2k Skins for race day
By: Simon J Date: January 9, 2018, 11:45 am
---------------------------------------------------------
I think it would be better if we all use 2k skins 2048x2048 as
they are 4mb in size and 4k skins are 16mb 4096x4096 4 times
bigger
It would help people with not so good connections 28 drivers x
4mb is only 112mb as apposed to 28 drivers at 16mb 448mb to
download
Thoughts ? ;D

Supported and recommended. We should do everything that helps
and imo 4k skins aren't necessary.

In the CMS league I was in before I rejoined here the server did
not allow autmatic skin upload.
Instead a skin pack was released, as every account for rF2 has a
"unique id". With this in the filename the skin will appear for
the right car.
I will try to get the instructions for that, but have to search
for it before.
With this the server is not that under extreme pressure with
many cars.
3. Once you have finished painting your individual DDS
files, and naming them as described above, you must package all
of the individual parts into a .MAS file. You do this using the
MAS2 utility located in rFactor 2/support/tools/
A. Open up your MAS2 editor
B. AT the top left click "add files"
C. Navigate to the location of your DDS files and highlight them
all.
D. AT the bottom right corner click "open".
E. Now click the button at the top left that says "create mas
file".
F.. When the save window comes up name your mas file with the
SAME NAMING CONVENTION described above. Using the above example
my mas file would be named "alt26.mas". This will be the car you
select when your racing.
4. Now, copy your mas file to a temp folder.
5. Go to your player.json and find your "unique ID" number and
carefully jot it down.
6. Go back to the temp folder where you stored the copy of your
mas file.
7. Rename your mas file by simply adding to the beginning of it:
_uniqueID_
So, using my previous example your renamed MAS file should look
like: "_uniqueid_al177.mas". Note some unique ID's include a -
before the number and some do not.
8. Now this file (the one with the uniqueID appended to it) is
the one you need to submit to this thread.
IMPORTANT:
UPDATE: "Unique ID's
As many of us do fresh installs each season and many of us have
recently had to switch to Steam from NON steam installs of rF2
please be aware that when you do a fresh install or switch to a
steam install, by default it will give you a unique ID of "42".
It is very important that the unique ID in your player.json
matches the unique ID of your skin file name. So, for instance
if your planning to use your skin from last season but you have
done a new install or moved to steam you need to either edit
your skin file name to match your unique ID of your player.json,
OR edit your player.json to match the unique ID of your skin
file name. The 2 must match. Before submitting a skin PLEASE
check your player.json to ensure that the unique ID matches that
of your skin file.
9. How to package your submission:
A. Take your properly named MAS file and place it in the
appropriate folder. EXAMPLE: C:\Program Files
(x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\rFactor
2\UserData\player\Settings\ER_ESrF2\V8VANTAGE_1540
99/_-25212_alt177
I'd also be all for a skin pack. If we were going to go that
route I don't think the uniqueID thing would be necessary. We'd
just need everyone to submit a skin, then we'd make a matching
.veh file and pack it all up as an update. The way S397 does it.
Then everyone would just need to DL the pack and pick their car.

We would need member activity to make the skinpack. Lets see if
we can make it.
But just to be sure, I ask everyone to check their skin file
size. If it's 16mb or more you have 4k skin. 2k is around 4mb.
Please switch to 2k skin if possible.

I'm sorry to ask but I don't know how to make 2k skins.

yeah me either, can't do any skins for that matter. Relying on
the skilled members of ours :)
I'm asking around what we should do, but for the time being you
don't need to do anything. It just came up when Simon mentioned
that it could be better to use 2k skins. But it looks like
Bentley for example has 4k defaults skins or at least they are
16mb in size which according to Simon refers to being 4k. We
will figure this out.
