This was a tough poll for me. I was torn between crow, coyotes,
       and chucks.

I'd cast my vote for the Ruffed Grouse. They're one tuff bird to
hunt. Unfortunately their numbers have really declined here in
North East Ohio. Its rare now to see one here.

Any explanation as to why the decline?

If anyone knows for sure they aren't talking. Been some
spectulation about a huge increase in our Turkey flock possibly
affecting the grouse nesting areas and also the increase in
Yotes as well. I know that grouse populations fluctuate on a ten
year cycle and I've been hunting them for over 45 years and have
never seen the numbers get this low. It started about the time
the wild turkeys were re-introduced, over the last 10 years the
population has exploded here in N.E. Ohio.I don't know if that
is what caused our problem or not. Just hope someone can figure
it out and start getting the Grouse back in huntable numbers. I
used to average 20 grouse a year but I stopped hunting them 10
years ago due to lack of numbers. I now see mabe one or two per
year and don't find many tracks in the snow. Guess all we can do
       is hope.

That's a shame the Grouse are in decline. Those daggone turkeys
are a pest. Maybe they will make a comeback. Thanks for the
       reply.

I would think the Coyotes are doing them harm.

I'd imagine the yotes are part of the problem as well. Their
       numbers are way up too.

I voted for the coyote but never thought of them as "SMALL"
game. Same as gophers . I don't know what I would list them as
       other that "Targets"
