What to do when you are about to be lapped?

I saw an interesting post on another forum on this topic and as
we are about to start a new season thought it might be useful
for us too.
What to do when you are about to be lapped?
The key thing to incident-free lapping is predictability and the
best way to be predictable is to drive as you would normally, so
stay on the racing line and let the faster guy behind you make
it clear where he wants to make the overtake.
Generally the easiest place to overtake, so you both lose the
least time, is braking into a corner. Let the guy behind take
the inside line and either let of the gas a little earlier than
normal or brake slightly earlier. This way you can still take
the corner as you normally would and you will be out of each
others way for the all important corner exit acceleration.
Obviously there are always situations that may vary, for example
if you are so far out of the race anyway you might just move
over and slow down, or if you are going through a very twisty
section of track, it is still up to the guy behind to make a
safe pass, so just be predictable.
For the car doing the lapping, sometime you just have to be a
little patient, pick the right spot and make your intentions
clear, even give a flash of the lights to let the guy know
you're there.
This is just my hopefully helpful suggestions, but feel free to
comment as this is all always about fun, clean, quality racing.
League rule 9 states:
9. Respect the in-game rules, all flags should be respected, and
followed. There are no blue flag rules here. Blue flags shall
be shown but not penalized. If you are being overtaken and are
off pace and not in a battle of your own, slow down and let the
other car pass. If you are in a battle it is up to the other
car to make a SAFE, EFFECTIVE, and DECISIVE pass.

I began simracing with aliens in GPL so the first thing I
learned was how to be a good backmarker and then racecraft. If a
driver finds him or herself 1.5s off the pace in fast
open-wheelers, or 2s or more in GTs or slower open-wheelers,
then that person should know to regularly be checking their
mirrors.
If they're in the middle of a pack where they know they "don't
belong," they first of all shouldn't overdo their driving. Once
they find themselves further into the race or have had a
skirmish with the grass or walls and lost a lot of time early
on, they should keep an eye out on the little timing screen that
shows leader lap or gap, and check mirrors every single
straight, and double check before getting close to their braking
points. Once a car is visible they should work out how quickly
that car has appeared because all it takes sometimes is one
chicane for that car to be all over their rears, or about to
pass.
When that is the case and the gap is maybe of 1s or just a bit
more, the best is to coast off the throttle and stick to your
line. Never ever brake. The lapping car will be far enough away
to notice the rate of approximation and just easily move over
and pass, without being on the dirty line for braking or having
to fight for a corner that is rightfully his. If you have keys
mapped, it's the perfect time to say "Pass right" or use your
microphone.
The more challenging a car is to handle, the worse it will be
when it comes to corners or twisty sections. Very often the
backmarker can lose control and have a twitch. Often times the
cornering speed difference and lines are so great, the lapping
car can find itself in trouble from simply getting too close but
instead of being able to drive, being forced to be in a position
of react first, drive second. And that leads to problems too. As
careful as a lapping driver may be, the situation may still
arise that the drivers will have issues due to sheer speed
differences - and they can be massive on corners.
A last bit of a note and tip I've always tried giving is, don't
go off the track. You can lose control and you lose even more
speed, and following cars may come close to you much sooner than
expected. Being on the outside of a corner, you can go very wide
and tip-toe back to the line or finish the corner once the cars
are through.

one of the key things of knowing where to let go someone is
knowing the track, learn the track. if its multiclass then do
laps in the other class track to see where they would struggle
trying an overtake, on some corner exits you can turn off the
racing line and lift a bit without you losing time, on others
you just have to hold your lines as predictable as posible and
let the faster guy do the tricky part, just whatever you do
avoid slowing too much in the middle of the track :)
also general awareness, is that guy behind me because he pitted
and was way ahead? dont fight him if you have to pit later too,
he is in another race.
am i losing too much time trying to fend off a guy thats 1.5s
faster? let him go, save tyres and trail him, maybe you can get
him later, if you're confident enough and the gap isnt big just
fight him.
blue flags? then same as multiclass, just dont fight it, be
predictable, dont brake hard and lift off the racing line on
safe straights.

Nice post :)
Got this one sussed managed to get in way of Julian allot when i
first started in BES series.
classic one i was trying to setup my pit stop and did not see
him till to late nearly ruined his and my race.
I felt really bad about it. So bit more nervous than others lol
my dash flashes blue and crew chief is there to keep an eye out
for me now :)
Generally pull over so they can pass. will do the pull to left
so they take inside line up to corner now :)
But hopefully i wont be lapped now ;D
