Here are 13 minutes of deleted scenes from the season 2 premiere
"What Lies Ahead." I think this footage emphasizes the
character development that was a hallmark of season 2.

I remember watching these deleted scenes and wondering why the
one where they return to Vatos was cut. I always thought that
scene made a nice addition and would've explained what happened
to those people instead of leaving it ambiguous as they did.

I like that its Daryl who notices the Vatos and senior citizens
were executed instead of Rick or Shane, who are police officers.
I would've liked if Daryl showed some regret after he snapped at
Sophia. Something like "What did I just do?" or "I didn't mean
to scare her."

Same. Daryl has always been a lot more observant than the others
to begin with and I think its something Carol has learned from
him too.

Andrew Lincoln is a great actor, but he sells gun recoil like a
kid playing Cowboys and Indians. ;D

He's said that western movies have been his inspiration for the
character, so that could explain it I guess. :P

Most fans believe the Governor, or Phillip, raided the senior
citizen home and executed everyone, but I don't believe that's
the case.
Phillip's daughter, Penny, was still alive at this point, and he
was likely attracting a group to him the same as Rick had. It
wasn't until Penny died, that Phillip began to descend into
madness and started to kill threats or the weak that he
encountered.
The actual killers could've have been anyone: a mob, a rival
gang, raiders; even renegade cops or army.

I too believe it was someone else besides the Governor, because
at that point lots of people would be going insane trying to
steal supplies and killing others to get them. Although we
probably have no idea what the Governor was like when he was
trying to keep Penny alive, but obviously nothing like he turned
out in the end.
