       Favorite Varmint Caliber

Since the new member didn't get to vote before the last poll
closed, I thought we would run one on favorite varmint calibers.

I like em all, but if I am having a bad day I will break out the

The 7 mag will get the job done....with little evidence left. ;D

       I took a groudhog with a 300gr dangeris game solid from a
.375H&H mag once because of a matter of circumstances, it didn't
go vary far after it was hit, just as far as the impact threw it
and it stopped moving. But truth be told, 90% of the varmint
and predator hunting I do is with the .223Rem. I have a .22-250
but I only use it now and then. I also love my .17HMR.

I love my .22-250 and .17HMR both. I use the .17 mostly for
crow and occasional chuck. For anything else it the .22-250.
I'm curious as to what draws you to the .223 more that the
.22-250? Cheap ammo...terrain...or simply like the way it
       shoots?

I live in Maine. Most shots here are under 50 yards, so the
.22-250 is way overkill and a waist of $$ for the rounds. When
I go out west I take both the .223 and the 22-250, I set both up
take a few long shots with the .22-250 than let it cool while I
take the shorter shots with me .223. I use my 17HMR for a lot
of things but I just proffer the center fire. I also like the
added safety factor of the .223 over the .17 when dealing with
       predators.

Realistically though, I like my MKII 22lr. <.50" group at 70
yrds with 40's. I have dropped everything I have shot with this
gun. May give it a Boyd's for a christmas present.

That is some great groups for a 22lr at that distance. Pretty
       impressive indeed.

That would be its best group, it's average runs about 1". It is
a Savage with a fluted barrel and accutrigger. It will gamefully
shoot shot for shot with my 17hm at 50yrs.

       I use a savage-stevens .223
  HTML http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e248/jonthepain/yotegun.jpg
my hunting partner puppypopper accurized it for me - glass
bedding, claying, trigger work, paint, etc.
       shoots moa
i love it - but other than several 12 gauges, it's my only
varmint gun. so i guess it makes it hard for me to compare it
to other rounds, since i've only shot the other calibers
       occasionally.
