Writing Contest-Judges' rubric example

The judges' rubric for the Royal Palm Literary Award:
1-Setting: How well does the setting fit with the story? How
well does it portray mood, time and place? How does it show
imagination?
2-Characters: How well rounded are the characters? Can
readers/viewers connect readily with them? Is the main character
strong and easy to identify with? How consistent is the
character's action with stated experience?
3-Plot: How clear is the plot? Is the main character’s
motivation sufficient to sustain the story? Does the plot follow
throughout the story?
4-Flow: How logical is the flow of the story? How appropriate is
the pacing? How plausible is the story?
5-Dialogue: How appropriate is each character’s dialogue to that
character? Does the dialogue balance well with the action? How
well does the dialogue move the story along?
6-Creativity: How creative/original is the story?
7-Mechanics: Is the manuscript easy to read, in the correct
format, and free of typing errors?
8-Genre: Was this manuscript submitted in the correct genre? If
not, what genre should have been used?
9-Overall Impression: Would you like to read more work from this
author?
