Michael was caught off guard and was slammed hard into the wall
from the pressure of the ball of water, before he dropped to his
knees and started coughing up the water he had accidentally
swallowed. He cursed in between his fits of coughing, damn
witch. When he was able to stop coughing, he struggled to his
feet and made his way to the hallway. He was not sure whether or
not he had heard the front door open so he made his way towards
the study and looked out through the window, but since it was
positioned towards the back of the monastery he could not see
her or which way she may have gone. He slammed his fist on the
windowsill and cursed before he made his way down. Well this
whole operation had been a catastrophic mess and he had no
reason to stay at the monastery any longer.
He made his way towards the dorms so that he could collect some
of his items, he had no reason to be in a rush to try and catch
up to Syrena any more. She was probably long gone by now, at
least he would be if he was in her position. He figured his best
bet would maybe be to try and catch up with her on the way back
to the Black Ocean hideout, if he remembered correctly it was to
the south east of their current position in the port town of
Bellmare. He had a rough idea of where it was but there was no
way of knowing which route she would take to get there.
Michael was so occupied with his own thoughts that he almost ran
into one of the bigwigs of the place. His balding head and beady
eyes reminded Michael of a disease-ridden rat.
- Brother Elias, I did not have the pleasure of seeing you at
mass today. This is your third strike this week and you know
what that means, don't you?
Michael huffed and averted his eyes.
Isolation. Again. Michael gritted his teeth and tried to appear
as humble as possible.
-I'm terribly sorry brother. It seems I cannot get a hang of the
routines here no matter how hard I try.
The old man smiled at him.
-I remember how it was to be young and full of spirit, but
you'll learn how to suppress it. In fact...
Oh, how Michael wished he could slit the man's throat and watch
him choke on his own blood. But the bigwig was important enough
that people would start asking questions if he were to
disappear. Then it hit him. He had no reason anymore to hide and
follow the rules. The mission had just gone belly up and was now
carried of by a sea witch. He could do whatever he wanted as
long as he was not caught. He quickly glanced around to make
sure the place was deserted, he did not need unnecessary
casualties.
He had not made a kill in forever, and this guy was really
getting on his nerves. Slowly, an eerie smile appeared on his
face but the bigwig did not seem to notice the change in
demeanor from the man in front of him.
-Hey, brother.... Why don't you just shut the f*ck up?
Michael could not keep the disgust away from his voice any
longer and the surprise on the mans face made it all the better.
Nobody had probably ever dared to interrupt him or talk back for
the last fifty years.
-Brother Elias, what's g-
-I said shut it old man!
With the speed of lightning, Michael pulled a hidden blade from
his robes and slit the man's throat in one clean swipe. The
bigwig did not even have time to comprehend what just happened,
he just gasped and gargled, all while the beady eyes spun around
until they locked on to Michael's cold and calculating ones. The
man tried to reach out, but stumbled and fell to the ground,
while Michael simply stepped out of reach and watched the life
drain from the man's eyes.
When he lay still, Michael stepped over him and continued
towards the dorms like nothing had happened. He quickly ditched
the robes, thank god he could finally ditch them, and threw on a
pair of pants, a shirt and his leather boots that he had had
tucked away during his stay. He picked up his satchel and
quickly checked the content. It contained what he had been able
to grab during his stay but it was not much, some copper and
silver coins, a jeweled candlestick, and some books that maybe
looked valuable. Monks did not own shit besides their robe and
it f*cking showed, and most of the real valuables were closely
guarded so there was no chance in hell that he would be able to
pocket any of those. With his already foul mood worsening by the
second, he hoisted the bag onto his shoulder and turned to
leave. He almost hoped he would run into some other unfortunate
bastard. Maybe that would lighten his mood a little.

