       The Governor burning down Woodbury

I always loved that flashback scene of the Governor returning to
Woodbury only to light it all on fire and allow the walkers to
overrun it. His people were gone so there was nothing there for
       him to return to.
He even looked completely defeated by the time he met Lilly,
Tara, Megan, and their father. I wonder if he would've just
killed himself eventually if he didn't find anyone else.
Martinez and Shumpert ditched his psycho ass as fast as they
       could.

I think the Governor burned down Woodbury because he felt his
people betrayed him. In contrast, Adolf Hitler, in the final
days of the Third Reich, went on harangues saying the German
people had betrayed him and that they all deserved to die.
I think the Governor would've just kept on walking through the
wastelands of the U.S. had he not met Lilly and her family. I
think he saw them as a second chance and he made a serious
effort to start again. Unfortunately, his insanity had a strong
hold on him and he led them to their deaths.
