Aside from the debut of the Governor, this episode marked the
return of Merle Dixon, the bad guy you loved to hate. Talk
about Merle's misadventures in season 3 here.

Merle was definitely that character you loved to hate. He was
never the leader type except when it came to Daryl since his
little brother used to follow him. But Merle ended up being the
Governor's bitch more or less only to betray him in the end in
order to save Daryl.
The Suicide King was a great episode.

I think Merle stayed in Woodbury out of gratitude to the
Governor for saving him after he got out of Atlanta, and the
townspeople appreciating his efforts to keep them safe.
Watching Merle with the Governor, I got the impression he
disagreed or was uncomfortable with most of the Governor's
orders, but was too loyal or afraid to protest.
