No Way Out: The Aftermath
By: Ickray_Imesgray Date: April 16, 2016, 6:30 am
---------------------------------------------------------
This takes place the next morning after the events of NWO and
before the two month time gap.
All was quiet in the early morning as the tired battered
survivors were gathered around the porch waiting for Rick to
give them the update on Carl. The streets of Alexandria were
littered with the bodies of walkers as well as the lake too.
Luckily enough there weren't nearly as many casualties, but
Carol knew Sam had been one of them and nobody even had to tell
her. That child never stood a chance of survival in this world
and it was something Carol had been aware of, and also one of
many reasons why she kept him at a distance.
She just couldn't allow herself to get close to another child.
Not after what happened with Lizzie and Mika. Still no one else
had known except Tyreese but he was long gone, and even though
Carol hadn't told Daryl the details, he still had an idea of
just how bad it must have been for her. For the moment Carol
could see Daryl sitting inside the infirmary shirtless with
bandages over the large wound on his back. They looked at one
another thankful the other had survived but it was nothing but a
silent exchange. In fact they hadn't talked much since their
arrival at Alexandria.
Aaron hugged Eric and complimented him for being able to fight
the walkers in his cast followed by a lighthearted laugh. Morgan
stood in silence looking at Carol wondering if she was planning
on telling Rick and the others what he had done by keeping that
wolf locked up. Carol could feel his eyes on her but she refused
to look at him. In fact for the moment she just wanted to forget
about everything.
"Carl is gonna be fine," Rick suddenly announced as he walked
out on the porch. "He squeezed my hand, I felt it." Rick smiled
as tears ran down his face.
Carol's eyes started to water as well as she smiled in relief,
thankful that Carl made it.
Michonne stood by Rick's side carrying Judith and placed a hand
on his shoulder smiling through her tears too.
"He's just going need lots of rest," Rick said. "But in the
meantime we need to clean this place up and fix the walls. We'll
rebuild them, reinforce them somehow. Just give me time to come
up with a solution. And I know you're all very tired right now
but we need to close that gap before anymore walkers make it
inside. We have to do it now, can't wait."
"Yes sir," Abe nodded in agreement. "We'll get right to it."
"I also want to thank all of you for what you did. This place is
still standing because of you, because you all worked together
and fought to keep it standing. And I see now that we're capable
of so much more but we can only do it together." Rick looked at
Morgan. "But we have to be on the same page too."
Morgan looked away now feeling the guilt as it suddenly hit him
hard, feeling as though he'd already let Rick down for what he
had done.
"First we'll fix that gap in the wall and then all of you can
rest a while before we clean up the streets," Rick explained.
"It's going to take a few days at least to get rid of all these
bodies."
"And how are we going to dispose of them?" Aaron asked.
"We'll burn them," Rick answered. "Outside the walls."

