Steam

I purchased a life time subscription to RF2 a few weeks ago and
in the email from Tim @ ISI I was given links to move over to
Steam if I wanted to. I decided to wait until the current
series was over so I think I will do the switch here soon. Are
there any issues to look out for?
I always thought Steam was weird in that I needed to go through
one program to play another program but I'm old fashioned I
guess. But I have used it to play Elite Dangerous and a couple
of other games the last 10 -12 months.

Gerry just think of steam as the hub for a collection of games.
It's only a consolidated platform to manage everything.
What I was most sceptical of, and still partially am, is the
whole Digital Rights Management (DRM.) You don't really own
anything. There is no physical copy. You can't sell it later
when you're bored or done even though games cost the same
(initially.) I pretty much follow a rule of $5 or under because
I am cheap and can wait for that price point. I can buy the game
from multiple vendors giving me price options (check out
cheapshark) and activate it in steam.
Steam is excellent for keeping everything up to date. You can
pause updates, throttle download speeds, see who is online and
what game their in, chat, and so much more. It makes a lot of
sense when you dig in to it.

i have no issues with steam at all, i lost count of how many
games i own.
i even moved purchased games from one account to another with no
issues.
also the steam workshop for RF2 does wonders!

I honestly don't know why others have such a dislike for
Steam... it's fine. Updates are just there waiting for you, and
you also have the option to revert to a previous version.
Also... I git RF2 Lifetime on Steam for 40% off on a Steam
sale... freakin bargain. And honestly if we were to create a
Steam group, we wouldn't even need teamspeak because you can
start a group chat on steam. Great way to advertise the league
as well. The Assetto and Pcar fanboys are annoying as f**k
though on the discussion boards.

Thanks for the advice fellas.
I made the switch just few moments ago.
When I click on the steam icon in the little box in the task
bar, lower right corner, forget what the heck it's called...
quick launch or something and click on RF2 in the list I get a
prompt to download RF2? I already have it and I can still use
the RF2 launcher as before.
Do I need to link my install of RF2 to steam or something? I'll
see how my Google Fu is on the subject and see what I'm missing
here too.

OK my Google Fu was powerfull. I found this thread on the ISI

Didn't know I needed to do all this, look at post 4 and 5, my
little 256 Gb SSD is not going to like it, gonna be close till I
get the packages and what ever moved over and I can delete my
old RF2 install.

Now I can get to the list of servers but I can't join the VRC
servers either because I get "invalid password" error or
"package not available". Depending on which VRC server I'm
trying to join.
What a CLUSTER BANG!!

OK, I think I am figuring it out. Took me a bit to find the
folders under the steamapps that correspond with the old RF2
install where I needs to copy stuff to... user data, packages
and plugins. Got a lot of packages to install and I thought
that steam workshop thing did that for me.

I am finally getting getmod to work... Maybe. I tihkn that is
part of the problem for you connecting to my servers. The
content has to be on your machine before trying to connect to
my server. Getmod should fix that, Hopefully.

I highly recommend going to the ISI's Steam Workshop and
unsubscribing from all the useless content you don't want. Once
that is done you can also delete it from your local drive. The
Race Events is annoying and a cheap way of getting the game to
provide a single-player experience, but it forces you to keep
all the content, so you must unsubscribe from it as well.

Yeah... i definitely need to do that. I didn't even know what
Race Events were. I have a SSD that i have rf2 installed on and
could use some extra space too.
Here is another reason to unsubscribe too.... Everytime i load
rf2 is says it is downloading 1 item...yet it NEVER finishes.
What it is apparently doing is searching for content I am
subscribed to that no longer exists. Annoying.

Thanks for the additional advice Guiga.
I go to the steam workshop for ISI and for RF2 and it looks like
I am not subscribed to anything... not sure, not really
experienced at navigating around steam.
I still don't think I like using Steam as front end for this
stuff, too much other crap to navigate around.
I kind of regret switching over now.
