Gabriel grinned and bumped his hip against Will.
-Fair enough, but why would I run? I'll just have to do the same
if she bails on him. That deal goes both ways now, but that
doesn't mean I'll wanna stop playing with you, handsome~
Gabriel studied the couple in front of them. They would probably
either burn each other, or the kingdom to the ground, question
was wich one....
-But, I have to ask, how did you end up with her? You seem fond
of her despite slammed to the ground.
Michael was a bit surprised that Syrena had told him the truth.
He had heard rumours of the heiress dying, but there had not
been many so it had been unclear if there had even been an heir
at all. Another feeling surfaced. Guilt. Again. He knew there
was not much he could do right now. And the spell couldn't be
that effective, right? There was no way...?
-Well, your higness, your insults are worse than a sailor's, so
I wouldn't have taken you for a crown princess.
He smirked at her, burying his guilty feelings in the process,
he could deal with them later if it actually became something of
it. Growing up in a guild would do that to you, both giving you
a flavoured vocabulary and unhealthy coping mechanisms, but she
was so fun to tease.
-Me? Told you already, I was a farmer's boy, an- No, no, I'm
kidding! No need for that elbow!
Laughing, he put his hands up so she wouldn't punch him in the
ribs again.
-That's the story I usually tell, because people usually trust
me more then. Because a hard working farmer would never have a
bad bone in him, or be intelligent enough to see all the
glittering riches and be tempted to take some of it.
Michael scoffed, gullible nobles.
-But there's not much to tell really, I grew up on the streets
of Blythe. Never met my dad, and mom... She was a prostitute
with some connections to the Golden Blades, some of the members
liked her and she could dump me with one of the women there
while she was working.
It felt wierd to tell the actual truth for once and not make up
some reasonable story as to why he was somewhere. He had not
told anyone really except Gabriel, who had seen right through
his shit somehow and pestered him until he eventually caved.
-I don't remember much of her either. She died when I was four,
don't know how, it could have been a violent client, some other
gang... Who knows... The guild took me in, out of pity I think,
or to get some errand boy. Start them young and all that. So I
was on a path to become a street thug like so many other young,
poor boys, beating people up for some silver and a warm meal.
But.. Zargo saw something in me I guess.. One day he gave me a
knife and told me to stab him.
He chuckled at the memory.
-I had the enthusiasm alright, but no finesse, he beat the shit
out of me that day and told me to come back the next day. He
taught me to fight, to use a dagger effectively.. All I know
really... He was a tough teacher, but I learned quickly.
~By threatening to, and following through with, locking me up in
a trunk if I failed~
He gave her a small smile, tryimg to ignore the cold sweat that
broke out along his spine at the memory.
-Anything else you'd like to know, wild cat? Or you could tell
me how you ended up with the Black Ocean?

Will winked at him before answering.
- I don't care why you'd run. i simply let you know I'd find you
if you did. As for Syrena, I picked her up when she was eight
and roaming the steets of Nattica. She's my protégé, I suppose.
I watched her grow from a scrawny little kid to the woman she is
today and thanks to her magic I'm all too familiar with being
slammed into things.
He snorted but a smile was gracing his lips.
- How come you're not settled yet, Sweet pea? You don't appear
to be the timid type.
Syrena gave him a loght glare when he used the royal title on
her. She absolutely hated being associated with it but let it
slip since he distracted her with trying his bullshit again. A
little elbowthreat later he started talking and she couldn't
help looking at him when he spoke. Most kids who ended up in
some shady guild like The Golden Blades had a sh*tty background
and it was never easy being an orphan. She could understand his
attitude since it kind of reflected her own in a way. His
question at the end made her peer up at him with a stubborn
look.
- Yeah, two questions, actually. First, why the f*ck are you
helping me? Golden boys don't help people even when they owe
them so why are you, and the second question is would you mind
wiping that grin off your face? You look like an idiot.
She shook her head in an exasperated manner to try and hide her
smirk. She had gone way too long without giving him any insults
so it was definitly due.
- Oh, and as for Black Ocean, Will picked me up when I was eight
and took me under his wing. He's been my rock ever since. That's
why I love him.
She gave Michael a sneaky sideglance, gauging his reaction. She
really wanted to tick him off again. She wasn't sure how to
handle his relaxed side so she needed the spiteful jerk back and
soon.

