Horror of Horrors
By: Chad Brown Date: May 30, 2018, 12:45 am
---------------------------------------------------------
Last night I discovered that the left earpiece of my Rift HMD is
completely non-functional. The right earpiece is functioning
sporadically and will function when I play with the headband and
get it set properly. This is a significant problem as I have
become accustomed to racing in 3D and the thought of racing on a
flat screen is almost obscene at this point. Unfortunately I
will likely have to send the HMD into Oculus for repair or
replacement. I am currently working with their Support
department to resolve the problem but I will likely be without
my favorite piece of hardware EVER for a little while. Until the
unit is sent off I will probably have to use headphones to race.
Not ideal but racing on a flat screen is not an option anymore.

Yup, Now the Rift is not turning on the display. I tried to run
on my 22" 1080P Screen. I HAD 3 of these screens , but after
getting the rift I gave one to my Nephew for his gaming
computer. The FOV was completely fucked up. I cant see my
corners the same way I can in VR. I am irritated as Fuck.

Wow sorry to hear that Chad. I know what you mean. I doubt I
would be able to go back to my single 2D monitor setup now.
Definitely spoiled by the Rift. It's not just looking out of the
side windows either. It's "feeling" the braking zones and where
you are on the track.
The things we do to make our hardware work... many years ago I
had my gaming headphones fail. The only other headphones I had
were connected inside my snowboard helmet. So I did a raid in
World of Warcraft sitting there with a snowboard helmet on!
Hope the Oculus folks can get you back up and running.
Maybe a quick fix would be to get a cheap pair of earbuds and
run the wiring along the Rift cable to an audio port on your PC?

That might be an option. I recall having some very long audio
cables that might do the trick... but that doesnt help my Rift
not turning the display on.
Interesting though that the Oculus software thinks the rift is
working fine and only one earpiece works. Makes me think that
there is a broken solder joint in the headset or something.

Maybe you audio problem are separate from your video problem?
Just a coincidence?
I'm at work so I can't look at mine but can you unplug the ear
piece and switch it to the other side? If so does it work
Not sure if they symmetrical or not?
I had the problem with the head set not turning on a couple of
months ago. Not the open beta thing but it was something else
but I can't remember what I did to fix it, sorry. Seems like I
googled it and found the solution. I'll look in my history and
see if it is still there.
Hope you get it resovled

Totally oblivious to what you guys are talking about but that's
not why I'm doing this message. Just want to say that it's
really cool that there is so much help from everyone when we
have problems. I greatly appreciate it!

I switched the earpieces to the other sides. They are intended
to be side specific but can connect to the other side's
connection. The same side is having audio problems. regardless
of which earpiece is connected.
I have done a lot of things to try and troubleshoot the issue.
In the end I suspect I am going to have to send the headset in
for repair. This sucks.

Hey Chad,
where you at on this?
Is it getting fixed, is it gonna take long, are you taking a
sabbatical from racing, should we start a Chad Brown Legal
Defense Fund to get you a new one?
Inquiring minds want to know!

LOL. I have sent back my headset to Oculus. They should have
received it today. They will look at it and send me back a
replacement. It sounds like I should expect them to take 3-4
days to inspect and decide on the best replacement/repair
option. I expect to have the replacement by next week sometime.
I should be taking part in the race tonight (as long as we have
attendees). I raced on Sunday and had some troubles moving back
to 2D but it will be temporary.
On another note, this has provided me with the perfect
motivation to complete an area of my basement which will offer
more VR room for movement. I had to tear out a bar that was not
being used to do it but it will be completely worth the effort I
think. I still have to finish the floor and wall where the bar
was attached but I am hoping to do that over the next few days.
I will then begin the migration of the Oculus sensors and
finally the Racing rig to the new area.

I received a reply today from Oculus that I will be receiving a
replacement Rift. I dont know if it has shipped yet or not but I
at least know that a new (refurbished) one is coming back to me.
Also my wife told me tonight that she is buying me a 3rd Rift
sensor for my setup. I am excited as this will allow me to have
full 360 degree tracking with no loss of signal.
I am hoping to pick up the items needed to finish the update to
my Play Space for my rift before the new HMD arrives. I will
likely only get up the two sensors I currently have. I have not
yet received the 3rd one but have been planning out my new VR
room for a bit now and am excited to get it built out.
This makes me think of how excited i was to build my Racing Rig.
Sim racing was new and exciting and I had a desire to immerse
myself in it. The Rig was a project I really and truly enjoyed
making. This new VR space is the same. I absolutely love the VR
games I have played and wish to experience them with more room
to walk around and explore.
The new space should be about 10 feet by 10 feet. This is
slightly bigger than Oculus recommends but with the third sensor
I should have a very robust setup that will not lose tracking in
almost any situation. (Never say Never). For those of you who
have VR setups let me know what kind of experience You have had.
