. Granted she didn't know how much the little
wherlet would learn, but Aylee was never good with her words and
she additionally wasn't social. Not even the other's words
really... related much to her or not to her experiences anyways.
Their friends consisted of her family and now Aylesk. Anyone
else in her opinion would have too much risk to trust, not fully
anyways. The ditzy and daydreamer front existed for a reason.
The wherlet meanwhile, oblivious of her current handler's
wondering thoughts, seemed to be listening quite intently though
she didn't seem to know how much was the truth of the matter.
Aylesk didn't know her well and even if she seemed kind, she
only fully put her trust in her handler at this point. While she
didn't speak because of this, Aylee was surprised to feel the
young wherlet pull away from her and very hesitantly walk a foot
or so away to be standing more in the open. She didn't go
towards Jamie and seemed to try to keep the same distance
between them, yet Aylee knew it was still a big deal.
"Good girl, Aylesk. Not so scary, huh?" The weyrling murmured
softly, gently brushing her cheek with the back of their hand
before moving it away to hopefully let her get used to not being
so close. Aylee didn't mind the clinginess as much as she
thought she would, but she also was still grateful to have her
own space sometimes given she was so used to doing things by
       herself.

"Well. Isn't that something? You're doing a good job, Aylesk.
I'm sure Aylee is very proud of you." Jamie smiled, respectfully
sitting back as though to make the Sanguine more comfortable.
She turned her attention to the open expanse of sky, frowning
slightly as if deep in thought.
Amidst her handler's mind wandering, Amisk returned from her
romp around the area, seemingly a bit more tuckered out. She
still had energy, but needed to catch her breath first. The
young handler glanced down as her partner flopped down beside
her, her head thumping into her lap and her sides heaving.
Amisk... have fun... The bronze wherlet panted much like a dog
would, her maw hanging open and her tongue flopping out. Jamie
laughed softly, patting her flat head.
"Catch your breath, girlie. I know for a fact, you just gotta
catch your second wind. You really need a friend to keep up with
you, but where in all of Pern are we gonna find something like
       that? Your energy is limitless!"
