A Quiet Morning [OPEN] [A'ton]
By: GonGold Date: October 8, 2022, 12:57 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
A'ton's eyes were slow to open that morning. But they did, as
they always would, until his final hour of life.
The young bronzerider sat up, a silent yawn slithering past his
lips as he stretched, rather lazily, and looked around. Sleep
was the one instance in which he allowed himself the comforts of
laziness. Otherwise, A'ton was one of the most active men that
you could ever meet, in spite of his deafness. Thankfully, the
handsome young rider had both his bonded bronze, Zerrinth, and
his green Firelizard Emerald to help him navigate the world.
Speaking of his dear bronze partner, A'ton could feel his
consciousness within his own. He was awake. Good morning to you
too, big guy. Is Emerald with you? She's not here.
Yes, she is here. Will you be alright to navigate without her?
I... I should be, yes. I'm deaf, not blind. A'ton laughed across
the link. I'll come get her later.
Perhaps, but communication can be difficult. I am sending her to
you at any rate.
Well... thank you, Zerry. You're too good to me. I'll be on a
walkabout, she can come find me.
A'ton left his room after getting dressed, heading outside
amidst a slight chill in the air. He looked up at the few wispy
clouds that dotted the blue skies, smiling to himself as the sun
washed down on his face. His eyes were closed as a muted sigh of
content left his lips.
As he began walking, he waved to a few of the Weyrfolk as he
passed, grateful that most of them knew how to communicate
through simple Pernese sign language. A few pleasant signs were
exchanged as he walked along, headed in no particular direction.
He was eventually joined by Emerald, who perched herself atop
his shoulders with a purr. He felt the vibrations course through
her smaller body, with feelings of content and delight radiating
from her at being reunited with him, despite only being apart
for a few hours at the most.
As he walked, he caught sight of what may have been a familiar
face. Deciding that he could use some company that morning, he
headed off after them. With Emerald present, he could 'hear' the
world around him, through her.
"Wait up!"

Cora turned hearing the voice call out. She’d awoken that
morning unusually early, and, feeling properly refreshed for
once, she had decided to take full advantage of the day. A quick
swing by the kitchens had snagged her a fresh crisp apple which
she was now carving small slices from with her pocketknife as
she ambled across the Weyr.
As she placed a slice in her mouth she heard A’ton call out.
Quickly chewing and swallowing she turned around and waved.
“Hullo there A’ton!” She flashed a kind smile and signed
awkwardly, just in case Emerald missed a word or two. “Enjoying
the morning?”

"Oh-! Good morning, Cora!" A'ton returned the greeting in kind,
flashing Cora a gentle smile. Thankfully, despite his lack of
hearing, A'ton was able to make out her hasty sign, as well as
'sense' what she said, thanks to Emerald. "Yes, I'm enjoying a
little walk before I take Zerrinth out for a few drills. The
morning is too beautiful to resist enjoying, even for... well,
someone such as myself."
A'ton flinched slightly, his ear being nipped by a cross
Emerald. He knew better than to talk about himself as though he
were less human than the people around him! He could feel her
displeasure at his words, almost as though he could hear it in
spite of everything. There was even a mental growl of
disappointment from his bonded, to which the man laughed
sheepishly. "Ahah... perhaps I shouldn't have said that. Neither
of my dear partners can stand it when I speak so poorly of
myself for what I lack. But I cannot just... ignore it. I've
often dreamt of hearing the voices of my friends, but... ah,
never mind. Do you have anywhere you need to be this morning?
Would you mind keeping me company for a minute? If you're busy,
I can let you get to where you're needed."

Cora wiped a bit of apple off her mouth with the back of her
hand. “I think it’s important to remember that it’s not what you
lack that defines you. But instead what you can accomplish.”
She contemplated the remainder of the apple for a moment. “At
least, that’s what I like to think! But I do believe your
companions there took offense to your self-degradation. You are
very blessed indeed to have such kind dragons.” She frowned.
“Would that Astralath was half as well behaved as little Emerald
there. He’s a handful most of the time. But I wouldn’t trade him
for the world you know?”
She pointed ahead towards the open areas of the Weyrbowl. “I
would enjoy some company today so of course please join me! I
was just enjoying a morning stroll. Not something I tend to do
if I’m being honest.” She chuckled to herself.

A'ton smiled warmly. "Yes, indeed, I'm very blessed indeed. I
wouldn't trade either of them for the world, not even for the
ability to properly hear again... though..." And here, he seemed
to pause, as though mulling over some heavy burden or other.
"Can I be honest with you for a moment, Cora?" The bronzerider
asked, his normally cheery voice suddenly softening, turning...
hesitant. As though he were carrying some heavy burden, and
being near tears beneath its weight. "I... I need someone to
talk to about this, and as much as I love my partners, they
already know my troubles, and they help as best as they can.
But... even they can only do so much to ease this particular
worry of mine."
A'ton swallowed tightly. "I find myself rather lonely. Yes, I
have my dragon and my flit. And they're wonderful partners! I
wouldn't replace them for anything! But... at the same time, I
want someone who I can share days with, who I can make memories
with, who... who I can relate to. And I'm afraid that being deaf
will get in the way of that. I'm afraid that no one will want to
spend time with someone who can never hear their voice..." He
trailed off, shaking his head firmly and looking rather ashamed
and embarrassed about having spoken such things.
"I'm so sorry, Cora... I should never have dumped that upon you.
See... lately, I've been feeling more lovesick and gloomy. I
think it's because Zerrinth is eagerly awaiting Haloneth's next
flight. He's taken a shine to our Queen, he has, though he's
aware that he may very well not win her favor." He managed a
quiet laugh at that, especially when he felt his partner's
embarrassment at being called out.
"But... some of these worries are my own. I want to find someone
who... who looks past my shortcomings, and loves me for who I
am. For what I do have to offer. But... enough about that, I've
put too much on you. You can just... forget about all of that.
Ehehe..."