Gabriel pouted.
-Well, I'm only 20.. but most just see me as a fun weekend, at
most a fun week, but not a life. They might want to try a
relationship with a man, but.. I'm not the one they'll choose in
the end. An assassin specialising in poisons and staged
suicides? Yeah, they rather go for an arrangement with the
closeted baker across the street before me... Something less
different. I'm more like a test ride really...
He gave him a half-hearted smile. No matter how much he
approached people, they always shyed away, no matter what he did
or said, the longest they'd stayed was two weeks. Except
Michael, but he was, another story.....
-Yeah I don't like magic for that reason... One too many brick
walls, really... Makes you distance yourself from that kind of
thing... To be honest, Michael does it too sometimes when drunk,
but he can behave when sober.. It really is dad- Zargo's
fault... Put a wild animal against a wall and you'll get similar
results. He never got to learn how to use it properly....
Michael laughed.
-Oh don't see it as a favour to you, wild cat, more as a f*ck
you to Zargo. Besides, you have the necklace, and to get any
sort of information I would need it... I have some leads but
they are either useless or need further questioning.
He ckenched his jaw. Don't fall for it, don't fall for it,
don't..
-Too bad he's found some new toy to play with ....
Focus on work, focus on work.... Gabriel has control of Will...
-The crest belongs to one Count Eldridge. Quite the small fry
really, but he has been up and coming lately if i don't remember
incorrectly. Think it had to do with some business across the
border. He actually has some business in Porthaven, and not all
of it might be as clean as he wants it to be. I wanted to dig
into that, perhaps find something useful..

Will couldn't help the wide grin that appeard as he looked down
at Gabriel.
- Well then, Sweet pea. It just so happens that I'm not
interested in a baker. Little Sy there also staged a suicide so
I suppose I have a thing for that. Also if you specialize in
poison we're going to have a lot of fun. I know plenty of people
I'd love to give a personal 'f*ck you' drink to.
He felt excited, the pain in his chest subsiding slowly. There
was more to Gabriel than what meets the eye but before he got to
the whole poison an entire city part he needed to find out just
how loud he could make him moan.
- You should join Black Ocean. You and your little mage friend.
What kind does he use? Wait, he's not a fire mage is he? Because
if he is then he can't have Syrena.
Syrena snickered a little, a mean smile on her face.
- You wouldn't find anything even if it hit you in the face.
Remember, it took me five minutes to find what you spent a month
looking for.
She wasn't sure why she was trying to make him pis*ed enough to
start pis*ing her off but she didn't know how else to keep
herself from thinking about their night together.
- The second I find that noble I'm ditching you. I mean, feel
free to dig through his trash and all but I'm out as soon as I
know what the deal with the necklace is. Technically I don't
even need you anymore now either. Which reminds me.. Will?
She turned and walked backwards for a bit while smiling at Will
who was busy getting, what most people would call too close for
comfort, to Gabriel. He looked up at her with an almost bored
look.
- Dumb*ss spilled the beans. Wanna run ahead with me?
- No way. You can have the mare though if you're only going
ahead. I want her back by sundown.
Syrena stopped walking backwards and instead nodded and hurried
up to him, swiftly getting in the saddle. Will held on briefly
to the reins, giving her a stern look.
- Stay out of trouble, Sy.
- I know, I love you.
- I love you too.
She winked at him before shortening the reins and thundering off
in a fast gallop leaving the guys behind in the dust. Will
sighed but simply adjusted his arm around Gabriel before turning
to Michael.
- Don't worry too much. With any luck she'll have done most of
the work for us by the time we arrive. Now I have a question for
you though. What are your intentions with the Siren of Black
Ocean?

Gabriel started smiling. Oh, this could be so much fun. Walking
two fingers up Will's chest, he glanced up at him.
-I'm all ears handsome~ I have a few things I have been wanting
to try, like forest viper venom, haven't seen that one up close
before~
He paused a bit at being asked to switch guilds, but quickly
winked at Will, dragging his tongue along his upper lip.
-I'd have to take you out for a test ride before deciding
anything like that, wouldn't I? Would be a shame if didn't live
up to your big talk~
It was not like he had not thought of it himself. Michael and
him had talked about what it would be like to leave the Golden
Blades, but having a guild full of p*ssed off assassins,
actively hunting them... Yeah, not that exciting. Gabriel, maybe
not so much, but Michael... He would have a big target on his
back since Zargo would not take him jumping ship lightly.
-Oh Michael? No. Or.. More like he tries to use fire magic, but
I don't think it's his real element. But I couldn't tell which
one would be right either. He's stubborn like that.
Michael just stood and watched Syrena disappear behind a bend in
the road. He couldn't believe it and he wanted to roar out his
frustration at being such a blind fool. She had played him like
the cheap lute that he was, using his hostility towards Will to
get him to give her the information she needed, because he had
not wanted to gauge out the bastard's eyeballs, he probably
should have. She was good at what she did, he had to give her
that. And he had failed miserably for listening to his dick more
than his real head. Glaring at Will and Gabriel, he simply
scoffed.
-Right now? Well she better hope she find something or I might-
-A spanking might be enough, Michel~
Gabriel winked at him while Michael just glared back.
-Or you can come play with us~
-I'm not interested in your type of play~ Gabriel, you know
that.
With that he turned his back to them and started walking again.
Soon enough they reached Porthaven, a town that had sprung up
around a large, deep bay to handle trade from overseas that
Bellmare didn't have the capacity for, due to its small and
shallow harbour. Michael had walked in front of Will and Gabriel
for the remainder of the journey had quickly tuned them out.
They had started discussing poisons and teasing eachother about
the upcoming night's activities, and he did not need to nor want
to hear about that. He would most likely hear them through the
walls anyway if the inn would have the same paper-thin walls as
most other inns. He had got to spend too much time alone with
his own brain on the walk there, when Syrena had been there he
had atlest had someone to bicker with. His temper had cooled
some after she had ridden of and he didn't like to admit it, but
he hoped he would see Syrena soon, she had atleast been
interesting to talk to. Not because he would like it, no, but so
he could get the information out of her and be rid her,
finally... Yes, finally...