Syrena had indeed opened the front door but she cmosed it while
still inside and carefully sneaked into the adjacent room so she
could watch the jerk leave. She cluld hear him coughing and he
clearly didn't expect her o still be inside since he left
without even checking the first floor. Was he a rookie or
something? She let him leave before sneaking up to the second
floor and exiting through the window in the study. As she
carefully looked around the corner she saw the idiot talking to
a munk. Was he still going to stay and keep up the act? That
seemed like a dumb desicion but then he caught her off guard by
slicing the man's throat. Her eyebrows shot up at the clean cut
and a small smile appeared when she studied his cold face.
Perhaps he wasn't a rookie after all. She let him disappear
somewhere before sneaking into the main building to find the
abbess. She spent a good hour talking to the lady about
everything holy before the geezer she needed to frame joined the
conversation. As she suspected he took a lot of interest in her
but she didn't really care for any other proof at the moment.
She needed to get the necklace sorted out first. After a short
conversation with the geezer she was led back to the gate with a
pack of scrolls that was to be sent to whatever bullshit
monestary she had blurted out that she came from. As if she'd
actually deliver them. She bowed deeply to the abbess before
muttering something about holy this and protect you that and
bless the goats lr whatever. It sounded truthful anyway.
As soon as she had gotten rid of those idiots she started
walking down the road for a little while until she got a signal
from Chris and she dove into the shrubbery and hidden shade of
the forest to get out of the robe, put on a tight little dress
and kneehigh boots with a leatherbelt resting on her hips. She
attached a little pouch to it and put the necklace inside before
rummaging through the scrolls in case there was something of
value. Obviously it wasn't, not that she expected there to be
and when she finished with it she soaked it all in water to make
it unreadable and then burried it in the ground along with the
robe by making a mudbath that sucked it all down in seconds.
When she finished she joined Chris by the old draft horse and
they slowly started the long way back towards their guild.
Knowing the jerk was out there though she decided to head north
for a little while before slightly turning east. She kept their
pace slow in hopes that it would keep the jerk ahead of them and
she hence would be able to intercept before having to deal with
his shitty attitude anymore.

Michael gritted his teeth as he walked towards the stables, not
hesitating to kill any and all idiots that tried to question him
about where he was going or any other stupid things they might
come up with. He knew he should not go around killing innocent
civilians, in a monestary of all places, but his fingers itched
and he could feel the adrenaline pumping through his veins. He
had not had a chanse like this in ages, and he could not simply
stop now when the opportunity basically served itself on a mud
brown platter. The guild master would probably be furious, but
he would be that about the job going belly up as well and
falling into the hands of a rival guild. So he did not
particularly care for Zargo's feelings at the moment, he had
endured that hellhole for more than a month, only to have it
blow up in his face. He was going to f*cking enjoy salvaging the
pieces as they rained down around him.
Reaching the stables, Michael quickly checked what options he
had available and groaned. Sure, he had not had a mount of his
for a while now, the poor thing had broken one of it's legs and
he had had no other choice but to put it out of its misery, and
he had not been picky to begin with, but this was almost
ridiculous. Two small work ponies, a mule and what looked to be
a tired, old riding horse, peaked out at him. He pinched the
bridge of his nose, trying to not curse aloud at his seemingly
endless misfortune. He tried to think of a better way but came
up short. He needed a mount if he wanted to have any chance of
catching up with Syrena but he could not look too suspicious
while doing it. He studied his options again. The riding horse
would probably be his best bet and was also probably the easiest
one to get rid of later. Almost anyone could find a use for a
horse, couldn't they? He located what looked to be its bridle
and saddle and quickly tacked up before leading the horse to the
southern gate and mounting up. Finally, he would be rid of the
place. Before leaving, as a final middle finger towards the
monastery, he tried to send a fireball towards one of the sheds,
in hopes of burning the whole place to the ground, but Michael
only manged to send a large cloud of black smoke in its general
vicinity and scaring his new horse in the process.
~
Michael was wondering if the Gods were having a good time,
looking down and laughing at his expense. It had rained nonstop
for the past two days since he had left the monastery, maybe
some divine retribution for the stunt he had pulled, and he was
tired and soaked to the bone. The ride to Bellmare should have
taken him no more than two days, yet here he was, in the middle
of who knew were, with a horse that hald 'walk' as its only
speed, yet still seemed to be afraid of everything, bolting in
the wrong direction at any opportunity it got. He pulled the
cloak tighter around himself and muttered a few well chosen
words. If Zargo offered him any monastery gig in the future he
would spit in the man's face.
In the distance he thought he maybe could make out the shape of
a building and Michael's hope rose a little. Hopefully it was an
inn that he could stop by to dry off for a few hours at least.

