The boring one [O]

Northernlights this, Northernlights that. Hourpaw sighed. His
sister got all the attention, being the medicine cat. He was
just a nothing, and no cat cared about him. He didn't even look
like his amazing sister, his pelt was a dull sandy color.
The young tom sighed. Rumenikstar hadn't even assigned him a
mentor yet. He felt so neglected.

the brown tabby bobtail padded back
into camp with a mouse clamped in his jaws, flicking his tail in
greeting to the apprentice sat alone. he stopped at the fresh
kill pile and picked up another mouse as well, going over to
join hourpaw with a slight smile. it wasn't a real smile, but
one that he hoped would cheer the despairing young cat up. "why
so glum?" the deputy, romanarmy, mewed quietly, pushing a mouse
towards his companion and flicking his tail slightly. "it's not
a bad life, is it? i don't think it is, and i have a much
busier, tiring life than you. if i enjoy it, you should!"
he hoped hourpaw was just a little down, just having a little
strop for a while. apprentices had it easy. deputy was a weary
job, and often he couldn't fall asleep fast enough after a day
of hard work. it didn't look much, but just the stress was
enough to tire him out, and then he had the normal warrior
duties, and the organising jobs, and... wow. sometimes he longed
for the apprentice days, where he could be carefree and happy.
there were no problems back then, it seemed.
romanarmy focused on hourpaw, then. the young tom didn't have a
mentor, did he? poor thing. "hey, if you want, i can take you
out for a patrol or hunting or a training session, if you want."
the bobtail offered, his smile becoming genuine again.

Hourpaw turned slowly to the deputy, his expression one of
surprise. "Oh, hello, Romanarmy." the young tom mewed in
greeting, dipping his head. He felt a bit guilty after Romanarmy
mentioned all the hard tasks of a deputy. "Sorry, it's
just...You know, my sister takes the spotlight. I'm nothing
special." Hourpaw mewed glumly, heaving a sigh.
He sat down and watched the deputy's face carefully. Romanarmy
had always been one of his heroes, and he hoped the older tom
would get it. It was hard to live in the shadow of a medicine
cat, even if she was a sharp, bitter one. He couldn't take it
anymore, and it was really bothering him.

romanarmy did understand. he had
lived in the shadow of the past deputy, his father, when he was
just an apprentice. he had barely finished training his first
apprentice when his father died and he was promoted, a big shock
for the young bobtail at the time. not the death of his father ~
sparta had never been nice, and he had always refused a warrior
name ~ but the promotion. roman had never expected such an
honour after his stuck-up daddy, and the pressure of restoring
his family name had gotten to him in recent moons.
"aww, that's too bad. i lived in the shadow of my father, the
previous deputy. it's hard, isn't it?" the brown tabby smiled
sympathetically and flicked hourpaw's ear with his tail
affectionately. "like i said before, i can take you out for a
training session to cheer you up, if you'd like."

Hourpaw smiled faintly. He had heard tales of the past deputy
from Northernlights and his parents. He was glad he wasn't the
only the cat who felt this way. "Yeah, I'd love that. Let's go
train." the sandy tom agreed, getting up and stretching out,
front paws in front of him. It occurred to Hourpaw that he'd
probably always be living in his sister's shadow, since he
wanted nothing to do with herbs and healing. He'd rather be
deputy one day. Mentally marking Romanarmy as his role model,
the little tom ceased stretching and stood up, facing the
deputy.

the deputy nodded. "good. i haven't
had an apprentice in a while, i must say, so forgive me if i'm a
little slow. it's time i got a new apprentice..." he watched
hourpaw for a moment before also standing, stretching himself
out. "where do you wanna go? you probably know the whole drill
better than me, so..." romanarmy smiled sheepishly.

Hourpaw paused a moment, tilting his head in thought. "How
about that little dirt island in the middle of the shallow
swampy area...you know, east of camp?" he suggested. That
island was the most flat ground in ShadowClan, and it was easy
to get there. Just a five minute journey through paw-deep mud.

he nodded. "i trained there!"
suddenly feeling really young again, romanarmy spun round,
bounding in the direction of the dirt island eagerly. maybe
going there would make him feel happier... and maybe hourpaw
would cheer up too. that place held good memories for him of his
youth, of his father, and going there made him feel closer to
starclan. "c'mon!"

Hourpaw laughed at the deputy's hyper outburst and dashed after
him. His paws slammed against the soggy earth, and one paw
flashed before the other at lightning speed. He found himself
catching up to the deputy, and with a determined smile, the
sandy tom forgot all his worries and attempted to pass his
mentor.

see? mentioning the dirt island did
make cats feel better! with a laugh, romanarmy watched as
hourpaw passed him, then shot after his apprentice, soon
catching up with him again and grinning. "you ain't getting rid
of me that easily!" the bobtail called, eyes sparkling
mischievously.
