Carmen eagerly followed him to the yellow root, crouching down
in front of it while listening with only half an ear. She gently
touched the leaves and lifted one so she could see the stem, all
while her eyes sparkled with fascination. Just about when Oliver
caught on to her mentioning the serpent's breath she opened her
book and picked up a pen, scribbling down notes on one of the
pages while mumbling to herself in a low voice. When she
finished she glanced at Oliver and upon noticing his excitement
she flinched back a little.
- S-sorry.. I wasn't really paying attention but if you tried
growing it here I'm surprised you got it to grow at all.
Turning back to the yellow root she gently moved one of the
leaves while a soft smile graced her lips, a dreamy look in her
eyes.
- Much like a serpent it loves the heat but too much will burn
it. No more than five hours of natural sunlight a day or it
won't grow. It's also surprisingly fond of the cold and it loves
wet spaces. Humidity is very important for it to thrive. Sadly
I've only been able to reach about a 92% potency on it's poison
yet but I'm still experimenting.
She got a thoughtful look as she took her hand back then picked
up the book, quickly turning the pages.
- Maybe if I harvest it earlier in the day..
She was practically glowing with excitement as she scribbled
down a few notes on a page before suddenly stopping and glancing
at Oliver.
- I'm not boring you, am I? Maybe you know a better way to
purify it? I mean, you probably do, you got the linigell
blooming despite how picky those are so obviously you know more
about this than me seeing as I'm just a first year and all..
Realizing she was babbling she cut herself off by clearing her
throat and getting back up on her feet.
- Sorry, I talk a lot when I'm nervous and you make me veeery
nervous and why did I even say that? It's not like it's useful
information. Might as well go home and eat the entire plant
after this even if it would be such a waste seeing as it's quite
rare but on the other hand poisonous and I shouldn't let just
anyone have it or they might end up dead. I'm sorry! I'm
babbling, I know. I just.. Will you teach me? I know we'll get
to learn in class and all but they move rather slowly and I
dream of being a potion apothecary one day so plants are kind of
important to know, you know?
She trailed off, slowly tucking a long strand of hair behind her
ear while an embarrassed smile lingered on her face.

Oliver listened intently at her explanations, it was very
fascinating to hear about, as she knew way more than anyone else
he had met, but that made it all the more interesting. She also
behaved nothing like Casper, who usually scraped by by the skin
of his teeth, at least in the book heavy classes.
Her description of the growing conditions were nothing new, but
it was still terribly difficult to perfectly replicate its
natural habitat there, especially since Mrs Hobbs was not too
fond of having such a poisonous plant around students. Still, it
would have been nice to be able to study it a bit more closely.
Oliver was preoccupied with his thoughts and almost didn't
register what she had said. 92%! He couldn't help but stare at
her in awe. How had she managed that?
He plucked a few smaller leaves that were starting to overcrowd
the yellow root in an attempt to keep his mind from melting
through the floor in embarrassment.
-I'm.. I'm sorry, but I can't help you there. I've only able to
reach 60 % potency with the ones I've grown here. There's
something I'm doing wrong, but I haven't been able to experiment
enough to find out.
He felt a bit sad and embarrassed, his shoulders slumping along
with his confidence.
-I'm better at handling the plants while they are still growing.
I know what most plants are useful for, in theory, but that
doesn't always help in practice...

Carmen blinked in surprise, her mouth forming a silent "O". For
a moment she seemed at a loss for what to do then her eyes
trailed back to his hands removing some of the leaves.
- Why're you doing that?
She had managed to grow most things but sadly not too many
survived for very long as her home was too cold and damp for
most exotic species. She knew how to grow yellow root but hers
had always withered after reaching a certain stage and no amount
of digging through Casper's old books could help her make it
bloom fully. Then again she had never trimmed the leaves as
there had been no indications anywhere that it was necessary.
And if it really was necessary then how did he know which leaves
to actually pluck? Just to make sur her memory didn't decieve
her she opened the book and found the page on yellow root,
quickly scanning over it before turning it towards Oliver with
an irritated pout.
- It doesn't say that you should prune it anywhere.

Oliver perked back up when she asked about the leaves. This was
something he could actually help her with.
-Well, technically, you don't have to do that, but it will
struggle quite a lot if it gets too crowded and not yield as
many flowers.
He lifted some of the bigger leaves to show the clusters of baby
leaves further down the stem.
-Most plants produce lots of extra leaves like these, since in
the wild the chance of something happening to them is very
likely. Animals, insects, fungi, or humans, are all likely to
harm or eat some of its leaves, and if you have no spares, you
are doomed.
He plucked some of the small leaves and put them with the rest
in a small basket nearby.
-But here, it is unnecessary, and will only sap it of energy.
Each small leaf takes energy that could have been spent on a
flower instead.
He let go of the yellow root and smiled at her.
-This is true for most plants. You are simply replicating
nature, but in a more controlled way to make sure that they
thrive and yield a better quality harvest. The books are good,
but they won't give you the information on how to take the best
care of them.
He felt great about being able to help her.

Carmen listened intently but when Oliver finished speaking she
sighed and rolled her eyes, slamming her book shut.
- Perfect. Always happy to hear my studies are wasted.
Still grumbling she opened the book again and scribbled down a
couple notes on a page before tapping her lips with the pen, a
thoughtful expression on her face.
- Bet the library have better books here..Do students get to
keep plants in their own rooms? I'd ask my brother but he
wouldn't know. I'd li-
- CARMEN!
The sudden shout made her jump and throw her book again. It
landed with a loud thump a few steps from Casper's feet and he
picked it up with an irritated look.
- Stop throwing books around!
- Stop scaring me then!
Casper snorted and held the book out to her before giving Oliver
a curious look.
- Hi. Mind if I borrow her a little bit..uh..sorry, I'm really
bad with names.
He gave Oliver an apologetic smile while Carmen rolled her eyes
again, the book tightly pressed to her chest.