After the wall had been repaired Abe, Aaron, Sasha, Rosita,
Tobin, Daryl, Morgan, Carol, Michonne, and Rick were carrying
the bodies of the walkers outside the walls of Alexandria and
dumping them into large piles which Daryl set afire.
He stepped back while smoking a cigarette watching as the bodies
burned to a crisp, thinking back to his recent encounter with
that gang of bikers who tried to kill him, Abe, and Sasha. He
hadn't said a word about it to Rick yet but figured now wasn't
the time since Carl was badly injured and bedridden for the
moment.
But Daryl had no doubt in his mind that Carl would pull through
again. After all he was a tough kid even after everything he had
been through, but at the moment Daryl could see the worry in
Rick's eyes as he stood beside him watching the walkers burn.
"Sorry about Carl," Daryl suddenly said while puffing on his
cigarette. "I think he's gonna be just fine though. He'll bounce
back again. He's a tough son of a bitch."
"Yeah," Rick nodded with uncertainty. "He will."
Meanwhile Abe was humming to himself as he suddenly came across
a pile of walkers Michonne had taken out and what appeared to be
the remains of Ron who'd been completely torn to pieces. Abe
also noticed the gun laying next to Ron's body and knelt down to
pick it up.
Then out of the corner of his eye he noticed movement coming
from beneath one of the piles of walkers to his right followed
by the sounds of muffled hissing. He quickly pulled out his
knife and began throwing the walker bodies aside one by one
until he was staring into the cold lifeless eyes of Jessie who
was now a walker.
She hissed and growled trying to grab at him with a stump of an
arm as she lay there with her insides torn out and strewn about.
Abe looked over his shoulder and noticed Rick walking back
inside the gates so he quickly reached down with his knife
stabbing her right in the head and the proceeded to throw one of
the other walker bodies over her so Rick couldn't see.
"How're things coming along?" Rick asked him.
"Right as rain," Abe answered. "Just taking care of this here
pile as you can see.
Then Rick looked down and realized one of the bodies under the
pile was Jessie.
"She wouldn't let go of Sam's hand," Rick explained. "The
walkers had him but she just stood there and wouldn't let go.
Then the walkers got her and she wouldn't let go of Carl's hand
either."
"Say no more," Abe replied. "You did what you had to do."
There were tears in Rick's eyes now but he quickly wiped them
away. "Ron tried to shoot me and Michonne stopped him, but it
was too late, the gun had gone off and it hit Carl right in the
eye. Carl looked at me and then he just fell to the ground. I
was so scared I was going to lose him, my mind was
just---racing. I couldn't think, I just had to get him to the
infirmary."
Abe looked at Rick with a grave expression. "Your boy is going
to make it just fine, Rick. You saved him."
"No, Denise saved him," Rick replied.
Abe chuckled lightly. "But you're the one who got him there."

Rick appreciated Abe's attempt at trying to cheer him up but he
just couldn't bring himself to smile. Deep inside he was scared
to death of what life would be like for Carl when he awoke from
his coma. Would Carl still be the same or would Rick have to
make a difficult decision and put him down?
"I'm gonna check on him now," Rick mentioned as Abe nodded in
return and then proceeded to lift and carry the walkers over to
the truck Sasha had just drove in.
"Figured this would speed the process along," she said squinting
at Abe as the sun's rays burned into her eyes.
Meanwhile Maggie was holding and playing with Judith in their
house when Glenn walked down the stairs with his hair wet
wearing some fresh clothes.
"You enjoy your shower?" Maggie smiled at him.
"Needed it so bad," Glenn replied smiling back at her. "Where's
Enid?"
"Don't know," Maggie answered. "She was here a while ago, must
have left."
"Did you ask her yet?" Glenn mentioned.
Maggie shook her head. "Not yet, I wanted to wait for you. I
thought maybe it would be better if we both asked."
"Well in that case I guess we wait till we find her," Glenn
responded running his fingers through his short black hair. "I'm
going back out to help Rick and the others clean up. We're also
getting a bit short on food so we're going to need to go out on
a supply run soon."
Maggie looked worried now. "Are you going to go?"
"Yes," Glenn answered. "I have to, Maggie. For you and the
baby."
Maggie shook her head. "No you don't, Glenn. I already thought I
lost you before, I don't wanna feel that way again."
Glenn placed his hands on her shoulders and looked deep into her
eyes. "You won't. That's not going to happen again."
Judith suddenly let out a little cheerful squeal and they both
laughed.
"You promise?" Maggie asked.
"I promise," Glenn replied as he kissed her and then headed
outside.
Rick sat at Carl's beside watching as his son slept, wondering
what he must be dreaming about at this moment when Denise
suddenly walked in.
"I changed his bandages earlier," she said. "Cleaned up the
wound a bit too so there's no chance of it becoming infected."
"Thank you," Rick replied. "I can't tell you how much that means
to me. I owe you a lot, Denise."
Rick held Carl's hand again waiting for Carl to give him another
sign that he would be alright but Rick felt nothing.
"I feel like this is all my fault," Rick said somberly. "I feel
like I failed to protect you."

