Mysteries of Geldeworth
By: Mirenderim Date: May 29, 2023, 8:10 am
---------------------------------------------------------
The halls of Geldeworth castle was currently empty but wouldn't
be for long. Soon it would be filled with students from all over
the world, both eager and less so to learn magic. Casper had
arrived a week before the official school start with his sister
as their father had to go back to the dragon breeding farm he
was currently emploied at and wouldn't be able to get them to
school otherwise. Having already been there for a week Casper
was more than a little bored and practicaly jumped up in
excitement when the bell rang, calling all students that were
starting to arrive to the courtyard. He looked down at his siter
who was sitting with her nose stuck in a book as usual and
sighed dramatically.
- Come on, Carmen! Didn't you hear the bell.
Carmen continued reading for a moment then carefully shut the
book and gave him an annoyed look. As she stood and brushed off
the midthigh black skirt and corrected the over knee high socks
that were a part of the school uniform she muttered to her
brother.
- I can take care of myself. Just run ahead to greet your
friends.
Casper pouted a little but didn't leave her side as she made
sure the white shirt was properly buttoned then they both headed
down to the courtyard. As the acceptance letters had already
told them which home they would be placed in Casper watched his
sister's back as she joined the other newcommers in Slytherin
while he went over to his own home, Hufflepuff, jumping up on
one of his friends back with a grin.
- Took you idiots long enough to get here. I've been bored!

Oliver sidestepped to avoid being run over by a group of first
year students who eagerly hurried off towards the courtyard. He
frowned, seeing no need to rush as they wouldn't start the
welcome ceremony until everyone was gathered anyway, but he
could understand them. He had also been eager to start his first
year at Geldeworth when he first laid eyes on the castle, but
now he was more interested in getting back to the castle
gardens. He hoped that the Dragon's breath and the Yellow root
that he had planted last semester had been doing well over the
summer, and Mrs Hobbs had hinted at bringing in some new exotic
plants for this year. It had been nice to be back home with his
mother, but the anticipation had been gnawing at him all summer.
He could see both new and familiar faces in the crowd. Like
Casper, one of his classmates. He was friendly enough but they
had only spoken briefly during class or when sharing homework.
Dorothy glared at a rat haired girl who accidentally bumped into
her when making her way over to some friends. She had been in a
bad mood ever since she set foot on the train to Geldeworth.
Even the first class cabin had been nothing more than a thin
cushion rawaged by moths and she was glad she had worn a cloak
ontop of the school uniform, since the train had been freezing
and standing outside in the shadow of the castle tower did not
help one bit despite the warm summer breeze.
The trip there was not the only thing souring her mood. She had
been sorted into Slytherin, which made her parents overjoyed,
but she felt miserable. Those sorted into Slytherin were known
to be ambitious and high achievers, and her parents would expect
no less from her. Good grades, a good match, a good wife. She
felt like throwing up on the spot.

It didn't take long for the arriving students to get to their
respective homes and as soon as they were sorted the headmaster
appeared, welcoming them all to yet another magical year at
Geldeworth. He talked a bit about safety rules and what to
expect then warned them all to be on their best behaviour.
- Especially you Casper Blackwater! I have my eyes on you!
Casper gave the headmaster a big grin whilst some of the
students who knew about his antics giggled. The headmaster
settled on giving him a stern look then returned to give the new
first years a warm smile, welcoming them to Geldeworth yet
again. After his speech he led them inside to a grand hall where
the house heads and their prefects helped all first years find a
good seat by their house table so the welcome brunch could
commence. The food usually got people talking and generally took
away some nervousness from the new students so they more easily
could make friends. Knowing this Carmen simply picked up her
book on herbology again and continued reading, getting as far
ahead in her studies as she possibly could. After all, every
last one of the first years around her looked like they had been
raised with a silver spoon, especially the pretty blonde on her
right, and Carmen had no interest in becoming friends with
anyone anyway.
Casper was way too busy chitchatting with anyone and everyone to
actually eat much but he still made sure to keep an eye on his
sister and when he found out she was reading again he sighed
heavily, leaning his chin in his hand.
- I swear Carmen's gonna end up alone in a house full of plants.
One of his friends gave him a confused look.
- Who's Carmen?
- My little sister.
- You have a sister?!
Several of the seniors in hufflepuff scrambled to get closer,
one of them pretty much crawling over Oliver so he could hear
better, not even bothering to apologize. They all begged Casper
to introduce them while they looked towards the hufflepuff first
years.
- Which one is she?
Casper chuckled then turned the head of the guy who was pretty
much still sprawled over Oliver so he was looking towards
Slytherin.
- She's the nerd reading about plants.

