Raccoon=Small game ,Varmint, or predator ?

I flipped a three sided coin and ended up here.
       That said here it is.
What the heck is a "Denning Tree"
I read an article on calling raccoons in the day. It sounded
like something I want to try.
Raccoons are relatively new here like n the last 20 or 30 years,
now there all over. We see there tracks along the rivers and out
in the AG lands. We have trapped them with "Cuff" traps and
marshmallows as bait, but there 100% nocturnal. The coons do
hibernate up here so winter shooting is all but out. End of
September and the first few week in November is all we would
have when there in prime, that when we trap them after that we
NEVER see any sigh of them. I want to try it like now so we can
have a plan when they get worth some bucks. The article said old
homestead and fallen in barns are good too as long as there not
to far underground to hear the call. But I don't have a clue
what I need to look for. We can spot light them but on one of
out rivers at night may be the last thing you would ever do.
There is NO help along the way and it's a LONG way between
access points and the water is NEVER worm. I never thought after
50+ year of hunting and I'm a NEWBIE, Wat Up Wit Dat? What
should I be looking for, remember no snow and most likely rock
       hard dirt around the trees.

       Second hand knowledge below
A denning tree is simply their home. Dead tree with a hole in
it. any place that they can live in a tree. During the day, set
up behind the hole, 20-50 yard depending on your choice of gun,
use the correct call, and watch them come down the tree. Set up
behind so that they don't see you when they first pop out before
       they commit.

Keep on tryin, find the right tree and it'll put a smile on your
face :D . An active den tree will show a lot of scratches on the
bark and usually hair strands. Coon are like almost any other
animal, always looking for an easy meal and will respond to an
       animal distress call.

Tried again in a different spot, No coons again but it was
poring rain we did get a coyote to come in and get blasted. Rain
messed up the camera so no pics of a very muddy dog...
