NC Judge stops coyote night hunting
By: jonthepain Date: November 27, 2012, 6:58 pm
---------------------------------------------------------

from the AP Nov 21 2012:
MANTEO (AP) — Federal wildlife officials say a fourth
protected red wolf has been shot to death since North Carolina
adopted a new rule allowing coyotes to be hunted at night with
spotlights.
from WNCT News Nov 26 2012:
CHAPEL HILL, N.C.—After four endangered wolves were
killed, a North Carolina court today granted conservation
groups’ request to stop a temporary state rule that allows
spotlight hunting of coyotes at night in the five county area of
eastern North Carolina inhabited by the world’s only wild
population of about 100 red wolves. The Southern Environmental
Law Center filed the motion for preliminary injunction and a
request for expedited hearing in Wake County Superior Court on
behalf of the Red Wolf Coalition, Defenders of Wildlife, and the
Animal Welfare Institute.
What they are not saying is that officially, the US Fish &
Wildlife Service is not releasing the time of day of death of
these wolves. Not to the press, or to me, or to the NC Wildlife
Resources Commission. Unofficially, the NCPHA has learned from
a source inside the USFWS that NONE of these wolves has been
shot at night.
Our sources inside the NCWRC have stated that wolf mortality is
actually below that of previous years.
Also, according to the USFWS, the real problem that is
endangering the red wolf is the cross breeding of red wolves
with coyotes.
See the US Fish and Wildlife Service study
HTML http://library.fws.gov/Pubs4/endangered_red_wolves.pdf
Which states "This hybridization is generally accepted as the
final factor that resulted in the near extinction of the red
wolf."
So why is the AP and other media sources stating that these
wolves have been shot after the NCWRC has allowed night hunting
of coyotes?
And why are these environmental groups suing the NCWRC to stop
increased opportunities to take coyotes, (allowing night
hunting,) when it's the presence of coyotes, and not night
hunting, that is endangering the native red wolf population?

If banning night hunting of coyote protects the wolves until
they have a chance to thrive, I am all for it.
Unfortunately....the thugs who killed the wolves probably won't
stop. Interesting article.

If the wolves were killed during the day, then at some point
someone will start poaching at night. I am on board with it. It
takes only one apple to spoil the bushel. For the sake of
fairness, Night hunting should be ban in the counties of their
habitat, not the entire state. As their population grows their
range will grow.
Here in VA, you can hunt certain game west of Interstate 95 and
not be permitted to hunt the same to the east.

Do whatever is best for all wildlife. We need to preserve for
future generations to enjoy.

You all are missing the point.
The point is that it's hybridization with coyotes that is
threatening the red wolf population, not night hunting coyotes.
Increased take of coyotes helps the red wolf population,
reducing the frequency of hybridization. Coyotes are much
easier to call in at night.
If these people were truly interested in helping to increase the
red wolf population, they would encourage the increased take of
coyotes, not sue to lessen it.

Red Wolves and Coyotes crossbreeding is called "Nature." Nature
will not cause the extinction of Red Wolves....."Man" will.
Both the coyote and the wolf have been around for centuries
without the help of man keeping them from crossbreeding.

no offense, yote, but let me point out a couple of things here.
coyotes are not native to this area, they have been introduced
by man. "hybridization with coyotes is the final factor that
resulted in the near extinction of the red wolf."
thus "Nature," as you put it, would not include coyotes in the
red wolf's range. So hybridization would not occur.
Since man has upset the balance of nature, it's our
responsibility to manage the red wolf such that it has a chance
to restore itself to it's native range.

No offense taken. I think we are actually in agreement on the
fact that man is at fault. Man introduced the coyote and wolf
so that crossbreeding occured. We are just taking two different
angles to arrive at the same conclusion.

No matter how it is taken, this is a fact: That hunting to
reduce coyote numbers only redistributes the coyote to other
areas~just like those south Texas hogs. The key is to be smart,
pick your shots, don't mistake a red wolf for a coyote, just as
i don't mistake a bald eagle for a wild turkey. peace and happy
hunting~~~~~
hunting to reduce coyote numbers only redistributes the
coyote to other areas
well that's interesting... in that case, the judge should have
restricted coyote hunting to only the counties that contain red
wolves, in order to force them into areas that do not contain
red wolves. and make it illegal to hunt coyotes in adjacent
counties to the areas where red wolves are established, so that
they are not redistributed into those areas.
all in order to reduce the percentage of hybridization, which is
the cause of the near extinction of the red wolf.
makes sense to me.
