I just realized that "Tell it to the Frogs" was not just the
first appearance of Daryl, but Carol 1st appeared here, too!

Yes and also her disgusting pig of a husband, Ed.
Thank god Shane beat the shit out of him.

There was no friendship between Shane and Ed, but much of that
beating was to burn out the anger Shane felt over Lori rejecting
       him.

Yes that is true, Shane's rejection definitely fueled some
anger. Back then Daryl didn't get involved in anything like
that, but I'd like to think that he would've beaten or killed Ed
himself now. Still I wonder how things would've been different
if Daryl had been the one to beat Ed instead?

During the first season, Daryl was the surly redneck loner, but
       I don't see him standing by while a man slaps a woman. I don't
see Merle standing by for it either.

I always thought he knew the abuse was going on? Also back then
both Daryl and Merle were planning on robbing the camp and
leaving as Merle mentioned in I Ain't a Judas.

Daryl may have seen bruises on Carol (Jackie called Ed on that)
but Ed was beating Carol out of sight of the group, not in front
of them. I believe if Daryl saw Ed hit Carol, he'd attack Ed
(like he tried when he argued with Shane over Sophia), and Merle
would pull Daryl aside and remind his little brother of their
       plan to rob the group.
I don't know how committed Daryl was to Merle's plan to rob the
group. He was gone on that squirrel hunt a long time. I think
Daryl was mostly weighing options instead of hunting for
       squirrel.

A year ago, I read a fanfic set before Rick joined the Atlanta
group. Everyone in camp is eating breakfast and Daryl notices
fresh bruises on Carol's arm, and he starts glaring at Ed.
Merle notices Daryl's behavior and whispers something like
"Forget it, little brother, it ain't your concern."
So I think Daryl and Merle's time in camp when something like
       that.

It sounds like an interesting fic, do you happen to remember
       where you found it?
And I could imagine Daryl and Merle having that kind of talk.

Unfortunately, I can't remember the story's name or where I read
       it.