Dorothy sat down at the table and gave it a once over, sizing up
her competition, chatting briefly with others who seemed to try
and do the same. Some faces she recognised from her previous
school, others were new, like the timid thing to her left with
her nose in a book. Dorothy couldn't help but wonder if she
wouldn't have been a better fit for Rawenclaw or Hufflepuff?
Sitting there, reading? Or maybe she played this game on another
level, to try and unnerve the competition by pretending to not
play? Dorothy smirked, only one way to find out. She put on a
sweet smile, honed to perfection from hours in front of a
mirror, and turned her head to see what the mouse was reading.
"Herbology volume 3: A guide to the advanced study and
cultivation of magical plants in different growing environments"
She recognised it from the lengthy description of properties of
the Common Goblin grass and the faint but unmistakable smell of
bogwater which seemd to haunt most herbology books. Hufflepuff
for sure.
-To bad it's not of much use unless you plan to be covered in
swampmud all the time. Why not go for something... Cleaner?
She gave the mouse a once over and tilted her head, intrigued by
what answers she might get to help place her in the hierarchy.
The great hall always gave Oliver a sence of calm, no matter how
rowdy the crowd got. Like a great oak, with branches that
stretched towards the sky, it welcomed everyone to sit in the
shade, no matter where one came from and eminated a feeling that
he did not find anywhere else. It was usually a calm place where
many liked to study, but the first day of school was always a
day filled with eager students and loud chatter. From Oliver's
perspective, it seemed to center around Casper, even more so
when he mentioned that he had a sister. But it was the plant
part that piqued his interest, not that he had time to linger on
it as all the seniors flocked to Casper in an unorganised heap.
Oliver could feel the well worn fabric of his school uniform
strain as the other students practically climbed over him to get
closer to Casper. He would have to enhance it as soon as he had
the chance or it would fall to pieces soon.
Not that he minded much, it was nice to be surrounded by people,
even if he wasn't really a part of the group. His thoughts went
back to what Casper had said, Casper Blackwater had a sister?
Who was interested in herbology? He was pulling their leg for
sure. He was a prankster, that was the sort of thing he would
say to get everyone talking and guessing.. But it would still be
nice to meet someone else who were interested in plants. He
couldn't really make out who it might be that Casper was
referring to, if it really was his sister that was, but he would
perhaps runin to her in the castle garden later in that case.
The guy sprawled over Oliver huffed.
-You're just full of shit Blackwater! You have no sister! You
just wanna send everyone on a wild goose chase for your own
amusement! A Slytherin? Come on, you can do better than that!

Carmen finished the part she was currently on then closed the
book while letting out a heavy sigh, mumblingt o herself.
- Took longer than I expected..To answer your question I don't
plan to get covered in mud. I simply wish to be prepared for my
first class in herbology.
As she figured that probably would make the girl class her as
some kind of lesser being, if she hadn't already, she picked up
her book again ignoring the whisperes and giggles from the
others closeby who clearly decided she would be the at the
bottom of the pecking order from now on. As per usuasl, she
thought to herself, trying to concentrate on the book again.
Casper burst out laughing when he heard the doubtful snorts and
comments. When they all settled he was grinning mischeavously.
- Fine. I'll prove it then.
Giving them all a playful wink he got up on his chair and looked
towards the slytherin first years.
- Hey, Camcam!
On the other side of the room Carmen groaned and looked up from
her book, giving her brother an irritated glare.
- Tell these idiots I'm your brother!
She let her eyes wander over them all slowly then returned her
focus to the book.
- No thanks.
The guys around the hufflepuff table started laughing, teasingly
saying Casper was a liar until he gave them another playful grin
after getting down from the chair.
- She responded to Camcam, didn't she? Also hands off. She may
be my baby sister but I can assure you she's a serpent. She's
ambitious, cunning, surprisingly resourceful and only cares
about her own goals.
One of the guys looked back at Carmen with a thoughtful look.
- She's still kinda cute though.
- Ew. Oh by the way..
Casper got up and walked around the table towards the Ravenclaw
first years, handing one of them an envelope before returning to
his seat in a calm manner. His firends, sensing mischeaf, kept a
close eye on the boy who got it and almost died laughing when
the envelope suddenly exploded sending glitter all over the
closest students. The teachers weren't as happy about it but
with brunch being pretty much over the house heads and the
prefects gathered their respective first years for the castle
tour and home dormitories. When Slytherin got up and passed the
Hufflepuff table Carmen temporarilys topped and smacked the book
in Caspers head.
- Don't bother me while I'm studying or I'll put serpents breath
in your tea.
Casper rubbed his head while she walked off then gave his
friends a curious look.
- What's serpents breath?
His friends shrugged, just as clueless as he was, completely
unaware that it was a sweet tasting poison strong enough to kill
a dragon with only a single drop if extracted properly.