Will couldn't help but chuckle at Michael's sour mood.
- His loss, really.
He grinned happily, still in a good mood and had plenty of fun
talking to Gabriel all the way to Porthaven. He couldn't help
but notice Gabriel seemed all too focused on certain activities
but it made Will all the more curious as to why he kept up the
charmer's facade so much and Michael's absolute refusal to join
in their conversation didn't get past him either. As they
entered the town he started looking around for his mare since he
from experience knew that was the one he'd spot first and sure
enough, after walking around for about half an hour he found the
mare happily eating hay outside a bar.
- Let's find out what she's been up to, shall we?
He motioned towards the door before dragging Gabriel inside,
glancing around until his eyes fell on Syrena, stradling a drunk
man with a playful smile. He wondered if he should say anything
but quickly decided that it was her own fault if Michael got
pi*sed at her.
- Hey, Syrena. You busy?
She looked up and blinked in surprise at them before leaning
forward, whispering something in the man's ear while the drunk
wrapped a lazy arm over her back. She swatted the arm away with
a teasing smile then quickly got off his lap and hurried towards
them.
- Just trying to find a room for the night. Turns out the
necklace had simply been taken during a robbery and the blood
was from a pig. I literally only returned it so that was a huge
hassle for absolutely nothing.
She snorted, folding her arms over her chest with an annoyed
face.

Something about Will made Gabriel want to have Will want him for
him, not just for what he could do in the bedroom. But what if
he was not enough? What could anyone really like about a
malnourished street kid with a big mouth? Who would ever really
want someone like that? So many others before him, all promising
to stay, promising it would be alright... But Will was different
right? He felt warm, strong, and safe. Maybe..?
Zargo's words kept nagging in the back of his head, that he was
doomed to be a lonely soul because he would not ever be...
Enough... Even though he kept up the carefree attitude, he
really wanted Will to see him, not the bubbly and bold persona,
but Gabriel, with all the broken pieces inside. But he could not
ever show him them. He had shared some things, but there was so
much more...
Or if not Will then.. Maybe..? He glanced at Michael's stoic
frame, knowing Michael had ignored them and probably been
brooding over Syrena, denying even wanting to ever be in the
same room as her again but still only thinking of her. But a
part of him still hoped that, if he spoke loud enough, would he
hear him then?
Letting himself be lead to the inn, he smiled at Syrena, sitting
on the drunkard's lap. He could not wait to see Michael's
reaction.
Michael really did not want to crush each one of the filthy
man's fingers one by one and enjoy the screaming of terror and
pain, and he barely kept himself from lunging at the bastard.
Pushing past Will and Gabriel, he noticed Gabriel's smirk when
their eyes met. It made him pause and grit his teeth. He was not
going to dance from her pipe, not any more. If she wanted to
share a room with someone she found at an inn, he was not going
to stay in her way. Well then, there was not much else to do now
that the whole mission had really gone belly up. He headed to
the bar and caught the eye of one of the barmaids. Besides, two
could play that game.
-A whiskey if you have it sweetheart, please?

Syrena's eyes followed Michael as he headed to the bar, a
surprised look on her face.
- Really? you dragged me here for nothing and now you're just
going to ignore me?
Will shook his head and grabbed her arm, pulling her and Gabriel
to an empty table and forcing them both to sit. Syrena kept
glaring towards Michael until Will flicked his finger on her
forehead making her flinch back in pain, rubbing the sore spot
with an angry glare.
- Leave him alone. I take it the noble didn't mention being
robbed by a priest?
Syrena pouted but let her hand drop and, with one last venomous
glare at Michael, returned her attention to Will.
- Yeah. Apparently it was two thugs. One held a knife on him
while the other took everything of value and shoved it in a bag
with cut off pigs feet. Then they vanished. It happened months
ago too so it's not like there is any way to track them down and
ask how an old geezer got a hold of it. I tried lulling the
noble but he couldn't remember them other than that they had
brown cloaks.
Will sighed and leaned his chin in his hand with a thoughtful
expression.
- So what are you going to do now? Go back to Chris?
Syrena hesitated, her eyes briefly darting back to Michael.
- I gue-
-Celina?
Syrena froze on the spot. That voice.. Could it be? No. It
couldn't possibly.. She slowly turned and gasped slightly as her
eyes landed on a middle aged woman in basic travel wear standing
a couple feet away. Her black hair put up in a messy bun and the
clear seafoam eyes, just like her own, prickled with tears.
Syrena opened her mouth to say something but nothing came out as
the woman quickly walked up to her, pulling her out of her chair
and embraced her, tears streaming down her eyes.
- I can't believe I finally get to see you again, my little
princess.
Syrena blinked a few times, trying to get her voice to function
again and as it finally did it came out small, scared.
- Mom?

