       Bipod or shooting stix?
By: Chuckshooter Date: May 31, 2012, 3:50 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
When we went groundhog hunting this past weekend, we used both.
I had a Harris Bipod on my rifle and my buddy had a collapsible
Primos shooting stick. When we spottted a chuck, we would both
set up quick. But we had to sit down to make the shot.
Sometimes we had to stand and shoot free hand. This was
difficult to do and keep the crosshairs from doing the figure
eight. Especially at long distance shots. I recently went to
Dicks Sporting goods and found a shooting stick for $19.99. It
collapses to around 16-18" and extends to approx 5'. I thought
this would be perfect to slide in the backpack and take out for
a gun rest when the standing shots are a must. the Primos
shooting stick only extended about waist high max. So my friend
had to kneel down to rest or collapse it when he sat down to
shoot. My Bipod can still remain on the gun for those sitting
shots, but I might get the longer stick for my standing shots.

I definitely love to use shooting sticks. I have made several
set of sticks over the years that range in length from 24 inches
to 60 inches. My favorite stick is 48 inches. Perfect from the
       sitting position.

I've never used sticks..but I could see the benefit of being 1-2
ft higher up to get a clean shot.

I have an old camera tripod that I fitted with a yoke to hold my
rifle. It really works well, I can adjust the height about 6
inches using the screw adjustment, almost like shooting off a
       bench.

That's one way to make a shooting rest.

I use both, depends on the terrain.

I can see how the terrain could play a role in what one
chooses....the sticks or bipod. Do you make your shooting
       sticks?

Ufortunately I chose the path of least resistance and picked up
a shooting stick some years ago. If time permits later on I will
       go homemade>>