Dorothy gave the mouse a pouty look that did not quite reach her
eyes.
-I guess you do need the extra study time. You'll only get muddy
if you go looking for it, silly.
She tucked a golden curl behind her ear, trying to appear sorry.
-Milkweed has the same qualities, is more effective and, not to
mention, way easier to find. I was only trying to help, pet.
Some of the girls snickered at Dorothy's remark but the mouse
did not seem to take note. Perhaps she did not play the game
after all.. How boring.
She quickly lost interest and turned towards another girl to
exchange pleasantries and backhanded compliments with.
When everyone left the great hall Oliver could hear some of the
seniors whispering among each other.
-What's serpent's breath?
-Don't look at me, I didn’t even think serpents had breaths.
He himself could also not stop thinking about what the girl had
said. She knew about serpent's breath? To the point of being
able to extract it even?! How pure was she able to make it? He'd
only managed a 50 % effectiveness due to the volitile nature of
the poison. Did she know a better way to stabilise it? She was
only a firstyear! Well he also knew, in theory, but it was not
wise to brew too much of it. Now he really hoped that he would
run into her at some point.
While the first years were given a tour of the school grounds
and their respective dormatories, the older students were free
to roam the grounds as they pleased or relax in the common room
of their dormatorie. Oliver spared no time in hurrying of
towards the garden and the greenhouses where he hoped his plants
where still thriving.

Carmen gave the girl a surprised look. She didn't expect her to
know what serpents breath was as it was from a specialized class
but it certainly peeked her interest. When the girl turned she
reached out and touched her shoulder gently, giving her a
curious look.
- Sorry. I'm not used to being treated..normally. But the reason
I wouldn't use milkweed is because it would color his tea as if
milk had been put in it and my brother wants his clear. He'd
know something was up. I'm Carmen by the way.
She gave the girl a careful smile, hoping she wouldn't choose to
hate her just like the rest.
Casper soon gave up on the serpents breath and decided to go
trow a ball with some of his friends while waiting for the tour
to finish. In the afternoon the first years were left alone to
either go explore or settle in and Carmen didn't spare a second
on grabbing her book to go outside and read. Generally it was
more quiet and she wanted to concentrate. The spot she had been
reading in earlier was now full of chattering students and with
an irritated sigh she decided to go find her brother. The second
she approached he grinned wide, calling out to her while she
told him to knock it off, then proceeded with asking for
somewhere quiet to read.
- Uuh..what about the library?
- No. Outdoors.
Casper thought for a moment then one of his friends suddenly lit
up.
- The greenhouse! Nobody hangs around there.
As Casper didn't even remember where it was his friend had to
show them the way. Carmen was honestly excited when she saw the
greenery and as Casper and his friend left she quickly stepped
into the greenhouse, looking around at all the plants, trying
hard to remember their names and properties.

