Ok...here is a ballistics chart displaying the .204, .223,
.22-250, and .243. All are shooting a 55gr. bullet except the
.204, which is shooting a 34gr. bullet. Bottom left you see
each caliber that color coordinates with the chart. The .243
holds up quiet nicely.

^ supports my point. 22-250 and 204 are too similar. .243 is
long range and the .223 would be a great lower cost short rang
round. If you are not shooting out at 500 the .243 is not
really anything new or better, if you are shooting out at 500,
240 WBY Mag and be done with it. Other than that, the .223 fits
best between the existing .17 and the 22-250. Fills the nitch.

The .223 does seem to be a good "brush" gun....inside 175
yards....plus the advantage of cheap factory ammo, although I
would roll my own whichever I choose.

Well...let's keep in mind that the .204 is shooting a 34gr.
bullet, while the .22-250 is shooting a 55gr. bullet. They are
comparable out to 200 yards...but after that...not so much. I
do agree that to fill the nitch...the .223 is the best choice,
but it too is comparable to the .22-250 the first 175 yards.
This is why it's so tuff of decision for me. I appreciate your
insight. Maybe the .243 is the best choice...but only for shots
out past 500 yards...which rarely happen.

Apples to apples , Oranges to Oranges.
You cant compare any of the above,Different gun all the way
round. You looking for a bigger gun get the 243. If you reload
you can match any of the 204,223,22/250 in every thing but
speed. You can almost match most factory 3006 loads for deer if
you want.A 204 if you want a smaller gun is almost a clone of
the 22/250 In fact there is Less wind drift and the drop is a
bit less, but you have to match grain for grain. You cant get a
70 gr 20 cal bullet. But there again if your looking to shoot a
70 gr go to a 243. The only other option to IMPROVE on a 22
caliber gun you have to go to a 220 swift or a 22/243. All that
said If I was to want to build my arsenal and not have any
repeats I'd do a 243... :D

I bought my grandson a Harrington-Richardson handi rifle 22"bull
barrel in the .204ruger when he was 9 years old. He's taken
several deer over the years with it and they dropped where they
were shot. Shooting Winchester 32gr ballistic silver tips zeroed
1.5in. high at 100yds, drops 2" at 200yds, 7"at 300yds, 16.5" at
400yds, and 36.6 at 500yds.
I've shot one yote with it(harrassing my turkeys) at 413yds. I
held right over his shoulder about chin high and spined him.
Never new what hit him. I watched the impact through the 3-9x40
Bushnell Trophy scope. It's about to get a scope upgrade. I've
shot a lot of different rifles and it's the flattest shooter
I've ever seen.
It's like corn bread or bisquits; what ever turns your crank.

You make a lot of good points. All of these calibers can do
what all the others can do at specific yardage. I owned a .243
years ago...loved the gun...sold it.....stupid. The only thing
about the .243, is on light end...bullet wise....is about the
same as the heavy end bullet wise of the .22-250. I appreciate
all the insight...helping me make a decision. When I step back
and look at it from all angles....maybe I don't need any of
them. That's about where I am at. Not a big enough difference
for varmint/predators, than what I have.

No doubt it's a great shooting little caliber. But, I can work
up some loads with 35gr. bullets that will accomplish the same
results with the .22-250. I guess I can load my own to
accomplish with the the .22-250 that all the other have to
offer..for the most part.

Precisely correct. You can reload just about any bullet weight
you want, but you'll be a while trying to beat what you're
already turning out with 50/55gr coming out of a 22-250 at
4000fps. A critter ain't gonna know the difference between 3700
and 4250fps. There is no better all around varmint gun than the
22-250. That's why sooooo many guys shoot them. But you can't
have too many guns. ;D

Well, I guess I will just keep my money in my pocket a little
while longer. I was all set on adding new caliber to the
family...but seems I was just wanting another gun rather than
needing another gun. Thanks everyone for all the valuable info.
I guess the ole .22-250 gonna get some extra time in the
filed.... :D :D