Michael listened to Syrena's grumbling, getting more irritated
with each word. She was the one who had demanded the necklace.
She was the one who had left as soon as she got a name. She was
the one who had not looked back, and it was now somehow his
problem?! It was not like the whole plan had been fool proof
from the beginning! He had known who the crest belonged to, yes,
but how was he supposed to know the idiot had been robbed?! He
simply could not keep an eye on every lowlife noble in the
kingdom and what they were up to!
Not being able to hold back anymore, he stood up from the bar
and went over to the table where the others were sat, ready to
give her a piece of his mind. He was about to but was completely
caught off guard by the timid woman walking up to Syrena,
bawling her eyes out. It was.. Her mother?! Quickly glancing
towards Will and Gabriel, seeing them to be just as confused as
he was, he slowly turned his gaze back to mother and daughter.
Their earlier conversation popped back into his mind, about
sirens being abel to sence when another siren became pregnant. A
cold sweat broke out along his spine. Syrena might be
pregnant... by him... It was all but confirmed right? She'd said
three days, but she could be mistaken right? How else could her
mother have found her? The thought was so compelling, which was
what scared him the most. He had no desire for any children. So
why with her?

Syrena let her mother hug her for a moment until she shoved her
back and gave her a scared look.
- What are you doing here? How did you find me?
Her mother gave her a gentle smile before letting her eyes
travel over the company.
- It's a long story, my child. Let me tell you everything. Do
you mind if I sit?
She didn't wait for an answer and gracefully sat down next to
Will who gave her a curious look. Syrena swallowed hard before
stifly sitting down, slightly trembling.
- Does father know?
Her mother gave her a loving smile while shaking her head.
- No, Celina.
- Syrena.
Her mother hesitated but finally smiled and nodded.
- I see. Syrena. Your father thinks you passed eleven years ago
and he will remain in said belief for as long as I live and
breathe. He wouldn't understand, being born royal, the struggles
of a siren princess.
Syrena blinked in surprise, glancing at Michael while her mind
was racing. Her mother had found her so fast so she must have
felt something. Was she really pregnant? She brushed her hand
over her belly while she started feeling sick. She was no where
ready to be a mother yet. However her mother reached for her
hand and gave her a sad smile.
- Celi- I mean, Syrena. I came to find you because you're
nearing your twentieth birthday and hence I knew you'd find your
'caller' soon.
A frown appeared on Syrena's face as her mother nodded.
- What's a caller?
Her mother got a dreamy look in her eyes before she spoke.
- Your caller is a man matched to you by the ocean.
- Come again?
Syrena looked absolutely baffled at the weirdness while her
mother got something playful in her eyes.
- He's going to be the love of your life, my dear. It may not
seem like an important thing but a siren needs her caller as
much as she needs acess to water. Listen closely, my child. It's
going to seem unfair in every way but it's the will of the sea.
Your caller is the only man in this world that will never ever
be affected by your magic. You're going to want him but you will
never be able to enchant him or lull him in any way. Your magic
simply have no effect on him.
Syrena visibly paled at that while her mother patted her hand.
- He may want you too child but he won't feel bonded to you the
same way you will to him. I came to warn you so you'd be ready
for when you would find him. After all, a caller could easily
take your life since you'll be so much more vulnerable to him.
- No..How do I avoid that?
Her mother looked surprised at Syrena's begging face, her eyes
slowly wandering over the men present. She got a stern look
before turning back to Syrena with an apologetic face.
- I'm sorry, my child, but you already met him.
- What?!
Syrena's voice came out like a squeal while she started
breathing faster. This couldn't be happening! She'd be in danger
from a stranger for her entire life now?
- Calm down, my child. This is how I found you after all. I
could feel when you met him so I went to the monestary to look
for you but you weren't there so I headed towards Bellmare to
try and find you but ended up getting a little lost but here you
are.
Syrena stilled, her face in absolute shock while Will opened and
closed his mouth a couple times. Oh, fu*k.
