Olaf Scholz recently announced that North Macedonia and Albania
would soon begin negotiations to join the European Union. And on
his trip to kyiv, he and other heads of government carried an
important message in their luggage: you, Ukraine, belong to
Europe. They fight for European values. With you, Europe is
stronger. The Republic of Moldova also needs candidate status.
These signals are extremely important.

of era. Today the European peace and
security order is being reorganized. The fact that there are
States that are moving towards the European Union and want to be
part of us shows how attractive we already are as a center.
However, that appeal comes with political responsibility. This
also includes the enlargement policy. Europe must gain more
weight as a geopolitical actor.

After the end of the Cold War, the European Union has already
shown its capacity for geopolitical and strategic action. Giving
the countries of the former Eastern bloc a prospect of rapid
entry into the Union was a political objective. The European
Union should now apply political pressure to push forward the
upcoming EU accession negotiations. This does not in any way
mean a discount for entry candidates, there is no "fast track."
The Copenhagen Criteria govern , but we must not allow the entry
processes to become bogged down in the Brussels bureaucracy, but
rather actively promote them as a geopolitical project. By the
way, when we talk about enlargement, we also have to talk about
internal reforms.