Dorothy gave the mouse a surprised look. She considered this...
normal? As in.. friendly? She quickly composed herself and gave
her a smile.
-Not with that attitude you won't, pet.
She seemed harmless enough, but was she simply friendly,
desperate, or waiting to stab her in the back at the first
opportunity? Well, it wasn't like she hadn't gotten used to it.
But Dorothy couldn't help but wonder, either she was either very
good at hiding her true intentions or she really was that pure
of heart. It was a bit.. Unnerving... Not being able to easily
read her and her goals.
Dorothy cocked her head to one side and smiled at Carmen's
comment about the tea.
-Not to bad, pet. You are quite clever behind that pretty face
of yours. I'm Dorothy, nice to meet you.
She did not have time to say anything else before the prefects
started hearding them towards the Slytherin dormitory.
The tour of the castle was mostly boring, the only upside was
that their luggage had been moved to their preassigned rooms.
Dorothy didn't know what to think about sharing a room, and with
the mou-... Carmen, of all the girls. It could definitely have
been worse, but she found a lot to be lacking, as the room was
quite cramped and simple by her standards. They would have a
dresser and a desk each, a shared bunkbed and a window, perhaps
some dustbunnies if one looked closely enough. Luckily, the
common room was more spacious, with plenty of comfy sofas and
armchairs scattered around the central fireplace. The enchanted
ceiling was a nice touch, showing the bottom of the lake which
they were located beneath.
After the tour finished Dorothy plopped herself down on one of
the sofas to discuss the issue of the welcome ball. She had lost
sight of Carmen a while ago but had a feeling that the girl
would not be thrilled about attending. It was scheduled for the
upcoming weekend and some of the girls were almost having a
breakdown about it.
Oliver was humming happily to himself while tending to his
Griffin's tails. They had grown almost 1,5 meters tall over the
summer and would soon be ready to harvest. The leaves could be
dried and crushed to be used against headaches, the bushy "tail"
was commonly used as an ingredient in a lot of different
potions, and the root could cause vivid hallucinations if not
prepared properly. A marvelous plant really!
The greenhouse was quiet except for the buzzing of some bees and
he was fully absorbed in his work. He had vague memory about
hearing a door opening a little while ago but hadn't heard
anything else so he figured it must have been the wind.
Therefore, when he turned around, he was about to jump out of
his own skin when he noticed the girl standing not too far away.
A loud yelp escaped him which only made him panic more.
-I-I-I'm sorry! Yo-you startled me, I didn't hear you!
His cheeks turned read and he wasn't sure of what to do now.

The sudden shout made Carmen jump high and she managed to throw
her book away in the process. It landed with a loud slam a
couple meters away and she sighed as she glanced at it then
turned back to the young man that startled her, getting ready to
apologize when he beat her to it. Surprised, she stared at him,
taking in every gorgeous detail from head to toe and sadly
probably not doing it very discreetly. The guy was hot! Like,
make her weak in the knees, hot! But that just made her more
certain that he'd scared her on purpose just for kicks. Since
she'd been too busy checking him out she'd not even heard what
he actually said. Trying to brush over the situation she did a
nervous half giggle, feeling like an idiot while kind of
avoiding looking at him. She was fairly certain she couldn't
look him straight in the eye without melting anyway.
- Haa haa, very funny..
Her voice sounded nervous as she gave him a forced smile then
went to pick up her book.
- Test the new girl. She's a Slytherin so extra points if she
drops her book, right?
She dusted the book off and carefully removed a leaf that had
gotten stuck between the pages.
- I'm just gonna leave now soo.. yeah.
She motioned towards the exit as her cheeks started burning.
When she finally got her feet to move she picked up a hand to
cover her eyes, feeling beyond ashamed with herself. The worst
part was that he wore the hufflepuff colors so without a doubt
her brother knew him and if her brother found out about this
she'd be doomed.

Oliver was very confused by the girl's statement and stared at
her in utter disbelief. Why in the world would anyone do such a
thing?!
-What?! No! That would be terribly mean!
He took a few steps closer, trying to will her inti not leaving.
There were few who came to the greenhouses at their own free
will and even fewer that actually liked being there, and he
would not forgive himself if he was the reason that she would
not want to come back.
He looked down at the ground, debating for a few seconds how to
not scare her away more than he already had, before looking up
and giving her a pleading look.
-I didn't hear you, I swear. A-and I'm usually alone here, and
it's the first day of the school so even less reason for anyone
to show up.. So.. You startled me, that's all.
He realised that he was rambling on but he didn't want her to
think he was a bully that treated first years horribly. He
extended his had and gave her a small smile.
-I'm Oliver, nice to meet you.