As Glenn walked down the street he spotted Abe who was still
piling the walker bodies into the bed of truck until he felt
they had a heavy enough load for now.
"Alright, this one's good to go!" Abe called over to Sasha who
was sitting in the driver's seat as he slapped the side of the
truck.
Sasha started up the engine and put the truck in drive as she
began pulling out and heading out the gates where Daryl and
Aaron were waiting beside an already burning pile.
"I came to help." Glenn suddenly spoke up as Abe turned around
and greeted him with a big friendly grin.
"You get all cleaned up just so you can get your ass dirty
again?" Abe teased him.
Glenn chuckled lightly. "Yeah well, you weren't the one hiding
under a dumpster all night." Then he looked down and recognized
the disfigured face of Jessie among one of the walker piles.
"We're not going to burn her too are we?"
"Nah," Abe replied. "We're going to bury her and her boys. As a
matter of fact Morgan and Father Gabriel are already digging the
graves right now."
Glenn gave a nod in response and then he spotted what was left
of Sam along with a visible stab wound in his head.
"We should probably move them now," he suggested. "At least
before Carol sees him. I know she liked that kid and he liked
her."
"Yeah," Abe sighed. "It's a damn shame."
Meanwhile Sasha, Daryl, and Aaron were unloading the walker
bodies from the truck bed dropping them on the ground to form
another pile while the other ones continued to burn filling the
air with smoke and the scent of charred flesh. Sasha covered her
nose and mouth with the sleeve of her jacket and coughed.
"You alright?" Daryl asked with concern.
"I'm fine," she answered. "Let's just finish this so we can take
a break."
"Sounds good to me," Aaron replied with a soft smile.
But then they suddenly heard the sounds of approaching walkers
as they snarled and growled drawn to the fires.
Daryl unsheathed his knife and readied himself to take them out
but much to his surprise they ended up walking right into the
fires where they tripped and fell right into the pile with the
rest of the corpses. Daryl couldn't believe it and neither could
Aaron.
"It's like they didn't even notice us," Aaron said.
"Probably because we're still covered in walker guts," Sasha
pointed out. "It masks our smell isn't that right?" She looked
at Daryl who was putting his knife away again.
"Yeah it does," he answered gruffly as he watched the struggling
walkers burn away with the rest.

A few hours later after everyone had eaten some lunch Michonne
noticed that Rick was no where to be seen and decided to check
the infirmary to see if he was still sitting at Carl's bedside
and sure enough he was.
He sat hunched over with his head down and his eyes closed and
didn't even flinch when she walked into the room.
"You missed lunch," she said. "Carol made a nice casserole and
everybody dug in, but there's leftovers in case you get hungry
later on."
"I'm not hungry," Rick replied sullenly.
Michonne felt a little doleful herself as she looked over at
Carl seeing the bandages over his right eye and remembering the
events of last night. She had killed Ron before he could shoot
Rick but still the gun had gone off and somehow Carl ended up in
its line of fire. But just like Rick she too had been afraid of
losing Carl but after getting him to the infirmary and seeing
that Denise was able to save his life after all, Michonne was
hopeful he'd make a strong recovery.
"I'm just waiting for him to wake up," Rick said. "I just want
my son to wake up." Rick reached out and touched Carl's face.
Michonne sighed. "He will, Rick. But it's going to take a while.
At least we got him here when we did. But now? You have to be
strong and have a little faith, cause right now I'm not seeing
that from you at all. What about what you said earlier? About
how we're capable of so much more but we can only do it
together? Rick, right now we're not together. Because the rest
of us have faith that Carl will pull through but it seems you're
the only one who doesn't here."
"You're right," Rick admitted as he looked up at her. "I guess
faith is just a lot harder to have these days. I'm just afraid
of the condition he's going to be in when he wakes up. That's
the part that scares me the most. I want to have faith, I do,
but I don't, I don't know how."
"You do know how, Rick," Michonne replied sternly. "And right
now the people of Alexandria need you. We can't rebuild this
place on our own, not without you. So please, Rick, try to have
faith like the rest of us. Don't think too much about the
future, think about now and what needs to be done here."
Meanwhile Aaron, Eric, Tobin, Glenn, Maggie, Sasha, Rosita, Abe,
and a few other Alexandrians were gathered around the graves of
Jessie, Ron, and Sam as Father Gabriel said a few words before
they were laid to rest.
Overhead the sky turned gray as rain clouds began to move in
followed by a light drizzle. Carol stood far away in the
background watching the funeral asking herself why she wasn't
standing there with the others, only she knew the answer to
that. She didn't want to feel Sam's loss or anything for that
matter. She just wanted to forget it all and move on to whatever
life she would have in this community.
Still the streets weren't completely cleared and there was a lot
more cleanup to do before they would be. By now most of the
walker piles outside the walls were burnt up pretty good now and
Daryl was busy breaking up the ashes with a shovel when he
spotted Carol heading in his direction. He looked up as the
light drizzle soon turned into a light rain which came pattering
down rinsing the dried blood and ash off his arms.
"It's coming down hard now," Daryl commented as Carol stopped
just a few feet away from him.
"I know," Carol replied. "It's nice."
"Damn I'm getting soaked," Daryl griped. "We should probably
head inside now before it gets worse."
"Where's your crossbow?" Carol asked.
Daryl huffed. "Ran into some asshole in the woods after leading
those walkers away. He stole my crossbow and my bike. Pissed me
off. If I ever see that son of a bitch again I'm gonna kill him.
Hey how you holdin up lately? I'm sorry about what happened to
Sam. He was a good kid."
"I'm fine," Carol lied. "Just tired that's all."
"Yeah so am I," Daryl replied even though he could see right
through her. He knew she was just as upset over Sam but would
never admit to it, not to herself and especially not to him even
though they were close.
"Hey if you ever wanna talk, I'm here," Daryl said.
"Thank you," Carol replied wearily. "But for right now I'd just
like to go home and get some rest. You should too. You've been
out here all day working."
Daryl nodded.
"I'll talk to you later," Carol said before turning around and
heading back inside the gates.