Syrena had bren annoyed by basically everything since leaving
the monestary, especially since it started raining. Chris didn't
mind the rain and kept running around and jumping in puddles
like the eight year old she was while the drafthorse shared
Syrena's gloom. Luckily there had been no sight of the annoying
jerk since then and she was finally beginning to relax since
they were close to the guild. As opposed to what most people
thought, Bellmare did have a guild building but it wasn't the
actual one. It was a decoy to keep enemies from their actual
guildhall which was a bit further to the south from Bellmare to
keep it's members safe from intruders. She finally spotted the
guildhall in the distance when Chris suddenly started screaming
at the top of her lungs and ran towards a man on a horse ahead
of them.
- BOULDER!! ARE YOU COMING BACK FROM A JOB TOO?! HERE BULDER!
IT'S ME, CHRIS!! BOOOOULDER!!!
- Chris, wait! Don't run off!
The child rushed forward with a happy laughter, jumping in the
puddles and giggling when the horse spooked. However she froze
on the spot when she noticed the man on the horse wasn't Boulder
but a stranger and Syrena felt like smacking her head against a
wall when she recognized the unruly hair. What the hell was the
jerk doing on his way to their guildhall?

Michael had not anticipated seeing anyone outside in the shitty
weather and was caught off guard when the horse once again
spooked and tried to run off to god knows where. He managed not
to get thrown in the mud this time, but cursed while the horse
nervously trotted around. He shot the kid who had yelled a dirty
look but bit his tongue. The kid could not have be older than
ten but probably closer to seven, and still seemed to have some
of that childhood joy and innocence left. No need to brake it
over a skittish horse. He could make out a figure i few feet
away, was it the mother of the the little rascal? The figure
seemed somewhat familiar though...
He dismounted and stepped closer to try and get a better look at
the woman, the damn rain making it difficult to make out any
features. He was more than surprised to see that it was Syrena,
no longer dressed in a nun's robes but something that actually
flattered her figure. Not that the nun's robes had done her any
disservice either, she was hot and she knew how to use it.
Michael had to bite the inside of his cheeks to get his mind
back on track, this was not the time to start fantasising about
a member of a rival guild, no matter how good looking they were.
He tried to wipe some of the rain off his face, perhaps the job
was not lost yet.
-Hey, almost didn't recognise you there wild cat, now that
you're not dressed in a potato sack that is. Thought you might
have made it further than this though. You seemd to be in a
hurry last time I saw you.
He smirked at her before he turned his attention to the kid and
crouched down to be eye level with the kid. He could see that
he, or she, he couldn't tell, was a bit intimidated by him but
he smiled softly andtried to appear as non threatening as
possible.
-Hey kid, no hard feelings about scaring the horse, it spooks
all the time. But you could try and tell your mama overthere to
be nicer. She has quite the temper.
He nodded in Syrena's direction and cocked an eyebrow at her
almost horrified expression. He rose back up and shrugged.
-What? You're nineteen right? And the kid, I'd say seven? Could
be as old as ten, but I highly doubt it.
He could not help but smirk at her.
-Don't look so shocked wild cat, I've seen worse.

