Father of Maggie and Beth and good friend to Rick and the rest
       of the group.
Hershel was one of the best characters and had one of the
saddest deaths next to Lori Grimes.
In the beginning he saved Carl's life after Otis shot him by
accident, and allowed Rick and his people to live on his farm.
He was delusional in the beginning, believing that the dead were
just sick people who could be saved and kept them in his barn
including his own wife and other members of his family.
After his farm became overrun with walkers and he was forced to
leave it behind, he found a new home at the prison but it almost
cost him his life after he got bit on the leg by a walker.
Fortunate for him Rick was able to amputate that leg which saved
his life. It wasn't until the second and final war with the
Governor that Hershel finally died and horrible at that. The
Governor could see that Hershel was the moral compass of Rick's
group and decided to behead him in front of everyone with
       Michonne's sword.
Hershel was also a great hero and risked his life to save the
sick people in the prison after the flu outbreak. He also gave
Glenn permission to take Maggie's hand in marriage and as a gift
he have him an old pocket watch which Glenn still has with him.