Pretty good story so far, Ricky.
First, I like that Daryl and Carol are talking here instead of
acting like total strangers like they did in season 6.
I liked the talk Michonne gave Rick. She's right that the group
doesn't only need to have hope, they need to see Rick with hope.
It's good that Abraham put down Jessie before Rick saw her, but
I can't remember if Abraham knew those two were an item.
My one complaint is that Abraham doesn't sound like Abraham, but
admittedly, he's tough character to write.

Thanks for the honest review, I agree Abe is a difficult
character to write. And I do believe everyone saw that Rick
liked Jessie, because he sure didn't hide it. I was also
following the comic after NWO when Abe does put down Jessie. But
changed it up a bit and made it to where Rick does see her but
he isn't too distraught.
And it was important for Carol and Daryl to have some
communication. I just couldn't see them not talking at all after
that. But obviously Carol is trying to distance herself at this
point and refusing to feel Sam's loss.
I'm also trying to do more of a build up on the Richonne
relationship as well, cause in "The Next World" they were more
like a family at the beginning before that romance became
official.

Re: No Way Out: The Aftermath
By: Ickray_Imesgray Date: April 21, 2016, 8:01 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
A few days had passed now and the streets of Alexandria were
completely clear of walkers now and the problem with the walls
had been solved thanks to Eugene's idea of packing dirt against
them. Carl was still not awake yet but after listening to
Michonne Rick realized just how much he needed to have faith and
also remain focused on what he needed to do next which was to go
out on a supply run.
Food was getting low and the gardens they'd planted weren't
growing fast enough to harvest anything and so they would need
to go out and find more food especially now that Maggie was
pregnant and would be eating for two.
She wasn't happy with the idea of Glenn going out again but she
knew Glenn was strong and decided she didn't have to worry
anymore. And just recently both Glenn and Maggie had asked Enid
to move in with them and surprisingly Enid agreed to it. She
liked Glenn a lot and was even beginning to warm up to Maggie
recently. They were a lot like her own parents had been, only
stronger.
Still Enid was a loner and liked wandering off by herself even
though it probably wasn't the best idea. There weren't half as
many walkers roaming the woods now, but Enid knew Glenn and
Maggie worried about her safety anyway, so she would try to
spend more time behind the walls than outside of them for the
time being.
For the moment Rick, Glenn, Daryl, Aaron, and Rosita were
getting ready to leave as Rick laid out a map that was marked
with places Eugene had been able to locate in a phone book where
there still might be supplies. Even the warehouse where Daryl
and Aaron had run into that walker trap set by the wolves was on
there but Daryl had Rick cross it off.
"There's another food pantry here," Rick pointed out on the map.
"We'll head there first and see if there's still anything left.
If not then we move on to the next location. Daryl, you and
Aaron will take the car and the rest of you will ride with me in
the truck. It's still early in the morning so we should arrive
there by noon at the latest. Any questions?"
"I have one," Spencer suddenly chimed in from behind them.
"What do you want, Spencer?" Rick asked as he turned around and
looked at him.
"I'd like to join you guys if you don't mind. I haven't been on
a supply run yet so I'd like to get some experience."
Rick couldn't help but remember the stunt Spencer had pulled
when he tried to make it across that rope and ended up danging
like a piece of fresh meat over the herd of walkers and falling
into them almost getting himself killed.