Syrena had a hard time to come up with a good comeback since the
mere thought of being Chris' mother was just absurd. Luckily
Chris beat her too it with a disgusted noise.
- Ew, fuck no! Sy isn't my mom, dimwit! She's my teacher, you
old fleebag! And stop drooling over her, it makes me sick,
weirdo!
- Chris!
The kid pouted and folded her arms over her chest while Syrena
scowled at her.
- And to think I thought you were Boulder. Talk about a
disappointment.
Syrena facepalmed before reaching out to grab Chris' collar and
pulling her back.
- Will you shut your trap, Chris? Get on the horse and bring the
trinket to the master while I deal with this one.
Chris shrugged and did as she was told but not before sticking
her tongue out at the stranger. Syrena pointed towards the
guildhall with an angry expression and finally the girl trotted
off. Syrena sighed heavily before turning back to the anniying
jerk, her hands on her hips.
- Alright, dumbass. What the fuck are you doing out here?
Despite giving Chris the creeps.

Michael could not hold back a laugh. At least the kid had
spirit.
-You could have fooled me, wild cat. You have the same flavoured
insults.
He shrugged. Syrena seemed a bit more hostile than necessary,
surely she knew why he would try to track her down?
-Well, I was on my way to Bellmare to try and catch up to you
since you have something of mine, a certain trinket.. But then,
between the rain and this lovely flea ridden nag spooking every
few miles, I think I came a bit off course.
Michael smirked at Syrena and crossed his arms over his chest.
-But now, since I already found you, it seems i don't have to go
to there anymore. Shame really, I wish I'd had the chance to
reek of fish for the next two weeks. To really get a feel for
Bellmare, you know?
He tilted his head to the side with a curious smile. She really
seemed to be on edge for some reason. The kid had already left,
so it couldn't be out of fear of him harming the kid... It had
to be something else.
-Question is, wild cat, what are you doing here? You should have
been way ahead of me if...
The answer hit him as the words left his lips, and he felt like
an absolute fool. Of course she would be on edge, this was their
hideout, the real hideout, he was fairly certain about that. He
pinched the bridge of his nose and groaned.
-I'm a dead idiot soon, ain't I?
He was in deep sh*t. He was in such deep sh*t. This was not how
he imagined he would die, at 23, in the rain, outside a rival
guild hall. He had to think of something, anything.

Syrena snorted and did a quick flick with her wrist, the water
suddenly creating a bubble around them so the rain wouldn't fall
on them anymore. She let out a breath before looking towards the
guildhall with a sad expression.
- First of all, finders keepers. I found it so it's mine, not
yours.
She turned back to him, giving him a onceover. He looked like
he'd been through hell. Obviously he had found the hideout but
he wasn't the first rival to do it and honestly they usually
didn't kill them since they had a wizard that could wipe out
memory in the guild. She was sure Chris was on her way to get
him but for some reason Syrena had a feeling in her stomack that
wiping his memory was a bad idea.
- Second of all, Bellmare doesn't make you reek of fish for two
weeks. It only lasts for one. And third of all..
She glanced back towards the guildhall and noticed two figured
moving in the rain.
- Shit. He's coming.
She bit her lip and looked back at the jerk, feeling indecisive.
She wasn't sure what made her cave in. Perhaps his striking blue
eyes or the fact that she'd felt drawn to him since their first
meeting. She rubbed her face with both her heands before turning
completely against the guildhall and the approaching figures.
- I'm going to be in so much trouble..
She raised her hands and balled them into fists before doing a
quick motion that solidified the bubble in an instant. The sound
of the rain disappeared and an eery silence remained with only
the sound of them breathing remained.
- As long as you stay in this bubble they can't see you or hear
you but you'll hear what's going on outside.
She glanced at him but quickly looked away when she started
blushung. What the hell?! She never blushed! Shaking her head
she stepped out of the bubble and walked up to the two figures.
- He left.
The man in front of her cocked an eyebrow, scanning the area.
- Smart kid. Chris said you liked him.
Syrena flinched before scowling.
- As if! Who could possibly like a dumb jerk like that?
The man watched her silently before smirking at her.
- Guess Chris was right. The siren finally found a sailor she
doesn't want to drown, eh?
- I'LL DROWN THE LOT OF YOU IF YOU DON'T GET YOUR HEADS BACK ON
STRAIGHT YOU SHITHEAD!
With that she stomped past the man who chuckled as he followed
her.

