When I got out of the Navy in 74 duck hunting in Ohio was
fantastic. Picked up a pair of chest waders, an old ski pole to
use as a wading staff, some shells and I hit the beaver marshes.
I did ok the first year, managed to meet a couple guys that had
webbing between their toes and we put birds on the water belly
up. The second year one of my friends owned 79 acres that the
beaver had dammed up flooding the whole place, a real little
slice of Heaven for us. We killed countless ducks there over the
years, Mallards, Pintails, Woodies, Widgeon, Teal with a few
Black ducks thrown in. Those were the days. I hunted with those
guys for years with each season brought to a close with a big
Wild duck dinner. We would do them up on a grill and served them
up medium rare on a bed of wild rice with wine sauce and plenty
of ice cold beer. Sure miss those days. Many of the guys I
hunted with are no longer with us and over the years the duck
populations have declined. We don't get together to hunt them
anymore, getting a little long in the tooth to be wading the
swamps like we used to. I still have all my gear and have been
thinking that if I can find a new marsh that mabe, just mabe I
can get a couple of the guys together for one last fling.
