Carmen stopped and turned to stare dumbfounded at his hand.
After staring at it quietly for a few seconds she looked around,
scanning the surrounding area. She even went as far as stepping
slightly to the side and looking behind Oliver before frowning
and giving him an uncertain look.
       - Riiight..
She pressed her book firmly to her chest while giving him
another once over, not even bothering to be discreet about it.
She came to the same conclusion she had the first time.
       - He's way too hot to just be heeaaah..uuh..
She cut herself off when she realized what she was saying, her
entire face turning red while she looked down at the ground, an
expression of utter disbelief on her face.
       - Did I just say that out loud?

Oliver kept his hand raised and his eyes followed the girl's
movements. A smile was tugging at his lips at her clear distrust
of him but his smile dropped and his face turned bright red in
an instant at her comment. How could she say that! He had the
       face of a potato!
       -Y-yes... You did..
What else was he supposed to say to her?!

Carmen's shoulders dropped as she hung her head down.
       - I see..
Her voice sounded so shaky and weird. Had she perhaps always
sounded weird and she simply wasn't aware of it before now? Not
that any of that mattered. She had managed to make a fool of
herself on the first official day. Feeling defeated she slowly
raised her head a bit, giving him a careful, pleading look.
       - Please don't tell my brother..

Oh no he made her cry.
       -Hey... Heyheyhey.. Please don't cry.
He took a step forward and reached his hand out, but stopped
when she flinched back. He slowly pulled his hand back, still
       blushing heavily.
       -I shouldn't have said that I... I'm sorry... I didn’t mean to
       upset you. Are you alright?
He could have swallowed his own shoes at his own stupidity. Of
course she wasn’t alright, he had upset her not even two seconds
ago! Had he suddenly lost his eyes, and common sense as well?
       -I..
       Idiot, shut up!
Her plea surprised him. He had no friends from the house of
Slytherin. He tilted his head to the side.
-Why would I tell your brother?

Carmen blinked in confusion, her eyes darting down to the
necktie, clearly showing the Hufflepuff colours.
       - Y-you're a Hufflepuff..
Her curiosity was starting to overpower the shame as she tried
her best not to blurt out any more stupid things.
       - I'm Casper Blackwater's little sister. I figured you probably
know him since he's in Hufflepuff too. Not that he remembers
people's names very well. In fact he's really bad at it. I'm not
though. Bad at remembering names I mean.
She lifted the book a little higher so she could hide her mouth
behind it, hoping that it could somehow keep her from babbling
on. Perhaps the cutie was right and he really wasn't pulling a
prank on her. After all, wouldn't a bunch of people have jumped
out to laugh at her then already?

       -Oh..
He hadn't realised that that girl was the one that Casper had
referred to when he had told them about his sister. He had heard
him exchange words with someone, but the heap of Hufflepuff
seniors had prevented him from getting more than a quick glance
       at her.
He scratched the back of his head, unsure how to tell her that
he didn't really have any friends. He felt a bit embarrassed, he
did definitely did not fit the Hufflepuff stereotype of being
       friends with anyone and everyone.
-Casper and I.. Aren't friends... We have some classes together
and he sometimes asks to copy my herbology homework but.. That's
       about it...

-Oh? I thought Casper was friends with everyone. At least that's
what he makes it sound like.
She hesitated then lowered the book again, deciding that she
might actually give the guy a chance. No one had jumped out from
anywhere and now that she looked closer she even noticed a dirt
stain on his cheek. Tearing her eyes away from him to avoid
getting her legs turned to jelly she looked at the patch he'd
been working on before she interrupted him.
       - It'll be ready to harvest soon. In about a week I'd say.
She dared a quick sideglance to gauge his reaction. If he really
was there for the plants he'd know which plant she spoke off and
he'd correct her to say it would be two weeks, not one.

-He is friendly, don't get me wrong, but we... Have different
hobbies, so to speak? So we don't run into each other that often
       outside of class.
Oliver's eyes fell on the plant that she was referring to and
       studied it.
-I'd say closer to two weeks. You can easily check that by
looking at the leaves. Right now they are a colourful green, but
they should darken to almost black or purple when they are
ready. You can see it has started to change a bit closer to the
stem, and the "tail" should start to droop more when they are
       ready to harvest.
As he spoke, he pointed at the different parts to clarify what
he was talking about. Plants were very easy to understand, once
one learnt their language that was, and they were quite obvious
in what they meant when one knew what signs to look for.
-But this one over there is almost ready.
He pointed towards the Yellow root a bit further away. It stood
out with its vibrantly yellow leaves and large red flowers that
grew in groups of two or three.
       -I can sho-...
He was about to say something else but hesitated. Just because
he got all sparkly eyed when it came to plants, it didn't mean
other people were the same, stupid.
-Oh.. but I'm sure you have something more important to do than
to look at flowers... I-it's okay, you don't have to stay...

Carmen had no idea how to react to Oliver's excitement. She
shared it but had never really met anyone with the same interest
and wasn't sure how she should behave around him due to that. A
smile appeared as she watched his hand softly move around the
plant to point out what he was referring to. She almost forgot
to pay attention to what he said simply because he was so
mesmerizing to watch. Her cheeks were still burning too but she
would be damned if she let herself miss out on getting a friend
when the possibility presented itself for what she felt like was
the first time. Another giggled escaped her and she quickly
cleared her throat to try and get the stupid giggling under
control before motioning towards the yellow root.
       - It's too cold to grow yellow root where I live and my
serpent's breath takes up the entire greenhouse so I'd actually
love to take a closer look at it if that's alright with you?
She let the book drop, hiding it behind her back so he wouldn't
see how hard she was grasping it to keep her hands from shaking.
Making an actual friend was a lot more nervwrecking than she had
initially thought but she assumed that wasn't why she was so
       nervous.

She... Wanted to see more plants? For real? This wasn't a joke?
Oliver was stunned into silence for a few seconds before giving
her a big smile. He felt his pulse quickening and he scrambled
       to collect himself.
-Of course! Th-this way! Yeah, yeah, Yellow root is surprisingly
sensitive to cold so I'm surprised it has grown so well here.
Mrs. Hobbs, the herbology teacher, said she might bring in some
new plants this year if the Yellow root would thrive, since it
is such a tricky plant to cultivate. She also-
He stopped dead in his tracks and turned towards her. He was
ready to burst with excitement when he actually registered what
       she had said.
-You've got Serpent's breath to thrive? How did you do that?
I've tried a few different soils and fertilizers but none have
really been a perfect fit, they always look like a smaller
version of the real thing. Have you managed to distill its
poison as well? How potent? I've tried a few times but none
       have really-
He realized he had been chattering away without giving her a
chance to even respond. He looked down towards the ground while
a heavy blush spread across his face.
       -I-I'm sorry... I talk too much, don't I? It's.. um... I...
really like plants and... I haven't really met anyone else that
has shared that interest. I'm sorry.