"No," Rick said with a harsh tone. "You're staying here."
"But I can do this, Rick," Spencer replied. "Please give me a
chance at least?"
Rick looked at Daryl who shook his head in disagreement.
"I'm sorry, Spencer," Rick said apologetically. "But I'm not
giving you another chance to do something stupid and get
yourself killed. Your mother wanted me to look after you, so
that's what I'm going to do, so you're gonna have to stay here."
"Fine," Spencer replied then walked away.
"Why don't you give him a chance?" Glenn asked Rick. "He's right
he needs the experience. All these people do. Don't you think
Deanna would want that too?"
Rick narrowed his eyes and tilt his head to the side.
"He does have a point, Rick," Rosita added. "Spencer was out
here with the rest of us fighting the walkers that night, so he
has experience."
Rick was frustrated now and he knew Daryl was very much on his
side about this, but still Glenn and Rosita were right as well.
"Fine, he can come," Rick sighed. "But we need to head out now,
so everyone into the truck. Spencer can ride with Daryl and
Aaron."
Daryl huffed and looked at Rick as though he were insane.

Pretty good, Ricky.
I love that Rick and Daryl are disagreeing, that's something
I've always wanted to see on the show.
Eugene is contributing to the group in ways Abraham and Rosita
likely won't appreciate. I mean, looking through a phone book
for supermarkets, anybody can do that, but it needs to be done.
Nice that Glenn is going on a supply run. He's the scavenger.
That's what he's supposed to do.
I like that Spencer is speaking up, although I'll bet he has
ulterior motives.

Re: No Way Out: The Aftermath

Abraham and Sasha stood at the gates armed with their rifles to
see Rick and the others off as they started to pull out. Abe
walked over to the driver's seat of the truck and asked Rick if
he was sure he didn't need him to come along too but Rick shook
his head.
"No," he said. "I need the rest of you here looking after the
place while we're gone. It shouldn't be too long, half a day at
the most."
Abe gave a nod in response. "Well be sure to watch your asses
out there." He looked at Glenn who sat in the passenger seat
while Rosita sat in the back.
"We will," Rick nodded back at Abe before he resumed pulling out
of the driveway with Daryl, Aaron, and Spencer following behind
in a white car.
Daryl wasn't the least bit happy about having Spencer come
along, but he was even more pissed that Spencer had to ride with
him. Even Aaron could tell Daryl was mad about the whole thing
as he sat in the passenger side of the car not saying a single
word while Spencer sat in the back looking out the window
staring at the surrounding trees as if waiting to see something
come out of them.
He hadn't spoke a word about it to anyone but the night after
the walker massacre he went in search of his mother and found
her as a walker in the Andserson house. But sadly he didn't have
it in him to put her down and neither did he want anyone else to
do it either so he waited one night till everyone had gone to
sleep to sneak her outside the gates and release her into the
woods.
Spencer knew it was stupid of him and there was also a chance
Deanna could end up killing someone but she was still his mother
and the last of his remaining family. He felt like a fool and a
coward but he didn't know how else to handle it. He also knew
that Rick would probably beat him senseless for what he did so
it was best that he kept it to himself and better to wait until
he feels he can finally put her down.
But Spencer's nervousness was showing through his body language
and Daryl seemed to be the first to pick up on it. Then again
Daryl never liked him to begin with which was why he never
bothered talking to him or even getting to know him. The kind of
vibe he got from Spencer was that of a traitor, someone just
waiting to stab one of them in the back when the opportunity
came.
