testing some 22/250 reloads

We did some hunting yesterday. In the
morning we called coyotes, and did quite well. The wind was
every which direction so about when we had a dog in our sights
the wind would switch and off they would be, no dead coyotes
this trip, but we called in two or three dogs at each stand and
got 4 sets in before the hurricane winds started. We then went
to out "Gravel" pit prairie dog town. I had my 22/250 and my boy
had his new T/C contender with a 7X ? waters barrel and a 2.5
scope. With the wind SO bad our kill % was very bad but we did
get around 25 ish. The boy even got a few , going to be a cool
gun. We used 50 shells each...
Today I ran out to test some 22/250 loads. I have been using
Varget with Match king 52 gr bullets they average 3242 fps, they
just have not been KILLING the coyotes. We think there going to
slow and not opening up when needed. I tested "Rl15, H4895, and
IMR 8208XBR with the 52 gr MK. The 8208 was the fastest with
3660 average high 34.5 gr, also tested 33 gr, 33.5, and 34.0.
Groups all under an inch with the fastest the best. The H4895
was next fastest, 33.5, 34.0, and 34.5. Fastest was 3583 but all
the groups where slightly over an inch with the MK bullets. Rl15
was next in speed 34.5, 35,35.5, and the high fast was 3542 fps.
The groups where all very near the 1/2 " mark put the low end
was the vey best at the one hole type. but I found that with the
Varget too. Looking for some speed. I did some Varget and Burger
52 gr bullets too . 34.5, 35.0, 35.5 gr the fastest was 3576
average the low was 3455 fps. All three groups of 3 shots where
at 1/2 inch. SO, It looks like with MK bullets I need 8208 34.5
gr and 3660 fps. But, if I change bullets the 52 gr Burger the
Varget going 3576 probable will be the ticket.[font=comic
sans ms] 39 shots at paper suck I wish we had gone gopher
shooting in stead...

Sounds like overall you had a great day out. Called a few
dogs...killed 25 prairie dogs and did some load tests also. I
use H4895...love it. Shoot great in my 22-250. My gun loves 36
grains of H4895 topped with 50 gr. PSP's and 53 gr. ballistic
tips. Both shoot equally well and are a slobber knocker on the
dogs and hogs. ;D Currently using some H335 behind some Sierra
40 gr. hollow points in my .223. It seems promising on
paper....yet to get a shot at a dog or hog though. Time will
tell.... :)