-Wait, who's coming? Wild c-. Syrena! Syrena!! D*mn it!
Michael stepped forward and tried to catch her but pulled his
hand back before he reached the outer edge of the bubble and
cursed. He had wanted to ask her to stay, to explain, but he
knew they would be in even more trouble if she had stayed. He
took a step back and glanced around. It was not as bad when he
could see and hear what was going on around him, even though the
view was blurry and the sounds were distorted, like he was under
water, observing what was going on on the surface. It was...
somewhat better, but it did not help much. Most disturbing was
the unsettling echo of his own ragged breathing. It was just a
bit claustrophobic, just a bit. Not that bad.. Not that... bad
at all.
Michael tried to follow the conversation happening outside of
his bubble, but he could feel the pressure on his chest increase
and he sat down on his heels incase it would get worse.
The men did not seem totally convinced by Syrena's story that he
had left. Or they were just messing with her. He couldn't tell
between the bubble distorting their facial expressions, and the
rising panic.
What ever he did, he could not lose his cool right now. He could
not afford that slip up, not only would he most likely be
killed, but probably Syrena too.
-Sh*t...
Happy thoughts, happy thoughts... He.. He was glad that this was
probably not his final day, if he managed to make it through
this. He could feel a cold sweat break out all over and he tried
to take deep breaths despite the echoes it made, he could leave
when he wanted, if he just waited for the people to leave. He
was no longer helpless, was no longer locked away. He could...
He shook hid head, think of something else dumb*ss. Why not have
him killed? What motivation could she have to keep him alive? To
trade information perhaps? Yeah that could be it, he was in her
debt now after all. So favour for a favour? He could work with
that. Yes, yes he could... It would also take his mind of his
own panicked breathing for a while.

Avoiding to glance over her shoulder, Syrena hurried back to the
guildhall as fast as she could with Echo behind her. He didn't
say anything else but his annoying smirk picked at her nerves.
Luckily he disappeared away to the dining hall when they entered
the guild while she hurried to the master who was studying the
bloody necklace with Chris.
- Master?
The old man looked up and nodded at her before returning his
attention to the necklace.
- Welcome back, Siren. Where did you find this?
- In the old geezer's bedroom.
The old man frowned and thought for a while before shaking his
head.
- I don't understand why he'd keep it there.
- is it not a noble crest?
The master cocked an eyebrow at her before giving the necklace
back.
- I don't deal with nobles. If you want to find the owner of
this necklace I suggest you do some digging. And while you're at
it how about you actually finish the fuc*ing job I sent you on!
Syrena rolled her eyes before shoving the necklace back down in
her pocket. She knew perfectly well that without the owner of
the necklace she didn't have anything on the geezer meaning she
never finished the job. Gritting her teeth she went to her room
to repack her bags with dry clothes before descending the
stairs. Chris joined her with her bag on her shoulder too but
Syrena hesitated to bring her with her this time.
- Hey, Chris. I think I need to do this one on my own. It might
get..intimate.
Chris snorted and folded her arms over her chest.
- Like I'd care.
- I know you don't but the guys I might have to seduce cares if
I have a child. It kind of makes their dicks soft.
Chris rolled her eyes and sighed.
- Men are pathetic.
Syrena smirked at that and ruffled Chris' hair.
- Stay out of trouble.
Chris nodded and Syrena left through the door. She remembered
the jerk saying the crest looked familiar so maybe he knew who
it belonged too. Besides he owed her for keeping him from
getting his fuc*ing mind wiped clean. She tried her best to walk
casually back to the bubble but when she brought it down he was
nowhere in sight. Cursing loudly she tried to look for tracks
but the rain had wiped them all out.
- For fu*k's sake..
She'd have to hunt him down and judging by his earlier state
he'd go looking for an inn. With that in mind she headed
northeast towards Bellmare to see if he perhaps would have gone
that way.
