       Henri Matisse's two versions of The Dance signified a key point
       in his career and in the development of modern painting. It
       reflected Matisse's incipient fascination with primitive art:
       the intense warm color of the figures against the cool
       blue-green background and the rhythmical succession of the
       dancing nudes convey the feelings of emotional liberation and
       hedonism.
