Some tips on how to become better in WoT

The following are some personal opinion of mine based on my
experience thus far and so should be read with a pinch of salt
as they can be rather personal. Feel free to comment and
dispute. I'll probably (very probably) make some comprehensive
guides regarding different types of tanks when i'm bored enough.
First of all, do not be prejudiced against the type of tanks.
Mediums are not solely snipers and flankers, TDs should not camp
indiscriminately, and heavies are not necessarily suitable for
front-lines. This is simply because each nation have their own
unique flavour and should be played to their advantage
accordingly. Lights should always be scouts? not really, lights
are similar to mediums, they have a lot of capable roles, and
there are actually lights that can't scout at all, namely the
tier 7 aufklarung panther. that thing's bigger than most mediums
and its camo is so bad that it simply plays better as a sniper
because it gets spotted very easily due to higher spotting
ranges on high tier tanks.
Second, all tanks can perform various roles. The trick is simply
to know what your tank is capable of and deciding what best to
do in a situation. A medium don't just flank and snipe, it can
scout and even tank shots if it has very good armour and is top
tier within a game. A light should not scout so aggressively
till it dies, simply because a dead scout is completely useless.
Lights which survive into the late game can be a great
distraction, for running down low health/slow targets or going
back to defend base. Even as a heavy, you can gain information
simply by poking your head out of cover and back in quickly and
let sixth sense do the work. if you're ballsy enough and know
what you're doing, you can even expose enemies by sitting there
and baiting them to shoot you. In a nutshell, don't restrict
yourself to a narrow-minded playstyle, be flexible, be like the
water and the wind, and you shall conquer the lands and
mountains.
Third, read guides and watch youtube reviews on the tanks you're
aiming for. BUT, remember to take a look at the date, most
guides are awfully old and thus misguided. And some guides can
be rather subjective as well. An example would be to compare
QuickyBaby and Jingles on their review for the tier 9 chinese
medium WZ-120. Jingles hates it because it has almost no gun
depression since he's used to american tanks while QuickyBaby
loves it. Personally, I love this tank's big bada boom very
much.
Fourth, know your weakspots. Most weakspots are common for all
tanks: lower frontal glacis, machine gun ports, commander
cupolas, rear hull etc. Different nations also have unique
weakspots. American heavies have weak hull armour, and their
side armour is simply horrendous. German heavies have big lower
glacis to be shot, and almost all german tanks have crappy
turret armour. Tanks of the IS series loses their effective
armour when angled. And other than weakspots, it's also an
advantage to try and gun for critical modules. Shoot where
engines are to try and make them slow or cause fire, shoot the
side of turrets to cause annoying damages (ammo rack, gunner,
gun, all the important stuff are in the turret)
Fifth, LOOK AT TEH MAP!!!!! Although this is more of a basic
habit to pick up in any games that has minimaps. Sometimes you
can turn a losing game to winning simply by looking at the map
and reacting to it. When you're top tiered, you're basically in
charge of how the match goes, paying attention to the map and
realising that the high tier enemies lemminged one way gives you
the opportunity to steamroll your flank till you reach the enemy
base, kill the scumbag SPGs and even backstab the enemies. The
minimap can also be used to check if anyone is ninja-ing up on
you while you're in sniper/spg mode.
Sixth, use your team mates, access your team mates' performance
and use them. Help team mates that are good so they survive and
help you win the game while making use of team mates who don't
perform well. Sometimes you encounter a situation where there's
a tank with a very big gun of pain but low health on the other
side of rock you're taking cover with. Best thing to do is
simply wait for someone else to finish the job or take the shot
=D. If you have bad armour and desperately need cover, you can
even hide behind heavily armoured team mates, using them as
cover while you poke your head to take potshots whenever the
time is right. For example, there was a game where i developed a
symbiosis with a T-95 in my E 50. I pushed his big slow butt and
make sure he doesn't get flanked, in return i use him to hide my
lower glacis along with all kinds of goodies we provide each
other. Both of us basically pushed a flank this way and
decimated half the enemy team for underestimating the power of
love. When you pay attention to how players play, you'll even
notice that they're practically campers and won't push even with
superior number and you should go and help the other flank with
less allies instead.
Seventh, know your priorities. Always prioritise the most
dangerous targets which you can damage reasonably rather than
those in front of you (eg. ISU-152 and WT auf 4 E 100). When you
can kill, kill, one less gun is a step to victory. However when
there's a whole bunch of team mates gunning for a near dead
target, just ignore and save your shot for another who's visible
as well. When you're gang banged, stay calm, do not get
distracted by fast targets carouseling you because you're
wasting your time, instead just shoot the slower moving ones. As
a person who plays lights rather frequently, i find it funny
that people just love to shoot at lights to the extent they just
ignore anyone else shooting at them.
Eighth, understand how the game works. Spotting/camo mechanics,
damages, shell penetrations etc. Wargaming have made video
guides on some of the mechanics, however they do not reveal
everything. Anyone who really wants to learn them should ask the
more experience clan members or me, but if demand is high i may
try and make a guide.
Ninth, mods are extremely helpful. Personally i was traumatised
by mods in other games giving me all kinds of problem whenever
there's a patch and only uses the historical gun sound mod, but
there are mods like xvm, locastan's map tracker, mod which lets
you know what kind of shell is hitting you (AP, HE, HESH, HEAT,
APCR) etc. The gun mod's useful in making the game sound more
like a war game and letting you gather info through sounds.
Basically you can know how many times an enemy auto-loader has
fired nearby but you're not looking at or who just fired. Also
WG actually supports mod usage, which is why mods are easier and
legal to use in WoT.
Lastly, check out this Tank Inspector software:
HTML http://tankinspector.sinaapp.com/
download it, register an email (no spams, i promise =D) and get
all the information you can never find on the official WoT
website. Armour, stats, this software has basically everything.
Remember to download the newest version everytime WoT gets
patched.
As one final note, i apologise for the wall of text. i tried,
but i tend to elaborate too much.

Very nice Dog. You sure know how to play.
Think we found a player that can provide tactics and help us all
learn when we get into Clan Wars ;D

Yeah, well I disagree with the use of a mod like that. Makes it
very unfair toward the enemy team plus you don't gain any skill.

some ppl juz need their training wheels, bad thing is you don't
gain ur sense of balance if you don't take them off.
the mod shows weak points but not how much pen is needed, that's
something gained only through experience. relative angling is
important as well, weak points when properly addressed may not
be the best places to shoot at, and the strongest part of the
tank may be the best place to shoot at given the right line of
fire.
