Rick and the flashbacks

Just before Rick chops off Jessie's arm to save Carl he has a
series of flashbacks involving her and I was just trying to
figure out why it was necessary at all.
Because for one, their relationship or lack thereof was piss
poorly done and really had no impact at all, so when Rick has
these flashbacks it just felt out of place and like they were
either trying to show the audience that Rick is no longer
lusting after her and finally back in the real world, or it was
an attempt to make us feel sorry for Rick having to make that
decision.
Either way it didn't help the episode at all.

I didn't like the flashbacks either.
I guess they represented Rick's hopes of starting over with
Jessie; which would be ironic because she "friend-zoned" him.
